Mini Stocks Added To Friday Ocala Schedule

By BJ Cavin- Ocala Speedway Media

OCALA, FL- After days of torrential rain left Ocala Speedway a muddy mess and washed out the first night of points racing in 2011, it will be try, try again this Friday, April 8th.  Included on the schedule will be the Late Models, the Hobby Stocks, The Amsoil Thunder Stocks, the Mini Stocks, and the Gladiators.  This will be the last Friday of regular racing before the Monster Trucks invade Ocala Speedway the following week.

Thanks to the interference of Mother Nature, Ocala Speedway’s Late Models have seen virtually no action this season except for a few determined racers that participated in some special events.  Of those drivers, Christian Augspurger is the only regular Ocala weekly Late Model racer who has been racing at the track, as Tyler Ivey and Ivedent Lloyd do not compete in the regular season points race on a weekly basis.  But defending Late Model Champion Mark Whitener got in some fast practice laps over a month ago, and he will be the odds on favorite to win come Friday night. Ocala Speedway Succumbs to Heavy Rains

by BJ Cavin- Ocala Speedway Media

OCALA, FL-  While racers and fans might think that a rainout on a beautiful weather night is some sort of April Fools joke, the unfortunate truth is that the Friday, April 1st program at Ocala Speedway was washed out by torrential rains that fell through much of the week, resulting in a muddy track that could not be dried out in time for racing.  So on a day where the sun shined brightly and temperatures were in the 70’s, things will be dark and quiet at Florida’s oldest speedway tonight. Some estimates show that up to 5 inches of rain fell on Ocala Speedway over Wednesday and Thursday, which led to the Friday cancellation.

While this week’s races fell victim to the wet conditions, the Mini Stocks will get a reprieve and will be added to the schedule for Friday, April 8th.  In addition to the Mini Stocks, fans will see action from the Late Models, Hobby Stocks, Amsoil V8 Thunder Stocks, and the Gladiators.  Other than the Mini Stocks being added to the schedule for next week, there are no plans to make up any of the other canceled races.

And April 8th will be the final night of regular racing at Ocala Speedway before the Monster Jam Summer Tour returns with the top monster trucks in the nation live, up close, and in person, performing on the infield at America’s Dirt Track.  For ticket information, or to see the complete racing schedule, please visit us online at www.OcalaSpeedway.com.

Florida Mini Sprints Return to Ocala Speedway

by BJ Cavin- Ocala Speedway Media

OCALA, FL-  Florida’s oldest speedway is back in action this coming Friday night with a full slate of races scheduled.  Headlining the evening will be the very popular and competitive Florida Mini Sprint Association, making a regular season appearance at Ocala Speedway after an earlier visit during February as part of the Winternationals events.  Fans will also see action from Ocala’s own Open Wheel Modifieds, the Amsoil Thunder Stocks, the Mini Stocks, and the Gladiators.

The Florida Mini Sprints are one of the most competitive and exciting traveling racing series in the state, and each of their visits to Ocala Speedway has produced top quality competition.  These little winged sprint cars are capable of speeds around 130 mph, and they scream around Ocala Speedway’s tight turn 4 with reckless abandon.  The pure excitement that they generate is the reason that the FMSA is the only Florida based racing series that is invited to compete alongside the O’Reilly All Stars Sprint car series during Ocala’s Winternationals, and a major reason why Ocala Speedway race fans enjoy seeing them on the schedule on a regular basis.

As the regular points season opens for Ocala’s Modifieds, the racer with the most wins on the southeast’s toughest 3/8ths mile in 2011 is Kyle Bronson.  Bronson picked up a win with the UMP Mods during Ocala’s Winternationals, and he returned to Victory Lane on March 11th.  Meanwhile Jeff Mathews has one win this year which he scored during Winternationals as well.  Matthews is the defending division champion, and has dominated the division since Ocala’s asphalt was covered with clay.  So now the question is whether Bronson can keep the pattern going and manage to unseat Mathews at the top of the heap, and Friday’s race might be the first step in that direction.

Speaking of domination, Ray Wheeler has won every Amsoil V8 Thunder Stock race so far with just one exception, and has his streak of consecutive victories up to three going into Friday’s race.  If anyone is primed to stop Wheeler, it would have to be Jason Gamble, who was the victor in the only race that Wheeler failed to win, and who raced Wheeler with everything that he had last Friday night, only to be forced to settle for second place. The way Wheeler and Gamble are racing, they could be the rivalry to watch this season at Ocala Speedway.

In 2010 the Mini Stocks at Ocala Speedway became the last remaining Mini Stock division running on dirt in the state.  This year two more tracks have added the division, and both are running rules packages that are in line with those at Ocala.  The hope for fans and racers is that this creates more support and gets some cars down from the jackstands that have held them for over a year, and this Friday may be a good indication as to whether that is happening or not.  Tim Zackery won the initial race of the season at Ocala with young Ryan Babcock finishing second, and this week brings the return of Ryans’ father, Sean, to the division.  Cody Kinsey will also be back and looking to improve on his third place finish from earlier this month.

Casey Feaster was in the running to win the Gladiator Division Championship in 2010 when a mechanical issue with his tow vehicle caused him to miss a race, thus derailing his hopes at the worst possible time.  But that is in the past, and so far in 2011 Feaster has been the only winner in the division with two victories under his belt.  However, those races were non points events, and did not count toward the championship, so this Friday is Feaster’s first chance this year to take the lead and make amends for last season’s slip.  The only racer who has shown real signs of being able to outpace Feaster is Sammy Dale, but Dale’s runs have been cut short by mechanical woes so far.  And never rule out Kyle Morse, who has figured out how to run up front and complicate matters for old guard of the division.

Ocala Speedway will open the grandstand gate at 5PM this Friday with heat races slated to begin at 8PM.  For more information, visit America’s Dirt Track online at www.OcalaSpeedway.com, or call the track at 352-622-9400.

Lanigan Repeats At Ocala Speedway

by BJ Cavin-Ocala Speedway Media

OCALA, FL-  A banner crowd of excited races fans flooded the grandstands and pit area of Ocala Speedway on Friday night as the World of Outlaws Late Models made their final appearance in Florida for the 2011 season.  And that crowd took full advantage of the new “all access pass” that allowed all grandstand ticket holders full access to the pit area, as they spent much of their time getting an up close look at the racers, the machines, and the crews, as they worked to prep for the various races.  They also got a close look at the Amsoil V8 Thunder Stocks, Ocala’s hard nosed pure stock division, as they banged out the dents then proceeded to the track and created more.

With $10,000 going to the winner of the World of Outlaws Sunshine 50 feature race, the drivers wasted no time in hooking up on an all but perfectly prepared track and set an amazing six track records during qualifying.  The fastest of those times, and therefore the new standing track record, goes to Austin Hubbard as he posted a blistering 14.873 lap around the oddly shaped track.

By the time that the three heat races and the B-main had been completed, the track had taken quite a bit of rubber and had changed dramatically from what it was in earlier qualifying.  That had teams scrambling to adapt, but dramatic changes over the course of an evening are part of why Ocala is known as the southeast’s toughest 3/8ths mile, and teams had to deal with the conditions at hand.  And when the green flew to begin the Sunshine 50, those who had failed to adapt quickly found themselves in trouble.  But young sensation Christian Augspurger found himself driving a race car that didn’t want to handle no matter what the conditions were, and that left him as a fan in the stands for the feature event this time, after finishing 22nd last year’s event.

Jonathan Davenport had been impressive earlier in the night, and he wasted zero time jumping into the lead and dominating the early laps of the race.  But just behind him was last year’s winner, Darrell Lanigan, and Lanigan was coming in Davenport’s direction.  Meanwhile Austin Hubbard, who had blistered the track in qualifying, found himself in reverse and losing positions as the race progressed.

Lanigan muscled his way around Josh Richards and began working on Davenport by lap 13, and on lap 17 he slipped inside of Davenport to steal the lead.  A caution just after the pass bunched up the field again, and Lanigan took full advantage by using clear track ahead to open up his lead when the green flew again. But within 9 more laps the leaders were once more lapping the cars at the tail of the field, and as Lanigan picked his way through the traffic that lead was whittled down just a bit.

Ocala’s Ivedent Lloyd Jr. had wound up in a dismal starting position on the 9th row in 18th place, but had patiently worked his way up to 12th by lap 10.  And the 21 car was still pecking away at the cars in front of him as the laps ran down, eventually finishing in 8th place on the night.  Meanwhile Tyler Ivey had started strong in a better position than Lloyd, but struggled in traffic and succumbed to worn out tires late in the race, dropping out in the waning laps and watching from the infield.

Darrell Lanigan proved to be too much for anyone to handle on the night and drove to his second World of Outlaws Late Model win in as many years at Florida’s oldest speedway.  Josh Richards fought hard to hang onto second place, while Jonathan Davenport claimed the third spot.  Jason Feger and Chub Frank rounded out the top five finishers.

When Ocala’s Amsoil V8 Thunder Stocks hit the track the fans know that chances are that they will hit each other as well, and that process began early in heat racing on Friday night.  One particularly violent incident involved Jon Layerd and Tim Matthieu, who hooked up in turn 4 and together plowed into the outside wall head on.  That incident destroyed both race cars and heavily damaged both the wall and the guardrail, but after a stoppage for some patchwork repairs the heat race was able to continue.  And thankfully both racers walked away from the extremely hard hit.

Another red flag resulted from Justin Tillander’s frontstretch tangle with the concrete wall that rolled his car onto its roof.  That incident happened just short of the flagstand directly in front of the majority of the crowd and quickly brought all of them to their feet.  Tillander walked away as the track crew righted the car, and after a slight delay to patch up the hole dug into the clay by Tillander’s car, the racing resumed.

As for the 20 lap, $500 to win feature event, the race was dominated by Ray Wheeler, who fought off a hard charging Jason Gamble to grab his third consecutive Amsoil V8 Thunder Stock victory at Ocala Speedway.  Nevertheless, Gamble refused to allow Wheeler to win with ease, and even got himself side by side with the red 27 machine more than once, yet could not quite seal the deal with a pass.  So Gamble would settle for second while Chris Fontaine took a weekend off from Camping world Truck Series racing to place third at Ocala.  Jonathan Appleby was impressive behind the wheel of the 55W as he placed fourth, and Scooter Bare was the fifth place finisher.

Ocala Speedway is back in action next Friday night as the action packed Florida Mini Sprint Association comes to visit.  The Modifieds will headline the regular divisions and will be joined by the Amsoil Thunder Stocks, the Mini Stocks, and the Gladiators.  The gates will open at 5PM with racing at 8PM, and for more information fans can go to www.OcalaSpeedway.com.

Lanigan Outruns Richards For Victory In Friday’s Sunshine 50 At Ocala Speedway

Kentucky Star Remains Undefeated In Two Career World of Outlaws Late Model Series Starts At Florida Track

By Kevin Kovac, WoO LMS P.R. Director

OCALA, FL – March 25, 2011 – Darrell Lanigan has really taken a liking to Ocala Speedway.

The 40-year-old star from Union, Ky., emerged victorious for the second time in as many career starts at the egg-shaped track, capturing Friday night’s World of Outlaws Late Model Series ‘Sunshine 50.’

“Our car runs pretty good here,” said the modest Lanigan, who won the national tour’s inaugural event at Ocala almost exactly one year ago. “We definitely like coming to this place.”

Continuing his torrid comeback in the wake of missing last month’s WoO LMS season opener at Volusia Speedway Park due to a medical issue, Lanigan scored his second A-Main triumph in a row to join Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, Tenn., as the tour’s only victors in four 2011 events. He pocketed $10,675 just six days after earning over $20,000 for winning the ‘Cash Cow 100’ at Columbus (Miss.) Speedway.

Lanigan, who started fifth, steered his self-owned Rocket car into third place by the second lap. The 2008 WoO LMS champion drove underneath Josh Richards of Shinnston, W.Va., for second on lap 13 and made the same move to overtake race-long pacesetter Jonathan Davenport of Blairsville, Ga., for the lead on lap 18.

The remainder of the distance belonged to Lanigan, who kept Richards at arm’s length and survived a lap-49 caution flag that necessitated a green-white-checkered conclusion.

Richards, who started third, settled for a season-best finish of second in his Rocket mount. He nearly passed Davenport for the lead on lap 12 but skirted high in turns one and two the following circuit, losing the runner-up spot to Lanigan.

Davenport, who started from the pole position, relinquished second to Richards on a lap-18 restart but held on to place third in the Barry Wright house car. Reigning DIRTcar Summer Nationals champion Jason Feger of Bloomington, Ill., ran among the top five for the entire distance and finished fourth in his Bob Pierce-built machine, and WoO LMS veteran Chub Frank of Bear Lake, Pa., was fifth for his first top-five run of 2011 in his Rocket car.

“The track was a little one-lane tonight, but it was still racy at the beginning and you had to get there (to the front) – and we had the best car to get there,” said Lanigan, who recorded his 21st career win on the WoO LMS since 2004. “I knew I didn’t have too long to get to the front. We got to third quick, and then those two guys (Richards and Lanigan) slipped up a little and we were able to get by ’em.”

Lanigan maintained a half- to full-second edge over Richards throughout the green-flag run stretching from lap 18 to 49. He had just taken the white flag when the race’s third and final caution flag flew after Billy Moyer of Batesville, Ark., spun out of eighth place in a chain-reaction scramble caused by the slowing car of Seaford, Del.’s Austin Hubbard, who was struck by a flat right-rear tire while holding fifth place.

Richards, 23, was unable to offer a challenge on the ensuing two-lap sprint to the finish. He acknowledged that he had effectively allowed his opportunity to reach Victory Lane for the first time in 2011 slip through his fingers when his bid to unseat Davenport fell short early in the distance.

“When I was up beside of Davenport (on lap 12) he did what he had to do – he got wide and tried to run me out a little,” said Richards, who has won the last two WoO LMS championships. “When we slipped up (in turns one and two), Darrell got by. That was our shot right there. I knew from then on that there wouldn’t be much passing and Darrell was good, so it would be tough to get back by him.

“I took a chance. I probably should’ve waited because Davenport was softer on tires, but you never know. I knew the bottom was getting rubbered up and I knew we had tire at the beginning, so I figured if we were gonna make a move I probably should try it. It didn’t work out this time, but we still had a good car and it was a good night for us.”

Richards vaulted from fifth to second in the WoO LMS points standings with his performance, closing within two points of Moyer, who remained the leader despite tumbling to 20th in the finish. Lanigan, meanwhile, cracked the top 10 for the first time this season, reaching ninth place, 56 points in arrears of Moyer.

Both of the A-Main’s early cautions involved Chip Brindle of Chatsworth, Ga., a crate Late Model standout making his first-ever WoO LMS start. He spun in turn four on lap five as part of a tangle that included Jill George of Cedar Falls, Iowa, who ran a backup car after a B-Main accident forced her to use a provisional to start the headliner, and 2011 Rookie of the Year contender Brian Reese of Sharpsburg, Ga., and the upstart spun again on the backstretch on lap 18.

Rick Eckert of York, Pa., finished sixth and Shane Clanton of Fayetteville, Ga., placed seventh despite racing the final two laps with a virtually flat right-rear tire. Ivedent Lloyd Jr. of Ocala, Fla., made his home track fans proud by advancing from the 17th starting spot to finish eighth – and earn the $500 ‘Bonus Bucks’ cash for being the highest-placing driver who hasn’t won a WoO LMS A-Main and isn’t ranked among the top 12 in the points standings – while Steve Francis of Ashland, Ky., and Tim McCreadie, whose night went downhill after he fell from second to fifth with two laps remaining in his heat race because he clipped the inside tractor tire in turn two, rounded out the top 10.

Hubbard established a new track record in Ohlins Shocks Time Trials, blazing around the track in 14.873 seconds for his first quick-time honor of 2011. He was one of six drivers in the 28-car field to surpass the former one-lap standard of 15.041 seconds set by Richards on Feb. 13, 2011.

Heat winners were Hubbard, Lanigan and Davenport, and Brent Robinson of Smithfield, Va., topped the B-Main.

The WoO LMS continues its Southeastern tripleheader on Saturday night (March 26) at Screven Motor Speedway in Sylvania, Ga., and Sunday night (March 27) at Needmore Speedway in Norman Park, Ga.

World of Outlaws Late Model Series Stars Prepare For Challenge Of Uniquely-Shaped Ocala Speedway This Friday Night (March 25)

From Kevin Kovac, World of Outlaws Late Model Series PR Director

OCALA, FL – March 22, 2011 – World of Outlaws Late Model Series stars have seen it all during their travels around the country.

But the celebrated road warriors’ vast experience doesn’t make their job any easier when they visit the uniquely-contoured Ocala Speedway, which hosts the national tour for the second straight spring this Friday night (March 25).

A three-eighths-mile track that’s laid out more like an egg than an oval, Ocala will present one of the stiffest tests of the 2011 season to drivers chasing the $10,000 top prize in Friday evening’s ‘Sunshine 50.’

“There’s no other track shaped like Ocala that I’ve raced on,” said two-time defending WoO LMS champion Josh Richards of Shinnston, W.Va., who finished fourth in last year’s inaugural tour event at the oldest motorsports facility in Florida. “It’s a weird place. Both ends are totally different, which definitely makes it challenging for a racer.”

And great for the fans, who came out in record numbers for last year’s WoO LMS show to watch the nation’s best full-fender competitors attempt to tame the speedway.

“That’s Ocala,” said owner Mike Peters, who purchased the then-paved facility in late 2005 and ran it as an asphalt track for two seasons before returning the speedway to its dirt-surface roots in 2008. “Because of the shape, the racing is always real exciting. It’s really easy for drivers to make a mistake and get passed by the guy behind them before they can recover.”

Yes, getting around Ocala Speedway can be a tricky proposition. Consider a description of the track by Rick Eckert of York, Pa., one of two drivers who have started all 284 WoO LMS A-Mains contested since 2004.

“It’s really D-shaped,” said Eckert, who finished 13th in last year’s WoO LMS A-Main at Ocala. “I’ve been to D-shaped racetracks, but that’s the most D-shaped track I’ve ever seen. I tested one time a few years ago at New Egypt (N.J.), and that’s as close as I’ve come to seeing a track like Ocala.

“It has two different ends – two drastically different ends. You got corner one, and then corner two basically goes all the way to (turn) four. There’s really no third turn because it’s so rounded down the backstraightaway. It’s a difficult place, because there’s not a lot of room down the backstraightaway and that’s most of the track. The one time you straighten up is when you go down that front straightaway.”

How does a driver devise a car setup for Ocala? According to Eckert, that’s a mystery.

“I think you have to pick an end,” said Eckert. “You have to get your car good at one end and just man up at the other end. Now last year Darrell (Lanigan) was good on both ends, so it’s possible. If you get your car good, you can survive on both ends.”

Union, Ky’s Lanigan, the 2008 WoO LMS champion, won last year’s 50-lapper at Ocala, fighting off challenges from eventual runner-up Tim McCreadie of Watertown, N.Y., and third-place finisher Austin Hubbard of Seaford, Del., in a tense, crowd-pleasing race. But when asked how he was able to hit on a setup that worked at both ends of the track, he could only respond with a joke.

“We got a switch we flip halfway down the straightaway,” laughed Lanigan, who enters this weekend’s action coming off a convincing $20,000-plus victory from the 19th starting in last Saturday night’s ‘Cash Cow 100’ at Columbus (Miss.) Speedway. “Nah…really, you basically have to be good in one corner and manage the other one. It’s pretty different, real challenging.”

Adding to Ocala’s degree of difficulty for the barnstorming Outlaws is the track surface, a uniquely light-colored, tacky clay that can confound the most savvy dirt veterans the first time they lay eyes on it.

“The surface is different itself, I guess because of that Florida dirt,” said Richards, who comes into Ocala’s event tied with 2007 champion Steve Francis of Ashland, Ky., as the winningest driver on the WoO LMS since 2004, with 28 victories. “I think one thing that keeps the moisture in the track and keeps it fast is that the surface isn’t really deep. I think it’s only like 18 inches deep in some places on top of that pavement, so the water stays in there and the moisture keeps coming back up there all night long. You might think it’s gonna dry out, but that moisture just keeps coming back up and keeps the track real fast.

“I think that’s why you see good racing there all the time,” added the sensational 23-year-old. “It’s a really fast place, and the last (special Late Model) race there (a DIRTcar UMP-sanctioned event on Feb. 13 that saw Hubbard and Richards run one-two until both popped tires with four laps remaining) definitely showed you can put on great races there even if it’s a little rough.”

“The surface is 80 percent clay,” said Peters, a former airline pilot who oversees track prep at Ocala. “It’s very responsive to water, so it doesn’t need as much water put down on it as other tracks in Florida do. This is our fourth year working with it and we’ve gotten a good handle on it.”

Peters anticipates that he’ll be able to whip up a typically racy track for the ‘Sunshine 50,’ an event he is awaiting with baited breath.

“I’m thrilled about having the World of Outlaws back again,” said Peters, who attended high school in Ocala with current WoO LMS director Tim Christman. “To me, it’s an honor to have the best Late Model racers in the country come to Ocala.

“The speed of the Late Models, the skill level of the drivers – it’s just amazing. There was a battle for the lead the whole race last year and I would expect the same thing again.”

Richards, Lanigan, Eckert, McCreadie, Hubbard and Francis are among the World of Outlaws regulars headed for Ocala. The roster of travelers will also include Shane Clanton of Fayetteville, Ga., Clint Smith of Senoia, Ga., Chub Frank of Bear Lake, Pa., Tim Fuller of Watertown, N.Y., Vic Coffey of Caledonia, N.Y., Jill George of Cedar Falls, Iowa, and 2011 Rookie of the Year contenders Ron Davies of Warren, Pa., Pat Doar of New Richmond, Wis., John Lobb of Frewsburg, N.Y., and Brian Reese of Sharpsburg, Ga.

Other drivers with the event on their schedules are 2010 DIRTcar Summer Nationals champion Jason Feger of Bloomington, Ill., Tony Knowles of Tyrone, Ga., and Florida standouts Ivedent Lloyd Jr. of Ocala, who set fast time and led the first two laps of last year’s WoO LMS event at his hometrack, Tyler Ivey of Tallahassee, Mark Whitener of Middleburg and Christian Auspurger of Palm Beach Gardens.

In addition, Billy Moyer of Batesville, Ark., who leads the WoO LMS points standings after three events but is not planning to follow the entire schedule, said he is considering entering Ocala’s ‘Sunshine 50’ as well as this weekend’s subsequent tour stops at Screven Motor Speedway in Sylvania, Ga., on Saturday night (March 26) and Needmore Speedway in Norman Park, Ga., on Sunday evening (March 27).

Ocala’s pit gates are scheduled to open at 3 p.m. and the grandstands will be unlocked at 5 p.m. on Fri., March 25. Practice is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. and racing is set to start at 8 p.m.

General admission tickets to the WoO LMS program, which will also include action for the track’s Amsoil Thunder Stocks division, will be $30 (adults), $15 (ages 6-15) and free for kids under 6. All tickets for this year’s event are actually ‘all-access’ passes, allowing entrance to the pit area as well so fans can get a close-up look at the WoO LMS cars and meet the invading stars.

World of Outlaws Late Models Return To Ocala This Friday

By BJ Cavin- Ocala Speedway Media

OCALA, FL-  One of the most anticipated annual events at the historic Ocala Speedway will take place this Friday night, as the World of Outlaws Late Model Series will return to the southeast’s toughest 3/8ths mile to challenge the track and a host of local and regional racers as well.  Along with some of the best dirt late model racers in the nation, Ocala Speedway’s own Amsoil V8 Thunder Stocks will be turned loose for what should be another rough and tough 20 lap feature event, with $500 going to the winner.

Last year’s World of Outlaws Late Model event at America’s Dirt Track was a rousing success that saw Darrell Lanigan celebrate in Victory Lane.  Tim McCreadie was a close second, with Austin Hubbard placing third.  Lanigan, and the rest of the Outlaws, will be back in force this time, and so will Ocala’s Ivedent Lloyd, Tyler Ivey, Christian Augspurger, and more.  Those three, plus Dillon Wood, Justin Tilton, and Shane Williams, were the regional racers who made the World of Outlaws feature in 2010 and took on the pros.

Adult admission to this year’s event will be $30, which is an “all access” pass to both the grandstand and to the pit area as well.  This will create a unique opportunity to see the World of Outlaws Late Model racers up close and personal, plus allow for autographs, personal photos, and more interaction with the teams.  And at $30 the admission for this event at Ocala is on the very low end of ticket prices for World of Outlaws events, even without the “all access” bonus.  This will be the final visit to Florida for the World of Outlaws Late Models in 2011.

As Ocala Speedway race fans know, any event that involves the Amsoil Thunder Stocks is going to provide plenty of side by side, fender banging action.  This Friday’s race will be no different as a full field of Thunder Stocks are expected to mix it up and settle a few scores left open after last Friday’s mayhem under a full moon.  And adding fuel to the fire is another inflated first place purse, this time worth $500 to the winner of the 20 lap event.

Ocala Speedway will open the grandstand gates at 5PM on Friday afternoon, and fans will have immediate access to the pit area beginning at that time.  All seating in the grandstands and in the turns one and four area bleachers is first come and first served, so fans are urged to arrive early for the best seats.  Qualifying for the World of Outlaws Late Models will be at 7PM, with heat races scheduled for 8PM.  For more information or directions to America’s Dirt Track, please visit www.OcalaSpeedway.com, or call the track at 352-622-9400.

Three Racers Collect $1000 At Ocala

By BJ Cavin- Ocala Speedway Media

OCALA, FL-  Racers and fans turned out in droves on Friday night for the “Miller Lite Night of Thousands” at the historic Ocala Speedway.  The event paid $1000 each to the winners of three racing divisions, including Ocala’s Hobby Stocks, the Amsoil Thunder Stocks, and visiting Sportsman racers from across the state of Florida, plus featured another competitive show from the Gladiator Division.  Everyone was greeted by beautiful weather and a well prepared racing surface, but under an ominous full moon things did not go according to plan for many.

Ocala’s Hobby Stocks got first crack at the $1000 cash carrot, and from the start it looked like no one was going to get it as multiple spins and collisions resulted in three separate restarts of the race. And if any driver had been counting on a long green flag run in order to gain momentum, it simply was NOT going to happen.  Tim Gay grabbed the lead and held it through several restarts after this and that, but Mike Tovet was all over Gay along with a determined Joe Belkey.  Also in the mix was Kevin Durden and Donnie Reed, but Reed would become entangled in a later scrape on the track and be relegated to a night of playing catch up from the rear.

As the caution laps added up the officials were forced to shorten the race to 12 laps due to time restrictions, and that resulted in an all out scramble for the win with Tim Gay crossing the line first.  But a trip through the tech shed a few minutes later handed the win to Joe Belkey, with Mike Tovet coming in second.  Kevin Durden was third, Howard O’Steen was fourth, and Matt Shea got his second top five in two weeks.

The Gladiators ran the second feature of the night with Kyle Morse starting from the pole, but Morse would stumble early with a backstretch spin which gave Sammy Dale the lead.  Meanwhile Becca Paugh ran strong in the top three for a few laps until she was overtaken by Ken McLeod and Casey Feaster.  And Feaster was not finished, as he began an all out, multi lap battle with Dale that had the crowd on its feet.

As Dale and Feaster battled it out, the 30 machine crept up from the rear of the pack to slip into the top five, and Kyle Morse made up for his earlier mistake by doing the same.  Going into the final lap as the Feaster and Dale tussle was getting more heated, Sammy Dale’s right front tire deflated causing him to all but slam the wall in turn four.  That incident handed Casey Feaster the win while Kyle Morse rebounded to second place and the 30 car finished in third place.  Sammy Dale valiantly limped through the final circuit to salvage fourth place while Dave Ladrie used the steady and cautious approach to claim fifth place.

It took four heats and a wild B Main to set the 24 car field for the Amsoil Thunder Stock $1000 to win feature race, and full moon or not, the Thunder Stocks are always going to get physical, especially when there is a cash carrot dangling in front of them.  And true to form they took multiple restarts to get the first lap into the books and then continued the carnage throughout the 20 lap race, where it became as much a matter of surviving to the finish as it was to try and finish in first place.

Scott Mooers held the early lead but succumbed to a broken transmission later on that left him dumping fluid in the infield.  That handed the lead to Eddie Lake, who then had to contend with Dave Kinsey, Luke Sadler, and Ray Wheeler. Wheeler turned out to be Lake’s biggest problem, and on lap 14 Wheeler wrestled the lead away from the blue 96 and held on to collect the win and $1000.  Dave Kinsey motored his way past Lake to grab second place and Luke Sadler did the same for third place despite a tire going down in the process.  Eddie Lake wound up as the fourth place finisher and Jonathan Appleby hung tough throughout the race to finish fifth.

If anyone expected the $1000 to win Sportsman feature to be any different from the first three feature races of the night, then they left highly disappointed.  The contact began early with turn one being the trouble spot, then continued as the cars at the rear of the pack simply could not keep from running into each other.  Daniel Woody held the early lead, then passed it back to John Bradley, who promptly gave it up to a hard charging Mark Whitener, all in the first three laps of the race.  Phillip Cobb was also in the mix, yet never managed to take the lead if not for trying.

Whitener took advantage of clear sailing ahead once the wrecking at the rear eliminated the damaged cars from the field, and drove away to score the win. Dave Kinsey mounted a late charge and closed the gap, yet fell short and settled for second place as Phillip Cobb placed third.  Daniel Woody came home in fourth place, and Nevin Gainey rounded out the top five with David Ponton right behind him in a badly battered car.

On Friday, March 25th Ocala Speedway will welcome the World of Outlaws Late model Series for their final Florida appearance in 2011, plus another rough and tumble feature from the Amsoil Thunder Stocks.  In addition to the field of nationally ranked top dirt late model racers that tour with the World of Outlaws, look for several local favorites to try their hand at running with the some of the best.  Ivedent Lloyd will take the challenge, as will Tyler Ivey and young racing sensation, Christian Augspurger.  The $30 admission for the World of Outlaws will be an “all access” pass, giving every free admittance to the pit area for the night, and for more information be sure to visit www.OcalaSpeedway.com or phone the track at 352-622-9400.

Three Divisions Run For $1000 At Ocala Speedway

By BJ Cavin-Ocala Speedway Media

OCALA, FL-  The historic Ocala Speedway will be back in action this Friday, March 18th, as the first “Miller Lite Night of Thousands” for 2011 will dangle the big money cash carrot in front of the Hobby Stocks, the Amsoil Thunder Stocks, and Sportsman racers from all over the state of Florida.  And not only will the fans see racers amp up the volume for a big payoff, but they will also see Ocala’s Gladiator division return to action as well.

Sportsman racers have had limited opportunities to take on Ocala’s tricky and tough 3/8ths mile, but their next chance comes this Friday with the winner claiming a $1000 payday.  These $1000 to win affairs normally attract a wide range of challengers from many different tracks, so the competition level can be quite high and the action fierce.  This race will be no exception, and many racers may want to use this opportunity for some seat time as they prepare to enter points races at their respective home tracks, while shooting for a extra big payday as well.  For the fans it is a chance to see how racers who normally do not compete head to head will fare against each other, and fans from other tracks will be on hand to cheer on their favorites against competition from across the state.

Mike Tovet normally does his racing at the big half mile across the forest, but last week he made the trek over to Ocala and spoiled the opening night festivities for the locals by winning the first Hobby Stock feature of 2011. Kevin Durden valiantly tried to chase down Tovet but ran out of laps and time and finished second, but the added motivation of $1000 might be just the thing that Durden needs to make sure that doesn’t happen this week. Meanwhile two former Gladiator racers, Matt Shea and Devin Walker, showed that they can wheel a Hobby Stock by finishing fourth and fifth respectively.  They now know that they can compete with the rest of the field, and that they have just as much chance of getting a big payday as anyone else.

The Amsoil Thunder Stocks opened their 2011 season in the same way that they closed 2010, by beating and banging their way around the track and literally fighting for a win.  Throwing in extra money tends to be like throwing gasoline on a fire, and certainly Friday’s $1000 to win feature will mean bent sheet metal and the free exchange of paint, plus some new scars on the track’s walls as well.  Perhaps the Ocala Thunder Stock racers might want to concentrate less on beating each other up and instead focus on outrunning the competition, as outsiders finished well in last weekend’s event.  Ray Wheeler got the win, while Richard Calmes and Wally Douglas both had top five finishes.  The only two Ocala regulars in the top five were Eddie Lake and Jonathan Gillette.

When compared to the roughhousing of the Thunder Stocks, the first Gladiator race of 2011 was a very calm affair, but Sammy Dale served notice that his machine was capable of running in front except for an intermittent engine problem that slowed him in the feature.  The win went to none other than Casey Feaster, who will again be out to get an Ocala championship trophy to display with the one that he collected from across the forest last season.  Feaster had to outrun a determined Kyle Morse and Robert Graham in order to get to Victory Lane, so look for this week’s race to feature even more side-by-side drama and tight competition.

Ocala Speedway will open the grandstand gate at 5PM on Friday evening, with heats set to begin at 8PM.  Fans can get information on admission prices and view the upcoming race schedule at www.OcalaSpeedway.com, Racers or fans with questions are invited to call Ocala Speedway at 352-622-9400.

Five Divisions Open Ocala Points Season

By BJ Cavin- Ocala Speedway Media

OCALA, FL-  After a one week delay caused by stormy weather, Ocala Speedway opened the 2011 points season with five divisions hitting the famed 3/8ths mile clay oval on Friday night.  And despite cold temperatures, fans took in an exciting night of racing, headlined by a 25 lap, $1000 to win Modified Challenge.

The Hobby Stocks opened the night’s events by going from green to checkers without a caution, in what turned out to be a very competitive feature race. Robert Sirmons jumped out to an early lead and looked to be in complete control before Michael Tovet flexed his muscles and stole the lead with a gutsy slide job in turn 4. Kevin Durden also got past Sirmons and began chasing Tovet, but to no avail as Tovet drove away to score the first victory at Ocala Speedway this season.  Kevin Durden settled for second place after lapped traffic slowed his efforts at catching Tovet, and Robert Sirmons wound up in the third spot on the night.  Matt Shea and Devin Walker had moved up from the Gladiator class to the Hobby Stocks for this season, and they placed fourth and fifth, respectively.

Ocala’s Mini Stocks went through a lot of changes in 2010, and the first race of 2011 indicated that even more changes could be in store.  After two heats set the field for the feature race, only four cars were able to answer the call when race time came, and race officials shortened the event to 10 laps. Ryan Babcock led the race from the pole position and fought off every challenge from Tim Zackery except for one.  With the laps winding down Babcock hit a rough spot in turn 3 and briefly lost control, allowing Zackery to take advantage and steal the lead.  Zackery earned the win while a disappointed Ryan Babcock followed in second place.  Third place went to Cody Kinsey while Jamie Tinkham claimed the fourth spot.

The message was loud and clear from the Amsoil Thunder Stocks from the moment that the first heat race took the green flag, that the rough and tough attitude that the division is famous for would continue in 2011 and would possibly get even tougher.  Eddie Lake held the early lead and looked too fast to tame, but Ray Wheeler refused to give in and kept after Lake until he finally took control on lap 15.  Meanwhile Jonathan Gillette, Richard Calmes, and Wally Douglas, all battled for the third spot with each gaining the advantage at times during the race.

The pushing and shoving continued throughout the field for the entire race while Eddie Lake tried his best to regain the lead from Wheeler, but Ray Wheeler proved too strong as he held off Lake for the win.  Richard Calmes followed the front two for third place, and Jonathan Gillette made a late charge to grab the fourth spot.  Wally Douglas rounded out the top five finishers.

Anytime a $1000 cash carrot is dangled in front of the top Modified racers in the region there are bound to be fireworks, and Friday night was no exception.  The race was punctuated by cautions due to solo spins and plenty of car to car contact, but everytime the green flag waved Kyle Bronson would rocket into the lead and then expand it. At the same time that Bronson was dominating the race, Devin Dixon was making his way from the back of the pack into the top five contenders.  Dixon’s night began badly with mechanical issues during heat racing, then he was tangled up in a multi car fracas in turn 2 early in the feature race.  But Dixon never relented, and although Bronson may have been far out in front, Dixon was managing to close the gap.

There was no doubt that Kyle Bronson was in complete control as he collected a convincing win, and Buzzie Reutimann, who surrendered his early lead to Bronson, held on to claim second place. Devin Dixon’s persistence and determination paid off with the third place finish, and Garret Stewart got a heat race win but finished fourth in the feature event.  And rounding out the top finishers was the 47 of Bill Howard, who hung tough for the top five result.

The final race of the night featured the Gladiator Division, and a new name on the starting roster looked to be ready to take control.  Sammy Dale had dominated his heat race and jumped out to an early lead in the feature, but a mechanical issue repeatedly slowed him to the point that he was unable to keep up.  That allowed Casey Feaster and Kyle Morse to wage battle for the lead, with Feaster eventually outrunning Morse.  In fact, Casey Feaster was uncatchable once he got in front, so Robert Graham had to settle for second while Kyle Morse finished third.  Sammy Dale limped home in the fourth spot and Rebecca Paugh claimed her first top five finish.

Ocala Speedway will be back in action again on Friday, March 18th, with the Miller Lite Night of Thousands.  the Hobby Stocks, Sportsman, and Amsoil Thunder Stocks, will all be competing in $1000 to win feature races.  Ocala’s Gladiators will round out the night’s action.  For more information on this and other events at America’s Dirt Track, please visit www.OcalaSpeedway.com.
