Joey Polewarczyk, Jr. Claims ACT Tour Goodyear Speedweeks Cup Title, Brian Hoar Wins Second 100 Lap Event

Contributed by: ACT Staff

New Smyrna, FL -February 15, 2011- Hudson, New Hampshire’s Joey Polewarczyk, Jr. worked his way through heavy traffic from his 18th starting position to finish 5th in the second round of the Goodyear Speedweeks Cup at New Smyrna Speedway in New Smyrna, Florida on Monday, February 14. The fifth place effort along with his win in Sunday’s 100 lapper earned him the low score of six points, just edging out seven-time ACT Late Model Tour Champion Brian Hoar who earned seven points in the Goodyear Speedweeks Cup standings.
Hoar of Williston, Vermont took the win in Monday night’s feature after starting 13th. Mark Lamberton of Mooers Forks, New York used a second place effort to claim third in the overall standings. In the final 100 lapper Jonathan Urlin of London, Ontario, Lee USA Speedway Champion Wayne Helliwell, Jr. of Dover, New Hampshire, and Polewarczyk completed the top five. Quebec’s Patrick Hamel, Massachusetts Eddie MacDonald, Quebecers Karl Allard and Patrick Laperle and Florida’s Pete Potvin rounded out the top ten.

The early stages of the event saw Goodyear Speedweeks Cup Standing leaders Polewarczyk, Laperle, Quebec’s Alex Labbé, Lamberton and Helliwell battle their way to the front. The outside groove appeared to be the fast lane as they worked their way to the front. Labbé fell out of contention after bouncing off the wall about midway through the event and lost a lap on pit road. Laperle made a pit stop for an adjustment while running in the top ten after the halfway mark and couldn’t make it back to the front.

In the overall Goodyear Speedweeks Cup standings, Polewarczyk and Hoar were followed by Lamberton, Helliwell and Laperle in the top five. Urlin, MacDonald, Allard, Hamel, and Quebec’s Donald Theetge completed the top ten.
Monday’s event was completed in 56 minutes and 12 seconds with seven total cautions. The lead was swapped seven times among six drivers.
The American Canadian Tour’s first trip to the 2011 Goodyear Speedweeks Cup at New Smyrna Speedway in New Smyrna, Florida has come to a close with Monday’s event. The ACT stars will have several months off before their seasons begin. The ACT Late Model Tour’s season opener will be Sunday, April 17 at Lee USA Speedway in Lee, New Hampshire, while the Série Castrol Edge will kick off its season on Saturday, May 21 at Autodrome St-Eustache in St-Eustache, Quebec.

PETE ORR MEMORIAL ORANGE BLOSSOM 100 POSTPONED BY RAIN

By Marty Little

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, FL. – With drivers in their cars and ready to begin the ninth running of the Pete Orr Memorial Orange Blossom 100 Saturday night at New Smyrna Speedway rain forced a halt to the action. An attempt was made to dry the track but a second downpour killed the evening and forced track officials to postpone the event until March 12.
A good field of 28 various type late models prepared to do battle on the lightning fast half-mile oval with Georgia invader Bubba Pollard setting quick time for the century run. It was Pollard’s first ever visit to the Florida East Coast facility but he was not intimidated one bit. Pollard drew a nine pill which put Justin Larson on the pole and Pollard in the nine slot for the start. The starting order will remain intact for the March 12 make up date.
The race honors the memory of the very popular Pete Orr, an Orlando area driver, who lost his life to cancer at age 46 in November 2002. Orr himself was a seven time winner of the Orange Blossom 100 event which moved to New Smyrna in 1989 from the defunct Palm Beach Fairgrounds Speedway where it began in the 1970s. Oddly enough it was at the tough highly banked half-mile Palm Beach facility where Orr achieved early success behind the wheel of a 1955 Chevrolet in the old Hobby division. Following Orr’s passing the Orange Blossom 100 took on Orr’s name beginning in 2003 and quickly became one of the “must win” events at the venerable Volusia County speedplant.

PETE ORR MEMORIAL AND SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD

By Jack Smith

This coming Saturday night, February 5th, New Smyrna Speedway hosts the Orange Blossom / Pete Orr 100, a race dedicated these days to the memory of one of Florida’s most memorable and beloved racers. Back in the day Pete Orr dominated the annual Orange Blossom race and fittingly it became the race to remember this very special member of Florida’s racing fraternity.

On a rainy day in 2004 at New Smyrna Speedway we presented for the first time the Pete Orr Sportsmanship Award. It went to a young driver who was making headlines throughout the year racing in the Florida Pro Series as well as FASCAR sanctioned late models. Jay Middleton impressed with not just his driving skills and dedication, but his gentlemanly ways as well.

One of the most memorable winners of this award for me was Bobby Sears.  One of the most humble drivers, teachers, friends and race champions in Florida was Mr Sears. The genuine emotion that night felt by everyone present showed what the Pete Orr Sportsmanship Award truly meant to those who have received it. (more…)
