Sonny Hartley tops TBARA at Desoto Super Speedway

by Marty Little
BRADENTON, Fla. – Veteran Sonny Hartley drove around Tommy Nichols on lap 16 and sped to his first TBARA feature victory in several season Saturday night’s 30 lap sprint car headliner at DeSoto Super Speedway.

Things got off to a rough start in the feature when outside front row starter Dakotah Stephens broke an axle and spun in front of the field on the first lap. The ensuing melee took out point leader Shane Butler, Dude Teate, Troy DeCaire and Stephens.

When the green waved following the clean up it was pole sitter Steve Heisler out front with Hartley, Tommy Nichols and Johnny Gilbertson in tow. Nichols quickly worked around Hartley for second but a caution waved on lap five when leader Heisler looped his mount to put Nichols in front over Hartley.

The field reformed and it was Nichols the point man but Hartley was on his game this night and kept the pressure on before making a pass for the lead on lap 16. Once in front it was no contest as Hartley motored away until a yellow waved for debris on lap 28. The offending trash was removed from the racing surface and Hartley never looked back, taking his No. 27 to the checkers ahead of Nichols, Larry Brazil, Jr., Bo Hartley and Ben Fritz.

Heat race victories went to DeCaire and Gilbertson.

Feature finish (30 laps) – 1. Sonny Hartley, 2. Tommy Nichols, 3. Larry Brazil, Jr. 4. Bo Hartley, 5. Ben Fritz, 6. Johnny Gilbertson, 7.David Retzlaff, 8. Steve Heisler, 9. Larry Brazil, 10. D.J. Hoelzle, 11. Dakotah Stephens, 12.Troy DeCaire, 13. Dude Teate, 14. Shane Butler, 15. Joey Aguilar DNS.

Stephen Darvalics Wins the Desoto ProTruck Feature Race at ASA Sanction Desoto Super Speedway with a True Talladega Finish

April 3 2010

By Tom Blakeley

It was a beautiful night for racing and the fans got lots of action as the temperatures rise so does the action.  The 25 lap Truck feature race was amazing.  The first yellow did not fly until lap 19 when Brent Huber spun out.  From that point on it was like a different race.  On lap 23 the second yellow flag flew as Andrew Gipson hit the wall on the backstretch.  The final lap proved to be something to remember.

Going into turn 4 the 48 truck of Bill Manfull pushed the 37 truck of young Nick Hernandez and sent him sideways, the trucks continued on towards the checkered flag and they again got into each other and crossed the finish line spinning and bouncing off the wall.  The fans went wild and the drivers made special hands signs to each other, but it was one great race.  The Truck results are as follows: (more…)

Larry Brazil tops TBARA at Desoto

March 29, 2010

by Marty Little and Tom Blakeley

BRADENTON, Fla. – Larry Brazil, Jr. held off the late race challenges of Dude Teate to win Saturday night’s 30 lap TBARA feature event at DeSoto Super Speedway.

Pole sitter David Retzlaff hustled into an early lead over Johnny Gilbertson and Brazil but the first yellow of the night waved on lap six for D.J. Hoelzle’s flat tire. On the restart it was Retzlaff still in commad but Brazil had taken up the challenge with Teate a close third. Less than a lap was complete before Tommy Nichols jumped a wheel of Shane Butler’s No. 18 and ricocheted hard into the outside wall to bring out the red flag. Nichols was unhurt but finished for the evening.

The green waved to begin lap seven with Retzlaff, Brazil and Teate in line at the front but Sonny Hartley’s mount shredded a right rear tire and the yellow waved once again. On the restart Brazil got a jump on Retzlaff and made the pass for the lead into turn one with Teate gaining the runner up spot.

Brazil continued to pace the event but Teate shadowed his every move looking for a way past. Finally, on lap 23 Teate used a lap car as a pick and took the top spot only to have the yellow wave for the spinning car of Joey Aguilar. The lineup revered back to the last green flag lap and Brazil went back in front over Teate, Butler and Bo Hartley.

The last seven laps were without incident and Brazil scored his first victory of the season. Teate claimed runner up money over Butler, Bo Hartley and Ben Fritz. Aguilar recovered to checker sixth ahead of Retzlaff, Steve Heisler, Jimmy Alivs and Gilbertson.

Heat races were won by Brazil, Butler and Retzlaff.

The TBARA as always put on the best show in Florida and there was a lot of great racing in the other classes tonight.  The Rockem-Sockem Bombers ran an intense 25 lap feature race with Randy Spicer and Allen Bragg running side by side practically the entire race.  The wide grooves of  ASA Sanctioned Desoto Super Speedway allows for this kind of action and the two never even touched each other.  It had the fans on their feet and the camera on at the finish.  Going to Victory Circle with the win was Randy Spicer in the 83 car.  Allen Bragg was second in the great looking 89 car while Michael Crooks took third in the 33 car.  Crooks had quite an evening of racing, he first ran at another track, packed up his car and made it to Desoto Super Speedway in time to run the feature event and take a hard earned 3rd place.  However, Randy Spicer was DQed in tech after the race with a spring issue so Allen Bragg is the official winner and John Stewart got the third place finish while Crooks moved up to 2nd.   Stay tuned for next weeks saga.

Russell Rolls with Second Hoosier Elite Win

By Rick Anges

Bradenton, Fl. The Hoosier Elite Series kicked off the ASA sanctioned racing action at “The High Banks” of Desoto Super Speedway with qualifying.

’09 Champion Anthony Campi held the fast time with a 14:715 run. That was until Tim Russell, the defending Icebreaker champ blistered the 3/8-mile with a lap of 14:560.

Campi followed Russell with second fast time. Third quick went to Jessie Dutilly followed by Blake Koch and Joe Boyd for the top five. The field was inverted the top 4 spots putting Blake Koch on the pole and Russell on the outside of the second row.

When the green waved it was Koch jumping into the top spot. Russell wasted no time and moved up into the second position and closed in the leader. Koch looked good as fended off Russell’s challenges for the lead.

Russell, the son of David Russell, knows his way around the Bradenton racetrack. He dominated here when he campaigned a Limited Late Model.

Koch who has competed in several different NASCAR series and ARCA slipped up as he came out of turn two allowing Russell to make the move and take over the top spot.

Russell would never look back taking his second H.E.S. win of the 2010 season. Koch came home in a solid second. Third went to Desoto veteran racer Jessie Dutilly in the former Joe Boyd ride. Boyd meanwhile would follow his old ride across the stripe in fourth with Robert “ShowTime” Yoho rounding out the top five.

Rudd Dominates Open Wheel 35 Lapper

By Rick Anges

Bradenton, Fl. Cold weather brought some fast times at the “High Banks” of Desoto Super Speedway. Those who braved the chilly temps were in store for a great night of exciting racing.

Open Wheel Modifieds

In a field that boasted several Track champions it was Eric Rudd showed the way in the thirty five-lap feature event for the modified class. Rudd had fought an ill handling car all day and right before the feature made several adjustments that paid off.

While Rudd was pulling away to almost a full straight away lead behind him the racing heated up. “The Rocketman” Wayne Jefferson and “The Rocket” Teddy Nelson were battling it out for the second spot.

Several cautions would bunch the field but each time the green flew it would be Eric Rudd jumping out and pulling away and when the checkers flew it was Rudd taking the well deserved win. “It’s always a good win when you can beat Jefferson,” said Rudd in his post race interview.

Second was Jefferson followed across the stripe was Nelson in third. Fourth was Sean McLaughlin and fifth Ralph Bowman.

Jefferson took the win in the heat race.

Q Auto and Injury Pure Stocks

There were some tense moments during the Pure Stock feature. Chelsea Lau and Jamie Wilson were battling hard and as they came out of turn two both cars went head on into the wall. Wilson was ok but Lau had to make a trip to hospital. She was checked out and although sore she was deemed ok.

When the green came back out it was Joshua Todd and Robert Crisp going at it for the top spot. The duo ran side by side for several laps until it was Todd sliding into the top spot and onto the win. Crisp would take second. Third went to Duane Best, fourth was Darrin Ellis and fifth Mike Wilson.

Heat wins went to Robert Crisp and Duane Best
