AUBURNDALE SPEEDWAY SEASON OPENER FEATURES SEVEN CLASSES SATURDAY NIGHT

By Dave Westerman

Coming off a very successful Winternationals program last week, Auburndale
Speedway is set and ready to begin the 2011 regular racing season with
seven divisions seeing action on Saturday night. The Sportsman cars
headline the class list this week and will be joined by the Modified Mini Stocks,
Street Stocks, Mini Stocks, V-8 Bombers, Scramblers and the Kids Club.

One of the biggest early-season announcements is that this will be the final
season of driving for Lakeland racing veteran Dave Dunkin. Dunkin, who
began his racing career back in the late 1960s and has always considered
Auburndale his home track, has countless feature wins and track
championships here including last years Sportsman title.

Dunkin is hoping for one last championship this year as he will campaign a
brand-new Sportsman machine. However, his biggest competition may come
from his own teammate. Mark Medeiros, who was runner-up to Dunkin in
Sportsman points in 2010 driving his own unsponsored effort, will be behind
the wheel of the car that carried Dunkin to the title last year. Dunkin will run
his familiar #71 "Blue Goose" while Medeiros will run car #171. The team
will have a third car as a back-up.

Long-time local car owner Chuck Harrison plans on fielding four Sportsman
machines this year for himself, Brandon "Bones" Duchscherer and sons
Chuck, Jr. and Dustin. Richard Elkins, Jr. will be back in action along with
Brandon Morris, Lance Daubach, Bart Weatherford and many others.

The Modified Mini Stock class, on the verge of being dropped early last year,
saw a big resurgence late in the year and looks to be a very strong division
for 2011. Mini Stock class champion Chris Spring will be moving into the
Mod Minis while former Mini Stock champion and last years runner-up
Fred Harrison, Jr. has a new Mod Mini ready for action. Harrison also
plans to branch out and run other tracks this year along with his home track.

Jason Rendell has a new Mod Mini ready to go plus a back-up car.
Ashton Hunt will run her first full season in the class and will join a great
group of drivers including Bo Collier, Mike Sweet, Dennis Jones, Nathan
Florian and many more.

Expect another strong field of cars in the Street Stock class for 2011
headed by defending champion Matt McCrary. Jeff Waterman and his
brother Mark will both return to action along with Dave Colpritt, Cody
McDuffie, Bobby Mobley, Kyle Hall, Kyle Peters and a host of others.

With the departure of Spring and Harrison from the Mini Stock ranks,
the class will be wide open this year and will see a new champion for
the first time in several years. A number of new driver/car combos are
expected as well as in the V-8 Bomber and Scrambler classes too. A
number of new drivers have been added to the Kids Club roster and that
class will be an interesting one as well in 2011.

Pit gates open this Saturday at 2PM, grandstands open at 5PM and
racing begins at 7PM. Adult admission is still just $12, seniors are
admitted for $10, kids 5-12 are $5 and all kids under the age of 5 get in
free. A family "four pack" (2 adults and 2 kids aged 5-12) remains at $25.

NOTES: The management of Auburndale Speedway would like to thank
all of the drivers, crews and staff for a very successful Winternationals
program last week that saw close to 100 Legend Cars and Bandoleros
in action over a five day period. U.S. Legends Car International has
already announced that Auburndale Speedway will once again be host
to the Winternationals in February 2012 and the event should be even
bigger that it was this year.

Auburndale Speedway owner/promoter Rex Guy will be absent from
the first night of racing at his track this year, but he has a good reason.
Guy will accompany his son Johnathan who will be taking part in the
first-ever race for the Florida United Promoters Late Model Series at
Desoto Super Speedway Saturday night. Between 25-30 cars are
expected for the season opener. The second race in the Series will
be held at Auburndale Speedway on March 19th.

The Legend Cars and Bandoleros will have the first week of the season
off to "recover" from the Winternationals, but look for a strong field for their
opening night on March 5th. Several new drivers will be in action in both
classes.

The Auburndale Little Racers program is already off to a strong start for 2011
as two new bicycles will be given away to a pair of lucky youngsters on
opening night courtesy Stewart's Auto Repair of Winter Haven. All kids aged
10 and under will get an extra ticket as they pass through the gates that
makes them eligible for the prizes. One girls bike and one boys bike will be
given away. Precision Air of Winter Haven and  Aaron's Rent to Own are
returning as corporate sponsors and there's more to come.
The kids will be having a banner year at Auburndale Speedway.

Drivers are going to be given the opportunity to have their own personal web
site at a very low cost through Palm Tree Computers of Oviedo. Look for
more information to be available in the next couple of weeks.

ABBOTT TOPS FINAL PRE-WINTERNATIONALS LEGEND CAR TUNE-UP AT AUBURNDALE SPEEDWAY

By Dave Westerman

Veteran Legend car driver Korry Abbot, the only Florida driver to qualify for last years Legends Million race at Charlotte Motor Speedway, drove to victory in the final Winter Warm-up feature race for the Legend cars Saturday afternoon at Auburndale Speedway.

Apopka’s Abbott out-gunned Lakeland driver Dakota Baggette, who had won the previous two races in January here as the local drivers prepare for an invasion of drivers from all over the U.S., Canada and elsewhere for the running of the Winternationals beginning on February 15th.

Abbott, a former Pro Division Winternationals champion, declared he and his team ready to take on all comers next month, while Baggette, who will probably run in the Young Lions division, continues to impress as he enters his second full season behind the wheel of a Legends car.

North Florida driver Austin Blankenship, who hails from High Springs, won the first heat and finished third in the feature trailed by Lynn Wiles and Zach Napoleon.

Thirteen cars were entered including Moncton, NB’s  Gary Bursey and Torstein Larson out of Narvick, Norway, who competed in all three January events. Rodney Pucak make the long tow from Wasilla, AK to take part this week as well. All three will be competing in the Winternationals that kick off on Tuesday, February 15th and continue through the following Saturday.

Bandoleros also took part this week with Michael Held of Orlando taking both the heat and feature races.

Auburndale Concludes 2010 Points Races

By Dave Westerman

GEORGIA INVADER RAYHALL TOPS IN LEGENDS – STREET STOCKS FALL TO HALL

Kyle Hall Gets first feature win of 2011

Auburndale Speedway concluded the 2010 regular season in style Saturday night with some great racing as three of the four regular classes saw first-time winners. A light rain shower delayed qualifying by about a half-hour but the night proceeded without any more precipitation and a bright full moon in the sky.

Even though several “regulars” like point champion Jake Perkins and runner-up Gerald White, Jr. failed to show, 22 Legend Cars still filled the pits with St. Cloud’s Brandon Thomson setting quick time at 15.046 seconds.

Kory Abbott’s 15.172 was second fast while Lynn Wiles and Georgia invaders Sean Rayhall and Mason Massey were fourth and fifth quick.

A re-draw among the top six qualifiers found Rayhall on the pole for the 50-lap feature race with sixth fastest timer Dakota Baggette on the outside pole. Quick qualifier Thomson started fourth.

The two Peach State youngsters, Rayhall and Massey quickly jumped out front at the start. Abbott passed Massey for second on lap three only to see that pass negated by the first caution flag that appeared for Danielle Stratton who spun on the backstretch. (more…)

Championships on the Line at Auburndale Speedway

By Dave Westerman

Auburndale Speedway closes out the 2010 regular racing season Saturday night with a six division program featuring extra-distance, extra-cash races for the Legend Cars and the Street Stocks. They will be joined by the Mini Stocks, Scramblers, and Bandoleros along with a ladies Powder Puff race.

Although the point season ended last week for the Legend Cars, they will get a jump on the upcoming Winternationals with a special 50 lap feature paying $500 to win. 2010 champion Jake Perkins will be in the field along with a host of others going for the extra cash and some bragging rights heading into the off season.

The only track championship as yet undecided is for the Street Stocks, however all point leader Matt McCrary has to do is start the special 40 lap feature and the title is his to claim. McCrary’s only challenger is Jeff Waterman who sits 56 points behind him after two straight DNF’s. Unless McCrary takes a victory this week, he would pull off the rare feat of winning a championship without winning a feature race. McCrary has had closet full of second-fifth place finishes this year and his consistency has kept him on top.

Scrambler points will be awarded this week as well, and although Kimberly Gullett has already laid claim to the championship, second place is nowhere near decided with Brian Tyre leading Richard Brown by just eight points.
Congratulations to Teddy Lively and Cameron White who wrapped up the 2010 Bandolero track championships last week in the Outlaw and Bandit classes respectively.

Pit gates open at 2PM Saturday and grandstand gates open at 5PM with racing beginning with time trials for the Legend Cars and Street Stocks at 7PM. Adult admission is just $12 and seniors are $10. Kids aged 5-12 are $5 and all children aged 4 and under are free. Family four-packs (two adults and two kids aged 5-12) are $25. For more information log on to www.auburndaleracing.com powered by Palm Tree Computers.

NOTES:

“Toys for Tots” will be collecting new, unwrapped toys at Auburndale Speedway this week. Please try and help as the program is overwhelmed with requests for toys this year. Just bring them and drop them in the box at the entrance way.

Once again another pair of youngsters will carry away bicycles this week courtesy of “Lindsey’s Little Racers.” Each child aged ten and under will get an extra “ticket” which will be good for the drawing for the bikes and a pair of Prize Packs which will include autographed photos of Sprint Cup driver Joe Nemechek. Thirty kids will get a free ice cream treat courtesy of Legend Car champ Jake Perkins and race fan Martin Stubbs.

Julius and Lindsey Bruce shocked everyone by announcing last week that they are retiring “Lindsey’s Little Racers” due to Julius’ health issues. The program, which has awarded over 100 bicycles to kids at the track since its inception in 2005 will not be going away, just changed a bit. Starting in
2011, the “Auburndale Little Racers” will continue the tradition set down by the Bruce family. Roger Turcott will be heading up the program and is looking for sponsors to help purchase bikes and other prizes for the kids as well as items for the weekly raffle which has become a big hit with the fans this year. Roger can be reached at (863)662-5146.

A new face in the Legend Car pit area last week was Torstein Larsen who hails from Narvik, Norway. Larsen, who winters in Vero Beach four months out of the year had his new car out last week and hopes to race here as often as possible. Also making the trip down from Moncton, NB in Canada was Legend Car veteran Gary Bursey who is getting some track time before the Winternationals in February.

The 2011 Schedule for Auburndale Speedway is now up at www.auburndaleracing.com. The schedule is subject to change but is pretty well set for the upcoming year. The Trucks will gain extra dates in 2011 and the popular Outlaw Modifieds will see action 14 times in 2011. Nine Late Model races are scheduled including a pair of Florida United Promoters Series dates in March and May. Sprint cars are also returning with one date already booked and more a possibility.

Look for Brent Tyler, who finished third in Truck points this year, to move up to a Late Model during 2011 along with continuing to run a few shows in his Cleanse-All sponsored Truck.

LILLEY TOPS AUBURNDALE TRUCKS BUT SOZIO TAKES CHAMPIONSHIP

By Dave Westerman

Tim Sozio -2010 Auburndale Truck Champion

Several classes crowned their point champions Saturday night at Auburndale Speedway under perfect racing conditions including a pair of youngsters who don’t even have a drivers liscense yet and a driver with so many track titles, he’s lost count.

Tim Sozio and Jim Cowhey, Jr. came into the evening’s Auburndale Truck races separated by just four points and Cowhey trimmed that to just two with a victory in the Truck heat race.

Cowhey immediately began to set the pace in the 25 lap feature but Sozio and Keith Lilley were not far behind right on his tail gate. Brent Tyler, who came into the night’s event third in points suffered engine problems in the heat race and started the feature just to earn last place points before he disappointedly pulled off after a lap was in the books.

Cowhey was determined to stay out front looking for his first win of the year, but Sozio, the DeBary youngster who just turned 15 years old, had other ideas and snared the lead on lap 17 while Cowhey drove a bit too hard into turn one trying to get in line in front of Lilley and looped his mount to bring out the caution.

Final Truck Race of the Season – Veterans Get in Free Saturday Night at Auburndale Speedway

by Dave Westerman

November 13th will be a lucky evening for Veterans and Active Military personnel as Auburndale Speedway will let all of them in absolutely free this week in honor of Veterans Day to enjoy a big eight division racing program.

The Auburndale Trucks make their final run of the season and will be joined by the Sportsman cars for their final race of 2010. Also on the card are the Legend Cars, Street Stocks, V-8 Bombers, Mini Stocks, Bandoleros and the Kids Club.

The battle to see who will be the 2010 Truck champion comes down to the final race this weekend as young Tim Sozio of DeBary leads Valrico’s Jim Cowhey, Jr. by just four points headed into this week’s action. Brent Tyler is still mathematically in the hunt sitting in third spot just 20 points in back of Cowhey.

Veteran driver Dave Dunkin is close to adding a Sportsman championship to his long list of accomplishments at Auburndale Speedway. Dunkin, who has been racing since the invention of the wheel, holds a 34 point advantage over Mark Medeiros headed into their final race for the class this week. (more…)

by Dave Westerman

After several weeks of picture-perfect weather, fans had to brave some cool temperatures Saturday night at Auburndale Speedway but were treated to some great red-hot racing.

Another good field of Street Stocks saw Bobby Mobley and point leader Matt McCrary win the heat races and start the 20 lap feature from the front row. McCrary set the pace for the first pair of laps before Mobley got by on the low side to snatch the top spot on lap three. (more…)
