Richards Blasts To $20,000-Plus Victory In Inaugural ‘Super Sunday Showdown’ At Bubba Raceway Park

Two-Time World of Outlaws Late Model Series Champ Dominates Bubba Army Late Model Winter Nationals Finale

OCALA, FL – Feb. 17, 2013 – Josh Richards of Shinnston, W.Va., closed the second annual Bubba Army Late Model Winter Nationals with a flourish, blasting to a convincing victory in the inaugural 75-lap ‘Super Sunday Showdown’ at Bubba Raceway Park.

The two-time World of Outlaws Late Model Series champion seized command of the event for good on lap 18, steering his Valvoline-sponsored Rocket Chassis house car by Jimmy Owens of Newport, Tenn., in a powerful sweep through turns three and four. He turned back a late threat from Scott James of Bright, Ind., en route to his second win of 2013 on the national tour and a lucrative payday of $20,650.

James battled brake problems in his Warrior Chassis house car over the final laps but held on to finish a WoO LMS career-best second, 3.311 seconds behind Richards. He marched forward from the 11thstarting spot to race in the runner-up spot from lap 34 to the checkered flag.

Don O’Neal of Martinsville, Ind., who started fourth and ran in the top five throughout the event, went a bit too hard with his tire-compound selection but still placed third in Larry Moring’s MasterSbilt machine. Rick Eckert of York, Pa., who won the finale of last year’s Winter Nationals, finished a season-high fourth in his Team Zero by Bloomquist car and 16th-starter Chub Frank of Bear Lake, Pa., scored a season-best finish of fifth in his Rocket.

Richards, who started third, ran second behind polesitter Owens until slipping briefly into the lead on lap nine. Owens regained command the following circuit but couldn’t repel the hard-charging Richards, who made his deciding move for the top spot on lap 18. (more…)

Lasoski Logs Record 20th Victory at Volusia Speedway Park

Pittman earns overall title at UNOH DIRTcar Nationals Presented by Summit

BARBERVILLE, Fla. – Feb. 17, 2013 – There was at least one happy dude parked in the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series Victory Lane on a frigid Sunday night.  It was the winningest dude in Volusia Speedway Park history, ‘The Dude’ – Danny Lasoski – who picked up his first win of the season and 20th career at the half mile to conclude the sprint car week at the 42nd annual UNOH DIRTcar Nationals Presented by Summit Racing Equipment.

“I really like this place,” he said wearing a big grin.

Lasoski shared the spotlight with Daryn Pittman, who was crowned the overall champion of the UNOH DIRTcar Nationals Presented by Summit and received a unique three-foot, bronzed gator trophy. His win, runner-up and fifth-place finish during the three-day event – which combined qualifying, heat races and feature points – earned enough points to edge Paul McMahan by 18.

“We had a conversation on our way down here between me and the whole crew on what our goals were for the year and the No. 1 goal was to come here and win that gator,” Pittman said. “I’m just having a lot of fun. Just a great way to start the year off accomplishing one of our goals that we had set out.”

As impressive as Pittman’s weekend was, including a late rally from ninth to fifth in the final three laps on Sunday, Lasoski stole the show to win a wild feature. With the temperature at 35 degrees when the cars were pushed onto the track for the main event, it sure heated up quickly. (more…)

OCALA, FL – Feb. 16, 2013 – Darrell Lanigan of Union, Ky., continued his mastery of Bubba Raceway Park, winning Saturday night’s 50-lap Bubba Army Late Model Winter Nationals A-Main in dramatic fashion.

The defending World of Outlaws Late Model Series champion slipped his Cornett-powered Rocket car past Mike Marlar of Winfield, Tenn., for the lead coming to the white flag, propelling him to his second Winter Nationals triumph in as many evenings. The $10,150 victory was his fifth in seven career starts over the past four years at the three-eighths-mile, D-shaped oval.

Lanigan, 42, became the first driver to win twice during the young 2013 WoO LMS season. He is coming off a championship season that saw him establish numerous records on the national tour, including a new single-season mark of 15 A-Mains victories. (more…)

Michigan racer locks into Monday night’s $5,000-to-win Gator Championship
BARBERVILLE, Fla. – Feb. 16, 2013 – Jacob Poel made his first visit to the UNOH DIRTcar Nationals Presented by Summit Racing Equipment a memorable one by capturing the Gator Championship qualifier Saturday night at Volusia Speedway Park.

“We just swapped a motor out yesterday, after having one problem after another,” said Poel, of Spring Lake, Mich. “I ran third in the heat and I don’t know where we started in that feature but the car was just absolutely perfect. I don’t know really what else to say. It was an amazing feeling. I’m just glad to be able to come down here with all the people that have supported me and got me here.”

Lanigan STILL On A Roll In The World Of Outlaws

Jim Rouse, BRP Media Ocala, FL – It’s the World of Outlaws Late Model Series and the Bubba Army Hobby Stocks presented by Ferrea Racing Components turn to take to the 3/8 mile track of Bubba Raceway Park and the action is as hot as Darrell Lanigan’s 2012 season.

Our Hobby Stock drivers sent what Grady Christian called “6 of the best in Florida” and they all went at it for a $1000 prize. Kevin Durden dominated the first 13 laps but when it came to crunch time he had plenty of good company on his back. Going into turn 3 Sean Monoghan dove for 2nd and lost it all as his #51 broke loose to set-up the Green White Checkers. Durden had Tim Gay, winner last time out, and “Shady” Grady Christian trailing and when Gay fell off the pace it let Christian squeeze right into 2nd from starting position #6. Gay actually brought the yellow out as he was unable to exit the track which left “Big KD” to hold off “Shady Grady” and Brian Morgan. Christian seized the opportunity and forgot about the berm in turn 1, held his ground, and escaped the leader. Car #36 led just half a lap but it was the most important part and Grady Christian earned a cool $1000. Durden was a disappointing 2nd while Brian Morgan, Hunter Gustafson, and Devin Walker rounded out the top 5, respectively.

For the 6th time the World of Outlaws Late Models made the trip to Bubba Raceway Park and every driver was trying to make the trip worth it, especially with $7000 on the line. Action started off quickly when Josh Richards, Mike Marlar, and Darrell Lanigan all broke the track record set by Lanigan 364 days ago. Richards won the Ohlen Racing Shocks Fast Qualifer Award with a 13.771 (98.03 MPH) that probably won’t last very long with the way the track has been progressing. The 4 heat races were quite simple as the top 4 of each would lock-in to the A Main feature- Richards, Marlar, and Lanigan all won their heats from pole and Brady Smith won the fourth from the outside pole. The B Main races were quite entertaining as local driver and WoO Rookie of the Year candidate Dillon Wood charged to 2nd and earned the 20th starting spot. Wood joined Ivedent Lloyd, Jr. and Mark Whitener as the Local Representatives. (more…)

Competition is Stout at UNOH DIRTcar Nationals Presented by Summit

The five-day sprint car event begins on Wednesday, Feb. 13, at Volusia Speedway Park

BARBERVILLE, Fla. – Feb. 6, 2013 – The Florida freeways are littered with a variety of multicolored rigs headed for the sun to kick off the 2013 season.

Approximately 40 sprint cars are expected at Volusia Speedway Park for the 42nd annual UNOH DIRTcar Nationals Presented by Summit Racing Equipment, which starts with a practice session on Tuesday, Feb. 12, before two nights of UNOH All Star Circuit of Champions competition and three nights of World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series action on the world’s fastest half mile.

While the usual Outlaws are set to begin another chase at the championship, a group of top-notch talent from across the country isn’t racing for points. They’re after the loot and the unique gator trophy.

Former World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series champion Danny Lasoski heads the drivers who will compete on the tour sparingly. Lasoski, who claimed two of the five features and the series’ season opener last year, has earned a record 19 feature victories at Volusia Speedway Park.

“I don’t know if its pep in our step, but it’s definitely confidence,” he said. “You’ve been cooped up all winter and you’re just excited to be here. As luck would have it we run pretty well there, too.

“Mostly, the race track fits my driving. I love the big, fast half miles.”

Lasoski isn’t the only former winner headed to Volusia Speedway Park.

Dale Blaney won twice last season – the Commonwealth Clash at Lernerville Speedway and the Sixth annual PEAK Motor Oil World of Outlaws World Finals Presented by NAPA Auto Parts at The Dirt Track at Charlotte – to give the 1998 Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year eight career victories. (more…)

Volusia Speedway Park Is Ready For 12 Nights Of Action During UNOH DIRTcar Nationals Presented by Summit Racing Equipment

Stage Will Be Set For Sunshine State’s Festival Of Speed Feb. 12-23 After Saturday’s Open Practice Session

BARBERVILLE, FL – Feb. 1, 2013 – The time has come for engines to fire, wheels to turn and clay to fly at Volusia Speedway Park.

This Saturday (Feb. 2) the famed D-shaped, half-mile oval outside Daytona Beach springs to life for the first time in 2013, hosting a four-hour practice session (3-7 p.m.) open to racers from all divisions that will set the stage for the 42nd UNOH DIRTcar Nationals Presented by Summit Racing Equipment. The track’s blockbuster meet featuring Sprint Cars, dirt Late Models, Big-Block Modifieds and UMP Modifieds runs from Feb. 12-23.

“We can’t wait to get rolling,” said DIRTcar Northeast marketing director Jeff Hachmann, who migrated south to Florida in December to oversee marketing efforts and other details of the UNOH DIRTcar Nationals by Summit. “A lot of people have been working hard for a couple months to get the facility ready for one of the country’s biggest dirt-track events of the season, so it’s going to be exciting for all of us to finally see cars get back out there on the track this Saturday.”

A group of World Racing Group staffers – led by Lernerville Speedway general manager Gary Risch Jr. and also including track-prep specialists Larry Fink and Chad Alchier, World of Outlaws Late Model Series pit steward Tyler Bachman, DIRTcar Northeast electrician Dave Dixon, Lernerville employee Jeremy Timko and Volusia office manager Shelly Minchew – have joined together to spearhead preparation of Volusia’s track surface, grounds and infrastructure for February’s racing spectacular. Among the improvements that visitors to the UNOH DIRTcar Nationals by Summit will notice are improved lighting in the lower ‘Gator Pond’ pit area and newly-erected bleachers in the upper pit area. Qualifying Key at UNOH DIRTcar Nationals Presented by Summit

Volusia Speedway Park is the fastest half mile on the WoO STP Sprint Car Series

BARBERVILLE, Fla. – Jan. 16, 2013 – Qualifying is an art, a craft, a skill.

That is never more evident than at the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series season-opening event – the 42nd annual UNOH DIRTcar Nationals Presented by Summit Racing Equipment, beginning with a practice night on Feb. 12 at Volusia Speedway Park.

Succeeding the practice are two days of UNOH All Star Circuit of Champions events followed by three straight World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series races, each showcasing the top sprint car drivers in the country.

It all starts with qualifying on the ultra-fast track, which is known as the fastest half mile in the world after Paul McMahan averaged an astounding 143 miles per hour during his qualifying session of a 2011 race when he clocked a track-record lap of 12.569 seconds.

“Volusia is really crucial where you qualify,” Chad Kemenah said. “That might be one of the more qualifying dominant race tracks. It’s just so fast. You need to start up front.”

The top 10 qualifiers were separated by less than one tenth of a second during last season’s opening World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series race.

“It’s the difference between using provisional and not using a provisional,” Daryn Pittman said. “You don’t typically find a tighter group of cars qualifying than you do there. If you’re off a tenth or two tenths you’re in danger of missing the inversion.”

Every night is a doubleheader and there are FREE Fan Pit Passes with every ticket. Tickets can be ordered online by clicking WorldofOutlaws.com/tickets or by calling 877-395-8606.

Gibson Honored with Outstanding Contribution to the Sport Award

Longtime World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series announcer given prestigious honor

CONCORD, N.C. – Jan. 14, 2013 – Late last summer amidst an epic championship battle, World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series veteran announcer Johnny Gibson surpassed a unique milestone.

Gibson, who has worked for the premier sprint car series since 1995 and been the series announcer since 1997, attended his 1,500th consecutive World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series race. Take note, that’s not 1,500 overall; it’s 1,500 straight events that Gibson has seen.

This past weekend, the North American Sprint Car Poll recognized Gibson’s tireless efforts by honoring him with the 2012 Outstanding Contribution to the Sport Award, which is the highest honor as voted by industry insiders.

“I’m very honored that there are people in the sport that feel I’ve actually had something to offer,” Gibson said. “It’s really unbelievable to me that I could get to this point from being just a race fan because that’s really all I am. I just get to talk about it.”

Gibson joins a variety of esteemed past recipients, including Kasey Kahne, the late Fred Brownfield, Tony Stewart, Jack Hewitt, Brad Doty, Steve Kinser, the late Don Martin, Earl Baltes and the late World of Outlaws Founder Ted Johnson, among others. (more…)
