Ian Madsen Earns First World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Win

091413_DeerCreekVL_webSPRING VALLEY, Minn. – Sept. 14, 2013 – Ian Madsen cruised to the first World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series victory of his career on Saturday night at Deer Creek Speedway’s Clash at the Creek.

The Australia native and brother of Kerry Madsen was chasing Craig Dollansky in the early going at the 3/8-mile banked oval when Dollansky’s car had a mechanical issue on lap 6 of the 35-lap main event. Ian Madsen surged into the lead as Dollansky pulled into the infield, then he had to hold off championship leader Daryn Pittman on two restarts in a light rain.

Both times Madsen pulled away from Pittman to finally earn his first series victory, and together with Kerry become only the fifth set of brothers to win World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series races. The Madsens join Bobby and Joey Allen, Dave and Dale Blaney, Kenny and Dean Jacobs, and Sammy and Jeff Swindell as brothers with World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car wins.

Pittman advanced from fifth to second in the Kasey Kahne Racing Great Clips GF1 to increase his lead in the overall championship standings to 70 points with eight A-mains remaining in the season. Paul McMahan was quickest in qualifying for the 16th time this season and finished right behind Pittman in third. Steve Kinser and Joey Saldana rounded out the top five. (more…)

Wins Second Straight World of Outlaws Late Model Series Race, Third Consecutive Major Event At Illinois Bullring

091313_BelleClairVLBELLEVILLE, IL – Sept. 13, 2013 – Brandon Sheppard has Belle-Clair Speedway figured out.

The fast-rising 20-year-old star from New Berlin, Ill., continued his mastery of the unique one-fifth-mile bullring on Friday night, marching forward from the eighth starting spot to capture the World of Outlaws Late Model Series ‘Photobilly 50’ for the second consecutive year.

It was the third straight major-event victory at Belle-Clair for Sheppard, who also won the demanding track’s DIRTcar Summer Nationals A-Main earlier this year en route to being crowned the ‘Hell Tour’ champion for the first time in his career.

“We got our stuff really good here,” said Sheppard, who picked up a $10,050 check for winning a race run in memory of late Belle-Clair track photographer Charles Haffer Jr. “Actually tonight was the best we’ve had it out of all three times we’ve won here. We were able to maneuver around a lot.” (more…)

Schatz Earns 20th World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Win of 2013

Five-time champ reaches his single-season milestone at Clay County

SPENCER, Iowa – Sept. 13, 2013 – Donny Schatz is running out of milestones to accomplish in his career. On Friday night at Clay County Fair Speedway, he reached another mark when he earned his 20th World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series victory of the year, the first time he’s reached that plateau in a season.

The victory was also the 144th of his career, moving the five-time series champion and seven-time Knoxville Nationals winner to within nine wins of Mark Kinser for third all-time.

It wasn’t easy, though. Schatz was chased to the checkered flag by a resurgent Joey Saldana after Mark Dobmeier pushed him in the early going before settling for third.

Championship leader Daryn Pittman minimized the point damage from Schatz’s victory by finishing fourth after starting 11th. Jason Sides was strong throughout the feature and rounded out the top five.

After a couple of attempts at the original start polesitter Kerry Madsen jumped out to the lead, but it was Schatz who used his position on the outside of the front row to charge in front as the first lap was completed. The North Dakotan then went on to lead the next 29 laps to claim the win. (more…)

Blankenship Reaches Mountaintop Of Dirt Late Model Racing With Career-First Victory In DIRTcar UMP-Sanctioned World 100 At Eldora Speedway

West Virginia Driver Charges Forward From 12th Starting Spot For $46,000 Triumph

090713_World100VLROSSBURG, OH – Sept. 7, 2013 – Welcome to the elite, John Blankenship.

The 32-year-old driver from Williamson, W.Va., reached the mountaintop of dirt Late Model racing on Saturday night, racing forward from the 12th starting spot to capture the 43rd annual DIRTcar UMP-sanctioned World 100 at Eldora Speedway.

Blankenship passed Terry Phillips of Springfield, Mo., for the lead on lap 53 and never looked back. He secured the biggest win of his decade-long racing career – a star-making triumph worth $46,000 – by reaching the checkered flag 1.757 seconds ahead of Union, Ky.’s Darrell Lanigan of Union, Ky., whose late bid to finally put the World 100 on his resume fell short.

A low-key racer who has come of age as a championship contender this season on the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series, Blankenship kept an even keel during his Victory Lane celebration with his father/car owner Don and crew. He had a hard time grasping the significance of what he had accomplished in front of a massive crowd that ranked as one of the largest in the history of the historic high-banked, half-mile oval. Kyle Larson Powers to World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Win at Antioch

Holds off Allard, Kaeding for California podium sweep at second consecutive event

090813_Antioch_top3_wANTIOCH, Calif. – Sept. 8, 2013 – Kyle Larson held off Jonathan Allard to lead a Golden State podium sweepon Sunday night at Antioch Speedway for his second World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series victory of the season and the fourth series win of his career.

California natives Tim Kaeding and Kyle Hirst were third and fourth in their Roth Motorsports cars while Chad Kemenah was the top-finishing World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series racer in fifth. The event marked the end of the Gold Rush Tour, which was comprised of eight races in 10 nights.

Larson, one of racing’s fastest rising star’s, earned the pole for the 30-lap A-main after dominating the dash. He led the field to green and worked the low side of the track early. After a caution with eight laps down, Larson started testing the top groove but was forced to constantly defend attacks from Allard. Late in the race the groove moved back down to the bottom and Larson was quick to shift. Allard and Kaeding tightened the gap in the final laps, but neither was able to make a charge for the lead. 1208568_515468461864595_881397669_n-590x393BOONE, Iowa (Sept. 7) – Dylan Smith heads the list of first-time champions crowned Saturday night at the IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals fueled by Casey’s.

Smith led the last 10 circuits in winning the Modified main event at Boone Speedway. Restarts erased each of Chris Mills’ big leads and helped open the door for Smith, who then had to hold off Jon Snyder following a late restart.

“I knew if we could stay in the top four we’d have a shot at it in the end,” said Smith, who earned $5,800 for his efforts, including a $3,800 Speedway Motors Weekly Racing bonus. “I really didn’t want to see that yellow come with two laps to go but it all worked out.”

Keith White and Shawn Kilgore completed the top four. Kilgore had started 15th. (more…)

McCreadie & Lanigan Bag $5,000 Victories On Second World 100 Preliminary Night At Eldora Speedway

090613_TMacVLROSSBURG, OH – Sept. 6, 2013 – Tim McCreadie of Watertown, N.Y., and Darrell Lanigan of Union, Ky., scored $5,000 triumphs in the Twin 25-lap features that highlighted Friday night’s second preliminary program of the 43rd annual DIRTcar UMP-sanctioned World 100 at Eldora Speedway.

Both World of Outlaws Late Model Series regulars took advantage of front-row starting spots to lead their respective headliners from flag-to-flag, but their roads to Victory Lane were far from easy.

McCreadie, 39, recorded his long-awaited first career dirt Late Model win at the high-banked, half-mile oval in the event reserved for the evening’s odd-number qualifiers. He grabbed the lead from the pole position at the initial green flag and was never headed in a caution-free race, but he barely outlasted the late-charging Gregg Satterlee of Rochester Mills, Pa., who swiped the runner-up spot from Jeep VanWormer of Pinconning, Mich., on the final lap.

Lanigan, 43, raced off the outside pole to capture the feature for the even-number qualifiers after surviving mid-race challenges from John Blankenship of Williamson, W.Va., and Jared Landers of Batesville, Ark., and outrunning fellow WoO LMS traveler Shane Clanton of Zebulon, Ga., in the final circuits.
