Pettyjohn Runs Race Of His Life To Capture Tuesday Night’s DIRTcar Nationals by Summit Late Model Headliner

Delaware Driver Calls $7,000 Victory At Volusia Speedway Park The Biggest Win Of His Career

021814_DCN_PettyjohnBARBERVILLE, FL – Feb. 18, 2014 – Kenny Pettyjohn was almost at a loss for words after driving away from a star-studded field to capture Tuesday night’s 30-lap DIRTcar Late Model A-Main during the 43rd DIRTcar Nationals Presented by Summit Racing Equipment at Volusia Speedway Park.

A 46-year-old veteran from Millsboro, Del., who has been slinging cars around dirt tracks for nearly 30 years, Pettyjohn was victorious for the first time in more than a decade’s worth of February trips to the sprawling half-mile oval outside Daytona Beach.

“Shoot, I can’t believe I’m standing here,” Pettyjohn said after emerging from his Rocket Chassis machine in Victory Lane. “I think this tops every race that I ever won in my life. To a lot of these guys this wouldn’t be that big a deal, but for me this took a lifetime.” (more…)

Florida’s Ivedent Lloyd Jr. Powers to DIRTcar Late Model Victory

Florida Driver Turns Back National Stars For $7,000 DIRTcar Late Model Triumph

021714_DCN_LM_FeatureBARBERVILLE, FL – Ivedent Lloyd Jr. did his home state proud on Monday night at Volusia Speedway Park.

The 47-year-old veteran from Ocala, Fla., authored one of the drives of his career, turning back a field filled with national stars to win the 30-lap DIRTcar Late Model A-Main that opened the full-fender portion of the 43rd DIRTcar Nationals Presented by Summit Racing Equipment.

An accomplished Sunshine State racer who has won often in local and regional competition at the half-mile oval, Lloyd became the first driver from Florida to capture a dirt Late Model feature during the DIRTcar Nationals by Summit since Jacksonville’s Earl Pearson Jr. topped a DIRTcar-sanctioned event on Feb. 10, 2009. He earned $7,000 for his efforts.

“This is the biggest win,” said Lloyd, who has driven Late Models on both dirt and asphalt for three decades. “There’s races that pay more money, but this is by far the career-topper, to win this. To have all these guys here and race these guys, it’s neat.” (more…)

Ty Dillon’s DIRTcar Nationals Domination Continues with Gator Championship Win at Volusia Speedway Park

021714_DCN_MOD_FeatureBARBERVILLE, Fla. – Feb. 17, 2014 – Ty Dillon has dominated the DIRTcar Nationals presented by Summit Racing Equipment this year, and on Monday night at Volusia Speedway Park he earned his biggest victory of the week when he led wire-to-wire in the Gator Championship for DIRTcar UMP Modifieds.

DIRTcar Late Models also helped kick off the second week of action at the DIRTcar Nationals with Florida late model hero Ivedent Lloyd Jr. holding off Wisconsin’s Brady Smith for the victory.

Monday was Dillon’s night, though. He drew the outside pole for the 30-lapper alongside Kenny Wallace and quickly jumped in front. Dillon methodically edged away lap-after-lap until a mid-race caution bunched the field. Ty Dillon charged back to green with Nick Hoffman, Wallace and Matt Westfall in tow. Austin Dillon, Ty’s brother who won the Daytona 500 pole and was seeking his second win in as many nights, quickly picked off Westfall and Wallace and set his sights on Hoffman as he tried to catch his brother in front. Hail to the King: Kinser Holds Off Pittman at DIRTcar Nationals

Legendary racer kicks off ‘Salute to the King’ tour with thriller at Volusia

021614_KINSER_WRAPBARBERVILLE, Fla. – Steve Kinser might be winding down his career this season with the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series, but on Sunday night at the DIRTcar Nationals presented by Summit Racing Equipment Kinser was wound up in a huge victory celebration after he won a thriller in front of a packed house at Volusia Speedway Park.

Kinser showed his competitive fire still burns when he and defending series champion Daryn Pittman waged an incredible duel over the final eight laps before Kinser slid to the lead and grabbed the checkered flag for the 577th feature victory in his hall-of-fame career.

Coming off a restart with 22 laps down, Kinser chose the high side in his Tony Stewart Racing Bad Boy Buggies ride while Pittman settled into the bottom line in his Kasey Kahne Racing Great Clips car. Pittman charged out quickly and reclaimed the lead as Kinser dove to the bottom in turn one and tried to slide in front. The two traded slide jobs, Kinser wouldn’t be denied and by lap 24 he was back in front.

“I didn’t know where to go on the restart and I decided to take the top line and just carry some speed and just have it,” said Kinser, 59, of Bloomington, Ind. “He beat me out of there and it was a good race. You hate to lose one on the restart. I didn’t think anyone could pass me when I had a clear track. It doesn’t matter, we got the win that’s all that counts.” (more…)

Lanigan Finds Winning Touch With Club 29 Car In Sunday Night’s Bubba Army Dirt Late Model Winter Nationals Finale

Kentucky Star Holds Off O’Neal For $12,000 Top Prize At Bubba Raceway Park

021614_LaniganVLOCALA, FL – Darrell Lanigan of Union, Ky., ended the Bubba Army Dirt Late Model Winter Nationals on a high note, breaking through to capture Sunday night’s 60-lap World of Outlaws Late Model Series ‘Super Sunday Showdown’ at Bubba Raceway Park.

Finding the winning touch with his self-designed Club 29 car after top-five finishes in each of the first two events of the weekend, Lanigan passed Don O’Neal of Martinsville, Ind., for the lead on lap seven and controlled the remainder of the distance. The two-time WoO LMS champion turned back a late challenge from O’Neal while racing through lapped traffic to pocket the race’s $12,650 top prize.

O’Neal settled for second place, about one second behind Lanigan at the checkered flag. The driver of NASCAR star Clint Bowyer’s Barry Wright car once again fell short of his elusive first-ever WoO LMS triumph.

Friday-night winner Brady Smith of Solon Springs, Wis., finished close behind O’Neal in third place in his Rocket machine, sending him out the gates of the three-eighths-mile oval with the WoO LMS points lead. He scored a podium finish in all three events. (more…)

Super-Sub Sheppard Powers To Convincing Victory In Saturday’s Bubba Army Dirt Late Model Winter Nationals A-Main

Young Star Drives Rocket Chassis House Car To Clean Sweep Of Program At Bubba Raceway Park

021514_BSheppVLOCALA, FL – Feb. 15, 2014 – Just call him Super Sub.

Continuing his spectacular performance as the interim driver of the Rocket Chassis house car, Brandon Sheppard of New Berlin, Ill., powered to a convincing victory in Saturday night’s 50-lap World of Outlaws Late Model Series A-Main at Bubba Raceway Park.

Sheppard, 21, surged forward from the fifth starting spot to take the lead from hometown favorite Ivedent Lloyd Jr. of Ocala, Fla., on lap seven and never looked back. The 2014 DIRTcar Summer Nationals and DIRTcar Late Model national champion easily handled four restarts over the remaining distance to defeatFriday-night winner Brady Smith of Solon Springs, Wis., by 4.348 seconds in the second night of action during the third annual Bubba Army Dirt Late Model Winter Nationals.

Lloyd, who started from the pole position and led laps 1-6, swapped second place with Smith twice before settling for a career-best WoO LMS finish of third. Tim Fuller of Watertown, N.Y., ran as high as second midway through the race but slipped to fourth at the finish and outside-polesitter Darrell Lanigan of Union, Ky., placed fifth after starting from the outside pole. Schatz Strikes, Dillon Repeats on Huge Night at DIRTcar Nationals

Tony Stewart Racing driver pushes from 11th to win at DIRTcar Nationals presented by Summit Racing Equipment

021514_DCN_SCHATZ_VLweb

BARBERVILLE, Fla. – Feb. 15, 2014 – It was only the second World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series race of the season on Saturday night at Volusia Speedway Park, but Donny Schatz looks like he’s in midseason form after charging from 11th to victory in front of packed grandstands at the DIRTcar Nationals presented by Summit Racing Equipment.

Then in the DIRTcar UMP Modified nightcap, Ty Dillon motored his way to victory lane for second consecutive night, putting himself in prime position for a shot at Monday’s Gator Championship.

But Saturday night belonged to Tony Stewart Racing’s Schatz. Just when it looked like Kasey Kahne Racing’s Cody Darrah was cruising toward victory in the 30-lap main event, Schatz took off, eventually passing last year’s World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series champion Daryn Pittman for second, then charging past Darrah for the win.

“It was a lot of fun, you kind of had to pass everywhere,” said Schatz, the five-time series champion from Fargo, N.D. “We didn’t have the greatest night (Friday) night, but you’ll have that in racing. It’s how quick you rebound, came back today with had an awesome race car and got ourselves qualified well. Every time we made changes we went the right direction. It was a fun race, it was awesome and fast. Sometimes I didn’t know where I was going to end up. I don’t know anybody who doesn’t come to the race to win, but we were extra hungry leaving here (Friday) night, we felt like we had a decent run from the back. It just wasn’t very good and we were a long ways off on balance. Those guys are what make that car fast and I get the fun job.” (more…)

Brad Sweet, Ty Dillon Win DIRTcar Nationals Thrillers at Volusia

Sweet captures World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series opener, Dillon holds off his brother to grab DIRTcar UMP Modified feature

021414_DCN_SP_VLgraphic_600x400BARBERVILLE, Fla. – Brad Sweet powered his Kasey Kahne Racing car to victory in the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series season opener on Friday night at the DIRTcar Nationals presented by Summit Racing Equipment at Volusia Speedway Park while Ty Dillon held off his brother, Austin, over the final three laps to win the DIRTcar UMP Modified feature.

Sweet, who is going to race full-time with the Outlaws in 2014, showed he’ll be a championship contender by surging past Paul McMahan in the first corner with two laps to go for the victory after McMahan and Tim Shaffer battled each other for the first 28 laps in the 30-lap A-main. Australian Kerry Madsen joined the mix and finished third behind Sweet and McMahan.

“It’s always good to start off with a win,” said Sweet, of Grass Valley, Calif. “These races are tough to win. I mean you can win the first race out and not win another one the rest of the year, to get the first one under our belt this quick and feel this good with our car and get a new team together like this and be fast out of the gate quick is a good sign. You always want to start the year out strong. It’s a bit more important this year to be consistent where last few years we would race with these guys and if we had a bad night it was just a bad night, it didn’t hurt us in the points. Now we’ve got to pay attention to that a little bit and be a little more consistent.” (more…)

Brady Smith Steers New Rocket Car To Victory In World of Outlaws Late Model Season Opener At Bubba Raceway Park

Wisconsin Standout Holds Off Substitute Rocket Chassis House Car Driver Brandon Sheppard For $7,000 Triumph

021414_BRPNt1VLOCALA, FL – Feb. 14, 2014 – Brady Smith loves his new car.

After steering the three-race-old machine to a wire-to-wire victory in Friday night’s caution-free 35-lap World of Outlaws Late Model Series season opener at Bubba Raceway Park, Smith’s decision to join the Rocket Chassis fold in 2014 was vindicated.

“We just couldn’t be happier with the support we’ve been getting (from Rocket Chassis),” Smith said after capturing the milestone 400th WoO LMS A-Main contested since the national tour was reborn in 2004 under the World Racing Group banner. “All those guys over there – (Steve) Baker, Mark (Richards), Cody (Duncan), Matt (Barnes), Josh (Richards) – have been just so helpful. I couldn’t be happier with the effort they’ve been giving me to help us get going here.”

Smith, 36, of Solon Springs, Wis., took off from his pole position starting spot and led the entire distance in his Vic Hill-powered car, but his $7,050 triumph in the first of three Bubba Army Dirt Late Model Winter Nationals events didn’t come easy. He had to hold off a furious late-race challenge from Brandon Sheppard of New Berlin, Ill. – the substitute driver of Mark Richards’s Rocket Chassis house car while reigning WoO LMS champ Josh Richards is sidelined by undisclosed medical issues – to secure his fifth career win on the WoO LMS.
