Grass Valley, Calif., Native Takes the Checkered in Front of Family and Friends on Night one of Calistoga Double-Header

040514_SP_CALISTOGA_VLCALISTOGA, Calif. – April 5, 2014 – It was friends and family night for California native Brad Sweet on Saturday at Calistoga Speedway after he held off Brian Brown in a thriller for his third World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series victory of the season.

Sweet and Brown flipped the lead several times in traffic before Sweet, of Grass Valley, Calif., pulled ahead for the victory in the waning laps, kicking off a victory celebration that included several of his friends and family members from his native Golden State.

Brown, who lost the lead while working through lapped traffic, held on for the runner-up finish. Joey Saldana started and finished in third while Donny Schatz was fourth and another hometown hero, Rico Abreu, rounded out the top-five on the first of two nights of World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series action at Calistoga.

Brown jumped out to a quick lead over pole-sitter Schatz. Brown continued to lead on lap six when the caution flew for David Gravel, winner of the previous event at Merced Speedway last Friday night. On the restart, a red flag would fly for contact with Bud Kaeding and Austin Wheatley. The ensuing restart was single-file as Brown continued to lead. On lap 11 the leaders hit lapped traffic at the half-mile oval. A bobble in traffic on lap 12 cost Brown the lead as Sweet, behind the wheel of the Kasey Kahne Racing SurePointMedical.com #49 drove by him in turn four. (more…)

Desoto Speedway
On a night when the Safety-Kleen TBARA Sprint Car series was honoring one of their pioneering drivers, Joey Aguilar made sure that he was honoring his mentor in a proper way with a pass coming to the white flag that allowed him to take his second consecutive win to open the season.
Aguilar – whose last visit to the speedway ended with a helicopter ride to a local hospital after he received burns from an oil line fire – started ninth in the inaugural Larry Brazil Memorial 30-lap event. As polesitter Tommy Nichols paced the field for the first 15 laps of the race, Aguilar, Shane Bulter and Ben Fritz were making quick work of the rest of the field on their way to the front of the field. Fritz, who started sixth, was already up to second by the end of lap one.
Butler made his way past Fritz for second at the end of lap 10 and quickly ran Nichols down to battle for the lead. Butler used a diamond manuver where he went high in the middle of turns three and four and shot to the bottom of the race track coming off the corner. Butler won a drag race with Nichols into the first turn. (more…)

Abreu Claims First World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series Victory

Californian cruised into victory lane at Thunderbowl Raceway

031514_RICO_WINSTULARE, Calif. – March 15, 2014 – Rico Abreu earned the biggest victory of his career on Saturdaynight when he powered to the checkered flag at Thunderbowl Raceway for his first World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series victory.

Abreu took the lead from Terry McCarl on lap eight, and then had to hold off veterans McCarl and Joey Saldana to earn the victory.

Rookie Logan Schuchart followed up a strong run on Friday night by eventually finishing second after making a daring late pass to the outside of McCarl on the banked one-third mile dirt oval. McCarl, who set quick time and then became the first driver to benefit from the “0” being pulled in the dash draw, settled for third after coming back from a near wreck on a restart. Sammy Swindell finished a season-best fourth while two-time event winner in 2014, Brad Sweet, was fifth.

Abreu made the pass on McCarl for the lead on lap 8 in turn one in his Abreu Vineyards #24. Abreu then had to defend the position on a restart for the first time on lap 11 after Cody Darrah brought out a red with a wreck in turn one. (more…)

022214_DCN_LM_BronsonBARBERVILLE, FL – Feb. 22, 2014 – Kyle Bronson of Tampa, Fla., became the latest upset winner of a World of Outlaws Late Model Series event, capturing Saturday night’s 50-lap A-Main at Volusia Speedway Park for his first-ever victory behind the wheel of a Super Late Model.

A 23-year-old open-wheel Modified standout in the Sunshine State, Bronson joined Thursday-night victor Casey Roberts of Toccoa, Ga., as unexpected first-time WoO LMS winners during the 43rd DIRTcar Nationals Presented by Summit Racing Equipment. His $10,500 triumph in the finale of the mid-winter motorsports meet also was the second of the week for a home state driver following the win by Ivedent Lloyd Jr. of Ocala, Fla., in the DIRTcar Racing-sanctioned event on Feb. 17.

“This is unbelievable,” said Bronson, whose win came in the just the eighth Super Late Model start of his fledgling racing career. “I’ve never doubted myself, but I dang sure didn’t think I was gonna come here and win the race. If you would’ve asked me (about winning a WoO LMS event) a couple days ago, I would’ve told you that you were crazy. We had our goals set (for the DIRTcar Nationals) to try and make all of (the features).

“I don’t know what to say. I’m so excited I don’t even know how to show it right now.” (more…)

021814_DCN_MattSheppardBARBERVILLE, FLA. – February 22, 2014 – Big-Block Modified racer Matt Sheppard, of Waterloo, N.Y., took almost no time to grow accustomed to his new car. Sheppard started driving the Heinke-Baldwin Racing No. 9H earlier this week, and already he has claimed victory in Saturday’s finale for the DIRTcar Nationals presented by Summit Racing Equipment.

“To come down here and win the biggest race, come right out of the box, it means a lot to this team,” Sheppard said of Saturday’s 50-lap Super DIRTcar Big-Block Modified Series race at Volusia Speedway Park. “I can’t thank all the guys over here with HBR enough. They’ve been working their tails off all week on both cars and I think it showed tonight. We got the cars better every night. We’re going to be a force to be reckoned with this year.”

Sheppard started the race from fourth and his HBR teammate Jimmy Phelps, of Baldwinsville, N.Y., started on the pole. Phelps led at the green flag, but Frenchtown, N.J. driver Billy Pauch was quick to make his move from second.
