MartinJr-winner-9-14-13Tampa, FL – It was the return of the Eagle Jet Top Sprints as they were back in action for their make-up race on June 22nd as Mother Nature rained the entire night of events out. Also racing tonight were the Q Auto & Injury Attorneys Street Stocks, Gagel’s Open Wheel Modifieds, Outlaw Fours and the Motorstats.com 4 Cylinder Bombers.

First feature of the night was the Q Auto & Injury Attorneys Street Stocks. Winning their heats were Mike Wilson and David Barwick, II. When the green waved it was Burnside taking the early lead until Ronnie Whitley crashed hard on the front stretch nearly taking the rear end out of his car. Whitley was ok as he walked to the pits in disappointment. On the restart Burnside led the field to the green with Mike Wilson and Roberto Morfin, Sr. trailing right behind him. Wilson would take over the lead on the very next lap. Caution would come out on lap eight as Justan Rodgers spun in turn two after running in the third position. CLARKSVILLE, TN – William Thomas of Phenix City, AL drove the Alexander’s Industrial Service GRT to his fourth win in five races on Saturday night in the James Corlew Chevrolet 50 at Clarksville Speedway for the Chevrolet Performance Super Late Model Series.  Thomas led all 50 laps to pick up the $3,000 top prize.

Thomas left Clarksville Speedway with a 42-point lead in the championship standings over National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame Inductee Ronnie Johnson of Chattanooga, TN, who finished second in the Tommy Pope Construction Warrior.  Johnson could get close to Thomas at times in the race, but Thomas was able to keep “The Chattanooga Flash” behind him.

“We didn’t think the track would get as slick as it did, but it was still a good surface to race on and we just had to adjust our driving style for it,” Thomas said.  “I knew Ronnie Johnson was back there, so I knew I had to run hard, but at the same time, not overdrive the race track.  We still have a lot of racing left in this season, and if I do win this championship, I know Ronnie is going to make me earn it.” (more…)

Richards Gets Elbows Up To Reach Victory Lane For Second Time In Pevely Nationals At Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55

West Virginia Star Pads World of Outlaws Late Model Series Points Lead With Ninth Triumph Of 2013 Season

091413_PevelyVLPEVELY, MO – Sept. 14, 2013 – Josh Richards of Shinnston, W.Va., roared back into the World of Outlaws Late Model Series spotlight with an elbows-up victory in Saturday night’s 55-lap Pevely Nationals at Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55.

Twenty-four hours after absorbing a rare DNF, Richards wrestled the lead from Shannon Babb of Moweaqua, Ill., on lap 32 and turned back a late challenge from Darrell Lanigan of Union, Ky., to register his ninth WoO LMS triumph of 2013. The $10,650 score also made him the first driver to win twice in the seven World of Outlaws A-Mains contested since 2005 at the high-banked, one-third-mile oval.

Adding more importance to his checkered flag, Richards, 25, padded his points lead in the chase for the $100,000 WoO LMS championship to a season-high 114 points over Lanigan and Shane Clanton of Zebulon, Ga., who ended the night tied for second in the standings. Richards can clinch his third career title on the national tour by averaging an 11th-place finish over the final five events of the campaign.

“It feels good to have a little bit of a cushion,” Richards said of his healthy edge in the World of Outlaws standings. “We lost it last night (after a broken rearend left him with a 19th-place finish at Belle-Clair Speedway in Belleville, Ill.), so it feels good to come back with a win tonight.” (more…)

15-year-old Kyle Benjamin takes ARCA checkers at Salem

arca-logo-2010(SALEM, Ind.) – It’s been a big year for the number 15 in the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards.

Fifteen-year-old Kyle Benjamin won his second race of the season Saturday, winning the Kentuckiana Ford Dealers ARCA Fall Classic presented by Federated Car Care at the Salem Speedway Fueled by the Hoosier Lottery. Benjamin, fittingly, was driving the No. 15, which has now visited victory lane six times on the season for Venturini Motorsports.

Benjamin grabbed the lead from fellow teenager Kyle Weatherman on lap 192 of the 200 laps race and held on for the win in the No. 15 Renton Coil Springs-Cometic Chevrolet.

“I was hoping nothing broke and a caution wouldn’t come out,” the Easley, S.C. native said.

Weatherman, in the St. Charles Glass-United Nissan Dodge, finished second for the second consecutive race. He took the lead from Benjamin on the last caution when the No. 15 pitted for two tires. Weatherman stayed on the track.

“We got two tires and a few of the guys I was racing against stayed out,” Benjamin said. “It was a great call by my crew chief, Kevin Reed. Tires are so big here. Kyle was hard to pass for about five laps, but once the tires came to me, I knew I could get by him.” (more…)

Ian Madsen Earns First World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Win

091413_DeerCreekVL_webSPRING VALLEY, Minn. – Sept. 14, 2013 – Ian Madsen cruised to the first World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series victory of his career on Saturday night at Deer Creek Speedway’s Clash at the Creek.

The Australia native and brother of Kerry Madsen was chasing Craig Dollansky in the early going at the 3/8-mile banked oval when Dollansky’s car had a mechanical issue on lap 6 of the 35-lap main event. Ian Madsen surged into the lead as Dollansky pulled into the infield, then he had to hold off championship leader Daryn Pittman on two restarts in a light rain.

Both times Madsen pulled away from Pittman to finally earn his first series victory, and together with Kerry become only the fifth set of brothers to win World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series races. The Madsens join Bobby and Joey Allen, Dave and Dale Blaney, Kenny and Dean Jacobs, and Sammy and Jeff Swindell as brothers with World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car wins.

Pittman advanced from fifth to second in the Kasey Kahne Racing Great Clips GF1 to increase his lead in the overall championship standings to 70 points with eight A-mains remaining in the season. Paul McMahan was quickest in qualifying for the 16th time this season and finished right behind Pittman in third. Steve Kinser and Joey Saldana rounded out the top five. (more…)

The fast-rising 20-year-old star from New Berlin, Ill., continued his mastery of the unique one-fifth-mile bullring on Friday night, marching forward from the eighth starting spot to capture the World of Outlaws Late Model Series ‘Photobilly 50’ for the second consecutive year.

“We got our stuff really good here,” said Sheppard, who picked up a $10,050 check for winning a race run in memory of late Belle-Clair track photographer Charles Haffer Jr. “Actually tonight was the best we’ve had it out of all three times we’ve won here. Simpson is fastest in big Deery field at Yankee

IMCA Logo Small

FARLEY, Iowa (Sept. 13) – A driver who is no stranger to victory lane at Farley Speedway won his career first Deery Brothers Summer Series feature there Friday night.

Chad Simpson raced his way from his “B” feature to the $3,000 checkers in the IMCA Late Model main event. A season-best 54 cars were entered in the Yankee Dirt Track Classic show, the 14th of 17 tour events this season.

Tommy Elston started on the pole and led the first 18 of 40 laps. Denny Eckrich ran second most of that time before catching Elston and running in front the next three times around the half-mile dirt oval.

That’s when Simpson took over. After winning the second “B” and starting 14th in the big show, Simpson shot into the lead on lap 22, just before the first caution came out.

He was running comfortably in front with the final yellow waved with three to go and bunched the field back up.

Eckrich got the better of Elston in their battle for second but neither could make up any distance on Simpson. Ron Klein and Jason Rauen completed the top five; Klein’s fourth place finish was his Deery career best. (more…)
