Home State Sweep

Donny Schatz Wins for Eighth Time at River Cities Speedway

DonnyHomeBy Tony Veneziano (GRAND FORKS, N.D.) August 26, 2016 — Donny Schatz scored a pair of sweeps on Friday night with the World of Outlaws Craftsman® Sprint Car Series at River Cities Speedway in his home state of North Dakota. First, he completed a clean sweep of the night, setting fast time, winning a heat race, winning the dash and winning the 40-lap A-Feature. Second, he completed a sweep of both legs of the Gerdau Northern Tour at River Cities Speedway for 2016.

The win for Schatz was his fourth straight with the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series at the high-banked, action-packed bullring. In his career, the seven-time and defending Outlaws champion has now won eight times with the series at the track.

“This race team is incredible, it’s not me,” said Schatz of his success at River Cities Speedway. “The things they think of to make this race car better is amazing. I just have a habit of having a dumb way of driving it. I like it laying on the right rear like the late model. It really works, especially here. Sunday at Angell Park, I thought I had the best race car I had ever driven. That thing was awesome, but tonight, it was unbelievable. I think one of my eight-year-old nieces could have won that race in that race car. This race team is on their game. It’s what they do, day in and day out. I’m just the lucky guy that gets to drive it.” (more…)

Richards Leads the Charge to Win No. 14

Three Series Drivers Finish on the Podium

081216_WOOL_DelawareDELMAR, Del. – August 11, 2016 – Josh Richards pulled away from the field Thursday night, winning the Fulton Bank 50 at Delaware International Speedway by more than four seconds. The victory was Richards’ 14th, and with it he earns the $10,000 purse.

Richards’ wins total this season stands three shy of tying Darrell Lanigan for most wins in a single season (17). Not only that, Richards tied Lanigan for most series wins all-time with 72. The win was Richards’ second consecutive trip to victory lane.

“That’s wild,” said Richards about tying the record, receiving a standing ovation from the crowd. “It’s been an incredible season. We’ve had so much fun. You see guys get on these rolls. You just don’t want to mess it up. I’m so blessed to be able to do what I do.”

Kenny Pettyjohn and Amanda Whaley, two Delaware natives, led the 24-car field into the green flag of the 50-lap feature. Though Pettyjohn drew the No. 1 spot earlier in the night, Whaley overtook him within the first few laps; Pettyjohn fell out of the top five. She thereon built a two-second buffer from the field, and she was consistently quicker than the rest of the field by two-tenths of a second. (more…)

Bloomquist Banks Big in 30th Annual Ralph Latham Memorial

Bloomer Wins Ralph Latham MemorialUNION, KY (August 11, 2016) – Scott Bloomquist took over the lead on lap five and never looked back as he went on to win the 30th Annual Ralph Latham Memorial on Thursday night at Florence Speedway. The two-time Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series National Champion and current point leader earned $30,000 for his victory. It was his first Ralph Latham Memorial win since 2006.

In a close race for second at the finish, it was Don O’Neal in the Clint Bowyer Racing/Peak Antifreeze and Motor Oil, Club 29 taking the runner-up spot. He was just ahead of Dennis Erb Jr. in the Vomac Truck Sales/Black Diamond, Bobby Pierce in the Allgayer Inc./Bob Pierce Race Car, and Jared Landers in the Crop Production Services/Sweet-Bloomquist entry.

Bloomquist had to hold off a furious charge from O’Neal, Erb and Pierce at the end to get the job done. “I got the signal they were gaining on me towards the end. I didn’t want to get on top of that cushion. You can’t take a chance of messing up and getting into the fence. I stayed right in the middle even in the slick. I can’t say enough about Randy Sweet and all of my other sponsors,” said Bloomquist who maintains the points lead with his series-leading 10th win of the season. (more…)

Tim Kaeding Takes Knoxville Nationals by Storm on Night 2

Outlaw Jason Johnson Takes the Night in Points Standings

081116KnoxvillePostKaedingKNOXVILLE, Iowa – Aug. 11, 2016 – Night two of the 5-Hour Energy Knoxville Nationals presented by Casey’s General Stores was more than a race to the finish on the A-Main; it was a race in time to beat the impending storms. And Tim Kaeding nailed it. “King of California” Kaeding took to Victory Lane just before severe thunderstorms storms descended on Knoxville.

“I’ve got to give this one to B.C.,” said Kaeding, dedicating his win to Bryan Clauson. “Here’s another one towards your 200. I grew up racing with his Dad. Just a great family and a hell of a racecar driver.” It was an emotional night with Ricky Stenhouse Jr. leading the field under parade laps driving Bryan Clauson’s 17W.

Thursday’s 25-lap A-Main is Kaeding’s third career Knoxville Nationals preliminary feature. “It’s so unbelievable,” said Kaeding. “We’ve struggled so bad here at Knoxville the last few years, especially in this 3[K] car. We had a win taken away last year, because we had a muffler that was tampered with more than anything. You know, we’ve been fast. We just haven’t been as fast as we need to be, so for us to be able to come out tonight and win prelim night at Knoxville is a feat within itself.” (more…)

Rust wins thriller at 25th annual Harris Clash

Rust-VLWEBSTER CITY, Iowa (Aug. 9) – Joel Rust had the greatest seat for the best race in the house for most of 25 laps Tuesday night at Hamilton County Speedway.

Little did he know, a short time later it would lead the Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified driver to a victory lane celebration as the winner of the Harris Clash.

Rust, who started inside of row two, chased front row starters Chris Abelson and Kelly Shryock for all but three-quarters of a lap in the 25th annual event. Contact between the front-runners allowed Rust to escape to the first Harris Clash win of his career.

Abelson built an early lead while Shryock pursued multiple car-lengths behind him. Shryock closed to within a car-length by lap 10 and searched high and low to work past the leader.

While the former Clash winners engaged in a battle for the lead, Rust cut a half-straightaway deficit into just a couple car-lengths in the waning laps.

Contact between Abelson and Shryock forced Abelson into a spin in the middle of turns one and two just after the field had taken the white flag.

Shryock slowed after the contact while Rust slipped between them and emerged down the back stretch as the leader. He led the final half lap on his way to victory and a $2,000 payday. (more…)

TOMKINS_Weedsport(Mandee Pauch) WEEDSPORT, N.Y. – Aug. 9, 2016 – Just when everyone thought the race was over it was Gary Tomkins who made a last lap pass over Erick Rudolph to capture the Super DIRTcar Series Hall of Fame 100 at Weedsport Speedway and take home the $10,000 paycheck.

“That last restart the tires didn’t feel right so I went to the bottom, got my rhythm back and caught back up to Erick,” Tomkins said in victory lane. “I stuck it into one that one time and it stuck and I thought ‘oh boy here we go.’ I thought maybe if Erick gave me room on the front stretch we could do it and he did.”

Rudolph and Stewart Friesen brought the 30-car field to the initial green.

Rudolph held on strong to position No. 1 over Friesen as Friesen worked the outside lane to chase him down. (more…)
