Sponsor & Participant: University of Northwestern Ohio Plays Big Role In 40th DIRTcar Nationals At Volusia Speedway Park

UNOH’s UMP Modified Team Includes NASCAR’s Kenny Wallace, David Reutimann & Dillon Brothers, Students From Buckeye State School

BARBERVILLE, FL – Feb. 5, 2011 – The University of Northwestern Ohio is more than just the presenting sponsor of the 40th DIRTcar Nationals that runs from Feb. 8-19 at Volusia Speedway Park.

The Lima, Ohio-based institution is also a major participant in the mid-winter motorsports extravaganza held about a half-hour outside Daytona Beach.

Sponsorship of the DIRTcar Nationals goes hand-in-hand with competition for the university, which will have its distinctive UNOH logo on the bodywork of eight DIRTcar UMP Modifieds during the open-wheel division’s portion of the racing meet (Feb. 8-15). Highlighting the UNOH drivers’ roster will be nationally-known NASCAR racers Kenny Wallace and David Reutimann as well as up-and-coming brothers Austin and Ty Dillon, the grandsons of longtime team owner Richard Childress.

A private, not-for-profit school that offers the world’s only High Performance/Motorsports degree program, UNOH uses the DIRTcar Nationals to cap a unique extra-curricular activity that provides its budding mechanical minds true real-world training. Four years ago the university enhanced the motorsports program’s curriculum by launching a fully-sponsored, in-house UMP Modified team – basically, an after-school pursuit in which a select group of students builds and maintains UMP Modifieds and races them in the weekly events at nearby Limaland Motorsports Park, which is owned and operated by UNOH. The trip to Florida for the DIRTcar Nationals serves as the culmination of the 2010-2011 racing season for the UNOH motorsports team, which is housed in a shop on the university’s 189-acre campus.

UNOH’s UMP Modified team includes 36 students, all of whom receive scholarships in the same manner as basketball and football student-athletes at other schools. High Performance/Motorsports program students are selected for various positions on the team through annual try-outs; all the team members are transported to Volusia each February to end their year-long stints with a busy week of activity servicing the UMP Modifieds.

“The dirt-track program has been a phenomenal success for us,” said UNOH Vice President of Development Steve Farmer, who will accompany the school’s students to the Sunshine State. “A grassroots program like this gives us a great platform to recruit students and show them what the University of Northwestern Ohio has to offer.

“When (UNOH President) Dr. (Jeffrey A.) Jarvis started this motorsports program and began offering scholarships, a lot of people looked at it like, ‘Wow, is this gonna work?’ Well, we had 186 kids try out for 36 positions on this year’s team. It’s exciting to see the student body so interested in this.

“From a national standpoint, this program has given our school credibility that’s second to none,” he added. “It’s great for the university, it’s great for the students – and hopefully it’s fun for the fans to see a bunch of students working on and racing cars. We’re hoping the program keeps growing for years to come.”

UNOH’s army of wrench-twisters at Volusia will include Chris Puskas of Somerset, N.J., Andrew Strait of Traverse City, Mich., and Kody Weisner of Muskegon, Mich. – a trio that will not only work on the University-built UMP Modifieds, but drive them as well. Two more cars from the UNOH shop will be in Volusia’s pit area – one that’s scheduled to be driven on selected nights by NASCAR Sprint Cup Series standout David Reutimann, and a fifth machine that will serve as a team backup but might see some action with former Limaland Motorsports Park champion Terry Hull of Columbia City, Ind., behind the wheel. Reutimann – the son of DIRTcar Big-Block Modified legend Buzzie Reutimann and himself a regular on the upstate New York DIRTcar 358-Modified circuit for a brief period in the ‘90s – hopes to make at least a couple starts at Volusia in between his commitments with Michael Waltrip Racing at Daytona International Speedway.

Four additional UMP Modifieds will carry sponsorship from UNOH, led by the No. 36 that will be driven throughout the DIRTcar Nationals by popular NASCAR Nationwide Series regular and SPEED television commentator Kenny Wallace. A 2007 UMP Modified feature winner at Volusia, Wallace will sport backing from UNOH in all his dirt-track appearances this season and three of his Nationwide Series starts with RAB Motorsports, including the Nationwide event on Feb. 19 at Daytona.

The budding-star Dillon brothers – 20-year-old Austin, who drives the RCR No. 3 on the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, and 18-year-old Ty, who will chase the ARCA Racing Series title this season after breaking into Victory Lane on the venerable stock-car tour last year – will also sport UNOH sponsorship on their Team Dillon UMP Modifieds for the duration of the DIRTcar Nationals. Austin Dillon fell just 11 points short of the 2010 DIRTcar Nationals by UNOH championship in the UMP Modified class, finishing second to Dave Hess Jr. of Waterford, Pa.

Rounding out the UNOH assault on Volusia will be former Limaland champ Todd Sherman of Churubusco, Ind., who will enter his own No. 65 in the week’s action.

Accenting UNOH’s activity at Volusia, the school will have a healthy presence at Daytona International Speedway. UNOH will sponsor Wallace’s Nationwide Series effort (four UNOH High Performance Motorsports students will work alongside Wallace’s crew for the event) and the RCR Chevy that Ty Dillon will drive in the ARCA Slick Mist 200 on Feb. 12. In addition, 32 UNOH High Performance Motorsports student “interns” will be in the Daytona pit area assisting ARCA teams as part of a work arrangement with the series.

The UMP Modified action during the DIRTcar Nationals by UNOH features $1,000-to-win A-Mains on Feb. Feb. 8, 9, 10 and 11; a pair of $700-to-win preliminary events on Feb. 12 and 13 leading into the headline ‘Gator’ championship race paying $5,000 to win on Feb. 14; and a multiple-features-only finale on Feb. 15.

Throughout the DIRTcar Nationals, UNOH representatives will be available in the track’s midway area to promote the school’s Motorsports programs – a proven marketing tool for UNOH.

“The University draws students from all 50 states and 16 foreign countries, and in the last few years we have had an influx of students interested in our High Performance/Motorsports Programs from the state of Florida,” said UNOH President Dr. Jeffrey A. Jarvis. “By building and racing vehicles in Florida that will be driven and crewed by UNOH High Performance Motorsports students, the University hopes to continue to encourage both interested prospective students and local Florida high school instructors to check out everything that UNOH has to offer them.”

Founded in 1920, the University of Northwestern Ohio is comprised of the College of Business, College of Technologies and College of Distance Learning. UNOH offers over 60 programs in High Performance, Alternate Fuels, Diesel, Automotive, HVAC, Agricultural, Business, Marketing, Medical, Legal, Travel, IT Computer and Sport Marketing and Management with Associate degrees, Baccalaureate degrees and a Master’s Degree in Business Administration.

For more detailed information about the University of Northwestern Ohio, visit www.unoh.edu.

The DIRTcar Nationals by UNOH is a 12-night short-track blockbuster that also includes the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series (Feb. 11-13); the World of Outlaws Late Model Series (Feb. 17 and 19); the O’Reilly All-Star Sprint Car Series (Feb. 9-10); DIRTcar UMP Late Models (Feb. 14, 15, 16 and 18); and the Super DIRTcar Series for big-block Modifieds (Feb. 16-19).

MIKEY HAY THREE-PEATS IN EAST BAY MOD LITES

By Charlie Brown

Hay 3peats at East Bay Winternationals

Gibsonton, FL -February 4, 2011– Mikey Hay says that he is going to enjoy it as long as it lasts. On Friday night Hay took control of the 20 lap TUSA Mod Lite feature on lap one and led wire to wire for his third straight win in the Winternationals series at East Bay Raceway Park.

Brian Woodhall of Apollo, Pa. started on the pole by virtue of being the first heat winner with second heat winner, Mikey Hay on the outside. Woodhall had a great start but Hay pulled even and took the lead going down the back straight.

Iowa’s Josh May had captured the fourth heat and quickly worked into second with fifth heat winner Mark Marcucci out of western Pa. running in fourth and Delaware’s Brandon Dennis in fifth.

The first yellow flew on lap nine when Shane Pfeuffer got around. On the restart Marcucci got by Woodhall for third but the yellow was quickly out again when Jimmy Wills got around in turn one.

After two more laps under the green the yellow was out for a third time when third heat winner, C.J. Faison got out of shape and collected Ryan Charland and Woodhall. On each restart May would pressure Hay for the lead but once he got up to speed, Hay would open an advantage.

The field was tightened up for a final time on lap 16 when Jason Musser, Tim White and Pheuffer tangled. Hay showed no sign of weekness as he pulled away for his third consecutive win in the series. May had his best finish of the week in second with Marcucci third. Fourth went to Chris Steele and Kevin McKinney, who started in 20th, finished in fifth.

“Man oh man, I can’t ask for anything better,” said Hay. I don’t want to boast or anything but we are just making some minute changes and testing a little bit and we hit on something tonight again.”

Gibsonton, FL – Former National Champion, Mikey Hay of Somerset, Pa. made it two for two as he captured the 20 lap TUSA Winternationals openerThursday night at East Bay Raceway Park. Hay had served notice on Wednesday night when he won the special All Star race following a night of practice.

Mod Lite Winner Mikey Hay

Twenty-six cars took the green with Canada’s Chris Steele holding the lead. The yellow was quickly out as Brian Woodhall of Apollo, Pa. got around in traffic but was able to continue. Daytona Veterans Lay Out Race Expectations

Bobby Gerhart, 2010 ARCA Daytona Winner

TOLEDO, Ohio – February 3, 2011 – Between them, nine-time ARCA Racing Series champion Frank Kimmel and six-time Daytona winner Bobby Gerhart have made 42 ARCA starts at Daytona International Speedway. With the Lucas Oil Slick Mist 200 – the opener for the 59th season of ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards action – just over one week away, the two drivers and several other Daytona veterans gave their expert thoughts on the 2.5-mile superspeedway’s newly-paved surface and the way racing action will change.

Frank Kimmel, No. 44 Ansell/Menards Ford (19 starts, seven top-fives, 10 top-10s):

“Well, from the grandstands, I think it’s going to be a better race for the fans. You’ll be able to run two- and three-wide all the way around. As for the drivers, the track’s easier to drive; it’s got so much grip and it’s so smooth. You don’t have the issues you had with the track in the past so I think you’ll see bigger groups running together all the way around. It should make the drivers more confident and should be an exciting race.”

Bobby Gerhart, No. 5 Lucas Oil Chevrolet (23 starts, six wins, eight top-fives, 12 top-10s):

“If history repeats itself, and it usually does, I think we’ll see a very good race. I go back to Talladega. When Talladega was newly paved, it was the most passing we had seen there in a long time. The only glitch is that we’ve got the same basic aero package we had then but we’re two notches down on the restrictor plate now. So if I had any reservations for Daytona, it’s that I just don’t know based on the maneuverability of the cars based on the drag power, or the power we don’t have, I should say. When Talladega was paved, it was the most passing we’ve seen, but that was on a 29/32nd (of an inch)-stamped plate. Now we’re on a 27/32nd (of an inch)-laser cut plate. Each one of the moves has moved the power meter down. Every time you do that, it makes the cars a little harder to maneuver. You’ll have to calculate more in how to make a pass. It doesn’t mean you can’t pass, but you’re going to have to plan ahead more. The track itself – they did a beautiful job. Like I’ve always said, it’s going to be a privilege to race there.”

Steve Arpin, No. 25 Mike’s Hard Lemonade Toyota (two starts, one top-10):

“I think you’ll definitely see a better race. You’ll see a lot closer racing with bigger packs, much like you do at Talladega; but Daytona will have its own unique characteristics. The transition (at Daytona) off the banking is a lot more aggressive than it is at Talladega, so it’s a much faster transition at Daytona. I think Daytona’s going to be the best of both worlds – tighter, cleaner racing, and more aggressive. From the fan’s perspective, that means a tighter, better race all the way around – bigger groups, more bumper-to-bumper. And from the driver’s perspective, handling won’t be the issue it used to be on the old track, so the drivers are going to be a lot more comfortable in the cars. One thing’s for sure, being the first stock car race on the track, there’s going to be a lot of eyes on us, which will make it even more exciting. You take the bumps out, smooth like it is, and we’re all going to feel like Superman out there. It’s going to be so cool; I can’t wait.”

(Arpin competed at Daytona in the NASCAR Nationwide Series last season, finishing a career-high 10th).

Tim George Jr., No. 31 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet (two starts, one top-10):

“The new racing surface at Daytona has tons of grip and is great to drive on. I just finished the Rolex 24 weekend there, and the banking feels like it’s a lot smoother. I think this will yield closer and more exciting racing. I know my confidence is up after a great test with RCR in the ARCA Racing Series a few weeks ago. There’s a bump low between (Turns) 3 and 4, but other than that the surface is much smoother than the old track. I think the set-ups will be a lot more like Talladega – which I love. Just set the car to go fast since handling is less important now. Of course, everything will change in a big draft.

“Testing helps at a superspeedway like Daytona, but we did not draft at all at the ARCA open test. We are scrambling to get my backup car together and didn’t want to risk hurting the primary – especially since it’s so good! (Earnhardt Childress Racing) does a great job with their plate motor package and my guys have worked hard to get this car right. We are going back to Daytona to compete for the win.

“ARCA will be the first series to run in a large draft at Daytona on the new pavement. Hoosier builds us a great tire to run on. I’m excited to get back down to Daytona – most of my days in 2011 so far have been at Daytona. With Rolex and ARCA testing, then the Rolex 24, I’m feeling right at home there.”

(George competed in the Grand Touring segment of the Rolex 24 at Daytona last week and was part of a TRG Motorsports team that finished 13th in the class.)

Lane Construction, which also repaved the surface at Talladega Superspeedway, site of the second race on the ARCA calendar, used 50,000 tons of asphalt to repave more than 1.4 million square feet of the 2.5-mile Daytona oval over a period of six months.

The 80-lap, 200-mile Lucas Oil Slick Mist 200 airs live on SPEED at 4:30 p.m. Eastern on February 12, with live timing and scoring presented by ARCA Nation at ARCARacing.com. Bobby Gerhart (No. 5 Lucas Oil Chevrolet) is the defending and all-time leading winner at the track, with wins in 1999, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2010. Gerhart also won four consecutive poles between 2003 and 2006.

ACT Veteran Champions will be Challenged at New Smyrna Speedway

WATERBURY, Vt. — Veterans of the American Canadian Tour (ACT) will find plenty of eager young and veteran talent to challenge them at the inaugural Goodyear Speedweeks Cup event to be held at the New Smyrna Speedway during the upcoming World Series of Asphalt Stock Car racing this month.

Past American Canadian Tour Champions, Brian Hoar from Williston, VT, Karl Allard, Ste Felicien, QC, Donald Theetge, Quebec City, QC and Patrick Laperle from Ste-Denis sur Richeleau, west of Montreal, have all won multiple championships during their successful careers.

Hoar is a seven time and defending ACT Champion. He has been winning races at all levels of competition for nearly 20 years. After winning five ACT Late Model championships between 1993 and 2000, he moved over to the former NASCAR Busch East division. He became a top competitor, won Rookie of the Year  in 2001, a Busch East race at Thunder Road Speedbowl in ’03, and the yearly track championship at the New Hampshire International Speedway in 2006.

“The New Smyrna events are going to be great for our team. First we want to have some fun. We also want to try and get some momentum heading into the coming season. I think this will be the ultimate ‘neutral track’ for all our teams. I guess Joey (Polewarczyk), Patrick (Laperle) and Eric Chase are the only guys to have been there. I might have to follow Joey around for a few laps, but we are kind of tired of finishing behind him after his great run last September. Hopefully we can turn that around in a few days,” said Hoar. Did You Know? File: 40th DIRTcar Nationals by UNOH Feb. 8-19 At Volusia Speedway Park

DIRTcar Public Relations
704-254-7929 / kkovac@dirtcar.com

BARBERVILLE, FL – Feb. 3, 2011 – To set the stage for the 40th DIRTcar Nationals by UNOH at Volusia Speedway Park, consider these interesting ‘Did You Know?’ items about the mid-winter racing extravaganza that features the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series (Feb. 11-13), the World of Outlaws Late Model Series (Feb. 17 and 19), the O’Reilly All-Star Sprint Car Series (Feb. 9-10), DIRTcar UMP Late Models (Feb. 14, 15, 16 and 18), the Super DIRTcar Series for Big-Block Modifieds (Feb. 16-19) and UMP Modifieds (Feb. 8-15).

* It is estimated that the thousands of fans and competitors who invade the half-mile oval located 30 minutes outside Daytona Beach will have an economic impact of over $6 million on Volusia County and surrounding areas during the 12-day motorsports meet.

* Over a half-million dollars in purses is earmarked for distribution to race teams over the course of the DIRTcar Nationals by UNOH, including nearly $115,000 in first-place payoffs alone.

* According to weather.com, the average daily high temperature for Barberberville, Fla., in mid-February is 71 degrees.

* More than 240 drivers from over 25 states, several Canadian provinces and Australia are expected to participate in the racing activities.

* With two divisions competing each night, fans will see in the neighborhood of 500 laps of qualifying and feature race action per show. Over 12 nights of racing, it’s possible that the Volusia surface will showcase some 5,000-6,000 total circuits of action.

* Three dozen eagle-shaped trophies have been ordered for presentation to winners and champions during the DIRTcar Nationals by UNOH.

* On any given night of the DCN by UNOH, perhaps 500 or more people are camping on the expansive VSP grounds. That includes those in the more than 100 track-permitted campers and RVs situated in a designated area of the speedway’s parking lot and dozens of race teams who sleep in the haulers in the pit area.

* Upwards of 50 people are on staff each night of the DCN by UNOH, including race operations and technical officials, ticket sellers, gate workers and concession personnel. Most put in more than 10 hours of work per day.

* No one puts in more hard labor during the DCN by UNOH than the track-prep crew, which is led by Chad Alchier and Larry Fink. Alchier, who works fulltime at Lernerville Speedway in Sarver, Pa., and Fink, the son of veteran central New York promoter Harvey Fink, oversee a team that typically spends as many as 10 hours a day massaging and watering the Volusia clay, including an hour or two digging up the surface under the lights immediately after each evening’s action is complete.

* Over the course of the DCN by UNOH, Volusia Speedway Park officials estimate that the concession stands will go through at least 3,000 quarter-pound burgers, 2,000 hot dogs, 500 pounds of French fries, 500 cases of Coca-Cola soda products, 200 cases of Budweiser beer, 500 pots of coffee, 40 gallons of ketchup, 30 gallons of mustard, 4,000 packets of mayonnaise and 2,000 packets of relish. In addition, more than 50,000 napkins will be used by patrons.

* Three 30-yard-long dumpsters and two smaller dumpsters will be on-site to handle all the garbage produced during the 12 days of racing. The dumpsters will be emptied by a local disposal firm at least five times.

* The speedway’s electric bill for the month of February is roughly three to four times higher than a normal month – not surprising, of course, since keeping the lights burning for 12 straight nights of competition represents more than three months’ worth of racing programs compacted into a short span. As one VSP official says, “Clay Electric (the track’s power provider) loves us in February.”

* The track’s own food concessions are accented by a number of outside food preparers that set up stands offering a variety of edible items in the midway area behind the grandstand and in the pit area. The food vendors come from far-and-wide; for instance, the popular ‘Steak on a Stick’ trailer comes all the way from central Pennsylvania.

* T-shirt and collectible vendors from across the country – as far away as the Midwest and Northeast – converge on Volusia to sell their wares to fans throughout the DCN by UNOH.

* The overflow pit area for the week surrounds the ‘Gator Pond,’ which is located down the hill behind the track’s backstretch. And yes, there’s a three-foot-long gator that has been calling the pond home.

* Every grandstand ticket purchased for the DCN by UNOH also includes a FREE pit pass, allowing fans the opportunity to sign in and visit the competition area to see the drivers and cars close up.

* NASCAR personalities regularly drop by Volusia Speedway Park to take in DCN by UNOH action after their commitments at Daytona International Speedway are complete. Just some who have been seen in the pit area in recent years include Tony Stewart, Kasey Kahne, Clint Bowyer, David Reutimann, Bobby Labonte, Dave Blaney, Richard Childress, Ray Evernham and Bobby Dillner.

* Austin and Ty Dillon – the grandsons of famed NASCAR team owner Richard Childress – will both compete in the UMP Modified events during the DCN by UNOH. Austin, a 20-year-old who finished second in last year’s DCN by UNOH UMP Modified points standings, will also be behind the wheel of an Richard Childress Racing NASCAR Camping World Series Truck at Daytona during Speedweeks, while Ty, who turns 19 later this month, is slated for ARCA Racing Series competition at the big track.

* NASCAR Nationwide Series regular and popular SPEED television  commentator Kenny Wallace will spend his evenings from Feb. 8-15 racing his UMP Modified at Volusia. He captured a UMP Modified feature on the Volusia half-mile in 2007 – and he also won a NASCAR Nationwide Series (then Busch Series) event on March 24, 1991, when the track was paved.

* The World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series has been part of the DCN by UNOH since 2005 – but before that, the tour had been absent from Volusia since 1981.

* The World of Outlaws Late Model Series has been a featured full-fender attraction during the DCN by UNOH every year since 2004, the season that the World Racing Group re-launched the tour at Volusia after it had been idle for 15 years.

* Pit gates open at 1 p.m., grandstand gates are unlocked at 5 p.m. and racing is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. each day of the DCN by UNOH.
