Flagler County High School Seniors get to cross the Finish Line to get their diplomas

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Graduating high school might feel like crossing the finish line for every senior nationwide, but for matriculating seniors in Flagler County, crossing the finish line will literally mark the completion of their high school careers.

The Flagler County School District announced historic plans to celebrate its seniors, passing out diplomas as the students ride across the iconic black-and-white checkered finish line inside Daytona International Speedway May 31.

The traditional graduation ceremonies at the Ocean Center are not possible for Flagler-Palm Coast High School and Matanzas High School due to restrictions in place to fight the spread of COVID-19. So, the school district formed an ad-hoc Graduation Committee to come up with a solution.

The committee was comprised of students, school administrators, district staff and a school board member who met several times throughout April and discussed several possible scenarios. They wanted to keep graduation in late May so that the majority of their classmates would have the opportunity to participate before heading off to college, starting a career or enlisting in the military.

The students on the committee also said they were “virtualed out,” so any type of virtual ceremony was off the table. The graduating class has seen school closures due to three hurricanes and a global pandemic, so they envisioned a historic ceremony fitting to close out their high school years.

The school district said the France family, Daytona International Speedway and NASCAR made it possible for the World Center of Racing to host the graduation ceremonies. Matanzas High School’s ceremony is set for 11 a.m., and Flagler-Palm Coast High School’s ceremony is at 4 p.m.

Please understand that we are in phase 1 of the recovery of our state and country from the COVID-19 pandemic and we will be doing our due diligence to make sure that we do our part to keep the numbers flat lined and dropping. We will be doing our best to keep an open pit slab between each team. This includes an empty stall between teammates. We will also be monitoring that there is no more than 10 crew members per pit stall. And although we typically highly encourage comradery, there will be no team to team interactions throughout the day. Masks are NOT required, but we do highly encourage all teams and competitors to use them. We will let competitors and teams know in the following days, but there will be strict guidelines to drivers meeting and spotters meetings. Wheelman Series Officials will be monitoring all above mentioned situations and social distancing in general and reprimand can come if these guidelines are not strictly followed. We very much look forward to seeing everyone again and hope for a great turn out and great race, we just want to keep all of our racers, teams and fans safe and keep the numbers going down.

NASCAR is Back May 17th with 7 Races in 10 days

Have you missed NASCAR or racing in general well its back in a big way. 7 races in 10 days and 6 of them in Prime time.

Is there anything more thrilling than a race restart? How about an entire race season restart? NASCAR announced Thursday that it will do just that. On May 17, stock car racing will resume with the Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway.

As in many NASCAR races, what follows is going to be an intense and demanding championship run, as NASCAR intends to run seven races in the first 10 days of its revived schedule; three of those will be top-rung Cup Series races. For drivers who double-dip, May and June are shaping up to be challenging.

Public health concerns forced NASCAR to suspend its season early in March after only four events; 32 remained on the schedule. This initial blitz will allow the series to make up for lost time, hopefully enabling the organizers to preserve the full racing calendar, albeit with modifications.

Schedule below
