Two Hot Days Of Racing at Volusia Speedway

by BJ Cavin- VSP Media

BARBERVILLE, FL-  Things heated up over the weekend at Volusia Speedway Park as the first two day event of 2011 spanned both Saturday night and Sunday at the World’s Fastest Half Mile.  Five racing divisions hit the clay on Saturday night, and on Sunday race fans were treated to the Blackwater Inn Enduro race, plus two regular division feature events.

Jeff Mathews has been in firm control over the Quality Brands Budweiser Modifieds at Volusia as of late, but even “The Repo Man” is not immune to bad luck and unfortunate situations as Saturday night’s events demonstrated.  In just five quick seconds of racing Mathews’ fortunes went south in a complicated deal that began in turn one and ended at the end of the backstretch, and that sent three competitive race cars to the pits in pieces.

Mathews had grabbed the lead from Dale Murray on lap 5 and was attempting to race away from the field when Kent Corbin spun in turns one and two.  As the yellow was coming out for that incident Mathews had the unfortunate circumstance of his steering wheel detaching from the column, almost causing him to hit the turn 2 wall and leaving him struggling to reattach it. That left Mathews well off the pace and coasting down the middle of the backstretch as the rest of the field tried to split to get past, but in the jumble of cars darting up and down the track David Pollen and Dave Barber failed to see the disabled 33 in time.  Both hit Mathews almost simultaneously, with Pollen’s mod literally climbing over the top of Mathews before all three came to rest at the entrance to turn 3. The three drivers walked away, but Mathews’ and Pollen’s cars were all but destroyed in the dramatic mishap.

In yet another aspect of the mess on the backstretch, Larry Burkins had been running second to Mathews when all of the trouble started, but he failed to escape from the mayhem unscathed.  Burkins had a tire going down and slipped into the pits as the red flag was displayed, and thus was relegated to the rear of the field on the restart, which handed the lead to James Smith.  Smith took control and held off all challengers from there to seal a win, as Jared Allison got second place and Austin Sanders raced his way to third place.  Dalton Lanich and Scott Mooers rounded out the top five finishers.

After stepping up and notching his first Daytona Machine Shop Sportsman win last week, Blaise Hetznecker only got to take a couple of laps for points on the race track this weekend after engine woes left his 17H machine on jackstands in the pits.  But Paul Shead was ready to go, and he bolted to the front at the start with Steve Shead all over him in the second spot.  Kyle Chappell was also in the mix with the frontrunners early on, but the big mover was Aaron Barsness, who picked his way through traffic and eventually wrestled the lead away from Paul Shead late in the race as Shead slid up the track in turn 2.  Barsness held on to get the win leaving Paul Shead to settle for second place, and Kyle Chappell followed for third.  Steve Shead held off Mike Haney as they finished fourth and fifth.

Donnie Chappell has climbed to the top of the Daytona Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram Late Model division and Saturday night’s action proved that Chappell is not going to be easy to remove from the top spot.  Matt Hartley gave it everything that he had, even to the point of risking a crash in order to reel in Chappell, but it wasn’t enough as Chappell got another winner’s interview in the Destination Daytona Victory Lane.  Hartley was second, while David Clegg held firm and came home with a solid third place finish.  Lawton Minchew was fourth, and Kenny Monahan drove the 311 to fifth place.

A multi lap battle between Donnie Birdwell and Alan Peacock had the crowd cheering and on their feet as the Thunder Stocks took their turn on the big half mile.  Peacock rocketed to the lead early and was running a high line around the track when Birdwell grabbed his attention at the bottom near the inside wall.  As Peacock stated later, he thought that he was home free until Birdwell appeared, and from there it was a heated, yet clean side by side battle for the majority of the race.  The battle for the lead raged on as Tom Hughes, Pete Close, and Alan Lane, all mixed it up for third place along the way behind the frontrunners.  In the end Alan Peacock got the better of Donnie Birdwell and sealed the win while Birdwell placed second.  Tom Hughes bettered his competition for third place and Pete Close got his second fourth place finish of 2011 in two appearances at Volusia.  Alan Lane finished fifth.

Phil Brown is used to running with the leaders when the Daytona Sportswear Street Stocks race, and on Saturday night that is where he was, but actually in front instead of battling with the lead pack to get there.  But Brown was far from taking it easy in the leader’s role as Mick Kulak was still feeling confident after his win the previous weekend, and was right there to keep Brown looking over his shoulder.  Unfortunately for Kulak, Brown had the slightly faster car and won the race, thus getting his moment to shine in the Destination Daytona Victory Lane while Kulak went to the scales in second place.  Chris Lane had a fight of his own early in the race as he got past Robert Donaly , and while Donaly never eased off on the pressure he was unable to repass Lane, leaving Lane in third place and Donaly fourth.

Sunday afternoon’s races were headlined by the Blackwater Inn Enduro, which featured everything from Mini Stocks to Challengers when it began, but wound up with a modified racer overcoming some crazy obstacles thrown out by the Volusia Speedway staff in order to grab a win.  The race began from a standing start with Jared Allison in control behind the wheel of his enduro car, but on lap five officials stopped the field and reversed them on the track, forcing them to race clockwise and taking the advantage away from the racers with cars more powerful than the 4 cylinder bombers that were in the race.  And with the cars running backwards around the track, Reid Christensen got past Daniel Wolf and took control of the race.  If that were the end of it then Reid Christensen would have been the runaway victor, but race officials had one more crazy trick up their sleeves and stopped the racers on the front stretch with only one lap remaining.

Racers were informed that the last lap would be run in the correct direction on the track, but in reverse, which had all of them scrambling to figure out just how to accomplish backing up for a half mile when many of them had little visibility behind them.  And that lack of visibility bit Reid Cristensen as he got to the first turn, as he backed his car into the wall.  Christensen watched as Jared Allison went by him, then rolled down the track and into the pit area.  Allison continued on around the track to the checkered flags, as did Casey Feaster and RJ Glaser, and after the others had crossed the line Christensen backed out of the pits and completed his lap.  That gave the win to Jared Allison who collected the entire pot of money, but since Casey Feaster was five laps down at the finish and RJ Glaser was 9 laps down, Reid Christensen went home in second place with Feaster and Glaser taking third and fourth places.  RJ Arnone rounded out the top five finishers.

The All Quality Products Mini Stocks were in short supply on Sunday afternoon, but the three cars that managed to start the race ran 10 laps for points and for their payouts.  Despite chronic overheating problems that had him ducking into the pits to resupply his boiling race car with water, DJ Nobles managed to score a victory and celebrate with his crew in the Destination Daytona Victory Lane.  David Lebeau was the second place finisher and Wade Lear overcame earlier mechanical issues to start the Mini Stock feature and finish in third place.

The ongoing rivalry between Casey Feaster and RJ Glaser continued on Sunday afternoon as the Sparkle N Shine Car Wash Challengers ran for points and money, and despite starting at the front of the field on the pole, Glaser failed to keep the speedy 20 car behind him.  While Glaser used the middle and bottom of the track thus taking the shorter route around, Feaster went up to the wall and built momentum, passing Glaser on the second lap and keeping the 004 at bay throughout the race. So Casey Feaster grabbed yet another win as RJ Glaser settled for second, and Daniel Wolf raced hard for third place.  Brandon Haseleu struggled with the handling of his car as the racetrack was too wet at the bottom and too dry at the top for his liking, but he held on for the fourth spot while Lance Allison grabbed fifth place.

Saturday, May 28th, will provide a night off for the Budweiser Modifieds, but the Daytona Dodge Chrysler, Jeep Ram Late Models will be back on the track and will be running a special Elimination Race for the top ten in the points battle.  Late Model racers will take on each other in a process of elimination until only one is left standing as the sole survivor.  Fans will also see another visit from the always exciting Florida Mini Sprint Association, plus hot action from the Daytona Machine Shop Sportsman Division, the Daytona Sportswear Street Stocks, the Thunder Stocks, and the Sparkle N Shine Car Wash Challengers.  Complete details can be found at www.TheVoulsiaSpeedway.com.

Cody Allen captures the win in the 40 lap race at Punta Gorda Speedway

From Linda Jericka

With a threat of another rain out, just when the twenty two 4 cylinders pulled into the infield for qualifying for their big 40 lap event, PGS was spared while the wall of rain went around the track and the racing was started.

A big Thank You to the Charlotte County Royal Order of Ponce de Leon Conquistadors for being on hand with the ship that gave a ride to all the kids during the parade lap. (more…)

Tyler Ivey Captures NLMS Victory At North Florida Speedway

By Jeff Bean-NFS Media

Lake City FL -The “Tallahassee Terror” Tyler Ivey used an early race restart to overtake Brandon DeWitt and turned away several challenges to win Saturday nights National Late Model Series race at North Florida Speedway.Jason Davis sped to victory in Open Wheel Modified action. Andy Olson nabbed his first Pure Stock feature of the 2011 season while Street Stock point leader Marty Smith stood in victory lane for the third time this year. Daryl Larson scored his first career win in Box Stock action.

Twenty One Late Models lined up for their forty lap feature and fast qualifier Brandon Dewitt would set the pace for the first four laps when J.R. Moseley would bring out the first caution. As the green flag waved for the restart Travis Carter would spin in turn one setting up another restart attempt. The next start was good and Tyler Ivey would power past DeWitt for the lead on lap five. Lap eight would see the caution fly again as Larry Anderson spun around in turn two. Ivey would soon encounter lapped traffic on lap eighteen and at the halfway point Anderson spun again in front of the majority of the field to bring out the caution. As the field circled the track under caution Anderson and Clay Bedenbaugh made contact with each other a couple of times with Anderson being summonsed to the infield for the remainder of the race. As the field took the green for the restart the field got bottled up with Austin Kirkpatrick being the loser in the fray as he ended up on his roof at the end of the front straightaway. Fortunately Kirkpatrick was okay as he quickly exited his damaged machine on his own. After a delay the race would resume but Dewitt and Mark Whitener could not find a way to get around Ivey and the 2010 NLMS series champion would be the first to the checkers.

P.J. Wiggins would lead the Open Wheel Modifieds to green but with one lap in the books third place car David Crews Jr. would roll to a stop at the exit of turn four. Under caution Wiggins would have to go to the pit area to change a flat tire and this handed the lead over to Jason Davis. Wiggins would rejoin the field but bring out the caution on lap two. While Davis would survive multiple cautions Dave Wansley and Josh Sanford would stage an entertaining battle for second. As the laps wound down and Davis would enjoy a comfortable lead early race leader Wiggins would work his way back to the front of the field and join Sanford and Wansley in their battle for second and third. Davis would cruise home to the win with Sanford second and Wiggins third.

Nineteen cars would make up the field for the Pure Stock feature with Richard Reed and Andy Olson on the front row. Olson would move to the early lead with John Roberts and Jerry Fortner battling for position behind him. By lap seven 2010 Pure Stock Champ Shane Taylor would work his way up to second from his eighth starting spot and set his sights on the race leader. Olson would see his comfortable lead erased on lap ten as the caution would come out for a spin by Jim Langtry and Bernie Thrift. The field would get one lap in before Alan Bedenbaugh brought out the caution again. Olson would be able to hold off Taylor for the win with John Roberts rounding out the top three.

The Street Stock field would have Dan Gifford and Tim Harrell on the front row. Gifford would take the early lead and find himself being challenged by Kenny Hicks and Randy Barnhart. Barnhart would take over the top spot and lead until lap eleven when point leader Marty Smith would wrestle the lead from Barnhart after moving through the field from his tenth starting position. Lap twelve would see Smith going for a spin with help from Barnhart. Smith would be put back in his spot with Barnhart going to the tail for his involvement in the incident. From there Smith would hold off Randy Clark Jr. and Randy Moody for win number three of 2011.

Box Stocks would round out the nights racing action and Daryl Larson and point leader Bryar Zimmerman would bring the field to the green flag. Larson would move to the early lead with Zimmerman and Cory Crews giving chase. Lap two would be the first caution of the night as Crews made contact with Zimmerman in turn two. One lap later Billy Wilson and Crews would bring out another caution. Lap five would be the end of the night for Zimmerman as contact from Bobby Denard would see Zimmerman spin to the top of turn one and then get collected by Wilson. From there Larson would run to the checkered flag to collect his first victory in his rookie season. Cory Crews and Steven Wetherington would round out the top three.

Next Saturday May 21st, we will have Late Models along with Limited Mods, Sportsman,Pure Stock and Box Stock. Racing starts at 7:00 P.M. For more info visit us on the web at northfloridaspeedway.com or call 386-754-8800.

Martin Mauls East Bay Top Gun Run

May 21, 2011 –The Top Gun Sprints presented by boomtrux.com made their first visit of the 2011 racing season, bringing 23 cars for the 25-lap main.

Two-time series feature winner Danny Martin took the lead from the outside pole and set about to make the rest of the field give chase. Martin, who also holds the series point lead, was able to capitalize on his knowledge of the race track and mastery of lapped traffic to secure the win.

The race got off to a shaky start when polesitter Harley Zimmerman spun approaching the green flag. Somehow, the entire field managed to get by without contact and the cars were put back in order. On the start, Martin grabbed the lead, pursued by Zimmerman. On the second lap, Zimmerman got up in the marbles in turn one and climbed the wall, tearing down catch fencing. The driver was unhurt and the track repair crew took just 20 minutes to make the repairs. Martin picked up where he left off, trying to pull away from the challenge of Steve Darvalics. As the race neared the halfway mark, Tony Agin hit the wall in turn one and flipped, bringing out a second red. The race continued without major incident. Mark Ruel Jr. started pursuing Martin and closed in with less than five laps left. The field picked through traffic and Martin cruised to the top to take the victory. Ruel’s second place was his best series finish of the year after two fourths in earlier action. Darvalics claimed third, ahead of A. J. Maddox who had a steady run for fourth. Dan Jones was scored in fifth. Martin, Darvalics and Billy Boyd Jr. were heat winners.

Chris Pacetti claimed his first East Bay win by capturing the 15-lap Florida Mini Sprint Association feature. Pacetti slipped past leader John Craddock, only to have the caution flag nullify the pass. Pacetti waited for another opportunity and it came a few laps later. Craddock settled for second. Heat winner Steve Crabtree came from deep in the pack to claim third. Justin Kolves had a strong second. Eddie Moss Jr. spun while running second, went to the tail and used the high line to rally back to fifth. Morgan Blanchard claimed a heat win.

Jeff Rodgers made it four in a row in Street Stock action. Heat race winner Buck Woodhouse, returning to action after a three-week absence, made his run for Rodgers but came up one spot short. Curtis Book, Mike Wilson and David Barwick II completed the top five. Jim Baker, who saw a strong feature run ended by a flat tire, claimed a heat win.

Defending Outlaw 4 champion Matt Haynes returned to action and showed he hadn’t forgotten anything, picking up a convincing feature win. Haynes was trailed by Eric Knight, who recorded his best finish of the season. Nick Hebrank moved into the point lead with a third place run. Heat winner Greg Pae and J.R. Baker were the rest of the top five.

Troy “Socks” Dittebrand returned to score an official victory in the motorstats.com 4 Cylinder Bombers. Dittebrand snatched the lead away from Matthew Odell and made it count. Patrick Fiore kept Dittebrand in sight, closing in a few times over the last five laps. Matthew Odell crossed in third, ahead of Patrick Tabb and Michael Lacey. Heats were taken by Dittebrand, Fiore and Dalton Epps.

ASA sanctioned racing returns to East Bay Raceway Park on Saturday, May 28, 2011. The program will include the East Bay Sprints, Q Auto & Injury Attorney Limited Late Models, Street Stocks, Old Time Modifieds, motorstats.com 4 Cylinder Bombers and Dirt Daubers. For more information, go to www.eastbayracewaypark.com or call the track office.

In a night where a full moon should have been in order it was Jacksonville’s Dave Wansley scoring the win in a wild Open Wheel Modified feature event. Allen Brinkley captured a popular victory in Sportsman action. William Edward was declared the winner of the Street Stock feature after apperant winner John Windham was disqualified. Windham did go on to win his second straight in Box Stocks and Shane Taylor rounded out the nights racing action with his first victory of the 2011 season in Pure Stock.

The first feature of the night were the Sportsman with double points on the line. Sonny Thompson moved to the early lead from second place starting spot but by lap two Brinkley surged from the outside of row three to the lead. After a lap three caution for a spin by Spud Lockwood Jr. Brinkley would continue to fend off Thompson until motor isues would end the night for Thompson on lap eleven. Wayne O’Neal would inherit second and chase Brinkley to the finish. Kevin Davis would move around Jamie Dayhaw coming to the white flag for the third spot with Robby Stevens rounding out the top five.

Double points were also on the line for the Open Wheel Modifieds with Dave Barber and David Crews Jr. entering the night tied for first in the point standings. With both drivers capturing second place finishes in their respective heat races the stage was set for the feature. As the green was displayed for the feature polesitter Ronnie Chance drifted up the track working his way through turns one and two and opened the door for Barber to take the early lead. The first of many cautions would fly on lap two for a spin by James Edgley in turn two. On the restart Ronnie Chance would try and make a move to retake the lead from Barber in turn three that resulted in both cars spinning and Chance sent to the tail for his involvement in the caution. On the next restart Crews would take his shot at Barber but could not make the pass and settled back into second when the caution would reappear on lap three for a back stretch spin by Edgley. Lap seven would see Crews going for a solo spin to bring out another spin. One lap later John Gamble and Edgley would make contact at the end of the front stretch to bring out another caution. With failed attempts at getting the race restarted the Mods were brought into the infield for a cooling off period while the Street Stocks were called onto track to run their feature. When the Modifieds were brought back out to finish their feature they still had problems getting in a decent restart and race leader Barber was penalized two positions handing the lead to Paul Sizemore Jr. On lap nine patience and a well handling car would propel Wansley to the lead as he worked his way underneath Sizemore in turn two. With two laps to go David Crews and Ronnie Chance would make contact first on the backstretch and then in turn one with the result being both cars pointed in the wrong direction and tempers flaring. Chance exited his car to show his frustration with Crews and both cars were sent to the infield. Finally the race came down to the end with Dave Wansley picking up a popular win over Scott Kurtner and Josh Sanford.

The Street Stock feature started with John Windham taking the lead from the pole. As the race progressed Randy Moody would work his way to second and apply heavy pressure to Windham but Moody could not make the pass to take the lead. A late race bobble by Moody would allow William Edward and Heath Walker to move up and this would prove to be a key moment as Windham’s car would fail post race tech moving Edward to first and Walker to second with Moody being credited with third.

Point leader Bryar Zimmerman would grab the early lead in the Box stock main event but by lap four John Windham would move from his eighth starting spot to take the lead. Brian Scott would bring out the caution on lap five. On lap nine Scott and Amber Willis would tangle and Willis made contact with the front stretch guard rail. On the final lap Cory Crews and Daryl Larson would be involved in an incident that would see Crews placed at the rear of the field for his role in the tangle. Windham would go on to take the checkers over Kevin Underwood and Bryar Zimmerman.

In the night cap twenty Pure Stocks would take the green with Shane Taylor taking the early lead over Chris Shea and Joe Trowell. Frank Ziesmer would bring out the first caution on lap two as he was off the pace on the back stretch. While Taylor and Trowell would set the pace up front the action behind the top two was starting to heat up. On lap seven Nevin Gainey, Jerry Fortner and Andy Olson would battle three wide down the front stretch but as they ran out of room heading into turn one Fortner would spin bringing out the caution. When the green flag waved for the restart Taylor, Trowell and Gainey would stage a three car battle for the lead but on lap nine the caution would come out for Andy Olson. The closing laps would see Taylor fighting off Trowell and Gainey to take down the win.
