Citrus County has night of thrills and spills

From John Chance & Johnny Sanders

Mother nature finally kept the rains away from Citrus County Speedway this week, but the rain was replaced with triple digit temperatures just before the start of the race program. A near capacity crowd filled the friendliest track in the south for a night of fun and excitement. The evening started off with the 75 lap V8 Enduro race, it didn’t take long to see who were going to be the cars to beat. William Hindman (82) jumped out to an early lead, only to loose his left rear wheel less than 15 laps in. Kathy Ray (63) then took over the lead and started to drive away from the field. Back in the pack, Robert Ray (9), Mike Bresnahan (7), and Duane Campbell (27) were charging to the front. The first mandatory red flag came out on lap 25 to reverse the direction of the cars. On the restart Kathy Ray would lead the pack, with her husband Robert in 2nd, and Campbell in 3rd. Robert would take over the top spot on lap 29 and begin to start lapping cars at a furious pace to end the second 25 lap segment. At lap 50, there were only 3 cars left on the lead lap. The final 25 lap segment would be run through the “kidney bean” infield portion of the track. Robert would jump out to a quick lead over the now 2nd Campbell, but a quick spin by Campbell a few laps later would move Kathy Ray back to the 2nd position. Over the last 20 laps, this husband and wife duo would wage a close battle for the win. As the cars came to take the white flag, Kathy was taking measure of her husband, looking for a way around. On the final turn of the last lap, the door would finally open. Kathy would make an inside move coming to the finish line, but come up just a few feet short at the finish. Robert would go on to take the victory over Kathy, with Campbell bringing home 3rd after his late race spin.

Kane Dixon (15) would make it 2 in a row in the Inter-county Recycling Hornet division, dominating the field in their 15 lap feature. Jeremy Wall (1) would take the track owned rental car to a 2nd place finish followed by Jay Kock (31) in 3rd.

8 cars registered for the 10 lap flag pole race. This race would involve the cars making a 360 degree turn each lap, right in the middle of the backstretch, around a light pole in the infield. Tracy Webb (85) and Jay Seykora (96) put on a great bumper to bumper battle over the 1st 8 laps of the race. Coming to take the 2 lap to go signal, Thomas Peet (62) had made his way from the back of the field to challenge for the win. Seykora would lead as the cars made their way to the turn around point, Seykora would go wide, giving Webb and Peet room to move by and battle for the lead. On the last lap, Webb would suffer the same fate as Seykora, as his car would push wide of the turn around and give Peet a shot at the victory. Both cars would race side by side coming to the checkered flag with Peet narrowly taking the victory. This was perhaps one of the most entertaining races of the night, and fans can look forward to more in the future.

14 Pro figure 8’s took the green for their 35 lap feature with point leader Joey Catarelli (6) on the pole position. Catarelli would jump out to and early lead, but outside pole sitter Mason Love (01) would get by to take the top spot on lap 6. A lap 8 traffic jam in the intersection would make the leader lift off the gas for just a second, which allowed Catarelli to retake the lead. The top 2 were then joined by Wayne Calkins (14) to make it a 3 way battle for the win. Lap 23 saw one of the nights most exciting moments, as the 185 of Tim Wilson launched his car off of an infield dirt mound 15 feet in the air, after contact with another car. Wilson’s car would land on it’s wheels and continue running, very reminiscent of a scene from the Dukes of Hazard television show. Wilson’s car would end up with a stuck throttle pedal, and would retire quickly. Catarelli would go on to take the win followed by Love in 2nd, and Calkins in 3rd.

27 school buses were split into 2 20 lap figure 8 races to headline the nights events. Bus race #1 saw Josh Hamilton (3) jump out to an early lead. Dwane Fults (6) would take the most prolific bus in speedway history to the lead on lap 9, getting by Hamilton. Mike Hinde (142) had by far the best looking bus in the field, but it was also just as fast as good looking. Hinde would move by Hamilton for 2nd and bring Chad Markland (69) with him just past the half way mark in the race. Fults seemed to be headed to a commanding victory, but smoke from under his bus showed something was going wrong. Fults bus then overheated but continued to run all the way till the 2 lap to go signal, where his bus lost power and coasted to a stop in the infield. Hinde would take over the top spot coming to take the white flag and go on to take the victory over Markland in 2nd and Hamilton in 3rd.

Bus race #2 saw 12 buses take the green flag, with Mike Gamache (0) taking the early lead. Back in the field Richard Dinkins (2) and Joey Catarelli (98) had their sights set on the top spot. Gamache would lead all the way till the 2 lap to go signal, when Catarelli would find a way by in turn 1. As the leaders encountered the lapped bus of Chic Whitehead (11) in the intersection, contact with Whitehead, would send the new leader Catatrelli for a spin and into the turn 4 retention pond. Catarelli would manage to never stop moving, drive his bus through the pond, and rejoin the race in the 3rd position. In all of the intersection Mayhem, Danny Taylor (10) would take advantage of the confusion, and move in to the 2nd position. Gamache would then cruise to victory while Taylor held off the hard charging Catarelli for 2nd.

Tim Wilson (185)would repair his racer after going airborne in the Pro Figure 8, race to take the victory in the Boat and Trailer race. Following home Wilson in 2nd was flagpole race winner Thomas Peet (85), and Fred Henick (60) coming home in the 3rd position.

One of the highlights of the nights program were the annual kids bicycle races. Children were divided in to 3 age groups, and given the chance to take on the speedway with pedal power instead of horsepower. Several local businesses and track sponsors donated 10 bicycles and cash prizes for the top 3 in each race. After the races, children’s names were randomly drawn from a container, and 10 children were given a brand new bicycle. Winners of the bicycle races were: Jeremy Wall (3-6), Keshana Addison (7-12), and Austin Dinkins (13-17).

This week will be headlined by the Super Late Models back in action along with a 50 lap Modified Mini Stock race. Also on the race card will be the Street Stocks, Sheldon Palmes Insurance Mini Stocks, Inter-County Recycling Hornets, and the Pro Challenge Series. Gates open a 4pm and racing starts at 6pm sharp. For complete details please visit www.citruscountyspeedway.com or call the track office at 352-726-9339. See you at the races!

Grady Christian Takes The $2000 Payday At NFS

By Jeff Bean-NFS Media

Lake City FL – Grady Christian of Umatilla Fl. ended up being the big winner in Saturday nights Street Stock feature after apparent winner Dave Dowling’s winning car failed post race tech inspection. Kyle Chappell topped the $1000 to win Sportsman feature by holding off a hard charging David Tyrrell. Jerry Fortner collected a $1000 victory in Pure Stock action with a green to checker run. 2010 Open Wheel Modified champion Kyle Owen returned to capture a thrilling finish over Paul Sizemore Jr. Bobby Denard capped off the action Saturday night with his second trip to victory lane in Box Stocks on the 2011 season.

Sportsman would be the first division to take to the speedway for the extra money on the line and Kyle Chappell would take advantage of his pole position start to grab the early lead from Jody Turner. The first trip down the back straightaway had an incident that saw perennial threat Kevin Davis nose first up against the wall with damage that would end his bid before one lap was complete. When action resumed another top contender Ed Gainey would spin to the bottom of turn one but he was able to continue with little damage to his ride. David Tyrrell would move into second and Jamie Dayhaw would settle into third as Chappell enjoyed a comfortable margin at the front of the field. With two laps to go the race leader would encounter lapped traffic and make contact with a lapped car but would still maintain his lead. Behind Chappell the traffic would collect Jamie Dayhaw and the caution would appear. On the restart Tyrrell would get the break he needed and take the lead away from Chappell. But lady luck would still favor Chappell as another caution would wave before a lap could be completed and Tyrrel’s hard work would be negated. On the next restart Chappell would be able to keep his hold on the lead and be the first car to the checkered flag. Tyrrell would hold on for second and Eddie Gainey would complete the top three.

Paul Sizemore Jr. would hustle to the early lead in the Open Wheel Modified feature by getting by pole sitter Brandon Cameron. As Sizemore would pace the field with Cameron giving chase Kyle Owen would be making his way to the front of the field and prepare to make his bid for the lead. After getting by Cameron the 2010 Mod champ Owen would close up to Sizemore and these two would wage a thrilling battle for the lead. Owen would throw everything he had at Sizemore and on the last lap the pair would make the battle for the win a physical one. Contact on the back straight would have the crowd going wild but Owen was not done yet. As the pair worked through the final turn Owen would find the room and bite he needed to win the drag race to the finish and edge Sizemore out by a few feet to claim the win.

The Street Stock main event would have the veteran pair of Dave Dowling and Randy Moody on the front row and those two would battle for the lead but a slew of cautions would make it difficult for the field to get a rhythm going early on. Once things got settled in Dowling would have to fend off Moody several times before Moody lost the handle and spun in turn four collecting Nevin Gainey. With the laps winding down Dowling would now find himself being chased by some stout competition in the form of Grady Christian, Tim Powers and Tommy Hill. Christian would apply heavy pressure to the race leader at times being able to pull up along side of Dowling but couldn’t quite find his way around the leader. Dowling would go on to be the first car to the finish line but the car did not pass the post race technical inspection. With Christian moved up to the winners spot Tim Powers and Tommy Hill continued their strong runs with top three finishes. Unable to get his interview in what he said was his biggest win Grady would like to thank the people that made his winning effort possible. Independent Drilling Contractors, his engine builder and brother Bo and the entire Christian Brothers Racing Team. Grady said he also wanted to thank the fans for coming out and supporting the race.

The Pure Stocks would be next up with $1000 dollars awaiting the race winner. Current point leader Jerry Fortner started on the pole and wasted no time moving to the lead over Dave Kinsey. Fortner would find himself being chased by a strong group of drivers but he would manage to keep his grip on the top spot. Windal Clark would emerge from the pack and spend several laps looking for a way to get around Fortner but the race leader would turn back all of Clark’s challenges. As the laps were winding down Eddie Gainey would rally from the back of the pack to put himself in contention for the win. With time running out Gainey would move around Clark for second and make his challenge on Fortner’s race long lead. In the end Gainey’s rally from the tail of the field would would come up one spot short as Fortner would collect his second win of the 2011 season.

In the night cap Bobby Denard would race past Daryl Larson for a lead he wouldn’t relinquish. Larson would settle in to the second spot and would soon have his hands full with Kevin Underwood trying to take the second spot away. Once clear of Larson the goal for Underwood was to close the gap on Denard and he would soon pull himself into contention. As the pair battled for the lead with the laps running out Underwood launch his attack only to have his efforts derailed by a flat tire with one lap left. Denard would then hold off John Windham and Larson for his second win of 2011.

Feature events contested Friday night would have Shane Taylor taking yet another feature event win in the Limited Modifieds over Adam Higginbotham and Kyle Arvin. Friday nights Box Stock feature went to John Windham.

Next week August 8th the Late Models return along with Pure Stocks, Street Stocks, Limited Modifieds, Sportsman and Box Stocks. For more info visit www.northfloridaspeedway.com or call 386-754-8800

Three New Winners In Four Divisions At Bubba Raceway Park

By Jimmy Rouse- Bubba Raceway Park Media

With the RaceCar Engineering Late Models, Amsoil V-8 Thunderstocks, Mini Stocks, and Gladiators all running there was much to be gained and lost on the clay. Of course, racing and pitting wasn’t all that would go on out on the clay.

The Mini Stocks came in knowing that the conditions were right for a new winner as they had 2 weeks to work and rest. Lap 2 saw Shirlene Hammond, the previous race winner, take the lead from David Pope. However, 3 laps later, while attempting to lap the slower Kody Kinsey, Hammond and Kinsey made contact and the 2 went up to the wall, ending both drivers nights and repeat dreams. David Pope would be handed the lead 1/3 through. The restart gave “Hot Shot” Keith Briggs a chance to take the lead and he shot the 19T to the lead. The half-way point arrived and Sherman Pope and Dean Kinsey had a spin out of turn 4. The final 7 laps were green and “Hot Shot” put the Xtreme Racing 19T in Victory Lane. Brittany Yates took some points with 2nd, 2010 champion Nick Kerr took the final podium position, David Pope put the 81 in 4th, and Ray Folwell rounded out the top 5.

A $500 to win race was enough to put 28 Amsoil V-8 Thunderstocks on track and that led to some great racing. Jonathan Appleby passed Brian Shea for the lead on lap 1, but the 2 made contact on the next lap and Shea’s spin was deemed “avoidable contact” meaning Appleby was put to the back and Shea would hold the lead. Brian Shea and 2nd place Brian Mullins both jumped the restart once, and when they started the 3rd time it was Mullins in the lead. Lap 3 saw Vaughn Woodall stop in turn 2, ending his night and costing him some valuable points. Lap 4 saw Chad Scranton pass his team-mate for the lead that he wouldn’t let slip away from him. Lap 5 and the yellow was out again for debris while Jason Gamble took the 27 to pit lane. The lap 6 yellow came out for the stopped car of Brian Mullins due to a tire. Meanwhile Appleby was slashing through the field. Gamble lost his right rear in turn 4 on lap 10 meaning that the top 3 in points would finish outside the top 20. Scranton was out front holding off every threat from Luke Sadler and Brian Shea when the yellow came out on lap 18 for Tony Campbell and his lost tire. It was a battle of the “S” with Scranton taking his 4th win in 5 starts while Luke Sadler had to settle for runner-up. In the 3rd spot was Brian Shea who started up front this week-end, Ryan Lasik battled and kept the car clean for a 4th place run, and Jonathan Appleby did ‘Eat Good In The Neighborhood’ as he came from the back for 5th.

RaceCar Engineering Late Model excitement got under way on lap 4 when Andy Cobb and VP Pipken had a spin in turn 2. Lap 6 saw Cobb drop to the turn 1 apron and Jamie Slatton stopped in turn 3 bringing out the yellow flag. Jack Nosbisch took the lead from Kyle Van Sickle on lap 7 and started to pull away when Christian Augspurger stopped his 35 on the backstretch. During this period Mark Whitener and Kyle Van Sickle angered each other and on the restart it was Whitener washing up the frontstretch and Kyle Van Sickle ended up between a wall and a Late Model and as the cars bounced down it took Bo Allen and Donnie Chappell to the infield. Van Sickle and Chappell went straight to the pit area, but Whitener and Allen waited. A skirmish broke out in turn 1 and the word was that a Bo Allen crewman started the fight and the Big Frog Motorsports team of Whitener was involved as well. Both drivers were immediately disqualified for conduct, whether by driver or crew members. However, the best was yet to come and 3 laps after the restart it was “Iceman” Austin Kirkpatrick in the lead. Iceman had to hold Nosbisch off once more after John Koller’s stop in turn 1 on lap 15. Iceman was up to the task and held ’em off for the win with Jack Nosbisch the runner up. Ivedent Lloyd, Jr. took 3rd after some minor trouble with race control, JO Nobles ran a masterful race for 4th, and Dillon Wood ran 5th for some good points.

Sammy Dale took the lead from “British Bulldog” Stephen Frankland at the beginning and Dale never looked back. It was lap 10 and a debris caution was out. The very next lap saw Ken McCloud stop on the turn 4 apron bringing out another yellow. The restart saw Ray Hunter and Harold Lewis make contact and both were to the back. Lewis, however, exited the course. It was a sprint and Sammy Dale took the trophy home with Reid Christensen 2nd, “The Dominator” Steve Cox 3rd, Steve Johnson put the S&S 81 in 4th, and Casey “Insert Your Nickname” Feaster rounded out the top 5.

Next week-end is UMP Open-Wheel Modified action for $1500 and Double Points, Hobby Stocks, Mini Stocks, Gladiators, and Florida Mini Sprints Association racing. For more information you can check out www.bubbaracewaypark.com or call the Speedway hotline.

From John Chance & Johnny Sanders

Street Stock Feature Winner Jesse Veltman 55
