Punta Gorda Speedway Puts Another Great Night in the Books

It was a great night for racing at the Punta Gorda Speedway as they start the 2012 race season off early this year. This was the second race of the year that normally would start after the big Daytona race but speedway owner Kevin Williams decided to mix things up this year and start the season early. With so many visitors from up north, why not give them something to do on Saturday night when the weather is beautiful and then shut down during the summer for two months when it rains and the heat is unbearable at times. Williams also looks over the race card for the night and doesn’t mind changing things up to give the fans a great show and Saturday was one that had the fans on the edge of their seat the entire night. Punta Gorda Speedways opening night was “Super”

Photos by Robert Howell – Was it going to work, opening up in January, for the 2012 season with just a month or so off, is it going to be to cold, did the race teams have time to freshen up their cars. Speedway owner Kevin Williams took a chance this year and decided to open up the new season early and then is taking a chance of closing down for July and Aug when it is the hottest and rains a lot. Let the drivers take time off to be with their families and a break from the hot summer months and lets just see what happens.

It was opening night and the weather was beautiful and fans came out in mass quantity to see some of the best super late model drivers in the state compete for 100 laps and they did not go home disappointed. (more…)

Russell Wins Red-Eye 100!

RED EYE 100: Tim Russell got by Travis Cope to win the Red Eye 100 for the second time in his career at New Smyrna Speedway (FL). Cope took second with 23 laps to go and got the lead when Jeff Scofield spun from the top spot.

Travis Varnadore Wins Final Donnie Tanner Memorial Late Model Race

Dec. 17th, 2011 –It was the final night of the 2011 Season as two Championships were left to decide and the final Late Model event of the year going to the Donnie Tanner Memorial Series race #4 paying $3,000 to win.

The first feature of the night went to the Outlaw 4’s. Jesse Brown held an eighteen point lead over second place Nick Hebrank. Hebrank started on the pole with Brown starting in the ninth spot. When the green flag dropped, Billy Howard shot to the front after starting in the fourth spot. Howard was leading when the second caution came out on lap four for debris. But it was also bad news for Brown as he took his car to the pits and never returned, but still held the points lead. (more…)

Hammond Wins Reutimman Foundation 50 At East Bay Racway Park

Dec. 10th, 2011 –Four divisions were on hand tonight for the next to last night of the 2011 Season. Gagel’s Open Wheel Modifieds ran a 50 lap feature event for the David Reutimann Foundation.

David held his annual charity auction last night at the Silverado Country Club in Zephyrhills. One of the prizes to bid on was a ride along with David in the 2-seater Late Model. Eric Kovach was the lucky winner and got his ride during intermission. Eric was seen waving to the crowd almost each lap. One lucky fan also was awarded as tickets were sold and over $500 was raised for David’s Foundation. Troy “Sox” Dittebrand was the lucky winner. Dittebrand, the current point leader for the Motorstats.com 4 Cylinder Bombers division. (more…)

PGS Results for Final Night of Racing

It was to be the last night of racing for the 2011 race season and three class championships were still up for grabs. The pits opened early, practice was just about done, when the track was covered with dark clouds and rain. What a way to put a damper on the last night of racing, some fans started to pull in and after two hours the rains slowed. After checking the radar and seeing the rain should be done, speedway owner Kevin Williams says, it is what it is, dry the track, open the gates and lets go racing. The track was dry, the fans came out and it was time to see what happens when it is a full moon and the last night for points. (more…)

Jonathan Davenport Wins NeSmith World Championship At East Bay Raceway Park

Dec. 3rd, 2011 –Mark Whitener from Middleburg, FL set fast time at 15.758 on Friday night. Heat races were run on Friday night to determine the top 18 to be locked in the A Main for tonight. But before the 100 lap $10,000 to win, other classes were on hand.

Before the feature events two B-Mains were run and the top two from each of them went on to the A-Main. The first B-Main went to Chip Brindle picking up the win with Mark Banal finishing second. Both advanced to the A-Main. The second B-Main went to Tim McCreadie with the win and Jeff Smith finishing second. (more…)

Jesse Brown Wins Budweiser 20 Lap Outlaw 4 Feature Event At East Bay Racway Park

Dec. 2nd, 2011 – 53 cars were on hand tonight to try and qualify for the $10,000 to win, 100 lap feature event for Saturday night. After qualifying was done, Mark Whitener from Middleburg, FL set fast time at 15.758.

Six heat races were ran to determine the starting order for tomorrow’s feature.

Three Days of Racing that will be Remembered by Many

Sunday morning the pits opened at 10:00 and the Front gates opened at 11:00 with track Chaplin Richard Stone holding a church service.

It was great to hear that everyone was having fun and though some parties were held till wee hours of the night or morning, everyone behaved them self very well. It was time to get the last show of the weekend going and some were feeling a little more sluggish than others but it was time to go racing. (more…)
