TRENT STEPHENS FLIES TO FLAT ROCK VICTORY

Flat Rock, Michigan-August 11, 2012: Current Midwest Super Modified Association (MSA) point leader Trent Stephens sailed to a dominating win in Saturday’s 40 lap main event at Flat Rock Speedway. The race, the first Super Modified event at Flat Rock in over 30 years, saw 10 cars in the 10 second bracket in qualifying in an impressive display of speed and power. Heritage Newspapers served as the sponsor for the race card. Other feature winners were Rob Moore, Gary Cronenwett and Chris Metdepenningen.

The 15 MSA cars on hand used the practice sessions to get familiar with the fast ¼ mile paved oval, as only a few drivers had ever competed at “The Rock” in the past. Stephens got hooked up and put down a lap of 10:449 in the qualifying session. The 40 lap main saw Trent start in the 8th spot, and 3 quick yellows in the first 6 laps slowed the action. The final 34 laps were straight green flag, and Stephens and the MSA stars showed their muscle. (more…)

Lasker Picks up Feature Win, and Possibly a Wife

Gibsonton, FL (August 11, 2012) – Fans, drivers and teams were all anxious to get back to racing after a scheduled break in the action from the previous weekend. Open-Wheel action dominated the line-up which featured the Gagel Open-Wheel Modifieds, East Bay Sprints, the Florida Mini-Sprints and the always spectacular Motorstats.com 4-Cylinder Bombers.

First out for their 15 lap feature event were the Gagel Open-Wheel Modifieds. After a couple of early cautions, Bruce Harvey snatched the lead away from John Inman and pulled a 5 car length advantage over the field. The race looked like it was Harvey’s to win, but on the final turn on the last lap, Inman dove to the inside and went side-by-side with Harvey as they drag raced to the stripe. Inman was able to pick up the win with Harvey crossing the stripe in 2nd. Dale Kelley, Austin Sanders and Dave Pollen, Jr rounded out the top 5. The two heat races were won by Dave Pollen, Jr. and Bill Howard. (more…)

Schatz Wins Sixth Knoxville Nationals Title in Last Seven Years

Kinser, Swindell both fail to advance to the feature for the first time since 1975

KNOXVILLE, Iowa – Aug. 11, 2012 – Wow.

Simply put, the packed Knoxville Raceway grandstands were wowed before the 52nd annual Goodyear Knoxville Nationals feature hit the track on Saturday. Then, the near capacity crowd was on its feet at the checkered flag as Donny Schatz recorded his sixth Nationals victory in the last seven years after outlasting Brian Brown by 0.117 seconds to earn the $150,000 prize.

“There’s something about this place when we come here for the Nationals, it’s game on,” Schatz said. “It takes everything to be right. When you get on it and get it right, it’s something that you can keep bringing back here. That’s why we’ve been able to get this success because the baseline we have for coming here is an awesome baseline.”

History was made before the green flag waved as two of the sports’ biggest stars – Steve Kinser and Sammy Swindell – failed to advance to the feature. It was the first time since 1975 that neither driver earned a spot in the prestigious event. For Kinser, it snapped a Knoxville Nationals best 34-year streak in the main event. (more…)

The Toughest Task

By Jim Rouse, BRP Media – Ocala, FL (8-11-12) – This week the Scorpion Racing Products Modifieds joined the Buddy’s Home Furnishings Limited Late Models, Hobby Stocks, 1-800-ASK GARY Thunder Stocks, and the Rent-N-Roll Gladiators for an all-out tussle as they prepared for next week’s Florida State Thunder Stock Championship.

First up were the Buddy’s Home Furnishings Limited Late Models. David Showers, Jr. jumped to the lead from pole with his father (David Showers), JO Nobles, and Forrest Gough in tow. A few minor cautions happened early which kept the likes of Shane Koperda, Denica Hetznecker, and Caleb and Christian McGillivray in the mix. On lap 8 Scotty Williams, who had shot up from 6th to 3rd moments before, broke the 27 and brought a caution out. That yellow flag allowed anyone who wanted to get tear-offs do so without penalty- only “Rowdy” Denica Hetznecker would take the offer. On the restart it became clear that father would allow his boy to take the lead uncontested so as to put Showers Chassis in Coors Light Victory Lane. (more…)

My Second Visit to Showtime Speedway

by John Berti – Karnac.com Contributing Writer

Pinellas Park, FL -August 11, 2012- Went back for the second week in a row to mainly check out the Sprint Cars and Sportsman which were running as part of the racing card on this night. Joining these two classes were the Micro Sprints, Street Stocks and Mini Stocks.

Another very good crowd showed to be dazzled by the high speeds generated by the twenty Sprint Cars which showed up to do battle.

Promoter Robert Yoho’s creativity showed once again as rather than run the usual two lap single car at a time, boring method of time trialing,Yoho changed things up by running three groups of six to seven cars racing against each other for six laps maintaining times on each car in the process. This proved to meet with aroused enthusiasm from the fans. You just never know what Yoho will come up with to make a show better for the fans. (more…)

Henderson Savors New Friday Format at Goodyear Knoxville Nationals

The Sioux Falls, S.D., native wins the final qualifying night to lock into Saturday’s feature

KNOXVILLE, Iowa – Aug. 10, 2012 – Justin Henderson capitalized on a new format to the Friday portion of the 52nd annual Goodyear Knoxville Nationals.

With a new team and a unique opportunity to start from scratch, Henderson took advantage to lock himself into Saturday’s $150,000-to-win main event at the famed Knoxville Raceway after outlasting David Gravel in the final qualifying night.

“I was very worried coming into tonight,” Henderson said. “It puts a lot of extra pressure and stress on the guys that aren’t already locked in, but I have to say the finale came out good in our favor this time. I’m a fan of it now, but I think every year it’s going to change for sure.”

A total of 67 drivers competed with the new format, which erased everyone’s qualifying performance and locked in the top four finishers from Friday’s feature. For Henderson, who would have been mired in the middle of the B Main under the old format, Friday worked out perfectly. (more…)

Meyers One Step Closer after Night 2 Win at Knoxville Nationals

Stevie Smith and Outlaws points leader Craig Dollansky are Saturday’s front-row starters

KNOXVILLE, Iowa – Aug. 9, 2012 – Like a wrinkled grocery list after a day at the store, Jason Meyers scratched off his racing goals one by one over the last decade.  The two-time defending World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series champion had accomplished nearly everything and anything he set his sights on before hanging up his racing suit in the offseason, choosing to focus on his family rather than chasing sprint car races across the country.

Every goal was met and crossed off except one – a Goodyear Knoxville Nationals title.

“Out of all the goals we’ve set in sprint car racing, we’ve achieved them all except for winning the Knoxville Nationals,” he said.

Meyers is one step closer to that dream after he recorded an emphatic victory on Thursday on the second qualifying night of the 52nd annual Goodyear Knoxville Nationals at Knoxville Raceway. Driving for longtime family friend Tom Tarlton, Meyers led the final 18 laps in his return to the famed half mile. (more…)

Lanigan Continues Record-Setting Season With Hard-Fought Victory In Dirt Late Model Magazine 50 At Independence Motor Speedway

Sizzling Star Sets World of Outlaws Late Model Series Consecutive-Win Record, Ties Richards For Most Triumphs Since ‘04

INDEPENDENCE, IA – Aug. 6, 2012 – Darrell Lanigan’s assault on the World of Outlaws Late Model Series rolled on Monday night at Independence Motor Speedway.

Continuing the most amazing season in the history of the national tour, the 42-year-old star from Union, Ky., set or matched three different series records with a hard-fought victory over Clint Smith of Senoia, Ga., in the three-eighths-mile oval’s Dirt Late Model Magazine 50.

Lanigan drew the pole position in the pre-race redraw and led all but one circuit of the A-Main, but his drive to the checkered flag behind the wheel of his Cornett-powered Rocket was anything but easy. He had to survive a relentless late-race challenge from Smith, who nosed ahead to lead lap 42 but lost ground and fell behind for the remainder of the distance when the leaders rubbed together in turn two moments after Lanigan was scored the leader of lap 43.
