Series Newcomer Trevor Noles Best Field in CCS Super Limited Action at Hickory

Graham, NC 9/24/12– Trevor Noles of Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina picked up his first career CCS Super Limited win in just his second start Saturday night at the Hickory Motor Speedway in front of a healthy crowd in the grandstands and an even healthier field of racecars. Noles had to hold on to the lead on a lap forty-seven restart that set up several hardnosed battles in the sprint to the checkered flag just three laps later.

In victory lane Noles explained how he couldn’t believe he and his Coulter Motorsports race team were already in victory lane in the toughest field of cars the series has seen thus far in 2012.

“This is just amazing to be in the winner’s circle in just our second start with CCS. I was worried at the end when we kept having those cautions allowing the guys behind me to close the lead I had built up, but Randy Renfrow gave us a fast car and we just pulled away from everyone at the end,” said an excited Noles. “I started a little deeper in the field than I would have liked, and then it took us a while to get going with all those cautions. Once we finally got going and got around that #5 car I was able to open a lead and hold on for the win.” (more…)

Team GDT Baltimore Race Report

BALTIMORE, Sept. 3 — Rounds 13 and 14 of the 2012 Star Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear on Saturday and Sunday were challenging for a number of reasons, and Team GDT left the Grand Prix of Baltimore presented by SRT with mixed results.

Ryan Tveter of Oyster Bay, N.Y. posted the best finish for the Dallas-based team this weekend when he turned an 18th-place starting spot into a tenth-place finish in Saturday’s race on the temporary street course at Baltimore’s Inner Harbor.

Both Tveter and his teammate, Andres Méndez, also had 12th-place finishes here, as Méndez finished 12th on Saturday and Tveter placed 12th on Sunday.

Méndez, of Bogotá, Colombia, only completed one lap of Sunday’s race bcfore he was hit in the rear by another competitor in the chicane and was launched into the wall. He ended up 18th in the final rundown for that race.

The whole weekend was complicated. (more…)

Guss Races to Record Third Straight National IMCA Late Model Crown

VINTON, Iowa (Aug. 30) – Ray Guss Jr. raced his way into IMCA the record book by the narrowest of margins.

Guss bested Todd Cooney by a single point, 810-809, in becoming the first driver in the modern era of the division to win three consecutive national IMCA Late Model championships.

The title difference was made in track championship bonus points, after both drivers finished the regular season with 794 points. Guss got 16 bonus points for winning the Quad City Speedway crown while Cooney got 15 bonus points for his Shelby County Speedway title.

Bonus points are determined by average car counts at each track; bonuses are given for a maximum of one Late Model track championship and the highest average is used when drivers win more than one local track crown.  (more…)

Dollansky Finishes Second to Maintain World of Outlaws Championship Points Lead

ELMA, Wash. – Aug. 29, 2012 – Things are getting back to normal for Sammy Swindell.

He found himself in Victory Lane for the second consecutive World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series event and the third time in the last five races on Wednesday night at the scenic Grays Harbor Raceway, which hosted its first Outlaws race since 2008.

It was his series-leading 11th victory of the season and moved him to a tie for second place in the championship standings – only 39 points behind leader Craig Dollansky.

“This is the best we’ve got so hopefully it just carries on through the rest of the year,” said Swindell, who hadn’t won at Grays Harbor Raceway since 1997.

“We did have maybe six, eight weeks there where we weren’t where we needed to be and was struggling some. We found out the reason for that and rectified that, fixed all that stuff and we’re back to where we were at the first part of the year.” (more…)

Buescher Keeps Points Lead with Madison Win, His Fourth of 2012

(MADISON, Wis.) – ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards points leader Chris Buescher withstood a series of challenges from Frank Kimmel and Alex Bowman – and eight extra laps of racing – to take a series-leading fourth win in 2012 at Madison International Speedway.

Buescher (No. 17 Roulo Brothers Racing Ford) led 110 of 208 laps, including the final 34, to win the Herr’s Live Life with Flavor 200 and become the 40th driver in ARCA history with nine or more wins. He had to come back from 13th place early in the race after contact on Lap 31 sent him spinning out of the top five. He had started seventh.

The 19-year-old extended his points lead over Kimmel from 15 to 60. Kimmel took the lead from Buescher on Lap 173 but slipped up two laps later to give back the advantage. From there, Buescher survived challenges on three restarts and won by 0.7 second over Bowman, a reversal of the top two positions from the 2011 race at the half-mile oval. (more…)

Paducah, KY (August 24, 2012) – Jason Feger of Bloomington, IL led all fifty laps enroute to a $5,000 payday and title of USA World 50 at famed Paducah International Raceway Friday night.

Feger enjoyed a half straight away lead for much of the race over second running Terry Phillips of Springfield, MO.  Phillips, was able to close on Feger in lapped traffic, but Feger’s car was dialed in perfectly and he would not be denied.

Swindell Captures Castrol Raceway’s Sixth annual Oil City Cup

Hafertepe Jr. unhappy with late-race pass that nets Swindell his 10th Outlaws win

EDMONTON, Alberta – Aug. 25, 2012 – Sam Hafertepe Jr. won’t be inviting Sammy Swindell over for a barbecue any time soon.

The duo nearly touched racing for the lead with two laps remaining on a brisk Saturday evening at Castrol Raceway, where Swindell edged Hafertepe Jr. to claim Night 2 of the Sixth annual Oil City Cup and his 10th World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series feature win of the season.

“I definitely had the better car,” Hafertepe Jr said. “He had to pretty much drive through us to pass us. That’s part of it sometimes. We’ll do the same thing when the option comes around (to) my turn.”

Hafertepe Jr., who seized the lead from World of Outlaws championship points leader Craig Dollansky in thick traffic on lap six, had the dominant car until a caution with four laps remaining. It erased a half a straightaway lead and gave Swindell a renewed shot at the victory.

While Hafertepe Jr.’s car became tight running the cushion, Swindell powered around the bottom within striking distance for two laps after the restart. Then, opportunity arose as Hafertepe Jr. had a slight bobble in turn two. (more…)
