BRUNSWICK, GA – Ray Cook of Brasstown, NC took the lead with five laps to go and drove the Tri-County Race Track Special to victory in the 2014 NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series season opener on Friday afternoon in the Super Bowl of Racing Presented By Rock Auto.com at Golden Isles Speedway.

Cook started ninth and moved up to the second spot by lap eight.  When early race leader Walker Arthur of Forest, VA began to encounter lapped traffic with ten laps to go, Cook closed in and made up a half straightaway deficit.  Arthur pushed up the banking in turn one on lap 26, and Cook dove underneath to take the lead.

“I couldn’t catch Arthur until he got into that lapped traffic because until then, it seemed like we were running the same speed,” Cook said.  “He tried to lap a car on the outside and the lapped car moved up in front of him.  That opened the door for me to take the lead.” (more…)

Davenport Dominates Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series Opener at Golden Isles

Davenport - Golden IsleWAYNESVILLE, GA (February 7, 2014) – Former Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series Rookie of the Year Jonathan Davenport of Mt. Airy, NC dominated the season-opener Friday afternoon at Golden Isles Speedway. Davenport set a new track record in time trials, won his heat, and led all 25-laps of the first main event for the Georgia Boot Super Bowl of Racing. The win marked his third career Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series victory. Davenport’s other LOLMDS victories were in the state of Virginia at Winchester Speedway and Virginia Motor Speedway both during the 2010 season.

“I can’t thank Kevin [Rumley], Leroy [Rumley], and Longhorn Chassis enough. This deal just came together at the end of last year, I have driven for them before but to come together so quick with this car, it says a lot about this team.”

Davenport was unchallenged for a majority of the $5000 to win event, which was the first LOLMDS race at Golden Isles Speedway since 2008. Last year’s series rookie of the year, Billy Moyer Jr. ran second for the first 11 laps until yielding to Brandon Sheppard. Moyer then lost another spot a few circuits later to Earl Pearson Jr., who took over the third spot. (more…)

JACKIE NOSBISCH, JR WINS HIS FIRST CRATE LATE MODEL FEATURE IN 9 YEARS OF EAST BAY RACEWAY WINTERNATIONALS COMPETITION

J-Nosbisch-Winner-2-6-14TAMPA, FL – Jackie Nosbisch, Jr. now has six top 10 finishes in the Crate Late Model portion of East Bay Raceway’s Winternationals, but he never had a win beforeThursday night nor won $2,000 in such a convincing style.

His new Rocket launched ahead of the 22 car field at the half-way mark of the 30 lap feature and finished one-half  a lap ahead of the rest of the competition for an 8.79 second margin of victory over Shan Smith, Josh Peacock, David Pollen, Jr. and Keith Nosbisch.

“The car was working flawlessly,”  said the soft-spoken winner.  “We changed stuff around to run the outside because I figured everyone would be on the bottom and right about lap 16, three of us were battling for the lead.  Peacock, who had led the first 13 laps until I passed him on the outside on lap 14, and Keith Nosbisch got in the mix also before I decided ‘outside’ was the only way to go.”

“It’s nice to start the season with a win!  I’d like to thank my sponsors Buddy’s Home Furnishings, Deland Truck Center, Adam’s Used Auto Parts of Tampa and the UPS Store in Riverview.” (more…)

DALE MATHISON AND KYLE STRICKLER WERE FIRST TIME WINNERS IN THE OPEN WHEEL MODIFIED DOUBLE-HEADER AT EAST BAY WINTERNATIONALS

2014-02-04TAMPA, FL……2/4/14….Dale Mathison of Clearwater MN won a hard fought battle in the make-up feature Tuesday night, while Kyle Strickler of Mooresville NC won the finale in the Open Wheel Modified portion of the opening segment of East Bay Raceway Park’s 38th version of the Winternationals.
Both drivers, as well as the first night winner, Kyle Bronson,  were first-time winners in the Winternationals which attracted Open Wheel drivers from a total of 15 states and took seven days to complete because of rain the first four days and saturated track conditions.  But, cooperation between the drivers, sanctioning body UMP and a never-quit effort by track officials, the three days of racing happened.
Mathison started on pole of the 31 car first feature and led the first 19 laps despite the field being bunched up for seven different caution flags in the 25-lap event, worth $1,000-to-win.  However, the last six laps were a back and forth battle with sixth starting Devin Gilpin who led laps 20, 22 and 23 before Mathison regained the lead for good on the white flag lap and had a margin of victory of .685 seconds at Ronnie Luckock’s checkered flag.
“Everyone was giving me signs to stay on the bottom of the track, but I had to pick it up a bit when Gilpin passed me,” said the winner in his Mars Brothers custom-built chassis powered by an engine built by Tim’s automotive.  Gilpin held on for 2nd ahead of Matt Cooper, Travis Varnadore and Jason Gross in the top five.  Rounding out the top 10 it was Devin Dixon, Kyle Strickler, Buzzy Reutimann, Kevin Adams and Kenny Wallace.  Heats  went to Troy Girolamo, Mathison, Kyle Bronson and Strickler. Desoto Speedway
BRADENTON – Usually, starting from 14th place in a 100-lap feature race on a 3/8-mile oval  makes winning an extremely difficult task.
But for Riverview’s Joe Boyd, that didn’t slow him down as he picked his way through the field on his way to win Saturday night’s crash-filled Icebreaker 100 for the Bright House Challenge Series in front a capacity crowd at Desoto Speedway. (more…)

Travis Cope is joined in Victory Lane by Bobby Orr – son of the late Pete Orr – and his family after winning Saturday night’s Pete Orr Memorial 100 at New Smyrna (Fla.) Speedway. Speed51.com

By Jason Christley, NASCAR – New Smyrna, Fla. — Travis Cope insists he doesn’t have New Smyrna Speedway figured out.

The results indicate otherwise.

Cope led the final 92 laps in a dominating performance Saturday night en route to winning the 12th Annual Pete Orr Memorial/Orange Blossom 100. It’s his third straight NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Super Late Model win at the banked half-mile.

With the win, the 25-year from Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., adds his name to recent winners — and rising stars in the sport — of the Pete Orr 100: Kyle Larson (2012) and Kyle Benjamin (2013).

“That means a lot,” Cope said. “Those two kids, I’ve raced both of them. They’re outstanding race car drivers. It means a lot – it’s pretty cool to have your name on the same trophy as them.”

Rich Clouser finished second, followed by Mike Garvey. Brad May and Mario Comparetto Jr. rounded out the top five. (more…)

William Thomas Wins Ice Bowl Thriller At Talladega Short Track

EASTABOGA, AL—The 2014 version of the Ice Bowl at the Talladega Short Track was not over till it was over as William Thomas of Phenix City, AL., moved under race leader Eric Cooley of Fulton, MS., coming to the checkered flag to grab the win and collect $6,000 for his 50 lap run Sunday afternoon

Eric Cooley started on the pole by virtue of his heat race win and then proceeded to put on driving clinic as he and Thomas worked through lapped traffic for the first half of the race, as the stretched out their lead over the third place of Lavon Sparks, fourth place Ross Martin and fifth place Todd Morrow. Cooley then ran into the stronger lap traffic just past the halfway point as he tried for several laps to get around the car of Tim Roszell. Cooley was trying to make his move around Roszell when the two made contact and forced Cooley to spin. Cooley was placed back into the top spot by track officials for the leader being taken out by a lapped car.

Cooley then had to hold off Thomas for the final quarter of the race as Thomas keep showing him his nose lap after lap for the final portion of the race and then he made his move as Cooley slipped coming off turn four and Thomas took advantage of the slip and powered by Cooley to take the win. Cooley came home in the second spot, although disappointed at the outcome of the main event, the Mississippi driver has strong Ice Bowl weekend as set overall fast time for the 50 Super Late Models on hand and was a pretty dominate car all weekend.  (more…)

Florida State Dirt Championship Races A Success at Bubba Raceway Park

The Florida State Championships were a hit for the Late Models, Scorpion UMP Modifieds, Limited Late Models, Mini Sprints, Hobby Stocks, 1-800-ASK GARY Thunder Stocks, TQ Late Models, and Rent-N-Roll Gladiators as all eight winners would take home some cash and a beautiful championship ring.
Limited Late Models kicked the night off with Forrest Gough leading the pack as many others struggled in the opening laps. Cecil Eunice would grab the lead from Gough on lap eight as they opened up a half lap over the field. A caution with eight to go would give 2013 division champion Tyler Clem a shot at Eunice and Gough but he wouldn’t make the most of it. 22 99 14 77 61
The Mini Sprints started with Robbie Smith toppling his #77 in turn two. Smith would continue on after the yellow with Jim Young, Connor Borah, and Austin Craddock leading the way. A toople by Robby Hoffman would halt the field on lap four and leave Young to hold off Eddie Moss, Jr. and David Hall. On lap 17, Connor Borah would make contact with traffic and go for a wild tumble in turn four as Jim Young was closing in on lapping him. Borah would climb out of the wreckage under his own power. Young would take a dominant win over Eddie Moss, Jr., David Hall, Austin Craddock, and Kenny Brewer. (more…)
