Late pass sends Aguilar to TBARA win

On a night when the Safety-Kleen TBARA Sprint Car series was honoring one of their pioneering drivers, Joey Aguilar made sure that he was honoring his mentor in a proper way with a pass coming to the white flag that allowed him to take his second consecutive win to open the season.
Aguilar – whose last visit to the speedway ended with a helicopter ride to a local hospital after he received burns from an oil line fire – started ninth in the inaugural Larry Brazil Memorial 30-lap event. As polesitter Tommy Nichols paced the field for the first 15 laps of the race, Aguilar, Shane Bulter and Ben Fritz were making quick work of the rest of the field on their way to the front of the field. Fritz, who started sixth, was already up to second by the end of lap one.
Butler made his way past Fritz for second at the end of lap 10 and quickly ran Nichols down to battle for the lead. Butler used a diamond manuver where he went high in the middle of turns three and four and shot to the bottom of the race track coming off the corner. Butler won a drag race with Nichols into the first turn. (more…)

Abreu Claims First World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series Victory

Californian cruised into victory lane at Thunderbowl Raceway

031514_RICO_WINSTULARE, Calif. – March 15, 2014 – Rico Abreu earned the biggest victory of his career on Saturdaynight when he powered to the checkered flag at Thunderbowl Raceway for his first World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series victory.

Abreu took the lead from Terry McCarl on lap eight, and then had to hold off veterans McCarl and Joey Saldana to earn the victory.

Rookie Logan Schuchart followed up a strong run on Friday night by eventually finishing second after making a daring late pass to the outside of McCarl on the banked one-third mile dirt oval. McCarl, who set quick time and then became the first driver to benefit from the “0” being pulled in the dash draw, settled for third after coming back from a near wreck on a restart. Sammy Swindell finished a season-best fourth while two-time event winner in 2014, Brad Sweet, was fifth.

Abreu made the pass on McCarl for the lead on lap 8 in turn one in his Abreu Vineyards #24. Abreu then had to defend the position on a restart for the first time on lap 11 after Cody Darrah brought out a red with a wreck in turn one. (more…)

Chad Chastain came out of a side-by-side battle for the lead and would lead the final 33 laps of Saturday night’s inaugural race of the Joey Coulter Fellows Truck Brokers Florida Pro Truck Series at Desoto Speedway. A nine-truck inversion put fast qualifiers Brent Huber and Michael Burns ninth and eighth in the 20-truck starting field. Gerald Campbell jumped into the lead when the green flag flew and paced the field for the first 16 laps. Chastain and Campbell ran side-by-side all the way around the three-eighths-mile oval for three laps before Chastain cleared Campbell on lap 17. Chastain would begin pulling away while Campbell and Burns staged a side-by-side battle for second for several laps. Campbell would eventually slow in turn two with a mechanical failure, ending his race with 20 laps to go. Chastain fought off a challenge from Burns on the restart and began stretching his lead over the next 10 laps. In the final stages of the race Burns closed the gap a little on Chastain as he weaved his way through lapped traffic, but it wasn’t enough as Chastain cruised to the win. “We were good but we started falling off toward the end,” Chastain said in victory lane. “I guess everybody else fell off like we did.” Burns said the brakes wore out in his truck over the final laps, preventing him from making a final run at Chastain. Cody McDuffie finished third. Bonus money went to Halfway leader #36 Chastain- leading a lap bonus went to #2X of Campbell & Chastain and Leading the most laps bonus went to Chastain. (more…)

BURNS AND GOULD AMONG WINNERS AT ORLANDO SPEEDWORLD ON OPENING NIGHT

Orlando Speedworld LogoDave Westerman, Bithlo, FL – Orlando SpeedWorld began its 40th racing season with some brisk weather that kept fans huddled up all night, but the action they got to see was hot all night long as five racing classes were in action. The Pro Trucks headlined with several new faces in the field that also featured some veterans too. Whitney Poole and Michael Burns grabbed the heat race victories to set the stage for the headliner that would see some great action. Tyler Lau led the initial three circuits before being passed by Becca Monopoli. Burns, who started at the back of the field, worked his way up to challenge and, after some super side-by-side racing, grabbed the lead from Monopoli on lap 12. Becca came right back to lead a pair of laps before Burns used some superior handling in the center of the corners to nab the lead for good. A lap 18 caution for a Kelly Ross spin could not slow Burns as he cruised to the win despite a late charge from veteran Scott Reeves. Monopoli held on for third over Poole and Lau. Rounding out the finishers were Vince Keeler, Eddie Lichtenberger, Ross and Richard Griffis.

The Super Stock feature race was about as crazy as you could get in the late going after young Michael Held led the opening 17 laps and looked like he might be in line for his first big feature win. But veteran shoe Rich Clouser, driving one of three Sanford Auto Dealers Exchange entries, had other ideas as he zipped out front for three laps only to be re-passed by Held, who again led a pair of laps before Clouser regained the lead. With a handful of laps to go, the pair tangled headed into turn one to bring out the caution. After a lengthy discussion, track officials put both to the rear of the field for the restart handing the lead to David Gould. Gould would go on to lead the remaining laps to score yet another SpeedWorld victory as he has been competing here for about 30 of the track’s 40 years. Clouser bounced back to claim second trailed by Brandon Christian, Gino Tuminello, Adam Soukup and Ted Head. (more…)
