Jeff Matthews Led Wire to Wire to Start East Bay’s Winternationals

Jeff Mathews showed everybody his winning ways at his home track, Tuesday night in Tampa, Florida by coming from outside second row starting position to lead all 25 laps for a $1,000 prize in the kick-off race of the 11th Annual Open Wheel Modified portion of East Bay Raceway Park’s 34th Annual Winternationals.

“I run here all year and I knew not to come off the bottom,” explained Mathews, the Modified and Late Model ’09 East Bay track champion.  Also, winning the Modified Championship at Ocala, the Dover FL driver used his own Shaw chassis, powered by Robert Delgado engines, to build a three-second lead over Dave Hess, Jr. when the first yellow came out on lap 11 for mechanical problems on Shane Sabraski’s No. 7A J-Car. Bronson, Clegg, Belkey, and Jarvis Winners at Volusia Speedway Park “January Jump-Start”

VSP MEDIA

Barberville, FL (January 24, 2010)  To say the “January Jump-Start” at Volusia Speedway Park was a success would be actually an understatement.  The “January Jump-Start” was AWESOME from Friday night’s open practice to Sunday afternoon’s features.  Even the few dark clouds overhead could not, did not, spoil such an AWESOME weekend.

A sudden but brief rain shower interrupted the program but the track equipment was out as soon as the rain was over and it only took a short period of time to get the track back into running shape.   Plus it gave the fans some time to eat since once racing started, no one wanted to leave their seat. Glaser tops 4 Cylinder Challengers at Volusia Speedway Park

VSP MEDIA

Barberville, FL (January 23, 2010)  It was packed pits for Volusia Speedway Park for the January Jump-Start.  Very little room was left for racecars to park in the pit area by the time hot laps came around.  All but the Mini Stock divison had full fields of cars which made the fans happy and a great show.

Running heats and features were the Mini Stocks and 4 Cylinder Challengers.  Mini Stocks saw Stanton Mills top the four car field for the heat race as Tony Laporta topped heat one for the 4 Cylinder Challengers and Davey Wolf topped heat number two.

Only five Mini Stocks were in the field for the feature but it ended up being a four car field as the #09 of Tommy Saunders died coming into turn 2 on the warm-up lap.  Blake Spencer had the pole for the 12 lap feature and as they say, “never looked back”.  Spencer lead from green to checkered followed by Jason Intoppo, Dan Kerr, and Stanton Mills.
Gilbert Epsey had the pole for the 15 lap 4 Cylinder Challenger feature and lead the first couple of laps until Vinnie Richards took over.  Richards, who had the only 4 cylinder truck in the field, looked to have a clear path to the checkered but obviously it was not his night as Davey Wolf took the point away from Richards.
However on lap 12, the only red flag of the night came out for Richards who had a fire in the engine compartment.  By the time Richards had stopped his ride, the fire was out but the safety crew got to him quickly to make sure he was not hurt or burned and luckily he was not.

On the restart, R.J. Glaser got the drop on the field.  Although he had a very hard charging and determined Tony Laporta right on his rear bumper, Glaser was able to hold off Laporta and take his first win of 2010 and the $500 purse home.
Following Glaser to the checkered was Tony Laporta, Johnathan Green, Davey Wolf, and Shawn Kosier.
The DIRTcar Sportsman, DIRTcar Modifieds and DIRTcar Street Stocks saw plenty of action as they ran heat races for tomorrow’s features.  The top five in each heat was guaranteed a spot in the feature with the rest of the field running a consi race on Sunday for the feature.

Not making the modified field and will run the consi race for the DIRTcar Modifieds was Dan Arnold, Mike Spatola, P.J. Wiggins, Ronnie Chance, David Ponton, and Darron Smith.  Smith was the winner of heat 3 but was light at the scales and was dq’d.

In the DIRTcar Sportsman, nine cars did not make the field and will run a consi race.  They were Steve Branton, William Northrup, Liza O’Connor, Shane Williams, Karl Haas, Drew Smith, Scott Lagassee, Jr., Richard Wells, and Trevor Gamble.
Running the DIRTcar Street Stock consi are Rick Davis, Jeff Miller, D.J. Nobles, Mick Kulak, David McCormack, Mike Eubanks, Dell Powell, Martin Butcher, and Jody Wells.

The January Jump-Start will continue tomorrow at 2 pm at Volusia Speedway park with heats and feature for the Thunder Stock and consi races and features for the DIRTcar Sportsman, DIRTcar Modifieds, and DIRTcar Street Stocks.
General Admission on Sunday, January 24, is $12.00.  Students 11 – 15 is $6.00 with children 10 and under FREE.   Drive-in parking is $10.00.  Pit gate and grandstands open at 12 noon.

Volusia Speedway Park is located 15 miles west of Ormond Beach, FL on State Road 40. Additional information and updates will be available on the website – www.volusiaspeedwaypark.com, or call 386-985-4402.

Citrus County Speedway Cancels Winter Spectacular II this Saturday

Due to forecasted frigid weather (in the 20’s!) for Saturday, January 9th, the Winter Spectacular II has been cancelled. The fair association has the last two weekends in February spoken for.
Citrus County Speedway’s next race will be the season opener on February 6, when the Mini Stocks and Pure Stocks will each run a 50 lapper andTBARA opens their season as do the Street Stocks and Mini Cups.
Hope to see you then!!!

Rich Clouser Rings in New Year Winning Red Eye 100 at New Smyrna Speedway

KARNAC MEDIA

Samsula, FL (Jan. 2, 2010)  As the moon got higher in the sky, the night air seemed to get colder.  But that did not bother the brave souls who ventured out on January 2nd to New Smyrna Speedway for the first race of the new year – The Red Eye 100.
With twenty five cars in the field, fans were sure to see one good but cold race.  Rich Clouser topped the timing charts with a 17.36 followed by Tim Russell, David Rogers, Justin Larson and Chad Akins.  Clouser pulled the number 5 pill inverting the field with Chad Akins on the pole. (more…)

CLOUSER TOPS RED-EYE 100 at NEW SMYRNA SPEEDWAY

by Andy Sandall – FASCAR Media

(01.02.10 – Samsula, FL) It took just a couple of days into the New Year for the 2010 season to kick off in style at New Smyrna Speedway with the traditional curtain raiser, the Red Eye 100 for Super Late Models. As well as being the start of the new season it also represented the first race of the prestigious FASCAR Triple Crown championship, and gave Florida race fans a chance to grab some early season racing while most of the country was still covered in snow and several months away from heading down to their local track to watch some meaningful racing.

The fans that braved a cold evening in Samsula were treated to an impressive field of Super Late Models, with 23 cars taking the green flag in an action packed race that saw plenty of lead changes and battling for position throughout the field.

An afternoon of testing, tweaking and generally shaking the cars down and getting them race-ready culminated in a qualifying session that saw Palm Bay’s Rich Clouser in the #9 car setting the fast qualifying time, but with the pre-race pill draw putting him back to 5th place on the grid and elevating Chad Akins in the #60 onto the pole position. Alongside him for the start was the #88 of Justin Larson, with pre-race favorites #11 David Rogers and #36 Tim Russell just behind on the second row. Clouser would be just one row back, alongside #61 Mario Gosselin, fresh from his 2009 campaign in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. (more…)

Wayne “Rocketman” Jefferson wins Eddie Brann Memorial

Wayne JeffersonThe racing community came out in force on a chilly December night to support the First Annual Eddie Brann Memorial Race at Citrus County Speedway.

This would be a night that gave race fans and racers alike the chance to celebrate the life of Eddie Brann and pay tribute to his tireless passion for racing, while also raising funds to support his family, especially his young daughter Alyssa.

By the end of the night a check for nearly $8,000 had been presented to Eddie’s wife Barbie, with more hoped to follow once a final count could be made, and the fans had been treated to a night of great racing headlined by a tremendous race featuring one of the most impressive line-ups of open wheel modified racers seen in the Southeast this year. East Bay Rings Out 2009 with Six Features

By Larry Jewett

The 2009 season came to a close at East Bay Raceway Park with six divisions giving the fans a full night of entertainment.

The action started with the Gagel’s Open Wheel Modifieds. John Bradley scored the daily double with a win in his heat and a victory in the feature. Bradley took the lead from the beginning and made the field chase him to the flag. Shane Burrows, Roger Crouse, Jeff Mathews and Brian Hollifield rounded out the top five. Mathews was the track champion.

The Outlaw 4 points were still in contention as the class entered its final night of action. Point leader Stephen Hohlbaugh and Cecil Martin were winners. The heat win for Hohlbaugh cinched the title, but there was still a matter of the 15-lap feature. That main was captured by Brian Danforth, who scored his fifth feature of the year. Danforth took the lead from Dan Chambers, who finished second, ahead of Matt Haynes, Amanda Rogers and Michael Gulvin. (more…)
