Stephen Darvalics Wins the Desoto ProTruck Feature Race at ASA Sanction Desoto Super Speedway with a True Talladega Finish

April 3 2010

By Tom Blakeley

It was a beautiful night for racing and the fans got lots of action as the temperatures rise so does the action.  The 25 lap Truck feature race was amazing.  The first yellow did not fly until lap 19 when Brent Huber spun out.  From that point on it was like a different race.  On lap 23 the second yellow flag flew as Andrew Gipson hit the wall on the backstretch.  The final lap proved to be something to remember.

Going into turn 4 the 48 truck of Bill Manfull pushed the 37 truck of young Nick Hernandez and sent him sideways, the trucks continued on towards the checkered flag and they again got into each other and crossed the finish line spinning and bouncing off the wall.  The fans went wild and the drivers made special hands signs to each other, but it was one great race.  The Truck results are as follows: (more…)

LILLEY FLAG TO FLAG IN TRUCKS – DQ’S ABOUND AGAIN AT AUBURNDALE SPEEDWAY

by Dave Westerman

Keith Lilley made the best of a borrowed ride and the tech shed was once again a busy place as Auburndale Speedway celebrated the Easter weekend with loads of action and fun.

The Auburndale Truck Series made its season debut and Keith Lilley made the most of a ride he picked up for the weekend by dominating both the heat and feature races. Lilley, who said his machine was “handling perfectly” jumped to the early lead and never looked back in posting the win.

Lance Daubach did a great job in finishing second trailed by Tim Sozio. Roger Blevins was fourth and J.R. Garcia took fifth.

The Sportsman class saw Dave Dunkin looking for his third straight win. Dunkin took the heat win and was leading the 25 lap main event when the rear end gears broke on his “Blue Goose” and he headed to the pits while the only caution of the race was displayed to check for fluid on the track.

Jason Stifle took over at that point and set the pace the remainder of the distance with Mark Medeiros well behind in second after a race-long battle with Aaron Williamson.

Unfortunately both the cars of apparent winner Stifle and Williamson did not pass tech inspection awarding the win to Medeiros. Austin Carr, whose team replaced the rear gears of his car after they broke in hot laps, came home with a second place finish followed by Bobby Mobley, Kyle Alford and Brandon Duscherer.

Fred Harrison, Jr. jumped out to an early lead and claimed his third Mini Stock feature win of the year taking the point lead in the process. Aaron Williamson took second spot and was able to pass tech in this car. Heat winner Chris Spring, Chris Narramore, Sr. and Donnie Guy rounded out the top five.

Flagman Julian Mullis needed painkillers for a sore arm after waving the caution flag numerous times during a wild Street Stock feature.

Dave Colpritt led the whole way and was certainly in the right place to be as the cars behind him were at it tooth and nail the entire distance. Twelve cars started the race but just five were left as the checkered flag fell.

Point leader Matt McCrary had the hardest hit as something broke on his machine and he pounded the turn two wall before bouncing back across the track and collecting the car of Austin Jenkins. Both drivers walked away unhurt.

Bobby Mobley trailed Colpritt to the checker as “Big Dave” scored his second win of the year. Jeff Waterman came back from an early race incident to get third with Ken Lawrence fourth and Chuck Harrison, Jr. fifth as the only ones still left on the track.

Heat wins were taken by Colpritt and Jeff Waterman.

There was plenty to discuss in the pits after the Legend Car feature. Jake Perkins appeared to be on his way to a fourth consecutive win. But going into turn three, defending champion Justin Brown drove in hard and punted Perkins into the high groove. Brown made the pass and crossed the stripe for the win.

After much “discussion” the win stood with Perkins claiming second in front of Gerald White, Jr., Mason Ketterman and Dave Gleason. Heat race wins were taken by Perkins and White.

After having a pair of victories snatched from him already this year in tech, Chris Narramore, Jr. easily claimed the V-8 Bomber win and finally passed tech under the watchful eye of the inspectors. Brandon Duscherer was a distant second at the finish trailed by heat winner James Wright II, Josh Borem and Andy Harvard.

The Scrambler feature also saw the apparent winner set down in tech. Gene Harrison drove his Volkswagen by early leader Chad Cutting on lap eight and ran off to the apparent win. However, Harrison refused a tear-down and the win ended up going to Cutting.

Cutting, who is the grandson of the legendary “Tampa Terror” Will Cagle, scored his first win of the year over point leader Kim Gullett, Brian Tyre, Richard Brown and Jeremy Watts.

It was yet another Dwarf Car win for Jonathan Guy as he claimed the victory after a hard-fought battle with Sonny O’Sullivan. Donny Bass was third ahead of his dad Johnny Bass and Zane Davis.

After leader Ryan Shattuck spun out of the lead, Ryan Sobel took over the point and led the rest of the way to claim his first-ever Bandolero feature win. Shattuck drove back to get second but ran out of time before he could catch Sobel. Cameron White was third ahead of Andy Metz and Noah “Lil’ Gater”

Cornman. Shattuck won the heat.

The Kids Club feature race was a first-ever win for young Heather Guy as she topped Dakota Hunt and Brandon Guy. Heather also won the heat race.

Next week the School Bus Figure 8s return along with Street Stocks, Modified Mini Stocks, Legends, Bandeleros, Mini Stocks, V-8 Bombers and Scramblers.

Racing begins at 7 PM. For more information call 863-551-1131 or log on to www.auburndaleracing.com.

Gene Lasker wins in East Bay Sprints Feature at the “Clay by the Bay”

By:  Jason Loughren

04/03/2010

It was another wonderful night for racing in Tampa Bay as fans packed the grandstand at East Bay Raceway Park.  Over 100 cars were on hand for a pre-Easter joy ride around the fastest dirt track in the South.

The Street Stocks were the first class to hit the track for their 15-lap feature event.  Donnie Reed and Gary Sheffield had an awesome battle for the lead as the laps wound down.  Reed was able to make a pass for the lead as Sheffield and Ed Hill were fighting for position.  Reed held off James Hook for the win.  The win was Reed’s 3rd of the young season.  Hook finished 2nd.  Thomas Pratt came home in the 3rd position.  Jarod Gay fought off early troubles and finished 4th and Kevin Silvia hung on for a 5th place finish.  Reed and Hook won the heats.

The East Bay Sprints were up next and Gene Lasker was the man to beat.  Lasker started 4th and was in the lead by the end of the 1st lap.  Lasker drove away from the field and won the race in convincing fashion.   Danny Martin, Jr started 5th and finished 2nd.  Tony Agin finished 3rd.  Rocky Sullivan and Tim George rounded out the top-5.  AJ Maddox and Tim George were victorious in the heats.

Matthew Haynes won his first feature event of the season in the Outlaw 4’s holding off the late charge of Michael Gulvin.  Gulvin finished 2nd.  Cecil Martin started the main event in the 9th position and battled his way to a 3rd place finish.  Billy Howard ran in the top-5 all night long and finished 4th.  Charlie Staats started on the pole and finished 5th.  Haynes and Gulvin won the heats.

Twenty Racecar Engineering Late Models took the green flag in their 25-lap feature event.  Jack Nosbisch, Jr. won the race as he held off the challenge of Bryan Bernhardt to take his first win of the season. Bernhardt finished 2nd.  Wallace Peacock started on the pole and finished 3rd.  Travis Varnadore started 8th and finished 4th.  Mavrick Varnadore started 14th came home with a strong 5th place finish.  Dennis Williams, Roger Crouse, and Nosbisch won the heat races.

In the Motorstats.com 4 cylinder bombers thirty-two cars started the feature event.  Roberto Morfin, Sr. started 5th and swapped the lead with Elliot Morgan for many of the 15 laps.  Morfin, Sr. was victorious as he took the checkered flag by a slim margin over Morgan. Morgan finished 2nd.  Raymond Vann battled early for the lead and finished 3rd.  Roberto Morfin, Jr. started 8th and finished 4th.  Gary Killeen started on the pole and raced to a 5th place finish.  Red Vann appeared to have a 4th place finish but was disqualified in post race inspection.  Dalton Epps, Morgan and Killeen took the heat races.

ASA Sanctioned racing returns to East Bay Raceway Park on Saturday, April 10, 2010 with the Limted Late Models, Gagel’s Open Wheel Modifieds, Street Stocks, Outlaw 4’s, Motorstats.com 4 cylinder bombers and Dirt Daubers all in action.  There will also be fan participation races.. For more information go to www.eastbayracewaypark.com or call the track office.

Easter Weekend Brings Action At Volusia Speedway Park

by VSP Media

BARBERVILLE, FL- A nearly perfect night for racing greeted a holiday weekend crowd at the fastest half mile in the southeast, as five racing divisions went for the checkers and throng of happy kids rifled through a mountain of hay for Easter eggs filled with prizes.  Add an official visit from the Easter Bunny himself, plus a hard fought marshmallow Peeps eating contest on the front stretch, and it all added up to an exciting and fun Saturday night at Volusia Speedway Park.  Challenger racer Davey Wolf washed down 13 pink Peeps with soda in 45 seconds to take top honors, while most other contenders littered the front stretch with Peep debris.

The Budweiser Open Wheel Modified Division opened the feature racing schedule with Rob Underwood at the point, but almost as soon as the flag green waved Jeff Matthews leapt from his fourth place starting position to challenge for the lead.  But on lap 3 the third place car of Trevor Boettcher lost control and smacked hard into the inside front stretch barrier, bringing out a caution.  Boettcher walked away from the violent hit, but his race car was finished.

Jeff Matthews used the restart to overtake Rob Underwood for the lead and immediately began putting real estate between himself and the rest of the field, but developed issues as the caution waved for Matthew Perrimann when his engine expired and he contacted the outside wall in turn one.  Matthews would sneak off of the track on the backstretch under caution leaving the lead to Rob Underwood once again.

Underwood would hold that lead until Jamie Carter took it away on lap 11, then later Underwood would spin out on lap 17 while running second, taking him out of contention for a win.  Carter would hold his lead despite challenges from Chip Owen in the final laps and get the winner’s trophy, followed by Chip Owen for second place and James Smith for third.  Rob Underwood recovered quickly enough to place fourth and Kyle Owen rounded out the top five.

After a weekend off the Daytona Sportswear Street Stocks hit the clay for a 20 lap feature race with Cory Hupp on the pole.  But Phillip Brown stepped up to lead the first lap, then was quickly passed by Trevor Gamble who began to immediately stretch his lead.  Brown hung onto the second spot as Bubba Christian and others argued over the third position.

A caution on lap 10 bunched the leaders up for the restart, but no one was able to outpace Trevor Gamble as the green waved again.  And again after a multi car incident in turns three and four, Gamble handled the restart well and remained out front.  Trevor Gamble collected the win, followed by Phillip Brown and Bubba Christian for second and third.  Greg Vandergriff and Mike Eubanks claimed the fourth and fifth finishing positions.

Twenty-two racers took the green behind pole sitter Drew Smith in the Taylor Racing Products Sportsman feature race, and no sooner than things got underway then trouble erupted.  Marc Kinley and Dan Lane ended up in a wad against the front stretch wall, ending their race night and causing the first of a string of cautions that kept the field tightly bunched through most of the race.  Those cautions also spelled trouble for some top five runners like Aaron Barsness and David Clegg, who were either involved in the incidents or were sent to the rear of the field.

Through restarts and moves for position during racing, Shaun Daugharty maneuvered himself into position to challenge for the lead while Steve Shead and Matt McGillivray moved into top five spots.  Daugharty grabbed the lead on lap 16 and never looked back, forcing a disappointed Drew Smith to settle for the second spot.  Smith was followed by Steve Shead who grabbed the third spot, while Matt McGillivray and Shane Nichols passed under the checkers in the fourth and fifth positions.

So far in 2010 Shawn “Beavis” Kosier has taken home all of the first place hardware, so none of the other 20 racers were thrilled with seeing the yellow number 97 lead the field to the green as the 4 Cylinder Challengers began their 15 lap feature.  And try as they did, none seemed to be able to outrun Kosier either, as he cruised to his third win in a row.

But Kosier never walked away from the field.  A host of various contenders lined up behind him, but fell victim to either mistakes of mechanical issues, leaving Kosier in front.  In the end RJ Glasier raced hard to come from 9th position to finish second, as Casey Feaster fought his way through traffic from a 15th starting position to the third place trophy.  James Sullivan started in the 18th spot but managed to grab a fourth place finish, and Robert Graham came from 12th to wind up fifth on the night.
Luke Sadler had the pole position and looked strong in the early laps of the Amsoil Thunder Stock Division feature, but just short of halfway through the race his engine erupted on the front stretch, handing the lead over to Scott Mooers.  Meanwhile Randy Strehle was focused on finding his way to the leaders, as a weight issue after the earlier heat races had placed his car at the rear of the 17 car field at the start.  Strehle made his way forward and wound up side by side with Mooers on lap 12, eventually wrestling the lead away two laps later.

From that point Strehle managed to stay in front of a determined Scott Mooers and passed under the checkers first, but was challenged in post race tech after his celebration in Victory Lane.  Randy Strehle refused the post race tear down of his engine as required by the challenge and therefore was disqualified, which made Scott Mooers the race winner.  Jim Nichols moved up to the second place finish while Jumpin’ Jim Shaw claimed the third spot.  John Thorpe ended a good night in fourth place and Jim Goempel came home fifth.

Racing returns to Volusia Speedway Park on April 10th for Monster Energy Drink Night, featuring action from the Daytona Dodge Chrysler Late Models, Budweiser Modifieds, Daytona Sportswear Street Stocks, Amsoil Thunder Stocks, and the 4 Cylinder Challengers.  For more information, be sure to visit the official home of the southeast’s fastest half mile online, at www.VolusiaSpeedwayPark.com.
