Dallas Troyer Wins The Magic 4 Feature Race at ASA Sanction Desoto Super Speedway

By Marty Little and Tom Blakeley

April 17, 2010

Bradenton Florida

The weather gods were looking over the oval track tonight.  There was rain to East, rain to the West, Rain to the South, and rain to the North.  But over the speedway was this “big ol” hole in the sky and while it drizzled a few times all the races were run to completion.  It was a special night for young Mr. Dallas Troyer in the silver bullet #01 car.  The quiet and mild mannered lad lit up the inner circle track and won the feature event in the Magic 4 class.  He did this after being sent to the back with only a few laps to go.  He drove a clean hard race and loved going to Victory Circle for the first time this year.  His fellow racers were as happy for him as his proud Mom and Dad.  It sure looks like there will be many wins in this talented drivers future, so watch out for Dallas Troyer.  Taking a close second place was Kyle Best in the black #3 car and Zac Campilonga in the #30 car drove to a great third place.  Zac also gave away another bicycle to a needy youngster at Intermission, this is Zac’s way of giving back.  The Magic 4 class is presented by Desoto Super Speedway as a driver development class for ages 12 to 17 for both boys and girls.  The Magic 4’s are a crowd favorite.

The Flyin 4’s just started as a class last year towards the end of the season and it has quickly grown and become a fan favorite.  There is some real talent behind the wheels, and some exciting racing going on.  Randy Johnson who was a Pure Stock Champion back a couple years ago has once again proven his skills and can be a dominating force in this class.  The only problem for that is little miss Brittany Barr who was the Magic 4 Champion last year and Miss Jessica Ostrovskis also a former Magic 4 Champion.  These two adorable ladies will be giving Randy Johnson all the competition he ever imagined;  all year.  They almost ran Johnson down tonight,  but he prevailed and took first place in the #73 car.  Brittany Barr in the black #81 car was second and Jessica Ostrovskis in the pink bullet #91 won a terrific third.  What a great show it was.

Pure Stocks.  Wow what a race this was.  Darren Ellis and Robert Crisp were either side by side or touching bumpers the entire race.  Races like this are why fans come to the speedway.  When they crossed the finish line it was Darren Ellis winning it in the #71 car.  Robert Crisp in the #30 car in second and Duane Best in the #3 car taking third place.

Street Stocks.  The Street Stock class is coming back with a vengeance. Duane Best in car #3 won tonight’s feature race in a car he never drove before and was brand new to him.  Jonathan Heidenthal in the #27 car took second after starting in the rear and driving a great race. Derek Lucas in the orange #88 car took a terrific third.

Trophy Dash.  This year’s newest class and wild and crazy doesn’t get close to describing it.  From antlers on roofs to police lights, no yellow flags and drivers looking to wreck makes this one whacky event.  It is not about the money for these guys as they drive for the trophy only.

TBARA Sprints

Veteran Sonny Hartley drove around Tommy Nichols on lap 16 and sped to his first TBARA feature victory in several seasons in Saturday night’s 30 lap sprint car headliner at DeSoto Super Speedway.

Things got off to a rough start in the feature when outside front row starter Dakotah Stephens broke an axle and spun in front of the field on the first lap. The ensuing melee took out point leader Shane Butler, Dude Teate, Troy DeCaire and Stephens.

When the green waved following the clean up it was pole sitter Steve Heisler out front with Hartley, Tommy Nichols and Johnny Gilbertson in tow. Nichols quickly worked around Hartley for second but a caution waved on lap five when leader Heisler looped his mount to put Nichols in front over Hartley.

The field reformed and it was Nichols the point man but Hartley was on his game this night and kept the pressure on before making a pass for the lead on lap 16. Once in front it was no contest as Hartley motored away until a yellow waved for debris on lap 28. The offending trash was removed from the racing surface and Hartley never looked back, taking his No. 27 to the checkers ahead of Nichols, Larry Brazil, Jr., Bo Hartley and Ben Fritz.

Heat race victories went to DeCaire and Gilbertson.

Feature finish (30 laps) – 1. Sonny Hartley, 2. Tommy Nichols, 3. Larry Brazil, Jr. 4. Bo Hartley, 5. Ben Fritz,

6. Johnny Gilbertson, 7.David Retzlaff, 8. Steve Heisler, 9. Larry Brazil, 10. D.J. Hoelzle, 11. Dakotah Stephens, 12.Troy DeCaire, 13. Dude Teate, 14. Shane Butler, 15. Joey Aguilar DNS

IT’S TIM RUSSELL ALL THE WAY IN AMF CHASSIS 100 AT AUBURNDALE SPEEDWAY

by Dave Westerman

Auburndale Speedway saw its biggest crowd of the year Saturday night as the fans were treated to some outstanding racing. On top of the racing action, one lucky fan took home nearly $550 in the 50/50 raffle and “Lindsey’s Little Racers” gave away four brand new bicycles complete with helmets to four lucky kids. Two of those bikes were purchased and donated Saturday afternoon by Ronnie Sims of Becton-Sims Racing.

A top-notch field of 23 Late Models were on hand although mechanical issues in practice kept Jonathan Guy from competing. With several veteran hot shoes in the field it was youth being served in time trials as Jason Vail surprised everyone by setting quick time. The Clermont youngster had his Ron Vail Plumbing #407 on rails turning a lap at 13.472 seconds while recent FAST Series winner Jeff Scofield was second quick at 13.492. Tim Russell, making his first-ever venture to the Auburndale track, turned third quick time ahead of Georgia visitor Jason Hogan and “The Bulldozer,” Kevin Ingram. Vail’s quick lap was worth an extra $100 from JPL Auto Empire. (more…)

Vanderley Repeats! Wins PLM Feature

Apr 17, 2010 – Vanderley Repeats! Wins PLM Feature

There’s nothing like a trip to Victory Lane to put disappointment in your rearview mirror. Just ask D.J. Vanderley. The 18 year old erased the pain of a settling for his second college choice with a dominant win in the Pro Late Model Division on Friday at Five Flags Speedway. VanderLey is now two-for-two with wins in each race this season.

“This definitely helps,” said Vanderley, who chose to attend Auburn when scholarship money wasn’t enough to enroll at Georgia Tech. “Georgia Tech was my dream school, but it didn’t work out. But Auburn is going to be a really good education, too.”

Don’t pity Vanderley too much, though. He already has been awarded a presidential scholarship to Auburn and received admissions to its honors college. Plus, he’s one heck of a racecar driver. “All the stars seem to be lining up for us,” Vanderley said. “The first race out here, we were a little loose. Tonight, we were a little tight. We know where we want to be.” A scary thought for the rest of the division.

After an early crash in the 40-lap feature, which did damage to defending series champion Ronnie Smith, Vanderley gradually worked his way to the front. He finally got by leader David Jones at the start-finish line on Lap 19. As much as runner-up Keith Thorpe tried to cut into VanderLey’s massive lead, the kid just kept pulling away.

“Two poles, two wins. It doesn’t get much better than this so far,” Vanderley said. He did in fact win the pole, but started sixth when an unlucky roll of the dice pushed him back to sixth for the feature’s start. The dice roll nearly cost him when an opening-lap pileup caught Smith, Thomas Praytor, Kyle Bryant and almost included him. “I swear that was scary,” said Vanderley, who dodged trouble with some nifty driving. “I didn’t think I’d make it through. It was a headache.”

That’s about the only pain the young man felt Friday.

Modified Division
Ryan Redmon might have lost his power steering, but he didn’t lose his speed in taking his second consecutive Modified feature.
“I lost my power steering with about 10-12 laps left, so I got a little workout,” the Marianna resident said. But it didn’t matter. He had already built a commanding lead.

Redmon took the lead on Lap 2 with a strong move to the outside. He passed three cars, including polesitter Gerald Wilkerson coming out of Turn 4. The caution flag came out on Lap 5 when Chris Cotto spun out while running third. Three laps later, the second and final caution came out when Mike Maddox, who had just taken over third place, had a mechanical failure.

After the restart, Redmon pulled away. Nathan Ingersoll took second, while Wilkerson was third.

Sportsman Division
Steve Buttrick used his favorite line at the top of the track to capture his second win in as many weeks. Buttrick took the lead for good at the end of Lap 14 when then-leader Willie Kitchen got sideways. Jim Pokrant finished third.

“I could get used to this,” Buttrick said. A two-car crash on the opening lap had the night’s polesitter Bubba Winslow in the thick of it. After some work quick back at his hauler, Winslow put his car back on the track with his front-end smashed. Winslow, who entered the night just two points shy of Buttrick in the division’s standings, valiantly drove to an eighth finish to earn some crucial points.

Three-time defending series champion Randy Thompson, a contender early in the race, had serious mechanical issues and finished a distant 10th.

Bombers Division
When he needed it most, Mike Goraum snatched the checkered flag. With Daryl Lynchard, who came into the night leading in points, out because of an early crash, Goraum seized the opportunity. “It was a great night,” he said.

Goraum passed Rick Grimes the midway point and held on despite a couple of restarts because of cautions. Grimes finished runner-up with Tony Boyd third.

Caleb Holman tops Crane Cams 250 at New Smyrna Speedway

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. (April 17, 2010) – Caleb Holman led twice for 126 laps in Saturday night’s Crane Cams 250 at New Smyrna Speedway to record the second victory of his USARacing Pro Cup Series career and his first since 2008.

Holman’s only other Pro Cup victory came at Bristol [Tenn.] Motor Speedway two years ago.

“Bristol is kinda like winning at Daytona in that it’s really great, everybody loves it and it’s a big deal, but it’s not your typical race track,” Holman said after taking a 1.791-second victory over John Gibson. “Honestly, I feel like this is our first win on a typical, Pro Cup race track. It’s slick, hard to get a hold of. So this win means as much as Bristol to me.”

The Abingdon, Va., driver took the lead for good on lap 152 when leader Stephen Nasse’s All American Concrete Chevrolet Monte Carlo slid up towards the fourth turn wall. Nasse’s slip allowed Holman and Clay Rogers to scoot underneath him as they exited the corner. That maneuver provided Holman with first and Rogers with second.

Rogers continuously challenged Holman during the remaining laps – first on the high side, then low, and at times, clinging to his rear bumper, trying to force Holman into making a mistake. But Rogers’ tactics failed.

“It’s not too often you get to make Clay Rogers work, so we were making him work for it. I’m glad of that,” said the 26-year-old Holman, who qualified third for the 250-lap race at the half-mile track. “He drove us real clean. There were several times there he could have wrecked us with lapped cars and stuff.”

Ironically, it was a miscue by Rogers on lap 236 in the second turn that provided Holman with a little breathing room and practically assured him of the victory. Rogers’ USG Sheetrock Ford Fusion was too high in turn two as he attempted to pass Holman and it smacked the wall. Rogers managed to nurse his damaged race car to a fourth-place finish, one lap down. After taking the checkered flag, he parked his car on pit road, climbed from it and walked into victory lane to congratulate Holman, who was still seated in his Food Country USA Chevrolet Monte Carlo.

Early in the event it appeared pole winner Rogers would breeze to his second victory of the 2010 season. The series defending champion assumed the lead on lap 45 after J.P. Morgan spun and hit the fourth-turn wall head-on while battling Rogers for the top spot. For the next 66 laps, no one could match Rogers’ horsepower. At one point, he led Holman by half a lap and had relegated all but four cars to a lap off the pace. Then the fourth yellow flag waved on lap 108 when Brandon Sweet spun on the backstretch. Holman assumed the lead for the first time during that caution period when he beat Rogers off pit road even though both received only fuel during the stop.

Holman led the next 27 laps before Nasse snatched the lead from the Virginia driver with a fuel only stop during the fifth caution period. Nasse had taken four tires during his last stop, thus allowing him to receive only fuel on this one. Holman had to take four tires. However, once Holman passed Nasse for the lead on lap 152, he never relinquished it. He eventually averaged 71.553 mph in the race that was slowed by eight caution flags for 54 laps and had four lead changes among four drivers.

In addition to Holman snapping a 17-race winless streak, 25-year-old John Gibson and the 14-year-old Nasse produced the best finishes of their Pro Cup careers. Gibson finished second in his MitiGator Ford Fusion, while Nasse posted a third in his Chevrolet Monte Carlo.

“About halfway through, I was really doubting whether or not we would actually be able to pull this off,” Gibson said. “We had a plan of taking tires really late and we just kinda stuck to it and it benefited us at the end. We were horrible at first. Then with 50 (laps) to go we got track position and got tires on it and she came to the front. I was really surprised.”

During his post-race interview, Gibson saluted the job turned in by the young Nasse.

“Hats off to Stephen,” Gibson continued. “He had a heck of a race on the outside. I could not get by him. He did a real good job. Coming to that restart, he checked up just a little bit and I thought, ‘Man, it’s 10 to go. You’ve got to shove your nose in there.’ So I just buried it in there, but he didn’t give me any room. It was a lot of fun.”

Nasse’s third-place finish and first top-5 came in only his third Pro Cup event.

“I think I drove a great race tonight,” Nasse said. “I definitely love the outside here. I’ve always raced it. Even during speed weeks I raced it. I just love the outside at any track.”

The USAR Pro Cup Series takes a week off before the season’s third race on May 1 at Hickory [N.C.] Motor Speedway.
