VSP Celebrates Teen Night with Fastlane Five Racing

by VSP Media

BARBERVILLE, FL-  The younger generation was the focus on Teen Night as Volusia Speedway Park featured five divisions of high speed racing action on Saturday.  The Budweiser Modifieds were back, as well as the Taylor Racing Products Sportsman Division, plus the Daytona Sportswear Street Stocks, Amsoil Synthetics Thunder Stocks, and the 4 Cylinder Challengers.

Jason Davis was the talk of the Budweiser Modifieds as he showed up with a brand new Snow Brothers modified that had never turned any laps, but “new” and “untested” can sometimes be a bad combinaton, as Davis soon found out.  The car never got going in hot laps as water spewed from the overflow, and as Davis hit the track for his heat race he got about a lap and a half in before the new engine totally uncorked on the backstretch, ending his night.

Kyle Bronson had knocked the new off of his modified the previous weekend at Ocala Speedway and was ready for the challenge of the big half mile at Volusia on Saturday.  Larry Burkins had the pole but Bronson blew by him to snatch the lead and never looked back. Kyle Bronson got the win in dominating fashion, going flag to flag and making it look easy.  Jamie Carter snagged the second place finish behind Bronson, while Larry Burkins had to settle for the third spot.  Jeff Mathews somehow got stuck in fourth place and remained there to the finish, as Wayne Hammond rounded out the top five.

“Double Down” Danny Vogel also showed up with a new ride as the Taylor Racing Products Sportsman Division got down to business, and Vogel’s debut went far more smoothly.  Aaron Barsness led the field to the green flag and seemed in control despite the efforts of Steve Shead, but Shead had to contend with Stanton Mills who has been on fire as of late, and that kept him distracted enough to remain in second place.

Danny Vogel may have been in a new car, but he drove it like he knew it well, climbing through the field and making his way into the top three.  Vogel used a restart to propel his way to the second position, then went to work on Barsness.  Vogel managed to use the slower car of Heinz Haas as a rolling pick to steal the lead at one point, but at virtually the same time a spinning car in turn one slowed the field and took Vogel’s move away.  Barsness was able to hang on from that point, and despite Vogel’s best efforts Aaron Barsness got the win as Danny Vogel settled for second place.  Steve Shead hung on to claim third, while Stanton Mills and Chris Day finished fourth and fifth.

Sometimes a rise to the top can result in a sudden and unexpected decent, and the Daytona Sportswear Street Stocks offered up a prime example in the fortunes of Joe Belkey.  After unplanned absence Belkey returned to Volusia Speedway Park last weekend and won, and that had him feeling pretty confident as this week’s race began.  Mike Tovet was back on top as he led from the pole, but Belkey was making moves and coming fast.  Grady Christian was in third place when he spun in turn four, spotting Belkey up to his spot in the field and relegating “Shady” Grady to the rear, but just three laps later it was Belkey who found himself planted in the guardrail at the exit of turn two, ending his night with a ride on a hook.

Trevor Gamble had a consistent and strong run going, and managed to wrestle the lead from Mike Tovet on lap 7 as Phillip Brown and Justin Sirmons moved into the top five behind the leaders.  But Tovet was undaunted by losing the lead, and patiently waited for Gamble to leave an opening for him on lap 11.  Once that door was opened Gamble could not shut it again, and Mike Tovet retook the lead and won the race.  Trevor Gamble settled for second place while Justin Sirmons improved his standing to a third place finish.  Phillip Brown took the fourth spot, while Grady Christian battled his way from the rear to salvage a fifth place finish.

David Whitt had his lucky 13 car on the pole for the Amsoil Synthetic Lubricants Thunder Stock feature race, and he used that position to hold off Luke Sadler and Scott Mooers and lead for two thirds of the race.  But a lack of cautions had the field spread out, and that meant that the leaders were having to negotiate their way around slower traffic, which sometimes can result in mishaps when slow cars do not get out of the way fast enough.

Whitt was well in front of Sadler when he overtook Delbert Moyers’ slower car on the frontstretch.  Moyer failed to choose a line and got loose, moving across the track in front of Whitt, and that caused the two to collide hard, spinning both out and sending Whitt’s machine careening into the wall.  Both cars left the track on a hook as crews cleaned up the debris, and Luke Sadler assumed the lead.  Meanwhile, this was Moyers’ second major crash where his car came in contact with the race leaders this season.  It was Moyers’ car that was hit by Randy Strehle as he and Scott Mooers raced through the final turn on March 13th, resulting in Strehle’s flip and fire on the front stretch.

Luke Sadler hung on for the win, followed by Scott Mooers and Tom Hughes.  Wally Douglass placed fourth, while Matt Schell battled his way to the fifth spot.

Gilbert Espy led from the pole as the 4 Cylinder Challengers took the green, but handling issues had his car reversing through the top five as Harold Lewis rocketed past him for the lead.  Tony Laporta started in the fourth position and quickly climbed to second place, but never found a way to overtake Lewis who was certainly on his game.  Steven Cox struggled a bit at first, but found his groove and maintained the third position.

As the field strung out the leaders worked their way through traffic, lapping slower cars along the way. Laporta refused to let Lewis get away, but Harold Lewis was too much for the 3T machine so Tony Laporta found a degree of satisfaction in being second at the finish.  Steven Cox placed third while James Smith notched the fourth spot, and Gilbert Espy wrestled his ill handling machine to a fifth place finish.

Memorial Day Weekend brings the Annual Sportsman Spectacular to Volusia Speedway Park next Saturday, May 29th.  The Taylor Racing Products Sportsman Division will be racing for $1200 first place payout, plus fans can see action from the Daytona Dodge Chrysler Late Models, Daytona Sportswear Street Stocks, Amsoil Thunder  Stocks, and the 4 Cylinder Challengers.  For more information, please visit www.VolusiaSpeedwayPark.net!

George, Sullivan Pace East Bay Sprints

By:  Larry Jewett

5/22/2010

The East Bay Sprints faced double features which brought some exciting action as Tim George and Rocky Sullivan notched their first wins of the year. Altogether, four drivers scored first wins of the year as motorstats.com 4 Cylinder Bomber winner Troy Dittebrand and Outlaw 4 winner Chris Zimmerman joined the group.

The red flag flew often on Saturday night, coming out on three occasions. Alex Boerner did a flip and a half in the Limited Late Model feature. George Handy did a half roll in a motorstats.com 4 Cylinder Bomber heat. Gene Lasker flipped his Sprint while leading after contact with a lapped car.

Tim Gay doubled up in Limited Late Models with a convincing victory.  Taking the lead from polesitter John Bradley by the second lap, Gay had to hold off Forrest Gough for the victory. Trailing Gough were Jason Pope, point leader J.R. Prather Jr., and Bradley. Prather and Gough claimed heat wins.

The Outlaw 4s saw new winner Chris Zimmerman avenge some bad luck from a few weeks previous. Zimmerman went wire-to-wire, keeping point leader Matthew Haynes behind him as the two proved to be the class of the field. Amanda Rogers saw a strong run yield a third place finish, ahead of Cecil Martin and Billy Howard. Zimmerman and Brian Danforth won heats.

Thomas Pratt notched his fifth win of the 2010 season by claiming the win in the Precision Kia Street Stocks. His twin brother Clarence worked his way through the field for a career best second place finish. Thomas Pratt took the lead after early leader Eric Moon suffered a tire issue on lap 13. Buck Woodhouse scored third with Jarod Gay and James Hook fourth and fifth. Point leader Donnie Reed, who had picked up a heat win, fell out at the midpoint. John Clark took the other heat.

The East Bay Sprint make-up feature from April 17 saw 16 cars return. Former track champion Tim George powered his way to the win over point leader Gene Lasker, Billy Boyd, Danny Jones and Rocky Sullivan. In the main event, Lasker rocketed from his fourth starting spot to grab the lead in the backstretch. Lasker had checked out, but tangled with a lapped car and flipped in turn one. The mishap gave Sullivan the lead with George chomping at a chance to double up. Sullivan could not be caught with George settling for second. Tony Agin crossed third with Keith Butler charging from 16th to fourth. Danny Jones added a second top five for the day. Clint Reynolds was disqualified for an illegal carburetor, wiping out a top five finish.

An exciting late race pass by Troy Dittebrand vaulted him from third to first and he successfully defended to gain his first win in the motorstats.com 4 Cylinder Bomber main. Point leader Kever Raulerson survived some last lap tangles to cross the line second. Heat winner Darrell Taylor finished third. Early race leader Richard Humfeld scored his first top five with a fourth. Patrick Fiore rounded out the top five. Johnnie Alexander and John Detamore joined Taylor with heat wins.

Tommy Zwally put his Ford-powered 1937 Ford in front of the Florida Old Time Modified field for a 10-lap victory. Don Land prevailed in the heat.

ASA sanctioned racing returns to East Bay Raceway Park on Saturday, May 29, 2010.  Action for Racecar Engineering Late Models, Limited Late Models, Gagel’s Auto Parts Open Wheel Modifieds, Precision Kia Street Stocks and Outlaw 4s will fill the bill. For more information, go to www.eastbayracewaypark.com or call the track office.

Tough Night at Ocala as Late Models Tune for the Powell

by BJ Cavin- Ocala Speedway Media

OCALA, FL-  Thunderstorms to the north and west created a cool breeze at Ocala Speedway as fans and racers gathered for another Friday night of action at Florida’s oldest racetrack, but the weather stayed well clear of the area surrounding the speedway.  The only thunder at Ocala Speedway was on the track, but that storm did plenty of damage as the night progressed.

The tone for the night was set early on as the Mini Stocks hit the clay for their feature race.  Keith Briggs looked tough in hot laps but failed to return for his heat race as a cracked head ended his night.  And things continued to go bad as the green waved to begin the race, as Paul Combast and Dan Kerr wound up in a wad on the front stretch.  That accident forced Combast to the pits with front end damage and a flat tire, while Kerr’s car needed to leave on a hook.  Meanwhile Nick Kerr also had problems as his car quit under caution and was pushed to the pit area, and on the next try at a start Brack Gill suffered a flat and also had to exit to the pits.

That left a mere four cars on the track for the race, which finally went green and stayed that way until the checkers waved.  Paul Combast had returned to the track with a new tire under caution and quickly took the lead as the green flag started the race, and no one managed to present a challenge to him.  Dean Kinsey joined the field as the race continued, as did Brack Gill, but both were laps down to the field.  Paul Combast secured the win followed by Ray Ethridge and David Miller for second and third place.  Ryan Babcock was fourth, while Dean Kinsey was fifth.

And if attrition was an issue with the Mini Stocks, it was the name of the game when the Amsoil Synthetic Lubricants V8 Thunder Stocks were turned loose.  Sean Babcock led from the pole and looked to be in control early on, but Michael Stalnaker made a two car pass in turn 2 and grabbed the lead on lap 3.  But Willard Driggers was steadily working his way forward, and Chris Shea had his EBD Racing machine right on the rear bumper of the leader.  Unfortunately for Shea, contact in turn two resulted in the right rear wheel coming off of the 76 car, ending his night before he could catch Stalnaker, and during that same caution Michael Stalnaker also went to the pit area and stayed, ending his night as well.  That put Willard Driggers in front, and Driggers held off all challengers from there.

The race had two red flags as Jessie Corbitt did a spectacular flip in turn 4, and Sean Babcock was the victim of contact and flipped in the exact same spot later in the race.  Both drivers walked away, but their race cars were trashed. In fact, just over half of the original 20 starters managed to finish the race as breakdowns and contact thinned the field.  Willard Driggers held on and won the race as Austin Kirkpatrick gained seven spots to notch a second place finish.  James Edwards placed third, while Scott Mooers and Jerrid Bennett rounded out the top five.

With the Annual Powell Memorial just a couple of weeks away, quite a few Late Model teams chose to forgo going for more money at other tracks, and instead came to Ocala to get some laps in preparation for the biggest and most prestigious Late Model race of the season.  And what they learned is that they seriously need to come up with a plan to outrun Jack Nosbisch, as the 12 car spanked the field, leading from flag to flag and dominating the race.

But while Nosbisch was safe and sound out in front, there was plenty of rough stuff going on behind him.  Jeff Mathews had a night to forget, but won’t be able to as he puts the 33 machine back together again.  Mathews seemed to play the roll of a pinball, bouncing off of everything from race cars, to the wall, and even a tractor tire, before finally driving it to the pits before another incident could likely cause him to need a wrecker. Larry Anderson ended up running with no front end sheet metal on his car thanks to contact, and Richard Ferry and Adam Bedenbaugh both left the race early thanks to heavy contact.

While Jack Nosbisch won the race, there was quite a battle for the next few spots behind him.  Phillip Cobb  wound up finishing in second place, holding off Mark Whitener who finished third.  J.O. Nobles stayed in the top five all night and finished fourth, while Christian Augspurger had an impressive run to grab the fifth spot.

Fans are quickly learning that leaving before the Gladiators race might cheat them out of seeing some of the best competition of the night, and again 4 cylinder racers put on quite a show on Friday night.  Matt Shea took control right from the start, blasting past pole sitter Mike McDonald and grabbing the lead, but Casey Feaster was not about to let him run away from the field.  Feaster and Shea battled for the entire race until Devin Walker put some early problems behind him and came barreling through the field at the halfway point.

Having a hard charging Devin Walker in the mix complicated things for the leaders, while it had the girls screaming and the fans applauding in the grandstands.  Feaster managed to briefly steal the lead from Shea, but the 96 car was just a tad too stout for Feaster’s Focus to overcome, and Walker’s efforts fell just short of earning him the second spot.  Matt Shea scored his second feature win in as many weeks while Casey Feaster followed in second place, and despite a mad dash for the checkers, Devin Walker settled for third place behind Feaster.  Mike McDonald salvaged a fourth place finish, and Steven Johnson struggled on the night but earned the fifth spot.

Next Friday night, May 28th, Ocala Speedway will feature the return of the Open Wheel Modifieds and the Sportsman Division, plus there will be action from the Tee Pee Tire Hobby Stocks and the Gladiators as well.  Gates will open at 5PM and racing will follow at 8PM.  For more information, or to see the complete schedule of events at Ocala Speedway, please visit www.OcalaSpeedway.com.

Chad Pierce Wins Joslin Memorial Modified 50 at SpeedWorld

by Andy Sandall, FASCAR Media

Orlando Speedworld – 21st May 2010

The Joslin Memorial 50 for the regular Open Wheel Modifieds was top of the bill on a beautiful Friday night at Orlando Speedworld, and the drivers treated the fans to a great race and a win by the slimmest of margins. The regular divisions provided their usual thrills and spills, with plenty of cars brushing the walls, spinning across the track and, for two Legend car drivers, literally saw loose wheels flying across the infield.

The Bandoleros began the night’s action with a race that saw a scary moment early when #30 Noah Cornman lost control in a spin and reversed straight up the banks to hit the wall squarely with his back bumper. Thankfully the youngster was OK but his car was unable to continue. Once their 12 lap feature ended it was again #17 Mark Hooven who came home ahead of brother #14 Shawn Hooven in the Young Gun class, while #55 Michael Held survived a late spin and restart to continue his 100% record in the Bandit class, well ahead of #00 Brandon Lynch.

A growing field of Sportsman cars would be the first of the senior divisions to race, and all eyes were on #66 Andy Nicholls, the points leader who returned to the track after mechanical troubles saw him retire on the opening lap the previous week. Starting on the 2nd row behind championship rivals #11 Henry Shepherd and #3 James Frisbie, Shepherd made the best start as Nicholls coolly moved under Frisbie to drop into 2nd and then set off after the leader. Frisbie was now left to defend his position from the hard-charging #32 Shelton Bowers. Bowers tried to replicate Nicholls earlier move going into turn 3, but a big hit on Frisbie’s rear quarter sent the #3 spinning up to the wall. A flat tire was the end result for Frisbie, but after a trip to the pits for a wheel change he would return for the restart and complete the race.

The green flag dropping saw Shepherd again move to the front, but now he had #00 Brandon Johnson right on his tail, with Nicholls swarming all over both drivers as he looked for a line around. Johnson saw his chance two laps later with a low pass on Shepherd into turn 3, and Nicholls was quick to follow on the high line. By the halfway point the two lead cars were well clear of Shepherd in 3rd, but it was beginning to show that Nicholls car was perfectly dialed in and had superior speed in the turns.

It took until the 15 lap for this extra pace stamp its mark on the race. Twice Nicholls tried runs down the inside into the turns, but a blocking move from Shepherd and then the discovery of a slower car running low caused him to quickly abort his pass, his car squirming under his hard braking in both cases. Then, with just 4 laps left, Nicholls made his decisive move by tapping Johnson hard to the rear in turn 4, unsettling the leader and forcing him slightly wide, leaving enough room to power through heading into turn 1. By the checkered flag Nicholls had pulled away in the lead, leaving Johnson to settle for 2nd after a great performance in a seriously over-matched car. Shepherd would take 3rd ahead of Bowers and Frisbie.

The big story in the Super Stock race was whether #16D David Gould could continue his ‘hero or zero’ season, where in every race this season he’s either finished first or retired before the end. Starting back in 6th place Gould had it all to do if he wanted to get his push for the points championship back on course after recent disappointing weeks. Gould would waste no time in working his way up the field to take 2nd place as early the 2nd lap, but up at the front #77 Justin Reynolds was in no mood to give up his lead without a major fight.

Several laps would pass as Gould continued his hunt for Reynolds, nibbling away at his lead and getting closer with ever trip around the track. Suddenly the yellow lights came on for a caution as the track crew rushed over to #316 Joe Bandur, parked in the infield after an earlier retirement, but who’s car had crept too close to the track for safety and needed to be pushed back to the pits.

The restart would put Reynolds and Gould together, but the moment the green flag dropped it would be Gould who pulled away, leaving Reynolds to mount a spirited charge that threatened at first but would soon tail away. Gould would soon confirm the continuation of his remarkable finishing record with a comfortable win, with Reynolds taking 2nd after beating off a late challenge from #721 John Bennett.

A small field of Mini Stocks came out for a shortened 15-lap feature, and memories of last week’s nose-to-tail battle between #31 David Russell and #85 Rex ‘Boneman’ Hollinger were quickly stirred up as the two drivers, both starting on the outside of their respective rows, tried to power around the outside right from the green flag. Russell would quickly be around pole-sitter #15 Casey Loeffler and Hollinger would get alongside #78 Mark Avery, but a robust block from Avery would see Hollinger swiftly applying the brakes and dropping back. Russell would set off and build a large lead with Avery in pursuit as Hollinger settled back to look for ways around Loeffler.

Hollinger would find his way up to 3rd just a lap later with a low-groove pass out of turn 2 but by now Russell was clear at the front and Avery already pulling away in 2nd. Both chasing cars would eat into Russell’s lead slightly over the following laps, but he would respond and pull away towards the end before crossing the finish line to take yet another 2010 win to cement his place at the top of the points standing. Avery would take 2nd and Hollinger 3rd, both well clear of Loeffler at the rear.

Once the driver introductions had been finished it was time for the Modified drivers to get to work as they lapped the track preparing for the 50-lap Joslin Memorial race. The post-qualifying invert handed pole position to #98 Robbie Cooper, alongside #55 Shain Held and just ahead of the two pre-race favorites #66 Jerry Symons and #38 Chad Pierce. Fast time setter in  qualifying #97 Matthew Wheeler would start from the back after needing a tire change before the race.

Cooper would use his pole position perfectly to keep the lead as the cars completed the first lap, but by now Symons had already made short work of Held to grab 2nd, leaving him to defend his position from Pierce. The move by Pierce to get under Held for 3rd would come just before Symons made a near identical move on the leader to seize the initiative in the race, leaving Cooper to deal with the constant bumps from behind as Pierce let it be known he wanted to be fighting it out with Symons at the front.

Behind the leader the race for 5th was equally entertaining, in no small part to the visibly loose #29 car of Joe Yarborough, sliding its way around every corner. Yarborough’s battle with #13 John Ditges and Wheeler for 5th soon provided the first caution of the race as Ditges followed Wheeler around the sliding Yarborough, but contact between the two saw Wheeler spinning up the track and into the wall. He was able to pull away and take his place at the rear of the field for the restart, which quickly saw Symons away in the lead again, but now with Pierce behind him thanks to a smart move underneath Cooper in turn two to advance his position.

The poor handling of Yarborough’s car caused another quick caution, this time as he himself span in turn 3. Again Symons and Pierce made good starts and looked set for a race for the lead, but this was quickly halted once Ditges, Yarborough and #330 Joe Gerard Sr. came together at the back of the field, span and headed hard up into the turn 3 wall.  Ditges was able to pull away under his own power once pulled clear, Yarborough was able to continue once pulled clear by track staff, but Gerard was not so lucky and had to head back to the pits with his race over.

Once the pace truck pulled off once more it was Pierce who took the initiative, making a tremendous start to pull around Symons and snatch the lead for the first time. Behind him Held was mounting an attack on Cooper’s 3rd place, but this was short-lived as he quickly dropped back leaving Cooper to concentrate on chasing the lead cars. Soon Symons had clamped himself on Pierce’s rear bumper as the two cars clocked lap after lap with bumping and nudging the whole way around the track. Cooper would join the party, showing the same respect to Symons that the 2nd place man was showing to the leader with an array of pushes, shoves and nudges to try and unsettle the car in front of him.

The tension was finally broken as the race hit 40 laps after a spin in turn 2 for Held. This would see Pierce and Symons back alongside each other for the restart, but Pierce was quick to repay the earlier contact with a big nudge to the side of Symons’ car as they headed into the first turn, sending him high and giving Pierce breathing room to stay on-line and regain his lead. But this had been for nothing once another incident behind him, again involving Yarborough, Ditges and this time #41 Doc McKinney, saw the three cars hook together and head into the turn 2 wall. Yarborough and Ditges’ luck finally ran out as all 3 cars headed back to the pits with the aid of the tow trucks.

Pierce would take charge from the restart to get back to the lead, blocking Symons with everything he had. Cooper remained in contention, but was needing the front two cars to make errors if he was to grab a win. As the laps counted down the hits to Pierce’s rear got harder and more frequent, but nothing seemed to ruffle the feathers of the Orlando specialist as he took every hit in his stride and was soon taking the checkered flag and coming around to victory lane. Symons would take a hard-fought 2nd place, although the badly mangled front-bumper on his car that was visible to all the crowd showed how hard he had been pushing for the victory. Cooper claimed a good 3rd place, ahead of Held and #40 Michael Williams, who had avoided trouble all race to claim a creditable finish.

The return of #99 Alex Kempf to Orlando Speedworld was the big story for the Legends division, with Kempf making his first appearance at the track in 2010 after a dominant season last year. Straight away he was back into the groove with outrageous moves from the rear to pass the entire field and be leading by the time the first lap was in the books. Following him closely came #12 Critter Saile, multiple winner this season in Kempf’s absence, and soon the two were racing hard at the front to the delight of the fans in the stands. With just 3 laps to go Saile could still not find a way around Kempf’s car so resorted to desperate measures with a ‘checkers or wreckers’ dive under the leader coming around turn 4. This sent both cars high up and hard into the wall, both cars slamming back down onto the track minus their front right wheels, which by now were bouncing across the infield grass before coming to rest for retrieval by track staff.

Now minus the two leaders the restart would see just 3 cars left in the race. Quickly #8 Donovan Ponder took control to power ahead of #51 x Roger Englund and put distance between himself and his rivals. The checkered flag would quickly be thrown to give Ponder the 2nd win of his young career, well ahead of Englund.

The Pro Truck race started spectacularly as the front row of #17 Ken Lilley and #00 Whitney Poole headed into turn 1 leaning hard on each other and causing the rest of the drivers behind them to quickly slam on their brakes, seeing the unlucky #20 Anthony Sergi and #26 Jessica Murphy left with no option but to spin out to avoid the gaggle of rapidly decelerating cars ahead of them. Once restarted Lilley and Poole would again head the field, but rapidly making ground on them both came #2 Sean Bass, who would take just 3 laps to make a great move in turn 2 that saw his car hook-up mid-turn and slingshot underneath Lilley down the back straight for the lead.

Bass would build a big lead as Sergi and Murphy fought back from their first lap woes to work their way towards the front. Sergi would have no problems as he strode forward and soon he was sitting right on the tail of #18 Jason Rosarius and looking for 2nd place. Behind them #54 Zach Harris was also moving up and had worked his way around Lilley into 4th. Halfway in the race was the signal for Sergi to make his move, and so with a tap to the rear of Rosarius that sent the 2nd place man high he found the lane he needed to accelerate through and set off after Bass. This charge was soon halted once a great race between Poole, #121 Andy Leserra and Murphy saw Poole spinning out of turn 4, ending her race and bringing out the pace truck.

The restart put Sergi immediately behind Bass on the 2nd row and, after making short work of Rosarius, the front two cars were nose-to-tail. With the laps running out Sergi tried every move in the book to find a way past, but Bass was keeping his cool and making his truck very wide. One last move out of turn 4 saw Sergi set himself up for a drag race for the win, but Bass had just too much speed and held on by a nose as the two cars crossed the line, with Harris well placed in 3rd ahead of Rosarius and Murphy.

As with the Pro Truck race the first lap of the Strictly Stocks saw spins for two of the cars, #51 Wes Railing and # Shane Setorus. Railing would put this behind him to quickly get to the front and build an unassailable lead while Setorus would suffer all kinds of handling problems that would ultimately lead to his retirement. By the end of the race Railing confirmed another win to add to his 2010 haul, just beating out a charge by the improving #8x Luis Guillen Jr. and #00 Steve Daniels.

The Boys Were Back In Town

By Razpewton/ Track Webmaster, photographer and Philanthropist

North Florida Speedway was once again entertained by the high-octane performance of the Florida Mini Sprints as they swarmed around the track at insanely high speeds while executing tight-formation maneuvers. Their precision driving made for some intense racing excitement as several cars jockeyed for position in their quest for the checkered. In the end however, Steve Crabtree in the # 5 car, out-drove his competitors and crossed the finish in first place.

In the Pure Stock feature, track favorites such as Dave Hess, Tim Odom and Brent Zimmerman dominated the front pack until the last few laps, when Willard Driggers surged ahead and captured the checkered flag. The Street Stocks produced a few bang-up, caution flags and provided Michael Moore in the 65w with his first win ever, much to the delight of many excited fans. The Box Stocks yielded a first time winner as well, with Robert O’Neil capturing his first checkered flag, trophy and bragging rights for the night’s victory. It is very likely we will be seeing more of Robert in Victory Lane in the very near future.

The thunderous roar of the Open Wheeled Modifieds rocked the grandstands with their usual heart-thumping entrance and went on to provide much of the night’s dramatic interaction. Henry Hall in car # 131 blasted down the straight-aways, with Chip and Kyle Owen in hot pursuit, along with Jeff Sweeney and Ronnie Chance not far behind. As these five, fearless combatants battled for position, Jamie Carter in the number 15 car maintained his lead over the field with some outstanding driving and flawless execution. His competitors were counting on the one mistake that would yield the lead and give them the edge, but that moment never came. He crossed the finish line well ahead of the second placed car and experienced the thrill of Victory with a trophy and first place prize money.

North Florida Speedway will be hosting more exciting dirt racing action on May 29, 2010. They will feature the National Late Models, Pure Stocks, Sportsmans and Limited Mods.  Additionally, May 29th is Driver Trading Card Night. There will be door prizes and drivers giving away trading cards to their fans. For more information visit www.northfloridaspeedway.com.

TIMELY CAUTION HELPS BOBBY BLAKE TO SECOND OWM WIN OF THE YEAR AT AUBURNDALE SPEEDWAY

by Dave Westerman

Race drivers are often asked how much “luck” plays a part in their sport. Saturday night at Auburndale Speedway, Bobby Blake used a very well-timed caution flag to score his second Open Wheel Modified feature of the year in front of yet another big crowd.

Keith Lilley and Shawn Harper won the heat races for the 19 cars entered for the nights’ Modified competition, but it would not be a good feature race for either driver. The pair tangled on the opening lap in turn three causing a wild melee that saw several cars bruised and bent. Harper took his car to the pits for repairs along with Josh Todd who had to replace a flat right rear tire.

Both drivers made it back out for the restart, but Harper now found himself going from the pole position to the rear of the restart line-up. With the inside row moving up a position, that now put Bobby Blake on the pole with Lilley on the outside front row.

Blake zipped to the lead as Lilley fought to maintain the high line. This time it was Colin Cabre drifting into Lilley in the exact same spot as the first incident happened. Again, Lilley went for a spin, but this time no one else received any damage and a third complete restart was called for.

This time a full lap would be completed before things went awry again… and again it was Lilley involved as he slid high off turn four, collided with Raymond Lovelady and went sliding full-speed into the infield. Lilley’s car struck the Elkins Automotive push truck but fortunately no one was injured. Lilley’s car had the rear end shoved to the side and he was done for the night while the push truck was badly damaged and needed a tow home at the end of the evening.

On the restart, Blake began to set the pace with James Wilkins in tow as the pair sped away from third-running Cabre. Action continued under green until Harper looped his mount in turn two on lap 14. Blake continued to set the pace with Wilkins all over him. On lap 25, Wilkins drove by Blake on the outside to take the lead only to see the caution flag out for a tangle between Eddie Hartin and Ken Lawrence in turn two.

For the restart, the field reverted back to the running order from lap 24 place a relieved Blake back in the lead. Wilkins kept up his charge but things were changing behind the lead duo as Travis Roland and James Wright III both got by Cabre and closed on the front pair.

Wilkins tried his best but had to settle for a close second to Blake who won his second Modified race of the year after taking the checker on opening night this year. Only one driver, Lilley, was able to win two OWM features in all of 2009, now Blake and Kyle Bookmiller have already turned the trick in 2010.

Action continued right to the checker as Wright passed Roland for third on the final lap. Roland settled for fourth with point leader Wayne Morris fifth. Rounding out the top ten were Von Pope, Kevin Macy, Harold Crooms, Cabre and Harper. As a testament to the quality of the field, once again all cars running finished on the lead lap of the 40 lap feature.

The Sportsman feature race was very un-sportsmanlike in the early going with caution flags flying numerous times before the first three laps could be completed with many cars suffering body damage and a few left “dragging their tails.”

Once things settled down, first heat winner Mark Medeiros settled into the lead with Dave Dunkin and second heat winner Bart Weatherford in tow. Weatherford eventually got by Dunkin for second but Medeiros was up to the task and led all the way for his second win of the year with Weatherford a very close runner-up. Dunkin held on for third trailed by Brett Jenkins and Chris Lewellen.

The Mini Cup feature was a much tamer affair than last time out as Harold Crooms won his second straight 25 lap headliner.

Crooms and Sam Scott won the heats but Scott never got a chance to challenge as he slapped the front stretch wall on lap three and retired from the race. From that point Crooms was on cruise-control as he easily topped Rick Ragan and Georgia’s John Beach who were the only two cars within a half-lap of him. Tyler Scofield was fourth and Rick Cline, Jr. took fifth spot.

The Legend Car feature saw some wild late race action, but it was all well behind winner Gerald White, Jr. as he took his fourth win of the year. Just two cautions slowed the event for minor incidents. Justin Brown led the opening 16 laps before giving way to White who drove off from the field at that point.

Jake Perkins would ultimately end up second followed by Tyler Smith, Mason Ketterman and Brown. Heat race wins went to Brown and Smith.

Heat winner Jeff Lacy spun out in turn two while leading the V-8 Bomber feature handing the lead and eventual win to Larry Chumney II. Point leader Josh Borem was second while Lacy got back to third at the finish. Matt Johns and Gene Harrison were fourth and fifth.

Bandolero racing saw the Bibeau family back in action and they scored a one-two finish as son Coty topped dad Mark. Cameron White was third ahead of Teddy Lively, Daniel Conlin, Sr. and Andy Metz.

Heather Guy shook off a balky engine to top the Kids Club feature over Dakota Hunt, Megan Gosselin and Brandon Guy.

Volusia Speedway Honors the Military with Five Divisions

by VSP Media

BARBERVILLE, FL- The racers and fans at Volusia Speedway Park got a break last Saturday night as a pause in the schedule allowed for a weekend off from racing, and when they returned this Saturday it was with a renewed focus and determination, that led to high quality racing.  Fans saw action from the Daytona Dodge Chrysler Late Models, the Taylor Racing Products Sportsman Division, the Daytona Sportswear Street Stocks, the Amsoil Synthetic Lubricants Thunder Stocks, and VSP’s own 4 Cylinder Challengers, as everyone paid special tribute to our fighting forces on Volusia Speedway Park’s Armed Forces Night.

Over the past few outings Mike Tovet has made some waves in the Daytona Sportswear Street Stocks, but some time off seemed to refresh others who needed to win, so Tovet found himself following instead of leading.  And from the start of the race, it became evident that Joe Belkey was back, as he grabbed second place from Mike Tovet and began working on the race leader, Cory Hupp.  But Trevor Gamble was right behind him and slipped around for second, and the front four cars began a several lap long mix and match for the top spots.

Belkey, who has suffered through some setbacks as of late, cranked up the determination a few more notches, made his way back to second place, and got alongside Cory Hupp in a battle for the lead.  Belkey won that battle on lap 12 as he overwhelmed Hupp and sprinted out to a sizable lead, as Hupp developed mechanical issues and slowed his pace.  Belkey dominated the rest of the race despite a challenge from Trevor Gamble, and notched his first win of the 2010 racing season. Gamble followed in second place while Mike Tovet claimed the third spot.  Mark Maresca had a good showing in fourth place and “Shady” Grady Christian returned to the field with a fifth place finish.

Many of the racers who normally compete with the Taylor Racing Products Sportsman Division at VSP used their weekend off to venture west to Ocala for a race, and that event left many of them beaten and bruised.  And one of the most damaged of the group was Aaron Barsness, who got tangled in an accident early in that race and left with a mangled race car, which looked greatly healed as it pulled onto the clay at Volusia Speedway Park on Saturday night. But Barsness had to find a way to overcome a hard charging Stanton Mills, who was out of the blocks like a racer possessed, and who hit turn two so hard and fast that the race car actually bicycled.

Mills looked to be too much for Barsness to overtake as the two of them separated themselves from everyone else, but a lack of caution flags allowed the field to spread out and forced the leaders to cope with traffic everywhere on the track.  And as fate would have it, that traffic came into play as Barsness and Mills entered the final five laps of the race.  A slower car caused Mills to lift just long enough for Barsness to get the advantage, and that determined who won the race.

Aaron Barsness recovered from last weekend’s Ocala disaster with a win at VSP, followed by Stanton Mills in second place. Shaun Daugharty, who also suffered through a miserable experience at Ocala, recovered for a third place finish, followed by Chris Day and Kyle Chappell to round out the top five.

The Daytona Dodge Chrysler Late Models put on quite a show for the fans Saturday night as some regulars fell by the wayside and a determined winner drove a wounded race car into Victory Lane.  The race featured one red flag on lap 7, as Hamp Conley executed a cartwheeling crash along the backstretch wall.  While it was both exciting and frightening to see and mangled the race car, Conley thankfully walked away from the carnage.

The race was dominated by Tyler Ivey, who jumped to the front and left everyone else to fight over what was left.  David Clegg patiently worked his way up to the second spot just before Conley’s accident stopped things, and held that position despite Lawton Minchew’s efforts to pass him. but in a rare moment for the veteran driver. Clegg simply overdrove the car in turn 3 and nosed into the inside barrier, which damaged the nose enough that it sent him to the pits for the remainder of the race.  Joe Kump also worked his way into the top three, but had nothing for Ivey until late in the race.

But just as it looked like Tyler Ivey was going to win by an embarrassingly large margin, his car began smoking heavily and his pace slowed.  Ivey kept after it, realizing that he might have enough left to make it to the finish, and that he had such a huge lead that Kump might not catch him.  Each lap the car smoked worse and the engine sounded flatter, but Ivey never relented, and although Kump managed to catch him in the final laps, Tyler Ivey scored a victory as the laps ran out on Joe Kump.  Ivey celebrated in Victory Lane while VSP fire crews made sure that the car would not provide any fireworks, and Joe Kump went to the pits in second place.  Lawton Minchew finished in the third spot followed by Donnie Chappell in fourth and Jeff Phipps in fifth place.

The Amsoil Synthetic Lubricants Thunder Stocks seem to always provide a tough and tumble brand of racing, and Saturday night was more of the same.  Randy Strehle was one of the victims as he and three other cars tangled in turn two, Jim Goempel struggled in the race until his engine expired on lap 6, and Robert Donaly suffered a loose wheel in turn 3 that caused him to limp to the pits, following the tire and rim which went there on its own accord.

And while others were trying to survive , Scott Mooers was totally in control as he led the race from flag to flag.  Matt Schell scored a second place finish thanks to his determined moves throughout the race that helped him climb up from the 13th starting position.  But the big mover of the race was Austin Kirkpatrick, who struggled with mechanical issues in his heat race and wound up calling a friend in the grandstands to come and help fix it before the feature event.  Kirkpatrick finished in the third spot while David Whitt and Richard Calmes finished behind him in fourth and fifth places.

The 4 Cylinder Challengers had something to race for as Astor Recycling provided a $100 bonus to the winner, and from the start it looked like it was once again time for things to change at the top.  Mechanical issues delayed Casey Feaster from staging for the race, and he failed to get onto the track before the green flew.  Shawn Kosier, who dominated the Challengers in the early part of the season, suffered a flat tire and limped into the pits, while Nathan Rhoades and Steven Johnson wound up with damaged cars from contact.

Meanwhile, Tony Laporta was back at the track and looked like his past issues were long gone, as he shot to the lead and stayed there for the win. Larry Langston came on strong and worked his way to second place, but could not find a solution for Laporta and had to settle for the runner up position at the checkers, and James Smith fought his way to a third place finish.  Kevin Dugan was fourth, while Denica Hetznecker overcame some close calls and raced hard for the fifth place finish.  And despite the flat tire early on, Shawn Kosier battled back to salvage sixth place, gaining 13 positions from his original 19th starting position.

Teenagers will be the focus this coming Saturday night at Volusia Speedway Park. “Teen Night” will feature giveaways, prizes, contests, plus special events geared for teens, and there will be a special teen section at the track.  Gates open at 5:30PM on Saturday, May 22nd, with racing at 7:30PM.  For more information, visit www.VolusiaSpeedwayPark.net.
