Mods Highlight A Hot One at Ocala

OCALA, FL- The hottest day of the year so far ushered in the racers and fans to the historic Ocala Speedway on Friday night, and set the tone for hot action from the Colortyme Rentals Modifieds, Ocala’s Sportsman Division, the Tee Pee Tire Hobby Stocks, the Amsoil Synthetic Lubricants V8 Thunder Stocks, and the Gladiators.  A thunderstorm north of the track eventually cooled the air, put on quite a light show, and appeared to be moving toward the track.  But although a drop or two was reported as it blew in on the wind, it never had any effect on the racing except to make the night far more comfortable.

The Colortyme Modifieds got off to a rather rocky start with a multi car pile up in turn one, but everyone recovered from that incident and put on quite a race.  Garrett Stewart won his heat and had the pole for the feature race, and managed to lead the opening laps until Chip Owen began working him over.  Owen would snatch the lead away on lap 4 and hold it, but Jeff Mathews was coming fast and had his sights set on the #1 car at the front.  Mathews wrestled the lead away on lap 8 and held it despite repeated challenges from Chip Owen, earning himself a win.  Chip Owen would take second place behind Mathews as Kyle Owen followed Chip for third place.  Kyle Bronson and Roger Crouse rounded out the top five finishers.

Kevin Mills had the points lead going into this weekend’s Sportsman feature race, but mechanical issues had Mills sidelined by the time the race began.  So with Stanton Mills on the pole the green flag unleashed a hard charging Danny Vogel who wasted no time in bumping Mills back to second place and taking the point.  From that point nobody could touch Vogel, and he cruised to an easy victory.  Stanton Mills was tough, but settled for second place, while Augie Burttram never really found the handle on the 58 car and finished in third place.  David Ponton placed fourth, while Dewey Hall scored the fifth place finish.

Dean Jarvis and Heath Walker have become rivals of sorts with the Tee Pee Tire Hobby Stocks, but misfortunes on the track sent both of those competitors to the pits and opened the door for others to steal the spotlight.  After some early contact gave Bubba Christian’s machine a damaged nose, Christian began a deliberately patient climb through the field toward the front as Joe Boyd enjoyed leading the everyone around the track.  Daniel Miller Jr. would enter the fray and give Joe Boyd plenty to worry about, but would end up in contact with Kevin Durden in turn 4.  That incident would send Durden to the pits with a flat, and later Miller would tangle with Joe Boyd and end up in the wall, which sent him to the pits on a hook.

That opened the door for Bubba Christian, who charged to the front and held on for a win.  Brian Jerrels would make a late charge to claim second place while Tommy Ausburn followed in the third spot.  William Edwards avoided trouble and placed fourth, while Joe Boyd slipped to fifth after his incident with the 99.

The Amsoil Synthetic Lubricants V8 Thunder Stocks never fail to produce excitement when they hit the clay, and this Friday was no exception.  Scott Mooers rocketed to the early lead and looked tough to tame, and Michael Stalnaker was on the move early as he picked his way toward the front.  Polesitter Chris Shea would end up sideways in turn 2 and collect Mike McDonald and Chris Watson, which ended Watson’s quest for the night.  Stalnaker grabbed the lead away from Mooers on lap 6 and Mooers fell to 3rd before mechanical issues parked the 10 car later in the race.

After struggling with his own mechanical gremlins in recent races, Michael Stalnaker over came all of that and notched another Amsoil V8 Thunder Stock win.  Following Stalnaker across the line was Eddie Kilbury, who had been relegated to the rear of the field and fought his way back through the pack for second place.  Gordon Cade had a strong night that resulted in a third place finish, while Austin Kirkpatrick could not repeat his winning ways from last time out and settled for fourth place.  Chris Shea battled his way from a 17th starting position to round out the top five.

Ocala’s Gladiator Division has produced some very competitive racing as of late, and this Friday was no different.  Kyle morse started from the pole but was swallowed up by the field as the green flag waved and Casey Feaster shot to the lead.  Right behind Feaster was Devin Walker, who made some gutsy outside moves in an attempt to gain an advantage, but Feaster held his ground.  Walker eventually overdrove the car in his attempts to get around Feaster, allowing Steven Johnson to get position inside and send him back to third place.  Then things got worse as Walker’s car suffered a suspension failure in the rear end and left on a hook.

That left Casey Feaster in control, but after some rubbing and bumping along the way Matt Shea came blasting into the top three late in the race. David Ladrie had driven a solid race but fell victim to Shea in the final laps, as Shea then went to work on catching Feaster.  But unfortunately for Chris Shea, he was out of laps and time and Casey Feaster scored the victory.  Shea followed in second place, while David Ladrie went home with a trophy and a milestone in the form of a third place finish. Steven Johnson placed fourth, while Jerry Taylor recovered from all sorts of contact, spins, and misfortune, to finish fifth.

Friday, June 18th, brings “Father Mows Best” lawnmower racing to Ocala Speedway as some lucky dads will square off during intermission and battle with real lawnmowers.  The Late Models will be on the schedule, plus fans will see action from the Tee Pee Tire Hobby Stocks, the Mini Stocks, and the Gladiators.  For more information on next week’s racing action, visit www.OcalaSpeedway.com.

COLPRITT TOPS STREET STOCKS – GULLETT GETS 1ST SCRAMBLER WIN AT AUBURNDALE SPEEDWAY

by Dave Westerman

Once again Auburndale Speedway played host to another large group of fans who braved hot, steamy weather conditions to enjoy yet another great night of racing highlighted by the School Bus Figure 8’s.

The Street Stock class continues to easily provide some of the best competition week in and week out. The feature race took three tries to finally get a full lap in with the second attempt finding Matt McCrary into the backstretch wall. McCrary returned to the line-up after replacing a tire but had to start from the scratch position and dropped out just a few laps into the race.

Dave Colpritt out-ran heat winner Jeff Waterman into turn one and would set the pace the entire way as, once the race did get going, it ran straight through from green to checker. Colpritt did not have it easy though as James Wright III and Kyle Peters ran him hard the entire distance. On the final lap, Wright bumped Colpritt’s car and got him loose. Wright drove alongside and the pair crossed the stripe in a near dead heat with Colpritt declared the victor by a scant inch.

For Colpritt it was win number four on the year with Wright and Peters getting the place and show spots. Waterman took fourth and Josh Todd was fifth.

After Jason Rendell was sent off the track for a persistent fuel leak, heat winner Mike Sweet ran off and hid in the Modified Mini Stock feature for his second win of the year. Brandon McSwain claimed second trailed by Drew Carter, Dennis Jones and Bruce Anderson.

Best moment of the night came when Kim Gullett took the checkered flag for her first-ever win in the Scrambler division. After winning the heat, the 15-year-old high school student led all the way in the feature race holding off first a determined challenge from Richard Brown, then a late race effort from fellow lady driver Ashton Hunt as the girls would eventually scored a 1-2 finish.

Brown came home third followed by Chad Cutting and Richie Acres. Acres’ drive to fifth came after a lap five tangle with Bryan Tyre that sent Acres to the pits to change a tire. Tyre, who had climbed to within two points of point leader Gullett, lost ground as he was forced out of the event.

Fred Harrison, Jr. was back in victory lane again in the Mini Stocks as he won the heat then led every lap of the feature. The race was slowed by just one caution for debris as Harrison easily led point leader Chris Spring to the line.

Marilyn McCrary was running third coming to the checker but her engine expired and she spun in her own oil coming off turn four. Everyone else managed to snake through with Chris Narramore, Sr., Dwight Ryals, Jr. and Shawn Jenkins taking third through fifth. However, both Narramore and Jenkins were found to have too much forward weight in their FWD machines and were disqualified. That moved Ryals into third and McCrary to fourth with Scott Russ awarded the fifth spot.

The V-8 Bomber feature was a crazy one full of caution flags and crazy driving. James Wright, Sr. was leading when he had to go to the pits with a flat tire during a yellow flag on lap five. Undaunted, Wright came back to pass Gene Harrison on lap eleven, pacing the remaining laps for the win. Preston Davis came on late to secure second followed by Harrison, Kevin Barton and Willie Lacey. Wright also won the heat.

Robert Aaron zipped by early leader Buddy Kessler and held off the pack to win the School Bus Figure Eight race. Despite several close calls, the race was red-flagged just once for a brief period to remove debris from the track. Trailing Aaron to the checker was Danny Taylor while Kessler held on for third in front of Dave Ross and Gary Swing.

Heather Guy topped the Kids Club feature over Megan Gosselin and Dakota Hunt.

Next Saturday night, June 12th, the Auburndale Trucks return to action along with the Sportsman cars, Street Stocks, Mini Stocks, V-8 Bombers, Legends and Bandeleros. Races start at 7 PM. For more information call 863-551-1131 or log on to www.auburndalespeedwy.com.

Josh Williams Wins Pro Trucks & Aaron Williamson Wins Sportsman 35 Lap Event

By Bill Green, Announcer Punta Gorda, FL

Special 35-Lap events for both Sportsman and Pro Trucks, had lots of fans showing up after the temperatures started to fall from the high of 98 degrees in southern Florida. As racers and crews drank gallons of water to stay hydrated, and fans enjoyed the shade of all the newly installed palm trees, track officials were looking forward to a great night of racing on Florida’s southern most weekly race track.

Heat race action really got everyone’s attention when Kelli Burns, fresh off her 16 th Birthday and racing in her very first Pro Truck event ever, Heat #1, lost control on the back stretch and slammed hard into the outside wall just before the turn 3 entrance to the track. Her green #4 truck came to a stop in turn-3 and pieces of it were strewn for some 150 feet. Kelli complained of neck pain to the first responders on the scene and the call was made for a through check over at hospital for the young driver. (more…)

Troy DeCaire Wins TBARA at New Smyrna

by Marty Little

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. – Troy DeCaire, fresh off a sixth place finish in the Little 500, paced all 30 laps to win the TBARA winged sprint car feature event Saturday night at New Smyrna Speedway.

DeCaire hustled into the lead from his outside front row starting spot but things went all wrong as the 15 car field worked lap one. Dude Teate’s mount suddenly lost power and he was tagged by Joey Augilar with Ben Fritz also involved. A red flag was needed to clean up the mess with the cars of Teate and Aguilar both finished for the evening. Fritz’s mount only suffered minor damage and was able to continue.

When the green flag waved again it was all DeCaire aboard George Rudolph’s No. 68 as he expertly worked the paper clip shaped half mile with precision. A yellow flag on lap 23 for a blown engine in Bo Hartley’s mount regrouped the field but there was no stopping DeCaire this night as he motored away at the drop of the green to record his third TBARA main event victory of the season.

Veteran Sonny Hartley drove a steady race to collect runner-up honors over Larry Brazil, Brian Gingras and Tommy Nichols while heat race wins went to D.J. Hoelzle and DeCaire.

The tour next heads to DeSoto Super Speedway on June 19.
