Sanders Wins Modified Thriller at East Bay

By:  Larry Jewett

06/26/2010

Gagel’s Auto Parts Open Wheel Modified point leader Austin Sanders prevailed in an exciting feature to cap off a six-division program as East Bay Raceway Park slammed the door on the month of June.

The night’s action began with the Limited Late Models as John Bradley prevailed for his second feature win. Forrest Gough came from the rear of the field to score a second place, ahead of heat race winner Bob Peterson, Scotty Williams and Dan Darnell. Shane Koperda also scored a heat win.

The Precision Kia of Wesley Chapel Street Stocks saw Donnie Reed go wire-to-wire to pick up his fifth win of the year. He was hounded by Eric Moon and point leader Thomas Pratt, who finished second and third. Jeff Rodgers ran a steady fourth while Buck Woodhouse came up to fifth, despite being sent to the tail after four laps for a turn four incident. Moon, Ron Abney and Collin Kruse claimed preliminaries.

The program was halted for 30 minutes after the Street Stock main due to rain and lightning. When the show resumed, the 4 Cylinder Bombers stepped up to the plate and brought 30 cars out for the start of their 15-lap main. Point leader Kever Raulerson appeared to be on the way to a win when the car suffered issues two laps from the finish. For Elliott Morgan, it was vindication. Morgan was transported from the track two weeks ago after a backstretch wreck, but tonight his race ended in Victory Lane. Michael Eaton picked up second with Troy Dittebrand charging from deep in the field for a third place run. Fourth went Kelli Hill with Gene Gross rounding out the top five. Raulerson, Johnnie Alexander and Roberto Morfin Sr. started their nights with heat wins.

The Florida Old Time Modified race saw a return winner in Tommy Zwally, who scooted to the lead in a battle of ’37 Fords, besting Roger Herbach. Gary Riccio took top honors in the eight-car heat.

The East Bay Sprints rolled out to a track perfectly suited for exciting action. Travis Bliemeister used the pole start to his advantage, sweeping out to the lead. Billy Boyd was his first pursuer, but Boyd was hunted down by Danny Martin Jr. As the field hit lapped traffic, Martin negotiated the situation better, coming out on top at the halfway mark. No one could catch Martin, who powered to a popular win. Bliemeister, Boyd, Tim George, and Rich Pratt (a former Late Model racer making his first East Bay start in a Sprint) rounded out the top five. George and Martin took heat wins.

And then, there were the Modifieds. Buzzie Reutimann moved from the outside of the front row for the early lead with Jeff Mathews in hot pursuit. Austin Sanders jumped to the top of the track and zipped past to grab the lead. Mathews became the aggressor in the chase for the lead with contact between the top two leading to body damage on both cars. Sanders continued to use the top of the track to his advantage, but had to work the magic on several restarts. Reutimann slipped past Mathews in time for the last restart, which saw Mathews advance before passing. Even though Mathews crossed second, he was scored fourth in the final tally, gaining second after spinning Reutimann on the race to the finish. Sanders scored his fourth feature win, a hard fought and popular victory. Reutimann was credited with second, ahead of Roger Crouse, Mathews and Bobby Dixon. Mathews and Sanders were winners of the heat events.

ASA Sanctioned racing returns to East Bay Raceway Park on Saturday, July 10th, 2010 with the start of the Red Hot Summer Series. Racing divisions include Limited Late Models, Precision Kia of Wesley Chapel Street Stocks, Outlaw 4s, motorstats.com 4 Cylinder Bombers, Kid’s Bike races and Fan Participation Races. For more information, go to www.eastbayracewaypark.com or call the track office.

Grill wins Race #3 at Five Flags Speedway

Flashbacks washed over Augie Grill at Five Flags Speedway on Friday. The uneasiness caused him to squirm a little his Super Late Model seat.

The two-time Snowball Derby champion lost the Blizzard Series season opener when on a late caution he began leaking fluid, putting a sudden and dramatic end to his night. When another came out on Lap 91 during the U.S.A. Digital 100 on Friday, Grill was bound to not let history repeat itself.

Lesson learned, as Grill made a dominant return to Victory Lane. “That first race was heartbreak,” said Grill, who was dominant from qualifying and thereafter. “I didn’t smell in the car anything this time. I thought we’d be all right when everybody got back out. Fortunately, I was able to pull away.” He drove away from the youngster Chase Elliott, who won here last month and unofficially took the Blizzard points lead after finishing as the runner-up.

Elliott led a good portion of the race early, but could not close the door when Grill came barreling down on him in the middle of the race. “I worked as hard as I could, but Augie was too tough,” the 14-year-old said. “It’ll be our goal from here on out to win every week.”

On a night full of bright pink, purple, green, orange and more fireworks, yellow was the color that stole the show at Five Flags. An inaugural competition yellow promised to add a bit of drama to the Blizzard Series. Yet, as expected, it had little effect on the usual cast of characters that drive up front. “Basically, it worked out like it would’ve had everybody pitted on Lap 80, you know,” Grill said. “It was nothing too different, except I didn’t have to beat everybody out in the pits.”

He had his white No. 112 running on all cylinders, even though he didn’t make it easy on himself. Fastest in qualifying, Grill partook in the other Blizzard Series adjustment Friday ? a field invert. On the roll of the die, he figuratively rolled the dice by slamming the die into the asphalt. The gamble did not pay off and the field was set to an eight-car invert. It didn’t matter on this night.

“We didn’t have the car we liked to have on the last race,” Grill said. “We worked on it and got it back to like it was for the first race. We had a really good car tonight.” Among Grill, the fireworks and the series changes, the night’s other highlight was an ultra-competitive battle between Bubba Pollard and Casey Smith late in the race. The pair were door-to-door just prior to Lap 85 as they battled for third and stayed that way for several laps. They sandwiched around Eddie Mercer, down a lap, before Smith finally passed Pollard at the start of Lap 90.

Sportsmen
Stevie Mercer just would not be denied. Starting fifth, Mercer was determined to return to steer his black No. 72 back to Victory Lane. The veteran got his wish, forcing the issue all night to pick up his first win since earlier this season.

“These cars don’t know it’s an asphalt track,” Mercer said. “Loose cars, trading paint, that’s how we like to race. We’ve been in a dry spell. It feels like we’re getting back there.” He topped series points leader Steve Buttrick along the way, as Mercer and Buttrick ran away from the rest of the 12-car field for most of the 25 laps. Mercer passed Buttrick on Lap 14 and never looked back. Not even lapped traffic late in the race could put the brakes on Mercer’s runaway night.

“The car was good, but it was not enough to get by (Mercer),” Buttrick said.

Bombers:
Curtis Faircloth continues to be a thorn in the side of Mike Goraum. For the second time in three races, the Pace native topped the series points leader to find his way to Victory Lane. The bad news for the rest of the Bombers? Faircloth seems destined to be a thorn in more than just Goraum’s side. That was clear from the outset when Faircloth got a good run as the green flag dropped yet, but his hard driving spooked Tracy Soles in the No. 6 and caused a quick caution.

Super Stocks
Randy Thompson continued to pad his series points lead with another victory. Two weeks after his first career victory, Earl Polk finished as the runner-up. Chris Cotto rounded out the top three despite early car troubles.

Racers Battle a Full Moon at Ocala

by BJ Cavin- Ocala Speedway Media

Photos Courtesy of rewingphotos.comOCALA, FL-  Those who ventured to Ocala Speedway on Friday night saw a variety of racing action for five different divisions, and also everything for the best to the worst as far as the races were concerned.  Racers tend to be a superstitious lot, and as the summer sun set in the west, an ominous full moon rose over turn two.  From that point on it was either success of failure on the track, and while the successes were thrilling, so were some of the failures.

The Tee Pee Tire Hobby Stocks provided the first feature event of the night, and quickly set the standard to beat.  Mike Eubanks had a less than wonderful starting position, but as soon as the opening green waved he was powering his way toward the front of the pack.  Dean Jarvis had wasted no time in taking the lead, but later was overcome by Jody Wells, who looked like the car to beat.  Bubba Christian also was strong and made his way forward to challenge Wells, but spun in turn 2 as he and Mike Eubanks battled for second place.
