Orlando SpeedWorld Rained Out

Orlando, FL (July 30, 2010) Mother Nature called the races at Orlando SpeedWorld about 8:30 pm when she opened the doors and let it all come out. The TBARA race schedule for last night was cancelled. The next scheduled date for the TBARA Sprint Cars at Orlando is October 1st.

Storms Fail To Dampen Racing At Ocala

OCALA, FL- Any betting person would have put money on a rainout for Friday night at Ocala Speedway had they been anywhere near the place at around 5 PM that afternoon, but despite a brief heavy downpour plus plenty of thunder and lightning, the water truck still needed to be called to duty before four divisions could hit the clay. The Colortyme Rentals Modifieds, Tee Pee Tire Hobby Stocks, Amsoil V8 Thunder Stocks, and the Gladiators replaced nature’s storminess with their own brand of rock and roll, and kept the crowd cheering throughout the night.

The Tee Pee Tire Hobby Stocks were anointed the division to open feature racing, and Daniel Miller Jr wasted no time in declaring that the 99 machine was the one to beat. While Cory Hupp gave him a fight over it, Miller grabbed the lead and fended off Hupp’s efforts while points leader Dean Jarvis sparred with a few others behind them. Jarvis had his hands full with a determined Philip Brown, who came to Ocala speedway looking to run at the front but had to get past Jarvis in order to get there. Meanwhile Heath Walker was fighting to get into the top five and finally achieved that status, then immediately developed issues on the back stretch that ended his night. (more…)

KEITH LILLEY ALL THE WAY IN AUBURNDALE MODIFIEDS – DAUBACH GETS FIRST SPORTSMAN WIN

There was rain all around Auburndale Speedway Saturday afternoon and early evening, but none of the wet stuff fell directly at the track allowing for a full night of great competition.

The Open Wheel Modifieds were back in action and in qualifying it was James Wright III the fastest, turning a lap at 14.302 seconds topping the 14.392 lap of Von Pope. Keith Lilley, Kyle Bookmiller and Travis Roland rounded out the quickest five in time trials.

The re-draw for the 40 lap feature saw Lilley on the pole with Pope outside of him. Roland and Harold Crooms made up row two while fast-timer Wright lined up fifth with Bookmiller in sixth.

Lilley wasted little time grabbing the early lead. Pope gamely tried to make the outside line work but had to settle in third spot behind Lilley and Roland. Wright zipped by Pope and took third on lap nine as Roland was putting constant pressure on Lilley. By lap 15, Wright had caught the leaders and the race was on.

The first caution flag flew on lap 25 for a two car altercation coming off turn two involving Crooms and Bookmiller and both continued. On the restart, Lilley missed a shift but was able to keep the lead along with avoiding piling up the cars behind him. The second yellow flag came out on lap 29 for a John Markovich spin.

Lilley, Roland and Wright continued to run bumper to bumper with some good, clean racing as they left the rest of the field in their wake. Lap 35 saw the final caution as Crooms took a wild slide off turn four into the infield grass.

Lilley, who has had nothing but bad luck in the Modifieds this year, got the monkey off his back with a wire-to-wire win and praised Roland’s clean driving in his victory lane interview. Roland backed up his June win with a strong second while Wright grabbed yet another third place finish. Pope came home fourth while Tommy Schnader took fifth spot. Completing the top ten were Bookmiller, Johnnie Newsome, Bobby Blake, Shain Held and Markovich. All 15 starters were running at the finish.

There’s a new “hot dog” in the Sportsman class as young Lance Daubach of Plant City simply put on a show in taking his first-ever win in the class in just his second time out in his new racer.

This one was a fantastic race from start to finish with the entire field running side-by-side the opening three laps. Heat winner Richard Elkins, Jr.

led the first two laps before a very strong Brett Jenkins took over on lap three. Daubach got by Elkins for second on lap five but was a good distance behind the leader.

Daubach began to eat away at Jenkins’ lead while Elkins and point leader Dave Dunkin started a crowd-pleasing dogfight for third. Daubach was flying and zoomed past Jenkins for the top spot on lap 20. Three laps later, the only caution of the race flew for a tangle involving Josh Todd and Mark Medeiros. Brandon Duchscherer slowed with a flat tire just before the restart to keep the yellow out but was able to return again before the green flag flew.

Daubach had no trouble scooting to the win while Jenkins finished a solid second. Elkins will have to take a hammer to beat out the body damage on his car from Dave Dunkin’s repeated attempts to snatch third spot toward the end of the race, but he held on to the position ahead of Dunkin and Jerrell Cook.

Gerald White, Jr. added to his point lead with a green to checker victory in the Legend Car feature. Tyler Smith started sixth and gamely worked his way to second, but with the race running without a caution flag, Smith had no chance of catching the fleet White. Jake Perkins took the checkered flag in third followed by Seth Adams and Justin Brown. Lynn Wiles, Mason Ketterman, Devin McLeod, Matt Larmore and Dakota Baggette rounded out the top ten. Heats went to White and Perkins.

The Street Stocks ran a rare all-green flag race and it was Bobby Mobley leading every lap for his second win of the season. Dave Colpritt kept Mobley honest in the early going and fell back a few car lengths at the checker but still finished a solid second. James Wright III picked up his second third place finish of the evening while point leaders Matt McCrary and Jeff Waterman were fourth and fifth. The rest of the top ten were Jerrell Cook, Kyle Hall, Cody McDuffie, Robert Crisp and Richie Shepherd. Mobley also won the heat race.

Fred Harrison, Jr. returned to victory circle in the Mini Stocks leading every lap as yet again another feature race went all the way without a yellow flag. Point leader Chris Spring was a distant second ahead of Jason Swilley, Mark Wells and Shawn Jenkins.

The V-8 Bombers saw Gene Harrison snare his second win of the year in wire-to-wire fashion in a race slowed twice, once for a big-time blown engine in Buddy Phillips, Jr.’s car. Harrison topped Larry Chumney II, Preston Davis, newcomer Frank Pierce and Jeff Lacey.

Teddy Lively added to his win streak in the Bandoleros as he led most of the way to make it four straight victories. Cameron White took second with young Jake Hunter taking a third in just his second week out. Heat winner Andy Metz was fourth ahead of Michael Held and new driver Dustin Turnage, Jr.

Next Saturday night, July 31st, it’s Family Fun Night featuring a Demolition Derby, 100 lap Enduro race, Figure 8’s, 4 Cyl. Street Stocks Create A Sensation at VSP

BARBERVILLE, FL- Were it not for the excellent work of the Volusia Speedway Park track crew, a Saturday afternoon downpour could have washed away five divisions of racing scheduled for Saturday Night. But thanks to their efforts, fans enjoyed a night of fast paced action from the Daytona Sportswear Street Stock Sensation, plus the Daytona Dodge Chrysler Jeep Late Models, the Budweiser Modifieds, the Taylor Racing Products Sportsman Division, plus the 4 Cylinder Challengers.

The Street Stock Sensation awards $1000 to the winner of the Daytona Sportswear Street Stock Division in a 25 lap dash for the cash, and a full field of determined racers took aim at the track and each other in order to get it. Grady Christian and Mike Tovet exchanged the early lead as they tussled over the top spot and Kevin Durden followed, but just short of the halfway point Tovet developed problems and slowed, and Durden happily stepped up and applied the heat to “Shady” Grady in his place.

Billy Medders had moved into the third spot and was giving Durden as much grief as Durden could dish out to Christian, when on lap 17 things got a bit dicey at the front of the pack as they entered turn one. A move to clear lapped traffic, coupled Durden’s determined move to get around Christian, resulted in contact, and Grady Christian ended up with the short end of the deal against the inside wall with steam pouring from the 36 machine. But “Shady” Grady was not finished as he managed to refire the car, drove to the pits, then rejoined the field at the back of the pack.

Durden wasted zero time in declaring his superiority on the restart, immediately expanding his lead until yet another multi car fracas in turn 3 all but claimed Grady Christian yet again. And try as he might, Billy Medders had nothing for Kevin Durden, as Durden collected the winner’s check, plus a $100 bill courtesy of Astor Recycling. Billy Medders claimed the second spot, while Philip Brown was a very respectable third place finisher. Cory Hupp hung tough for the fourth place spot, and Trevor Gamble returned to Volusia Speedway Park after a lengthy absence to finish fifth.

Joe Kump held the front position as the Daytona Dodge Chrysler Jeep Late Models began their feature race, but Donnie Chappell made quick work of him on lap 1 and took early control of the race by setting a blistering pace. But by the mid point of the race Ivedent Lloyd had given himself the green light and was all over Chappell as Darrell Padgett followed in the third spot, as both quickly erased any gap that Chappell had created between himself and the rest of the front runners. Also on the hunt for the front pack was Lawton Minchew, and “Chewy” began to gnaw at the rear spoiler of Joe Kump’s machine as Kump had slipped to third place.

As Ivedent Lloyd threw everything he had at Donnie Chappell in an effort to get around him, Chappell’s car began spewing fluid from the overflow as the engine over heated. Lloyd kept the heat on as Chappell pegged the throttle and prayed that the car would last to the finish, but by lap 12 the spewing had stopped, and on lap 13 so did the engine. Chappell ended up against the inside wall in turn 4 with no water left in the 25 machine to boil out after the impact. Ivedent Lloyd was in complete control from there, easily outpacing Darrell Padgett for the win as Joe Kump held off Lawton Minchew to take the third spot. Barry Sheffield followed Minchew to the checkers to round out the top five.

Jeff Mathews had been furiously chasing Jamie Carter for the Budweiser Modified points lead, and so Carter was nothing but pleased to see that Mathews was MIA for Saturday’s events at VSP. In fact, that was Carter’s signal to go for broke, as he claimed the pole, then outpaced everyone else to the checkers with ease. Behind him Larry Burkins had to work hard to get the better of Dale Murray, but Burkins was up to the task as he claimed second place and bumped Murray to third. Kent Corbin had to overcome some earlier woes to place fourth, and Josh Sanford kept it together for a fifth place night.

Saturday was a very bad night for some heavy hitters in the Taylor Racing Products Sportsman Division, and probably the most upset was Shaun Daugharty, whose new car wound up trashed in a heat race incident that also claimed David Clegg’s P4 entry, and removed all competitive edge from Steve Shead’s machine. And while Daugharty and Clegg never got to start the feature race, Danny Vogel shot himself in the foot by being tardy to staging, and joining the field after they were on the track. That mistake got Vogel relegated to the rear from what would have been a spot on the outside of the second row, and the back side of slower cars were all that Vogel saw once the green flag dropped.

Meanwhile Aaron Barsness had an excellent night to offset the woes of the others, jumping into the lead early, dominating the event to the finish, and leaving the rest for everyone else to fight over. Barsness’ only competition came from Matt McGillivray, who had an excellent night but had to settle for second place in the end. Collin Wright was also in line for a good showing, as he claimed the third spot while Dan Lane Sr.raced his way into the top five with a fourth place run at the checkers. And Chris Day held off David Showers and Danny Vogel to close out the top five.

Being the points leader at two of Florida’s top dirt tracks might lead fans to think that Casey Feaster is the dominant force in 4 Cylinder Challenger racing, but Feaster has taken quite a few lumps along the way, and Saturday was no exception. Feaster had mechanical issues and never got going from his second row starting position, as the Challenger Division saw Larry Langston rocket to the front after Denica Hetznecker failed to hold the top spot, and Tony Laporta and James Sullivan followed in later laps. Langston was over and above the rest on the night, outrunning Tony Laporta to the checkers while Sullivan finished behind them. But Sullivan’s car ran into problems in post race tech, leading to a disqualification and moving Casey Feaster up to the third place spot. Jordan Myers was fourth, while Nathan Rhoades wound up in the fifth spot.

Volusia Speedway Park’s racers and staff are taking a well deserved break on Saturday, July 31st, so there will be no racing this coming weekend at the south’s fastest half mile. Racing returns to VSP on August 7th as the long awaited 3rd Annual Wiener Nationals pits “hotdog” against “hotdog” in a high speed dogfight on the VSP front stretch. In addition to the Daschund races, fans will see action from the Budweiser Modifieds, the Taylor Racing Products Sportsman Division, the Daytona Sportswear Street Stocks, the Amsoil Thunder Stocks, and the 4 Cylinder Challengers. Nobles Holds Off “The Professor” at Ocala

OCALA, FL- With Tropical Storm Bonnie moving across Florida to the south the weather forecasters had seemed sure that at least some rainfall would hamper things at the historic Ocala Speedway on Friday night, but most fans and racers ignored all of that and experienced a near perfect summer evening of exciting action.

In fact, not one drop of rain fell at the track, and the storm to the south generated a cooling breeze from the east, as four exciting divisions took on Ocala’s tricky 3/8ths mile and kept the fans on the edge of their seats. (more…)
