Car Warz on Dirt a HUGE Success at Ocala

by Jimmy Rouse- Ocala Speedway Media

Car Warz was a huge success on Friday, after the washout 2 weeks ago. Most fans came back with rainchecks and a lot more came, leaving the fans with standing room only! Every fan who saw Car Warz got to see one of the craziest things ever.

Car Warz wasn’t the only event, however, as the Gladiators ran to make up a missed race from earlier in 2010. As the cars were lining up on the back stretch, 1 title competitor was fighting time. Casey Feaster showed up, but couldn’t get unloaded in time to start the race. The race started out with Kyle Morse jumping to an early lead; however, he got loose and took his 82 for a spin. After he got it re-fired, he half spun it and was T-boned by Steve Johnson. Casey Feaster was allowed on the track at this point, but at 2 laps down. The race went green from that point on and Matt Shea earned a huge win in his fight for the title. Steve Johnson would finish 2nd, Kyle Morse would rally for 3rd, Kathie Fisher stayed up front all night and took home 4th, and Terry Dunbar was 5th.

The Figure-8 race was the first Car Warz event of the night, and the fans loved it. Lap 1 showed the fans how important brakes are as Jonathan Appleby, an Amsoil V-8 Thunderstocks regular, rear-ended the first 3 cars in line. On lap 9, Greg Bonynge climbed the big mound of dirt near the flagpole and got a roar from the fans. 15 exciting laps were run for the Figure-8, and Michael Cherry won, followed by Jonathan Appleby, Kenny Thornton, Greg Bonynge and David Antis.

The Reverse Race was crazy, to say the least. The drivers took their cars, in reverse, once around the flagpole diamond, and than the whole speedway, to make 1 lap. A couple of minor wrecks left plenty of carnage to race around and Greg Bonynge did it best, taking “The Punisher” to Victory Lane. Kevin Cutrell was 2nd, Howard Allen 3rd, Scott Conover 4th, and Mike Brooks was 5th.

Flagpole racing is the same as the reverse race, just this time going forward. On lap 1, Todd Roberts lost his rear wheel and the sheet metal on the right side, at the same time. When re-entering the front stretch after running through the diamond, you had to be ever watchful of drivers at full speed coming out of 4. Howard Allen would dominate this race, closely followed by Mark Murchie, Jonathan Appleby, Greg Bonynge, and Casey Feaster.

The Boat and Trailer race went crazy when the drivers were told to run ‘the kidney bean’ which is where you go through the infield after turn 4, and re-enter the Speedway over in turn 1. On lap 1, Mike Brooks’ boat fell off right at the exit of turn 4, forcing the racers to navigate around it. As the race continued, the boats rapidly fell apart, leaving debris everywhere. On lap 7, Dave Warner and Ralph Murchie hit the boat left behind by Brooks, but both men continued. On the last lap, Jacob Antis went for broke, and he broke his trailer by spinning and clothes lining the back of an RV that would later be used in the demolition derby. Howard Allen won, followed by Dave Warner, Greg Bonynge, Jacob Antis, and Ralph Murchie.

The Chain Race was an event where the front car would go in reverse, leaving the cars nose to nose. On lap 1, the duo dubbed Sesame Street, broke their chain, along with the 11 and 00 team. On the white flag lap, the Truck Team broke their chain. The ruling from the officials had ‘Sesame Street’ winning because their cars were the only ones running at the end, with the Truck Team in 2nd, and the 11 and 00 were 3rd; however, those results are unofficial.

The Front Wheel Drive Demolition Derby had 7 competitors, but Bill Hindman wasn’t scared. The fans loved seeing cars demolished and it showed with all the roars. Hindman took his car out there and controlled the derby by saving his car and using it when he needed too. Hindman’s night wasn’t over yet, though, and he took his big RV out to the RV Demolition Derby.

Hindman played a cat and mouse game with Kevin Cutrell for the longest time, narrowing it down to the 2 of them during the demolition derby. At the end, Hindman used up the last of his RV to disable Cutrell, and it worked. Both RVs were done on the spot, but because Hindman made contact last, he was declared the winner. The fans went crazy and got what they wanted; a bunch of debris lying around from contact during the races and derbys.

Ocala Speedway will run the first half of the 2 night Sunoco United Dirt Late Model Challenge Series Fall Nationals. Volusia Speedway Park has the second half. Alongside our Late Model drivers will be the Amsoil V-8 Thunderstocks and the Mini Stocks. For more information you can call the Speedway or check out www.ocalaspeedway.com.

Travis Hanson Goes Wire-To-Wire In Super Late Model Win

By Bill Green, FromBehindTheMIC

Punta Gorda, FL – Fans continued to file thru the main grandstand gate as heat races finished and features stated. The excitement filled the air as one of the biggest crowds in the short history of the new owners continued to arrive, car after car, after car. Having over 300 total laps scheduled on the night between heats and features, with the Super Late Models going 100-Laps, starting 21 cars brought folks from as far away as Porth Call, Wales, England.

First up came the Pro-4’s with 15 cars taking the green and Ft. Myers driver Brian Collver continued his great run in 2010, with another win. Second went to points contender Dylan Bigley out of Naples, with fellow Naples driver Paul Richards Sr. coming home third. Fourth would go to Cody Allen of Lehigh Acres and John Balzarano from Naples went into a spin cycle early, to come back to fifth.

Bandoleros had only 4 cars for their 12-lap feature, with Mark Hooven of Orlando coming home with the win. But, second pace finisher Taylor McFadden of Port Charlotte won the bigger prize on the night, as his family presented him with his very own Chevy two door short bed pick-up for his Birthday that was last weekend. Surprising him as he was interviewed on the front stretch for his 2nd place finish. Third went to a another Port Charlotte driver, John Holmes and even as he rolled into the infield with problems, Shaw Hooven was credited with 4th.

Super Stocks battle for every inch with he 09 of Danny Daniels surviving a hard fought feature event for the win. Second went to Shane Leonard, followed closely by Fred Kight third and Bobby Fischer fourth. Fifth went to Donna Bigger.

Outlaw Modifieds are getting close to the end of their season and it showed as two drivers were black flag and DQ‘d for rough driving and retaliation on the track. The winner would be Doug Hopper, holding off long time rival, Tom Meyers, who settled for second. Third went to Arcadia driver Ric Mills, with Craig Sherar fourth and John Gula hanging on for fifth.

Legends saw some great action with Mark Hooven of Orlando getting the clean sweep with the Bandolero win earlier and a Legends victory here. Hooven was followed by Brady Marshall in second, Mitch Verhaagh third, Mike Verhaagh fourth and Mike Fazio finished fifth, but was taken off on the hook after contact after the checkered.

Super Late Models finish, a wild one with Travis Hanson using the great pole position pill draw to go wire-to-wire or the victory. Second went to Steve Dorr of Lakeland, with local star, Dylan Bigley Jr. taking third. Fourth went to young Brian Blum after an early incident that sent him to the rear of the field. Rounding out the top-5 would be Jeff Scofield driving the #6 of David Hart from Bartow, after Scofield’s #21 developed problems after qualifying.

Road Warriors saw 11 cars take the green with Logan Leonard of Cape Coral taking the win. Second would go to a hard charging Rick Reed coming all the way across from Arcadia. Third went to Chris Loney, followed closely by Joey Morales fourth and Jarrett Cornell of N. Ft. Myers finished fifth.

Fab-4 driver Paul Richards Jr out of Naples lap everyone but the top-5 in the time shortened 20-lap feature. Richards went wire-to-wire for the win, leaving Scott Ison to take second a half lap back. Third went to young Kerrington McFadden, with Aaron Hardgrove mustering a fourth place finish for his Birthday. Fifth was a very young Logan Allen, the last car on the lead lap.

Next week it’s Pro Trucks, Rookie Trucks and TQ Midgets, with Sportsman, Dwarf Cars, Road Warriors and the always entertaining Cowboy Cadillac’s in action. Punta Gorda Speedway remains the Grandstand low-price leader in Florida with $10 Adult tickets, with Seniors, Vets & Military members at $8 every week, Children ages 11-17 only $5 and 10 years of age and under FREE! Nobody’s Lower for a Family of 5 or more, anywhere in southern Florida. Call 941-575-RACE for info or visit PuntaGordaSpeedway.com.

“ROCKETMAN” JEFFERSON BLASTS MODIFIED RIVALS AT AUBURNDALE SPEEDWAY

by Dave Westerman

There was a touch of Fall in the air Saturday evening at Auburndale Speedway but it was Wayne “Rocketman” Jefferson who was on fire as he took the victory in the Open Wheel Modified feature in his first start of the year on the quarter-mile.

Bobby Blake scored the win in heat race number one for the Modifieds while James Wright III drove away with heat two. Jefferson, who had to start in the rear of his heat, made a daring three-wide pass between Josh Todd and Jimmy Wilkins to finish second behind Wright and earn the third starting position for the 40-lap feature. Final Points Night Crowns Champions at Volusia

by BJ Cavin- VSP Media

BARBERVILLE, FL-  The racers in all six divisions at Volusia Speedway Park came together on Saturday night in order to close the door on the 2010 racing season, and to recognize those who had overcome the obstacles and become divisional champions.  And while most of the points races had been all but decided coming into the night, it allowed those at the top of the heap to turn it loose and go for wins, rather than play the conservative game in order to secure the big trophy at the season ending banquet.

Joe Kump has held onto the top spot in the Daytona Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram Late Model points standings for a while now, but coming into Saturday’s feature event the Lake Helen racer’s math told him that he needed to finish 12th or better in order to secure a points championship.  Meanwhile Donnie Chappelle had something else to prove coming into the night, as his race team had overcome a season’s worth of shortcomings to emerge as the team to beat down the final stretch.  Both were up to the challenge, as Kump concreted himself into VSP championship history with a fourth place finish, and Chappelle dominated the race to notch another win, plus show that he would be a force to be reckoned with in 2011.  Ivedent Lloyd followed Chappelle for the second spot while Jason Davis wrapped up the third spot.  John Kellum had a strong run and finished in the fifth spot behind Kump. Mavrick Varnadore Breaks Through for East Bay Triumph

By:  Larry Jewett

10/2/2010

The Racecar Engineering Late Model feature defied the  “same old” as a new winner took a place in Victory Lane and it was an exciting journey to get there at East Bay Raceway Park.

16-year-old Mavrick Varnadore finally added his name to the winner’s role with a steady drive that brought the desired results. Mavrick took the lead from Phillip Cobb with five laps remaining after Cobb had picked up the top spot when Travis Varnadore slipped and over the cushion a lap previous. Mavrick’s charge from the ninth starting spot saw steady progress and seized opportunity. The win propelled him into the heart of the point battle with brother Travis and Bryan Bernhardt. The feature top five saw Doug Watson back up his earlier heat win with a second place ion the main. Dennis Williams, Bernhardt and Cobb rounded out the top five. Paul Gibbs also claimed a preliminary. (more…)

The Battles Heat Up

by Jimmy Rouse- Ocala Speedway Media

A crazy night at Ocala Speedway had plenty of action which kept the fans on their feet the entire night. The Late Models returned while the Mini Stocks, Amsoil V-8 Thunderstocks, and Gladiators also raced, trying to gain the advantage in the points. Every fan that showed up got exactly what they came for.

The night started off with the Amsoil V-8 Thunderstocks and it got pretty rough towards the end. Lap 3 got exciting with 4 separate incidents, starting with Austin Stamper climbing the “Danny Miller” tire. Jeff Stalnaker, Jr. stopped on the back straight while Scott Mooers met the front stretch wall, ending his night. However, the biggest incident was Mike Stalnaker and Jason Gamble rubbing and bumping until Gamble ran out of room and tagged the outside wall. Jonathan Gillette decided to excite the fans a couple laps later and his hood came up on the windshield. On lap 15, Timmy Odom climbed the front stretch wall and Chris Shea, the man who had dominated the night, cut a tire. A couple laps later, a huge factor in the race, Mike Stalnaker, heard his engine say ‘goodnight.’ After the fans saw the wrecker get stuck in the infield, the race restarted and Chris Fontaine lost a wheel while running at the front. Oh Canada!!! “The Canuck” Tim Mathieu earned his first career win while Brian Shea got his first 2nd place finish, and Vaughn Woodall got his first top 5 with a 3rd place finish. Chris Shea came back through to 4th and Gordon Cade rounded out the top 5. (more…)
