Monopolizing Half-Miles

CONCORD, NC— Aug. 8, 2017— Two back-to-back shootouts at half-mile dirt ovals await the World of Outlaws Craftsman® Late Model Series at Georgetown Speedway on Aug. 17 and Port Royal Speedway on Aug. 19.

Known as a king of half-miles, Rick Eckert will be looking to piggy-back off of his recent success at Shawano Speedway, where he led flag-to-flag to claim his second Series win in a dominating performance over a hard-charging Chris Madden and Don O’Neal.

While Eckert’s momentum didn’t continue into USA Nationals at Cedar Lake Speedway, he will surely look to revive his fortune in the upcoming Series races. The Outlaws’ first-ever visit to Georgetown Speedway will feature 40 laps and a $10,000 payday, followed by the Series’ return to Port Royal Speedway for the first time in a decade with 50 laps and $10,000 to win.

Both tracks are familiar territory for the Series veteran from York, PA. Eckert claimed a victory at Port Royal Speedway with the Lucas Oil Late Model Series earlier this season. Furthermore, Eckert finished second after a last-lap pass by regional racer Dale Hollidge during a 2016 Ultimate Super Late Model Series event at Georgetown Speedway.

Tickets for the World of Outlaws Craftsman Late Model Series first-ever appearance at Georgetown Speedway on Aug. 17 and the Series return to Port Royal Speedway on Aug. 19 are available now. After the race at Georgetown Speedway, take your ticket stub to Sears Center at Salisbury Mall in Salisbury, MD, spend $20 on Craftsman tools and receive a free Outlaws hat while supplies last. For more information on upcoming Series events visit our website.

Matt Sheppard Scores First Career Ransomville Win at Summer Nationals

Extends Series Win Streak to Three Races

RANSOMVILLE, NY – August 8, 2017 – Matt Sheppard was the third and final leader after he took the point position from Billy Decker on lap 49 and led the remaining 52 laps to win his third straight Super DIRTcar Series race in the 33rd Summer Nationals at Ransomville Speedway on Tuesday night. The victory was also Sheppard’s first career win at Ransomville and prevented rival Stewart Friesen from winning the event for the third straight year at his childhood track.

“I’ve won a lot of races at a lot of different racetracks, but Ransomville was never one of them,” Sheppard said in Victory Lane. “We were so close last year. Me and Stewie (Friesen) had a heck of a battle (last year). It just feels great to finally get to Victory Lane here, especially in such a special event.”

Billy Decker threw everything he had at Sheppard to try and retake the lead off the final restart with five laps to go, but fell 0.923 seconds short of a victory. Decker did manage to win an extended battle with Larry Wight to extend his point lead, which was just two markers entering the event. Ransomville regular Erick Rudolph and Stewart Friesen rounded out the top-five.

“Certainly, you like to win, but we’ll take it,” Decker said. “The Page Trucking car was pretty good. (I was ) dicing it out there heavy in lapped traffic. That was getting dicey, I’ll tell ya. The fans saw a pretty good race out there. We’ll take it.”

The 100-lap race began with local pilot Kenny Wills III on the pole and Jimmy Phelps to his outside. Phelps led the opening lap and paced the field through a trio of cautions in the first 30 laps before Decker made his bid for the top spot. Decker seized a lap 32 opportunity when Phelps bobbled on the cushion in turn two, allowing the No.91 to race to the bottom of the track and take the lead.

It was brief, however, as Phelps retook the point the following lap, but remained under siege from Decker until the two drivers exchanged the lead again on laps 38 and 39. On lap 40, Sheppard got past Phelps for second and set out to track down Decker.

The caution waved again on lap 41 when Keith Flach slowed in turn four. When the race resumed on lap 47, Friesen jumped to third while Sheppard continued to pressure Decker. On lap 49, Sheppard made the decisive move of the race when he drove under Decker in turn four to claim the lead.

Over the final 52 laps, Sheppard pounded his No.9s against the cushion in turns one and two, but tried both the inside and outside lanes in turns three and four as he navigated through the traffic.

“It was a fine line up on the wall,” Sheppard said. “It was a little closer to the wall than I like to run, but that’s just part of the deal here at Ransomville. I’m just very fortunate. A lot of people got messed up on the bottom on restarts early, but my car was good enough early I could maintain and not lose any spots. It seemed like the longer the race went, the better we got.”

Wight jumped into the top-three off a lap 62 restart and then spent the better part of the final 35 laps dueling side-by-side with Decker for second. Wight lost the battle on lap 86 when he went off the track in turn two trying to avoid contact with a lapped car. It was the second time in the race Wight had to take evasive action to quickly avoid serious problems. Earlier in the race, he hit the outside wall and all but destroyed the body on the right side of the car. Regardless, Wight was happy with the run.

“We’re happy with it,” Wight said. “That’s just sheet metal. The main components of the car were fine and the car still handled alright. We can bang that out and patch it up for tomorrow and give it another run.”

Sheppard was able to outpace Decker in clean air over the final 10 laps, but restarts on laps 93 and 95 forced him to hit his marks as Decker lurked within five car lengths each time.

Wight was the race’s KSE Hard Charger, advancing seven positions from 10th to 3rd. Decker was the Fast Qualifier with a lap of 16.151 seconds around the 3/8-mile oval. Decker, Wight Sheppard and Max McLaughlin claimed heat race wins. McLaughlin was also the recipient of the Speedy First Aid Hard Luck Award after a he slowed on lap 57. He was able to race his way back to 14th, but lost out on a top-10 finish.

Ransomville’s 358 Modified weekly points leader Ryan Susice won the Last Chance Qualifier. McLaughlin and Mike Mahaney were eligible for the 811 Dig Safely New York redraw bonus award if either could win from the eighth or eleventh starting positions, but were unsuccessful.

The Super DIRTcar Series returns to action on Wednesday, August 9 at Merrittville Speedway for the rescheduled Bob St. Amand Memorial 100. Race time is 7:00pm with Hot Laps and qualfiying taking place beforehand at 6:15pm. For additional event information, visit www.merrittvillespeedway.com.

DIRTcar 358 Modified Series Starts Off at Autodrome Granby on August 11

GRANBY, QC – August 9, 2017 – The DIRTcar 358 Modified Series will kickoff a busy three month schedule with the initial round of action at Autodrome Granby on Friday, August 11. Some of the best 358 Modified drivers will be in the hunt to win the coveted championship that includes 11 venues in total.

Autodrome Granby promoter Dominic Lussier is excited to host the Series opener for the first time.

“I am excited to host the first race of the series this season,” said Lussie, who worked closely with the promotional team at Mohawk International Raceway to schedule the race. “This means that we will have many outsiders visiting us. John Lazore and I talked about this event and we made an agreement. Mohawk is having a remake for a 50-lap event on Thursday and then our race on Friday. If a driver is able to win both, he will get an extra $1,000. I think it is a great incentive to have more drivers in the pits for both nights.”

After Granby, the Series will have a busy month of September starting off at Cornwall Motor Speedway on Sunday, September 3 before the Series makes its return to Can-Am Motorsports Park on Saturday, September 9. The following weekend, the drivers will head to Mohawk Speedway on Friday, September 15. Then, it will be two consecutive nights in Quebec with stops at RPM Speedway on September 22 and the following night at Autodrome Drummond on September 23.

Drivers will then have two weeks to prepare for Super DIRT Week with four races scheduled during the exciting week of racing. Utica-Rome Speedway will kick-off Super Week activities on Tuesday, October 3. The Series then moves to Weedsport on October 4 and Brewerton on Thursday, October 5 and capping off at Oswego Speedway on October 7. The champion will be crowned the following week at Brockville Ontario Speedway on Saturday, October 14th.

Defending Series champion Chris Raabe will lead a group of drivers that includes Joey Ladouceur, Brian McDonald, Carey Terrance, Jordan McCreadie, Gage Morin and Luke Whitteker to Granby for the opening round. Local runners David Hebert, Steve Bernard, Mario Clair, Steve and Francois Bernier will be waiting for the challenge in the Lussier & Granby Chevrolet 100. A strong result in the opening race will be key for the drivers to build momentum for the opening round. Mohawk high points leader and Super DIRTcar Series Star Tim Fuller is also penciled-in to compete at Granby along with Danny Johnson, adding to a star studded field of cars.

Racing at Granby is scheduled to start at 7:00pm on Friday, August 11. Expect a full pit area as the first round of the DIRTcar Sportsman tour’s Northern Region will also be on hand for a 50-lap event. For more information and ticket purchase, please visit the website at www.autodromegranby.com.

Overton Charges to Lucas Oil Win at Cherokee Speedway

GAFFNEY, SC (July 7, 2017) – Brandon Overton came from the seventh starting spot to pass race leader Jonathan Davenport on lap 41 and then went on to win his second Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series feature event of the season on Friday night at Cherokee Speedway.

Overton’s Chip Stone and Randy Weaver-owned, Longhorn Chassis rallied in the last 15 laps of the race to get the win. Overton overcame a side-by-side duel with Scott Bloomquist and then he passed four cars in front of him on his way to victory lane.

Josh Richards; in his first-ever appearance at Cherokee Speedway; came home in second in the Best Performance Motorsports, Durham-powered Rocket Chassis. With his runner-up finish, Richards maintains the championship points lead over Scott Bloomquist and Tim McCreadie heading into the series’ next race on Saturday night at Smoky Mountain Speedway in Maryville, Tennessee.

Jimmy Owens was third in the Ramirez Motorsports, E3 Spark Plugs, Durham Racing Engines, Rocket. Bloomquist; who ran as high as second; crossed the line in fourth, with Ross Bailes completing the top five.

In Lucas Oil Victory Lane, Overton was grateful for the chance to drive for the Stone/Weaver Team. “Chip Stone was coming down tonight, but he had a flat tire and Randy [Weaver] stayed at home tonight. So, it was ironic we got to victory lane and our left rear tire was flat. Man, that was an exciting race. We went with a harder compound on the right rear than most. A lot of them went softer and for those that did it kind of brought them back to me in the last ten laps or so,” said the 26-year-old in Victory Lane.

Overton’s SWR Racing entry is sponsored by A.F. Stone Professional Medical Services, Crossfit by Overton, Henderson Motorsports, Mission Transport, Outlaw Racing Southeast, VP Fuels, and Ted Brown’s Quality Paint and Body Shop.

Davenport led the first 40 laps of the race before being overtaken by Overton. Davenport’s night then ended a few laps later up against the turn one wall. Richards then picked up the challenge for the lead, but fell just short of his sixth series win of the season.

“We had a really good car,” said Richards. “For this being our first-time here that’s pretty good. Just seeing this place on video doesn’t do it justice. It is a lot bigger than you think. You must learn where to let off the accelerator and get back on the gas here. It took us a while, but I think we adapted well. It was a good points night. Congratulations to Brandon on the win.”

Owens was glad to be in the hunt for the win in the final ten laps. “Our car was good all night, we tried our best to hang in there, those two in front of me were just a little bit better than us. The track was in really good shape, we have run here enough, but Overton picked the right tire obviously and that’s why he won the race.”

Completing the top ten were Don O’Neal, Earl Pearson Jr., Steve Francis, Michael Brown, and Tim McCreadie.

Ferguson Scores First-Career Lucas Oil Victory at Fayetteville

FAYETTEVILLE, NC (July 6, 2017) Chris Ferguson made his home-state fans proud on Thursday night as he won his first-career Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series event in the Dunn-Benson Ford Wayne Gray Memorial – presented by Campbell University at Fayetteville Motor Speedway. The 27-year-old completed a dream night by setting fast time, winning his heat, and leading all the way to become the 15th different driver to win a LOLMDS race in 2017.

Gregg Satterlee; in his first ever appearance at the track; came home in second, and he was followed by G.R. Smith, who recoded his best career LOLMDS finish with a third place. Completing the top five drivers were Josh Richards and Steve Francis. With his finish tonight, Richards has taken over the points lead from Scott Bloomquist by just 10 points heading into Cherokee Speedway on Friday night.

Ferguson emerged from his car in victory lane and hugged a multitude of people to the cheers of the large crowd on hand for the event, and thanked several people and sponsors for their help in finally getting to Lucas Oil Victory Lane for the first time.

“Man, thank you all so much, thanks to the fans for coming out tonight. I wasn’t sure about passing McCreadie, Once I couldn’t get to his outside I just rode around there. I slowed my pace down there towards the end. It’s taken a lot of hard work and sweat to get here [to Victory Lane]. I nearly won a Lucas Oil race at Cherokee back in ’09, but finished second or third. Hats off to my crew, my friends and family, and all my fans for sticking with us. There’s been a lot of ups and downs but they have always stuck with me,” said Ferguson.

Ferguson fought off all challenges from Satterlee and Smith to get the win. Despite heavy late-race traffic, Ferguson held a manageable lead until the finish. “I have to thank Mark Richards at Rocket Chassis, and this is a brand-new Clements Racing Engine. Thanks to Lucas Oil and the track for putting this on. I have to actually get up and go work tomorrow, but we will be at Cherokee tomorrow night to try and make it two-in-a-row.”

Ferguson’s car is sponsored by Diff-Ron Machining, Live Oak Dentistry, Carver and Sons Roofing, K&K Trucking, Champion Spark Plugs, Big A’s, Harley Racing, RPM Trailer Sales

Satterlee’s second place finish was well-deserved after he suffered issues on Monday Night at Muskingum County Speedway where he failed to complete a lap. “We put a new Durham engine in the car today and it performed very well. This was my first time here and I thought the track was good. Congrats to Chris on the win. I believe that was three Rocket XR1’s in the top three.”

Smith who narrowly lost out to Ferguson for overall fast time had his best career LOLMDS finish. “Oh, we are extremely happy. That’s our best run with these guys. They are the best in the business and it’s an honor to race with them.”

Completing the top ten were Earl Pearson Jr., Dustin Mitchell, Kyle Pierce, Scott Bloomquist, and Jimmy Owens.

Schatz Outlasts Kaeding and Stewart for Victory at Dakota State Fair

Schatz Picks up 13th Victory of the Outlaws Season

HURON, S.D — July 1, 2017 — Starting from the front row, Shane Stewart grabbed the lead exiting Turn 2 on the opening lap and set sail setting a blistering pace. With the main event being cut short by one lap due to track conditions, Stewart had to withstand one final restart. On that restart with one lap to go, Stewart restarted directly in front of Schatz. The top two of Stewart and Schatz headed down the backstretch coming to the checkers. Schatz was able to get a run on the high side coming out of Turn 2 allowing him to drive by Stewart to pick up his 13th victory of the World of Outlaws Craftsman® Sprint Car Series season.

In a night that saw numerous flat tires throughout the 22-car field, the 30-lap race at Dakota State Fair Speedway was shortened to 29 laps due to track conditions.

Shane Stewart, the driver of the No. 2 Larson Marks Racing entry has been on a hot streak over the last couple of week. Having won two-in-a-row at West Liberty and Beaver Dam, just a week ago, Stewart was looking to pick up his fifth win of the season at Dakota State Fair Speedway on Saturday night.

After jumping out to an early lead on the start, Stewart set a blistering pace putting a gap between him and the No. 9 of Daryn Pittman who also started on the front row with Stewart. The first of six stoppages of the night was for the No. 93 who slowed at the top of Turn 1 with a flat tire. Sheldon Haudenschild would recover for a fifth-place finish.

Stewart would jump back out to a big lead on the restart. Schatz who was running third behind Pittman at the time was able to get by the No. 9 Great Clips machine on lap 22 for second. It was on lap 25 that Pittman sustained a flat tire, bringing out a yellow flag.

As the field was coming to get two laps to go at the stripe, Schatz dove aggressively under Stewart for the lead in Turn 3 and made it stick. However, the No. 5 of David Gravel went for a flip in Turn 1 at the same time, giving Stewart the lead back for the restart, Gravel was able to be pushed to the work area but could not return.

“We got by [Stewart] before the red came out,” Said Donny Schatz. “I knew it got to be where [Stewart] was going to stay down on the bottom groove and we just had a little bit left to get around him on the outside coming out of Turn 2.”

Due to track conditions, officials made the decision to the shorten the race by one lap. Stewart regained the lead after the previous lap was not scored complete. Stewart lead Schatz, Kaeding and the rest of the field to the restart where both the green and white flags were displayed.

“Man, that was tough,” said Shane Stewart. “I actually thought my tire was going flat coming to the green [on the last restart]. When [track] takes rubber like this the restarts are so hard on your tires.”

Stewart led into Turn 1 but Schatz used the top grove exiting Turn 2 to get by Stewart for the lead.

“You don’t ever want to lead that many laps and finish third,” said Shane Stewart. “It’s a testament to how good my car is right now. My guys did a great job, just wasn’t meant to be.”

“I’m here to win races, that’s what we’re here to do,” said Schatz regarding his winning pass. “When you’re in second and got an opportunity to win a race, that’s what you’re going to do – you’re going to go for it. You’re not going to do anything silly and we didn’t. We got the win and that’s what matters,” added Schatz.

Schatz would complete the rest of the 3/8th-mile en-route to his 13th victory of the 2017 World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car season.

“We definitely got our monies worth on the tires tonight,” said Donny Schatz who’s right-rear tire was bald.

“I didn’t think it was going to get that abrasive and rubbered up that early,” said Schatz. “Shane [Stewart] got out there and set a pretty good pace and I was trying to make the bottom work, it felt ok but those guys got away. I moved up and you could feel it – that’s the point you have to decide how hard you want to go. I’m glad I did that because there was no way I was going to be around at the end to have an opportunity to win that race.”

Stewart would eventually lose another position to Tim Kaeding in the No. 3 who took advantage of others misfortunes and drove up through the field from the 12th-starting spot.

“Man, this feels like a win for me,” said Tim Kaeding. “We’ve struggled pretty much all year. To run second with these guys on a rubbered down track like that and not pop a tire, I’m definitely going to enjoy a beer tonight.”

The World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series returns to action on Thursday, July 6 for a make-up Feature at Deer Creek Speedway in Spring Valley, MN before heading off to Cedar Lake Speedway in New Richmond, WI on Saturday and Sunday, July 7 and 8. Tickets for these events can be purchased on WorldofOutlaws.com/Tickets or by calling 844-DIRT-TIX.

CARRIER CASHES IN AT MUSKINGUM COUNTY SPEEDWAY

ZANESVILLE, OH (July 3, 2017) – Eddie Carrier Jr. took over the lead on lap 25 when Devin Moran suffered heartbreaking mechanical issues. He then went on to dominate the remainder of the race to win the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series-sanctioned event on Monday Night at the Muskingum County Speedway. It was Carrier’s ninth career LOLMDS victory.

Carrier becomes the 14th different winner this season on the LOLMDS tour, in his Keaton’s Collision Center, Durham-powered Longhorn Chassis entry. The 46-year-old driver withstood several charges from Scott Bloomquist who left the race under caution on lap 48. Afterwards, Carrier went unchallenged the rest of the way.

Hudson O’Neal collected his second-straight podium finish with a career best runner-up finish in the Todd Burns-owned, Club 29 entry as he out-dueled Tim McCreadie in the Sweeteners Plus, Longhorn. Don O’Neal and Josh Richards completed the top five.

“Thank you to Longhorn Chassis, as well as Rick and Jake Keaton for giving me such a good car. I am a big guy and to find a car that fits is tough sometimes, but we have had something special going on the last two weeks. We won at Florence last week and to come here and beat these guys, that’s huge.”

“Scott’s [Bloomquist] going to race you clean; he and I have run together so much over the years that we know what to expect out of each other. I was fighting and trying to hold him off.”

Hudson O’Neal closed the gap on fellow LOLMDS Rookie of the Year candidate Gregg Satterlee, who finished in 24th. “What an amazing race track and race, Donnie [Moran] knows what he’s doing. Tim [McCreadie] and I had good race, once I cleared him I thought I had a shot at Eddie. I have to go down there [to the pits] and thank my crew. They have given me a great race car the last two nights.”

McCreadie with his third-place finish closed the gap on the top-two in points. “Man, when I passed little O’Neal I thought I had a good shot at the win, but he came back and got back around me. The bottom just never took off all night. He [O’Neal] and Devin [Moran] are respectful on and off the race track. It’s hard to find that nowadays there are some that forget where there right rear quarter-panel is.”

Completing the top ten were Rod Conley, Boom Briggs, Earl Pearson Jr., Jimmy Owens, and Mason Zeigler.

Schatz Scores Win 12 on Return to The Dirt Oval, Where He Won 12 Years Ago

JOLIET, IL — June 27, 2017 — Eight-time champion and current points leader Donny Schatz took the Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing No. 15 Arctic Cat machine through the checkers to win the FVP Outlaw Clay Classic at The Dirt Oval at Route 66 Raceway, stealing the lead from Kraig Kinser with only five laps to go. Although Kinser saw his best race of the season to date, Schatz rode him hard, and he ultimately landed in eighth with Kasey Kahne Racing teammates Brad Sweet and Daryn Pittman following Schatz through the checkers.

“Kraig [Kinser] was really good at the start,” said Schatz from Victory Lane. “He took off there on the bottom. I didn’t quite know if the bottom or the top, the middle, what was going to happen. I just had to give a little time for the race car to come in and the tires to get warm. You kind of had to be all over really. It was a guessing game there for a while, and then we had to restart. Being on the outside I kind of felt like I was hung out to dry a little bit, and Brad [Sweet] got by. Obviously they were really good. I think he started a ways back.”

Sweet, who walked away with the KSE Hard Charger Award, started in 13 and worked his way into second. A restart with 13 laps to go saw a three-wide battle for the lead between Kinser, Schatz and Sweet, in which Kinser prevailed, holding the lead for eight more laps, while Sweet and Schatz continued the battle for second with exchanges.

Throughout the race, another tough battle was playing out behind the leaders between Pittman and David Gravel, ending in Pittman’s favor after several exchanges.

Pittman, who set Quick Time at 13.637 second, was the only one in Victory Lane who even ran the Craftsman Club Dash, which was led by Jason Sides and Paul McMahan.

Starting on the pole after winning the Dash, Sides led the first four laps of the Feature as Kinser charged up from midfield in position 11 in some of his finest racing this season.

By Lap 5, Kinser was leading, with Sides and Brian Brown behind him as Schatz and Sweet followed suit, diligently taking on car after car, working their way up, and McMahan was losing ground.

Overall, it an exciting return to the half-mile oval, which last saw true oval-track racing twelve years ago. And while the racing was certainly better this time around, one thing remained the same: the champion. Schatz won at the track on July 8, 2005 during the Series’ last visit. Twelve years later, he scored win number 12 of the season.

The FVP Outlaw Clay Classic continues tomorrow with the World of Outlaws Craftsman Late Model Series, while the Sprint Car Series heads for Spring Valley, MN for the Clash at the Creek at Deer Creek Speedway. Tickets are available online.
