PJ Wiggins Memorial

By Jim Rouse, BRP Media (9-10-12) Ocala, FL – This week-end’s 2-day show is the 2nd annual PJ Wiggins Memorial. Wiggins was an outstanding race-car driver but was, and still is, a great father figure to his children and even children who watched him win with a smooth and graceful technique; more importantly, he was always a very thankful man. A victim to skin cancer, he is sorely missed in the racing community so we honor him with the 2nd annual PJ Wiggins Memorial for the Scorpion Racing Products Open-Wheel Modifieds. Racing alongside them Friday night will be the Buddy’s Home Furnishings Limited Late Models, Hobby Stocks, 1-800-ASK GARY Thunder Stocks, and the Rent-N-Roll Gladiators.

The Modifeds are actually going to race twice as they make-up the Florida State Modified Championship race from July that was rained-out. So, Kyle Bronson and Dalton Lanich will have twice as much wear on the equipment (though both could drive 2 different cars) as they chase a championship. Of course, defending PJ Wiggins Memorial champion Rich Pratt isn’t out of either hunt and the Anthony, FL driver knows a trick or two around Bubba Raceway Park. The driver we call “4-Time” is in 4th as he chases #5; Jeff Mathews, however, has work to do if he wants it. Jim Passino went all Brett Favre on the sabbatical and was back behind the wheel of the 34A last time out. You can’t count any one out and don’t forget this- David Reutimann isn’t on any of the NASCAR entry lists. (more…)

Jessica Murphy tops FUPTS 50 at Citrus County Speedway

Citrus County Speedway fans were treated to two 50 lap feature events on Saturday night as the Florida United Pro Truck Series and the Pure Stocks both went the extra distance. The night got underway with time trial qualifying for the trucks and Pure Stocks. When the dust settled, Jessica Murphy took top honors in the truck division, and Michael Martin to the honors in the Pure Stocks.

17 Pro Trucks took the green with Tim Sozio (16x) and Gerald Campbell (2x) occupying the front row, fast qualifier Murphy would start in the 3rd position. Sozio would jump out the early lead with Murphy settling into 2nd, and Brent Hubar (64) in 3rd. The top three would run unchanged until the 1st caution at lap 12 would slow the field for a restart. Truck series rules call for double file restarts, so Sozio would now have the fast qualifier Murphy, just to his outside. Murphy would power by on the restart green, to take the lead in the outside lane. Hubar would also find a way by Sozio to take the 2nd position just ahead of Brad Bowman (2) in 3rd. (more…)

Schatz Sails to Ninth World of Outlaws Win at Scenic Calistoga

The four-time champion now leads the points race by a season-high 50 points

CALISTOGA, Calif. – Sept. 9, 2012 – It shouldn’t be a surprise that Donny Schatz parked in Victory Lane on Sunday at Calistoga Speedway.

Schatz continued his recent tear in dominating fashion, leading all 25 laps to record his ninth World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series win of the season and his second at the scenic half mile.

The victory was the latest highlight in a hot streak that dates back to late July. Schatz has recorded six wins and 15 top fives in the last 17 points races, including a current streak of six consecutive top-five finishes.

The success has also built a 50-point advantage in the championship standings, which is the largest difference between first place and second all season.

“We’re on attack mode,” Schatz said. “These guys definitely got their game face on. They’ve got an awesome machine behind me and we’ve got our motors running really good, so we’re happy.” (more…)

HANTZ GRABS FLAT ROCK 7-UP 125 WIN; HUGO TAKES ENDURO, RINGGER ENDURO CHAMP

Flat Rock, Michigan-September 8, 2012: It was a night of firsts at Flat Rock Speedway Saturday as Angola, IN driver Scott Hantz held back Johnny VanDoorn and Jason Dietsch to win the exciting 7-Up 125 lap feature for the ARCA/CRA Super Series Late Models, Scott’s first Flat Rock win and the Series initial visit to the track. Bobby Hugo edged Danny Bennett by 2 car lengths to grab his first victory in the 300 lap Enduro championship race, and Matt Ringger’s 6th place run was enough to seal the deal on his first-ever Enduro championship.

The first visit ever to Flat Rock by the ARCA/CRA cars was a great race as the battle up front waged on throughout the 125 lap contest. West Virginia driver Travis Braden started things off by setting fast time at 12:228. Travis drew an 8 for the inversion, giving Kenzie Ruston the pole starting spot. Pat Zorn led lap 1, but Ruston took control on lap 2 and led for 6 laps. Hantz spun on lap 7 to bring out the yellow flag. (more…)
