The Buddy’s Home Furnishings/Sunoco United Dirt Late Model Challenge Series raced with the RaceCar Engineering Late Models in the 2nd annual Mike Peters Open while Buddy’s Limited Late Models, Hobby Stocks, 1-800-ASK GARY Thunderstocks, and even spectators raced for glory in their respective divisions.
Limited Late Models ran a very clean and very quick race with the only caution falling on lap 1 for Eddie Gainey’s driveshaft. On lap 8 JO Nobles flew past Forrest Gough as they negotiated traffic and driver #18 kept flying all the way to the checkers. Gough came home 2nd with Bubba Clem yet again a solid 3rd. Adam Higginbotham and Kevin Mills completed the top 5.
The Spectator Race finale came down to Dennis Sanderson’s Dodge Van looking to upset Todd Ford’s Ford Mustang. Sanderson couldn’t upset the world and Todd Ford won the Spectator Race.
Hobby Stock action saw many drivers have a chance at the lead but on lap 3 Trevor Gamble stole it from Mark Maresca. Maresca had a night he’ll want to forget as he spun 3 times, once while running 4th. Gamble made it through the stop-and-go race with Tim Gay in hot pursuit. Rodney Wright stalled once he reached 3rd but it was still a great run for the driver of the 99. Devin Walker and Brian Shea fought hard for their top 5 finishes and were seen smiling after the race.
The Mike Peters Open was a hard fought battle with just 5 cautions over the 50-lapper. Kyle VanSickle watched a championship lead vanish over the past few nights and he brought out the first 2 cautions for solo spins. On lap 8 Ivedent Lloyd, Jr. passed Mark Whitener for the lead but on lap 12 they switched. As they came back to the line the 21 got back in front of the 58 as Jason Burke spun in turn 2. Advantage Ivedent. Move to turn 3 and lap 22; insert Burke again. On lap 24 Whitener passed Lloyd for the lead but just 4 later ‘Dent took it back and held it until Whitener’s 58 broke on lap 41. The final 9 were green and Lloyd pulled away at that point. Tyler Ivey was 2nd, Jack Nosbisch 3rd, Keith Nosbisch a much needed 4th, and Jeff Mathews completed the top 5.
1-800-ASK GARY Thunderstock action was exciting and didn’t end until a while after the checkers flew. Todd Roberts led the first 1/3 but Eddie Kilbury, Jr. made the pass right before Roberts spun. Kilbury held the lead through all the yellow flags until lap 17 of 18 when he let Jason Gamble make the pass. Gamble finished 1st with Scott Haas a beautiful 2nd. Kilbury was 3rd, John Thorpe 4th, and Mike Valdez completed the top 5. However, troubles on the rear-end of the 3 of Haas saw him disqualified and a tie rod on Gamble’s 21 was 1/2 inch off according to a very disappointed Eddie Tillander. Kilbury would inherit the hardware as Thorpe and Valdez moved on to the podium. David Miller, Jr. moved up to 4th and Justin Durbin would move to 5th.
Next week-end is Monster Jam! Friday, Saturday, and Sunday shows at Bubba Raceway Park.
