Jim Rouse, BRP Media (9-14-12) Ocala, FL – The PJ Wiggins Memorial was a success as was the make-up race from the Florida State Modified Championship. The best Modifieds in the Southeast ran 70 laps of feature action while the Buddy’s Home Furnishings Limited Late Models, Hobby Stocks, 1-800-ASK GARY Thunder Stocks, and the Rent-N-Roll Gladiators put on fantastic features as well.
First up was the make-up race for the Florida State Modified Championship which went 30 laps. In turn 1 Bubba Christian smacked the wall while Wayne Hammond found the wall and had help from Ronnie Soltis to finish the job. Christian and Hammond would retire from the race while Soltis would continue on.Kyle Bronson went from 5th to 1st on lap 1 before Chuck Gustafson, Jr., Ivedent Lloyd, Jr., Dalton Lanich, and Scott Kurtzner piled up in turn 2; Bronson, Rich Pratt, and Ronnie Chance would lead the field. Just 2 laps later Rich Pratt would retire with mechanical problems and set up another restart. On lap 5, as he made the pass for 7th, David Reutimann fell out when the rear-end failed him leaving Bronson, Devin Dixon, and Buzzie Reutimann up front with 25-to-go. On lap 22 Larry Mott, running in the top 10, scraped the wall and brought a caution out for debris. After a great run in the top 5 all night Ronnie Chance blew the #7S up and brought out another caution. Bronson would have to keep Jeff Mathews and Buzzie at bay after Dixon pulled off! Bronson did just that and swept the Florida State Modified Championship! Jeff Mathews went runner-up with Buzzie Reutimann, Todd Neiheiser, and Tim Powers the rest of a very strong top 5.
Next up were the Buddy’s Home Furnishings Limited Late Models for a 20-lapper. David Showers would lead his son after a after they locked out the front row. On lap 6 Ricky Land stopped at the bottom of the track right before JO Nobles spun from 4th! That would leave 14-to-go with David Showers, David Showers, Jr., and Christian McGillivray the top 3.With 5 to go Ricky Land took the B99 around in turn 2 which would give Carter Stokes and David Showers, Jr. a shot at David Showers for the win! Just 2 laps later Caleb McGillivray spun the 2X but now in 3rd was JO Nobles! “Big Chief” David Showers got the monkey off his back as Nobles overtook Junior on the last lap. Stokes and Forrest Gough completed the top 5.
Hobby Stocks put on the 20-lapper of the night as Kevin Durden stole the lead from outside pole. Tim Powers stole the lead on lap 3 before the lap 4 caution when Trevor Gamble felt the right rear go flat from 3rd. On lap 8 Gamble cut another right rear down on his Friend’s Racing #12 as Powers, Durden, and Rodney Wright led the field. Durden stole the lead back on lap 9 as Wright spun while side-by-side with Durden and Powers for the lead! Chad Scranton would inherit 3rd with Durden and Powers 1-2, respectively, while the title fighters were 8th and 16th. Ed Hill smcked the wall on the restart and collected Trey Cameron, III, Mike Stalnaker, Matt Kramer, and Rodney Wright who learned the value in staying up front. Kramer, Wright, and Cameron continued on but the other 2 were done for the night; all were okay after the accident. Durden, Powers, and Scranton were 1-2-3, respectively. Powers stole the lead back on lap 11 as Gamble went door-to-door with “IceMan” for 3rd. Durden would take it back on lap 15 in a wild race between 2 of the best in the Southeast! Powers got it back on lap 16 and never gave it back. Powers over Durden then Gamble, Joe Boyd, and Rodney Wright rebounded to complete the top 5.
The PJ Wiggins Memorial race went 40 laps with #22 on top all night and Kyle Bronson the leader of lap 1, again starting from behind the front row. On lap 3 Todd Nieheiser spun from 4th with Bronson, Buzzie Reutimann, and Jeff Mathews the top 3. Under caution on lap 12 Bronson had to pit leaving Mathews and David Reutimann as the top 2. Just shy of halfway it was Mathews, Reuti, and Buzzie the top 3.With 11 to go Chuck Gustafson, Jr. went around in turn 1 leaving Mathews, Devin Dixon, Reuti, and KB as the top 4. A 5 lap run allowed Reuti and Bronson to tussle and switch spots on track while Mathews and Dixon pulled away. Bronson went all out with 4 to go and took the lead from Mathews and Dixon. Bronson with the drive of the century took the PJ Wiggins Memorial over Mathews, Dixon, David Reutimann, and Dalton Lanich.
1-800-ASK GARY Thunder Stocks action was intense but, other than lap 1 with John Thorpe, “Sweetfeet” Shane Nichols dominated the event. The T&T Automotive cars had a rough night but Jonathan Appleby did not as he went P2. James Sullivan, III, William Gillam, and Brandon Elwood rounded out the top 5.
Rent-N-Roll Gladiators action was quiet until lap 11 when championship contender Brandon Haseleu slowed and eventually pitted. That wasn’t all because as the field came to the white flag Steve Johnson’s right rear broke leaving him vulnerable to the attacks of Tony laPorta and Jordan McMillon. Johnson led all the way to turn 4 but LaPorta and McMillon stole it from him out of the corner. LaPorta beat McMillon by a nose for the win while Johnson salvaged 3rd. Shane Guessford and Randy Harless completed the top 5.
