Merritt Island, Fl (Janaury 29, 2010) For race fans, February is THE month where they can finally get a belly full of racing. From Daytona International to Volusia Speedway Park, Eastbay Raceway Park, New Smyrna Speedway, Orlando SpeedWorld, Hendry County Motorsports Park, from asphalt to dirt, there is plenty of racing for even the hardest of diehard race fans.
The Rolex 24, on January 30 and 31st, always attracts a lot of race fans. There you will get 24 hours of racing action and you just never know who may or may not be behind the wheel. From Daytona you can travel to Eastbay Raceway Park for their Winternationals which will feature the Lucas Oil Dirt Late Models from February 1st to February 6th. Volusia Speedway Park will open their DIRTcar Nationals on February 2nd with the UMP DIRTcar Open Wheel Modifieds and practice for the O’Reilly All Stars Circuit of Champions who will run thru February 4th at Volusia. Starting February 5th thru the 7th at Volusia it will be the WOO Sprint Car Series and the UMP DIRTcar Open Wheel Modifieds.
If you are an asphalt fan and not crazy about dirt only a few miles from Daytona International is New Smyrna Speedway on State Road 44 in Samsula, Florida who will open on February 5th with the NASCAR Tour-Type Modifieds, SK Modifieds, Super Late Models, Late Models, Crate Models, and IMCA/FL Open Wheel Modifieds.
Then on February 6th, it is back to Daytona International for Daytona 500 Qualifying, Lucas Oil Slick Mist 200 (featuring the stars of the ARCA series), and the Budweiser Shootout. A full day of racing and basking in the glorious Florida sun. Hopefully the weather will be in the 70’s, sun shining brightly above, and everyone having a grand ole time at Daytona.
Not until February 11th do fans return to Daytona International for the Gatorade Duet which will give you quite a few days to taste the great dirt and asphalt racing the State of Florida has to offer fans.
While taking off a few days from Daytona, fans can return to Volusia Speedway Park where they will see the UMP DIRTcar Late Models and UMP DIRTcar Open Wheel Modifieds from February 8th thru February 9th. On February 10th, joining the UMP DIRTcar Late Models will be the Super DIRTcar Series Big Blocks. Volusia Speedway Park in also only a few miles from Daytona International on State Road 40 in Ormond Beach, Florida.
But if that is not your “cup of tea”, you can always go back to New Smyrna Speedway who will feature Sprint Cars on February 7th and 8th. On Feburay 9th, the SK Modifieds will run a 50 lap race along with the Super Late Models, Late Models, Crate Models, NASCAR Tour-Type Modifieds and the IMCA/FL Modifieds.
For those who were a John Blewitt fan, New Smyrna Speedway will hold the 2nd Annual John Blewitt Memorial 50 feature the NASCAR Tour-Type Modifieds on February 10th along with a 50 lap IMCA/FL Open Wheel Modified race, Super Late Models, Late Models, Crate Models, and SK Modifieds.
And if that is still not your “cup of tea”, you can always head back to Eastbay Raceway Park in Tampa, Florida for some more dirt racing with the USAC Sprints on February 8th, 9th and 10th. Starting on February 11th at Eastbay thru February 13th, the earth pounding, ground shaking All Star 410 Sprints move into town. If you need a good shaking of the ole bones, this is the place you will definitely get it.
If you don’t want to drive all the way to Eastbay for dirt action, you can always go to Volusia Speedway Park on February 11th for WOO Late Model Series/Super DIRTcar Series Big Blocks. Then on February 12th, Volusia will feature the UMP DIRTcar Late Models along with the Super DIRTcar Series Big Blocks. Ending the DIRTcar Nationals on February 13th will be the WOO Late Model Series along with the Super DIRTcar Series Big Blocks.
February 12th at Daytona International Speedway the always popular NASCAR Camping World Truck Series goes into action with the NextEra Energy Resources 250. These trucks are fast, race hard, and always please the fans. Then one day later, February 12th, the Nationwide Series takes centerstage at Daytona with the Camping World 300.
Then February 14th, Valentine’s Day, the Daytona 500 runs and fans will say goodbye to Daytona International until July 1st when fans roll back once again to Daytona Beach for practice night, the Rolex Series 250 and ending with the Coke Zero 400 on July 3rd.
But let’s not forget the other racing going on still in Florida in February. Once again, we return to New Smyrna Speedway (1/2 mile asphalt track) on February 11th for a 50 lap Super Late Model and Late Model race, Crate Models, Tour-Type Mods, SK Mods, and Pro Trucks. February 12th at New Smyrna will be the 100 lap Richie Evans Memorial, “THE” race every Tour-Type Modified driver wants to win. This will be the 25th Annual Richie Evans Memorial. Also on the program that night will be the Crate Model 50, Super Late Models, Late Models, SK Mods, and Pro Trucks.
Also for all those diehard Modified fans, the 3rd Annual Modified Reunion will be out in the front parking lot. Hall of Fame drivers like Dutch Hoag, Bill Wimble, Bentley Warren, Bugs Stevens, Will Cagle, Gil Hearne, Ron Bouchard, Ed Ortiz, Andy Romano, Ron Narducci, Satch Worley and Chuck Boos have all been here. Famous car owners, such as Bob Garbarino, Bob Judkins, Speedy Thomas, Don Turner (of the famous Turner Brothers) and Joe Brady have all supported this event. Track owners Dick Waterman and Stan Friesen, plus Flagmen Ken Golden and Chris Hopkins also turn out to tell old stories and renew friendships.
Also, the Vintage Racecar show has turned out to be very popular with both the fans and participants. Car count has been near the 20 mark each year, and we are expecting a larger turnout than ever in 2010.
Ending the World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing at New Smyrna Speedway on February 13th will be the 8th Annual Pete Orr Memorial featuring the Super Late Models, Pro Truck 50, Late Models and Tour-Type Modifieds.
But, we aren’t done yet. Eastbay Raceway Park will continue their Winternationals for a few more weeks so if you aren’t ready to return to your home state, there is still plenty of action in Florida.
Also, for those of you who love Legend cars and I know they are many that do, Orlando SpeedWorld will hold their annual Winternational from February 9th thru February 13th with Legends (Masters, Pro, Semi-Pro and Young Lions), Bandoleros (Bandits, Young Guns, and Outlaw), and Thunder Cars. Racing will start each day at 1 pm which will give you plenty of time to visit a nighttime track for even more racing action. Cars from all over the United States, Canada, and England will be in the pits and provide a lot of racing action and fun.
Hopefully this will help all the out-of-state fans coming into Florida for the 2010 opening season for stock car racing. From asphalt to dirt, there is something for everyone. Now, all you have to do is decide which way to go and what stars you would like to see the most. All have great racing and one thing that is absolutely positive, you WON’T be disappointed in your visit to the Sunshine State in February.
