Adam Hilton Leads All 30 Laps to Take DIRTcar Sportsman Modified Series Win

Super Dirt Car WinnerELBRIDGE, N. Y. – June 6, 2013 – After a night of history at the Dirt Motorsports Hall of Fame, Rolling Wheels Raceway Park experienced its own night of history in the making for the DIRTcar Hall of Fame 60 Wednesday, June 5. As Tuesday’s Dirt Motorsports Hall of Fame honorees looked upon “The Fast Track,” as Big-Block Modified star Stewart Friesen claimed the coveted Super DIRTcar Series 60-lap victory, the first series points race of the season.

“This is one of the most historic places on the circuit that we go to and to win here, it means so much,” Friesen said. “We had a perfect night. The car unloaded well, we were strong in practice, had a great time trial run, and that set the tone for the rest of the night.”

Friesen placed seventh overall in time trials with a 20.626-second lap, starting him first in his heat group. He won his group’s heat race, but the redraw put him ninth in the starting grid.

“We had to pass some good, tough cars,” said Friesen, who was up for the challenge. “It was just a great race. I was really thankful when we got out front and there were no cautions.”

With a jump-start at the green flag, Friesen passed five cars before lap four, putting him in fourth place. He continued to pilot his way forward while early race leader Steve Paine, of Waterloo, N. Y., grappled with Billy Decker, of Sidney, N. Y., at the front of the pack. Friesen pulled up on the outside of Decker’s Gypsum Wholsalers 91d in lap 14, and the two raced side-by-side until Friesen squeezed ahead at the start-finish line going into lap 15.

Lapped traffic in lap 19 was no match for the two-time NAPA Auto Parts Super DIRT Week Big-Block Modified champion. Friesen led the remainder of the caution-free race in his M.R. Burdick 1F TEO, taking home the $6,000 prize.

The adjustments made to the car early in the race night helped him stay strong in the feature, Friesen said.

Friesen“We just made small changes to the car all night long – played with the Bilstein shocks a little bit and the Draco springs,” he said. “It’s just a great package. Everything responded really well.”

Now that he’s tackled “The Fast Track,” the Ontario driver is setting his sights on his next big race – round two of the Super DIRTcar Series at New Egypt Speedway Tuesday, June 18. The Pioneer Pole Buildings, Inc., “Dirty Jersey 60” marks Friesen’s first foray into race promotion.

“It’s definitely going to be a a star-studded event. We’re going to have the best guys coming from up and down the East coast,” Friesen said of the event, which he promotes in partnership with Brett Deyo as Friesen-Deyo Promotions.

Finishing second in Wednesday’s DIRTcar Hall of Fame 60 was Gary Tomkins, of Clifton Springs, N. Y., whose run was nearly as impressive as Friesen’s. Tomkins started 11th, cracked the top five by lap 15, and passed Billy Decker for second by lap 30.

“For whatever reason I run good at this place. I don’t know what it is. I love the track.” Tomkins said.Once I got into second, lapped traffic was pretty brutal. It took took a while to get by those guys. But we’re happy, to have started in the center of the field and finish second.”

Three-time defending Super DIRTcar Series champion Matt Sheppard, of Waterloo, N. Y., started 17th and finished third, improving by an impressive 14 spots, but not enough to keep up his win streak at Rolling Wheels. Brett Hearn finished fourth after starting 14th and early race leaders Billy Decker and Steve Paine finished fifth and 19th respectively. Rounding out the top ten were Alan Johnson in sixth, Billy Dunn in seventh, Jimmy Phelps in eighth, Dale Planck in ninth, and Pete Britten in tenth.

In the DIRTcar Sportsman Modified Series race the same night, Adam Hilton led all 30 laps to claim his first-ever win at Rolling Wheels Raceway Park.

“The car was really good tonight,” Hilton said. “We haven’t won a race at Rolling Wheels yet, we’re really good here. Now tonight, we finally got that win, and we got the series race win all at once, so it feels very good.”

Late race cautions in laps 25 and 26 slowed the race after running several laps caution-free, but Hilton was able to maintain his edge on the restarts and keep his lead through the checkered flag.

Pro Stock star Joey Ladouceur finished a respectable third in his first Sportsman race at Rolling Wheels Raceway.

“We were hoping to get in the top ten, or top five, and we got third place, so we’re happy with that,” Ladouceur said.

Ladouceur’s accomplishments in a Pro Stock are many, having claimed his hundredth win last year and several series championships to boot. He’s trying out a Sportsman Modified for size, and although his experience in the division is scant, his expertise as a drivers seems to be making up for it.

“I got a lot of laps here with a Pro Stock, so I guess that didn’t hurt at all,” Ladouceur said. “We got a good time trial, we got a good draw, and we were racing with a lot of good, clean drivers so we stayed out of ant messes.”

Boyd MacTavish started second and held on to that spot until the end. Rounding out the top five were Nick Guererri in fourth and Tyler Dippel in fifth.

The DIRTcar Sportsman Modified Series continues Monday, July 1, at Cornwall Motor Speedway where it will join the DIRTcar 358-Modified Series and the DIRTcar Pro Stock Series for a Canada Day special.

The season continues at Rolling Wheels Raceway Park, Central New York’s “Fast Track,” with the Sprint Car Summer Shootout Wednesday, July 3. The Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprints will join 305 Sprint Cars and DIRTcar Stock Cars to celebrate Independence Day.
