It was yet another hot night of Racing at Auburndale Speedway as veteran Dave Dunkin continued his dominanace of the Sportsman class while Nick Hernandez and Bobby Mobley picked up their first wins of 2010 in the Auburndale Trucks and Street Stocks.

Dunkin was pretty much in a class to himself as he picked up yet another Sportsman win and added to his point lead. Austin Carr, second in points, blew the engine in his car during the heat race and had to set out the feature. Carr wasn’t the only driver to uncork and engine in the heat as Chuck Harrison, Jr. did likewise making for a very long eight lap race requiring two major clean-up efforts.

After winning the heat, Dunkin grabbed the lead at the start of the feature and simply drove away as second place Mark Medeiros kept him in sight but could never mount a challenge. Brett Jenkins took third spot ahead of Richard Elkins, Jr. (in a brand new car) and Josh Todd. Richard Fiore was unhurt after he rode the wall from the exit of turn four all the way to turn one on lap six bringing out the only caution flag of the race.

The Auburndale Trucks were back in action and put on an excellent show. Heat winner Roger Blevins led the opening 13 laps but could not hold off a hard-charging Nick Hernandez who snared the lead and eventual win. Keith Lilley’s win streak was stopped at two as the owner of the truck he’d been driving, Wally Warrick, got behind the wheel for the first time this year and was running well before being forced out by mechanical issues.

Trailing Hernandez and Blevins to the checker were Brent Tyler, Jim Cowhey, Jr. and Tommy King.

After having a pair of “guest” drivers the last two weeks, Bobby Mobley got behind the wheel of his Street Stock once again and promptly claimed his first win of the year.

Heat winners Matt McCrary and Dave Colpritt started from the front row with Colpritt heading the pack for five circuits before Mobley motored past him. From that point Mobley was in control as he claimed the victory trailed by Colpritt, McCrary, Cody McDuffie and Josh Todd. Kyle Hall, Ken Lawrence, point leader Jeff Waterman, Kyle Peters and Chris Spring completed the top ten.

The Legend Car feature was a real barn-burner slowed just twice for minor spins. First heat winner Dave Gleason jumped to an early lead but saw it last just six laps before Justin Brown snuck by for the top position. Brown was looking strong but point leader Gerald White, Jr. had other ideas and took over the lead on lap 16 never to be headed.

Gleason came back to finish second and score a great finish for the “over 40 set” that compete for separate Masters Division points on a national basis. Fellow “Master” Lynn Wiles, who picked up the second heat win, took the checker in third followed by Devin McLeod and Jake Perkins. Rounding out the top ten were Mason Ketterman, Bryan Silas (coming off a ninth place finish in the ARCA race at Michigan the day before), Dakota Baggette, Eric Eichelberger and Zach Napoleon.

Chris Spring notched yet another Mini Stock win going wire to wire in a feature run without a caution flag. Spring’s arch-rival Fred Harrison, Jr. was a close second trailed by Jason Rendell, Gary Brown, Jr. (just up from the Scarambler class in a sharp-looking new car) and Shawn Jenkins. Spring also won the heat.

Larry Chumney II also scored a flag to flag victory in the V-8 Bomber feature topping James Wright, Sr., Preston Davis, Josh Borem and Buddy Phillips, Jr.

Teddy Lively won his second straight Bandolero feature over Mark Bibeau, Andy Metz and Cameron White.

Next Saturday night, June 19, the Late Models return for another 100 laps of fast racing action along with the Kids Club, Mini Cups, Sportsman, Mini Stocks, V-8 Bombers, Legends, and Bandeleros. Racing starts at 7 PM. For more information call 863-551-1131 or log on to www.auburndaleracing.com.
