Determination to race pays off at Bubba Raceway Park,
The fans came out in force despite the early rains for action from the Late Models, UMP Open-Wheel Modifieds, Gladiators, and Florida Mini Sprints Association. With all of Florida rained out, Bubba made the call to put the cars on the clay, and the racing showed how appreciative the drivers were. Only the Late Models were racing for double points as the rest of the divisions will have their own double points nights later in the season.
The UMP Open-Wheel Modifieds started with a spin from Cory Hupp in turn 4 that brought out the yellow. On the restart a few cars were out of line and they would re-stack the field and be on their way. Jeff Mathews and Kyle Bronson went low into turn 1 and Mathews went around after some contact between the drivers.
Open-wheel modifieds put on another great show.
Bronson would not continue, but Mathews would. With 10 laps to go, Jamie Carter stopped on the backstretch and the yellow waved. A quick push refired the 75 and he was on his way. After 5 laps, Ronald Soltis and Paul Sizemore made heavy contact down the frontstretch, and Sizemore spun. Under caution, Jason Davis and Jeff Mathews collided in turn 4, but Mathews received his spot back. Davis would be done after the contact. A 2 lap sprint occurred before Larry Burkins spun his 54 and set up a 3 lap dash for the flag. PJ Wiggins had the task of keeping the field behind him and he did. Wiggins won his first of the season at Bubba Raceway Park while Ivedent Lloyd, Jr. took 2nd, Ronald Soltis was 3rd, Jeff Mathews dug hard for 4th, and “Cracker” Jim Smith was 5th.
The Florida Mini Sprints Association put on another great show at Bubba Raceway Park and produced another first-time winner in 2011. Unfortunately, on the very first lap Dirk Miller flipped his Todd’s Tomatoes #68 in turn 2. Miller was okay and walked to the pits on his own power. After the restart, Alan Craig spun the 55 and the whole field had to take evasive action. Harold Matthews went around on lap 7 and brought out another yellow flag. Jody McKenzie’s 18 machine stopped on the backstretch and brought out the final yellow flag. The final 7 laps had an intense batle for the win between Gavin Thomas and Eddie Moss. Thomas beat Moss by half a door, with David Hall in 3rd, Eddie Moss, Jr. 4th, and Pete Smith went home 5th.
Late Model action at Bubba Raceway Park is always intense, but even more so for $4000 and double points. Turn 1 lap 1. Matt Hartley and Adam Parrish ended their nights in a collision that included 3rd place in points Tyler Ivey. Ivey continued to a top 10 finish.
Whitener outdueled Lloyd in the LM feature
After an 11 lap run, the yellow came out for a spin by Johnny Collins after contact with the lapped car of Len Parrish. “IceMan” Austin Kirkpatrick slowed and spun the 11 trying to get off course, but was unable to get to a safe position and that would bring the yellow out on lap 17. The final 23 laps were run without a yellow. Mark Whitener and Ivedent Lloyd, Jr., both champions, battled for the lead, but Shan Smith was gaining until smoke started from behind the 99W, and at that point, Smith pulled it off and called it a night. Into turn 3 on the final lap, Ivedent Lloyd, Jr. gained a lot of ground, but there was still clay between Whitener and Lloyd as Whitener won the event. Lloyd was 2nd, Dillon Wood took 3rd, David Browning was a strong 4th, and Johnny Collins put the 5 in position number 5.
Bubba Raceway Park’s Gladiators took to the clay and produced a first time winner. On lap 6 Frank Lapore slowed while Troy Sullivan spun at the other end of the course. Both were done for the night. Kody Fisher spun after the restart and the yellow flew. The final 8 laps were run under green and Jonathan Green took his first win of 2011. Brandon Haseleu was 2nd, Jerry Taylor in 3rd, Richard Todd went home 4th, and Robert Graham grabbed a top 5.
