Merritt Island, FL (September 21, 2010)  Last weekend my son Alex and I took a road trip to Auburndale Speedway.  It has been a number of years since I was last at Auburndale, probably when Alex was around eleven years old and soon will be eighteen so it has definitely been awhile.

After getting somewhat lost in Winter Haven and going the wrong way, I was smart enough to find a sign that said this way to toll road and stopped and asked if I was even close to the speedway.  A very nice young lady said yes mam, it is only four lights and two turns from here and she got us there just fine.

We arrived at the speedway about 5:45, had no problems getting our VIP bands, and found a place to sit and watch qualifying.
Because of the 100 lap Late Model race that night, all of the classes qualified for their feature races except the Kids Club and Mini Cups.

All of the classes had a good car count and as it got closer and closer to race time, the stands begin to fill up and that is just what they did.  By 7:00, if you did not have a seat, you really had to look for one.  Nice to see such a full grandstand.

Twenty one cars went out for qualifying for the Late Model race with a few familiar faces in the crowd – Rusty Ebersole, Donny Williams, Tim Russell, Daniel Webster, and Sean Bass just to name a few.  A very good field and a challenging race track for sure.

Several times the clean-up crews had their hands full with blown engines but they never faulted and cleaned the track as fast as they could with help from owner Rex Guy who definitely did not mind getting dirty.

The races took alittle longer than normal I was told before they were over, but all in all, we had a fabulous time at Auburndale and I would highly recommend fans going there for an exciting night of racing.    The admission is very fair, the food is good, and the bathrooms are very, very clean although someone was stealing the toilet paper faster than they could replace it but that was not the track’s fault.

So if you have a Saturday night free and are wondering where to go, try Auburndale Speedway.   It is definitely worth a try.
