COKER TOPS LEGEND CARS AT ORLANDO SPEEDWORLD – HINDMAN HOLDS ON IN STRICTLY STOCKS

orlandospeedworld800Week number three of the 2014 season saw plenty of action at Orlando SpeedWorld as the weather finally felt more “Florida like” than the first pair of race nights.

Darin Coker made the trip up from the Southwest part of the State along with teammate Keith Sinkula and they ended up one-two in the 25-Lap Legend Car feature.  Robbie Lyons, the previous weeks’ winner, grabbed the early advantage and did everything he could to hold off an early charge by Sinkula who took second from Dave Gleason on lap four.  David Owen looped his car to bring out the caution on lap seven and was sent to the rear of the field for the restart.  As the field took the green flag again, Coker slipped by his teammate and took off after Lyons.  After some really good racing, Coker pulled ahead on lap 14 bringing Sinkula with him.  A lap 17 caution for a Mark Bibeau spin didn’t slow Coker as he became the third Legend Car feature winner in as many weeks.  Sinkula came home second with Lyons third and Bibeau recovered to take fourth spot ahead of Whitney Poole, who made her first Legend Car start a good one driving Owen’s back up car.  Bob Lyons took sixth with Gleason and Owen rounding out the finishers although neither was still running at the end. Abreu Claims First World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series Victory

Californian cruised into victory lane at Thunderbowl Raceway

031514_RICO_WINSTULARE, Calif. – March 15, 2014 – Rico Abreu earned the biggest victory of his career on Saturdaynight when he powered to the checkered flag at Thunderbowl Raceway for his first World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series victory.

Abreu took the lead from Terry McCarl on lap eight, and then had to hold off veterans McCarl and Joey Saldana to earn the victory.

Rookie Logan Schuchart followed up a strong run on Friday night by eventually finishing second after making a daring late pass to the outside of McCarl on the banked one-third mile dirt oval. McCarl, who set quick time and then became the first driver to benefit from the “0” being pulled in the dash draw, settled for third after coming back from a near wreck on a restart. Sammy Swindell finished a season-best fourth while two-time event winner in 2014, Brad Sweet, was fifth.

Abreu made the pass on McCarl for the lead on lap 8 in turn one in his Abreu Vineyards #24. Abreu then had to defend the position on a restart for the first time on lap 11 after Cody Darrah brought out a red with a wreck in turn one. (more…)

Courtney Force Eyeing Turnaround In Florida

National Speed Sport News, GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Funny Car standout Courtney Force has watched her John Force Racing teammates start the 2014 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series in impressive fashion.

Her legendary father, John, has kept the momentum from his 16th Funny Car world championship a year ago, winning the first race of the season and grabbing the points lead. Robert Hight posted a final round appearance in Phoenix and sits second in points, while Force’s sister, Brittany, advanced to her first career final round in Phoenix as well.

Meanwhile, Courtney is still searching for her first round win, something she hopes comes this weekend at the tradition-rich Amalie Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals, March 13-16, at Auto-Plus Raceway at Gainesville.

Things haven’t exactly gone as planned for the ultra-popular Force and her 8,000-horsepower Traxxas Ford Mustang Funny Car, but she knows things can change quickly in the world of 300-mph Funny Cars.

“In this sport it’s easy to be on top one weekend hoisting a Wally and out in the first round the week after,” Force said. “That’s why it’s important to stay positive because things can always turn around at the next event. My Traxxas Ford Mustang team is ready and excited to go to Gainesville and I have high hopes after testing we will be able to start turning things around.” (more…)
