Billy Moyer Dominates at Highland

The Series Returns to Action Sunday at Quincy Raceways

moyerhighlandHIGHLAND, Ill. – July 9, 2016 – Billy Moyer dominated Saturday night’s DIRTcar Summer Nationals feature at Highland Speedway as he scored his 93rd career series victory and third of the 2016 season.

Devin Gilpin started on the pole but Moyer very quickly took over the top spot and steadily built and insurmountable lead. Through 30-laps Moyer extended his lead at one point to nearly half a track length over Gilpin and current points leader and reigning series champion Bobby Pierce.

Four cautions waved throughout the feature but Moyer held tough. He scored victory with Gilpin in second and Pierce in third.

“We changed a couple of things on the car today,” Moyer said. “We had to redeem ourselves as bad as we’ve been the last couple of days. It ran like it was supposed to tonight. It felt good.” (more…)

Gibson, Bass take victories at Desoto Speedway

sean bassSCOTT LOCKWOOD – Kenny Gibson and Sean Bass outlasted the competition – and the sweltering heat – to take victories in the main events on an action-packed night at Desoto Speedway on Saturday.

Gibson and Jeff Firestine, who set the third and fastest times in qualifying respectively, started 10th and 12th in the 21-car field after a 12-car inversion. The pair wasted no time charging to the front of the field and were both in the top five by the time the caution flew for Joe Gerard’s fire on lap seven. After a rash of caution flags and a restart on lap 17, Firestine went from fifth to first by passing Gibson and then with a dramatic three-wide pass of early leader Travis Barfield and Mike Rowland. He was pulling away from the field when a debris caution flew on lap 24.

James Nanney used a series of cautions and restarts to work his way up to second place. He spent several laps on Firestine’s rear bumper before losing a little ground to the leader. Firestine was starting to catch the back of the field when a rear tire flew off Danny Daniels’ car right in front of the leaders to bring out another caution. Nanney was in position to challenge Firestine for the lead in the final laps before nearly spinning off turn four. Nanney’s misfortune moved Gibson up to second behind Firestine, who crossed the line first for an apparent victory. However, Firestine’s car failed post-race technical inspection, which handed the victory to Gibson – his first win of the season in the Street Stocks. (more…)

Donny Schatz Scores Lucky No. 13 at FVP Outlaws at Cedar Lake

Scores His Fifth Career Outlaws Win at Cedar Lake

070916SchatzCedarVLNEW RICHMOND, Wisc. – July 9, 2016 – Donny Schatz and Brad Sweet battled throughout much of Saturday night’s FVP Outlaws at Cedar Lake feature at Cedar Lake Speedway, as they traded the lead back and forth through lapped traffic and cautions, but it was Schatz who held tough to score his 13th World of Outlaws Craftsman® Sprint Car Series victory of the season.

“I’ve got to thank these guys,” Schatz said. “They’re incredible in what they do.”

Schatz, who closed out the previous night at Cedar Lake with a close second place run, jumped out to an early lead in Saturday night’s main event with Sweet hot on his trail. Through the first five laps, Sweet looked for a way around but Schatz held tough.

The first caution of the night came out on lap 13 and on the restart, Schatz and Sweet resumed their battle as David Gravel began challenging Willie Croft for third. Gravel eventually took over the third spot with a pass on the high side off of turn two.

Meanwhile, Sweet was throwing sliders on Schatz through turns one and two. On lap 13, he made it stick but Schatz battled back by. The next lap, Sweet did it again, but this time, held the position. (more…)

Briscoe Best at Iowa, Benjamin Delivers, Burton Learns

Briscoe Wins at IowaTOLEDO, Ohio (July 11, 2016) – Cunningham Motorsports had a pretty good eye when they scoped out Chase Briscoe and ultimately scooped him out of the sprint car ranks and put him in one of the team’s stock cars.

Any way you shake it, it was a risk to put an untried, inexperienced and unfunded sprint car driver in the seat of the 77. But, as it turns it, it was a pretty darn good move on the chess board and on the part of Cunningham co-owners Briggs Cunningham and Kerry Scherer.

And it all comes full circle in a couple weeks when the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards returns to Lucas Oil Raceway for the Sioux Chief PowerPEX® 200 presented by Jive coming July 22. Lucas Oil is where Briscoe made his ARCA Racing Series debut in 2015. Driving a fourth Cunningham car, Briscoe finished 10th. If he didn’t set the world on fire in his first attempt, Cunningham took another chance with him at Salem where he finished fifth.

Enter 2016 where Briscoe has become the talk of the town as he continues to pad his point lead after winning Saturday night’s ABC Supply 150 at Iowa Speedway, a track he had only known from an iRacing computer game.

“Fortunately, Iowa Speedway is just like it is on iRacing,” Briscoe said in the Iowa Media Center after the race. (more…)

Ray Bollinger Scores Number Two with Farmer City Win

The Series Returns to Action on Saturday at Highland (Ill.) Speedway

070816BollingerVLFARMER CITY, Ill. – July 8, 2016 – Ray Bollinger scored his second DIRTcar Summit Racing Equipment Modified Nationals victory in a week Friday night as he held off Mike Harrison to win at Farmer City (Ill.) Raceway.

Bollinger started on the feature pole but a fierce battle was underway right behind him between Harrison and Kenny Wallace who looked to hang on to their respective positions and challenge Bollinger for the lead.

As Bollinger pulled away and Harrison settled into second, Michael Long battled passed Wallace and worked to reel in Harrison.

Through traffic in the final laps, Bollinger had his hands full with Harrison right behind. It was Bollinger though who crossed the finish in first.

“Farmer City’s track, that was awesome,” Bollinger said. “That was great. That was a helluva lot of passing through the lapped cars there. I was so worried Harrison or Wallace was coming, I just kept praying for the end to come and we had it at the end.”

Bloomquist Takes Grassy Smith Memorial at Cherokee Speedway

2016news_7-8GAFFNEY, SC (July 8, 2016) – Scott Bloomquist won his third straight Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series event on Friday Night at Cherokee Speedway by leading all but one lap of the main event. After a 4-hour rain delay, the standing room only crowd saw Bloomquist take the win in the Grassy Smith Memorial, also marking his 70th career LOLMDS win.

Casey Roberts came home in second, followed by Johnny Pursley, Brandon Sheppard, and 18th-starting Jonathan Davenport.

Chris Madden managed to lead lap 18, marking the only lead change throughout the long battle between himself and Bloomquist. Madden took the lead in heavy traffic much to the pleasure of his home-track crowd, but under the ensuing caution Madden’s right rear tire went flat and he was forced to pit. He never returned to the track.

“I know we have finished later at some tracks,” said the winner after the race that ended at about 3:20 am local time. “At the start, I kind of just settled in on the bottom. I really couldn’t see where the cushion was. I think we were still fast enough and could have gotten it done.” (more…)
