Halloween Spooktacular

By- Jim Rouse (10-22-12) Ocala, FL – The RaceCar Engineering Late Models will take the tops off this week and the Twisted Tea Top Gun Sprint Cars will go wingless while the Hobby Stocks, 1-800-ASK GARY Thunder Stocks, and Rent-N-Roll Gladiators make it a wild night with 5 spooktacular divisions. There will also be a Trick-Or-Treat on the frontstretch and a costume contest!

Matt Kurtz is putting up numbers not seen since Danny Martin, Jr. all of 1 year ago. Kurtz almost seems unstoppable at this moment but he has Martin, Mark Ruel, Jr., AJ Maddox, Stephen Darvalics, and Tyler Godwin chasing him down. In fact, Kurtz has 5 wins while those 5 have just 1 each (at Bubba Raceway Park)! Do not, however, count out drivers like former champion Ryan Partin, legendary Robbie Smith, and consistent Tony Agin. It’s up to the field to stop the Jacksonville Jet from flying away. Oh, and, he hasn’t lost yet when the wings are off in 2012.

Mark Whitener is looking for his 2nd title in 3 years at Bubba Raceway Park and he has a solid lead. Bo Allen and Ivedent Lloyd, Jr. are chasing him and could spoil the party quickly. Richard Ferry, Christian Augspurger, and Jason Fitzgerald have put up some big points and they’ve won big races in a division that seems more wide open than usual. Tyler Ivey, Jeff Mathews, and Keith Nosbisch have also visited Coor’s Light Winner’s Circle in 2012 as they show that for the first time in a few years the division is anyone’s to win in. (more…)

Shelnut Makes it Two in a Row

It was a great night of racing, after having to cancel a few races due to nowhere to park the fans, due to flooded parking. Mother Nature was kind this week and the fans were treated to great side by side, door to door racing action at the Punta Gorda Speedway.

T.Q. Midget were the first feature of the night, the 63 of Mike Bleusar jumped out to the lead and never looked back. The T.Q.’s ran their twenty five lap feature, caution free,  Bleusar stayed on the gas while being chased by Rob “the cowboy” Kohler. David Patterson from Port Charlotte had a fast car coming in second in the heat but adjusted on the car for the feature and had to settle for fifth while Jamie Barnum came home third.

Legends also ran caution free and saw the 7 of Mike Verhaagh out of Fort Myers run start to finish while being chased down by Tony Steinbuck of Tamarac. Carl Haag of Port St Lucie would finish third.

Cowboy Cadillac gave the fans some action as they always do, running bumper to bumper and door to door. Mike Bialecki of Arcadia had a fast truck and was dominating till eight to go, when a caution came out and trucks got tangled, sending Bialecki to the pits to change a flat tire. Bialecki  pitting gave the lead over to John Pummell Jr. and it took Bialecki one lap to get back to second and fight for the win with Pummell. It was John Pummell Jr from Arcadia that came home first, Mike Bialecki second and Trey Almand of Port Charlotte third. (more…)

The night got started off with time trial qualifying for the Open Wheel Modified division, to help set the field for their 75 lap feature event. After the fan determined 3 row invert for the feature, the front row would be occupied by Kyle Maynard (127) and Curtis Neumann (01). Maynard would see his night end early with steering damaged suffered in the warm up laps for the feature took the green. This would move the inside row up, and now put Grimm on the pole position. At the drop of the green the top two drivers would race door to door before Neumann would find the traction he needed to power to the lead in the outside lane. Smith had settled into the third position on the start, and soon put the pressure on Grimm for 2nd. Smith would move make an inside move on Grimm for 2nd,  and sneak by to take the runner up spot. Smith then set his sights on the leader Neumann, and challenge for the lead by lap 12. Smith would again take to the inside lane, forcing Neumann to the high side, where he was slowed by lapped traffic. Smith would use the lapped cars to his advantage, and take the lead away at lap 13. Neumann would fall all the way to the 4th position before he could get back in line behind the leaders. (more…)

CRA Watermelon Twin 100’s Offer Exciting Show for Fans & Redemption for Drivers

October 27th Show to Have Both Pro & Super Late Models

Anderson Bowen was more than excited to see the ARCA / CRA Super Series and the JEGS / CRA All-Stars Tour make plans to return to Watermelon Capital Speedway for the Watermelon Twin 100’s on October 27th. Bowen started his 2012 season at the Georgia facility in the JEGS series opener as a part of the SpeedFest event. However, the day lasted just one lap not showcasing his talent. Now some 10 months later, Bowen is fresh off finishing third in the final JEGS/CRA All-Stars Series title chase and winning Rookie of the Year honors and ready for another shot at Watermelon Capital.

“Since we left Watermelon, We have been to 20 different tracks across the country,” explained the 15-year-old from Suwanee, Georgia. “I’ve run with some of the best short track racers out there and we have learned a lot. We have led a lot of laps, won poles and even broke the track record at Winchester. Now we’re ready to go out and win races.”

Bowen ran the Pro Late Model race in January during SpeedFest weekend, but this time he will run both cars as he is fresh off his first official Super Late Model race in the Winchester 400. Bowen qualified on the outside of the front row for one of the biggest Super Late Model races in the country.

“I love going to Watermelon,” said Bowen. “I have a lot of laps around that place and have won many races there in a Bandolero and Pro Challenge. I have a lot of family members and friends who are planning on attending since this track is pretty close compared to where we have been racing all season.” (more…)

Keith Nosbisch Returns To Victory Lane At East Bay Raceway Park

October 20, 2012 – Tampa, FL – Late Models, Gagel’s Open Wheel Modifieds, Street Stocks, Outlaw Fours and V8 Warriors were all here tonight at The Clay by the Bay.

The first feature of the night went to the Street Stocks. Garry Sheffield and Tim Powers won their heat races and made up the front row for the feature event. Tim Powers took the early lead, but on lap three, the red came out as Jimmy Baker and Kenny Myers tangled on the front stretch. Both drivers were ok, but Myers was not able to continue.  Several cautions came out throughout  the race until the final caution as points leader Eric Moon and Donnie Reed tangled in turn two. When the final green waved, Tim Powers picked up his second feature win here at East Bay for the 2012 Season. Matthew Grissom, Dennis Wilson, Jr., Buck Woodhouse and Brian Morgan rounded out the top five.

Outlaw Fours were next with Billy Howard and Jesse Foster winning their heat races. For the feature event it was a pair of young drivers making up the front row, Brandon Yates and Megan Meyer. Yates took the early lead until Meyer spun in turn two after running third. On the restart, Yates continued to lead, but on lap five Yates and Hohlbaugh tangled sending Hohlbaugh to the pits. With only one more caution coming out, Foster was able to take over the top spot and go on to win his very first feature  at East Bay Raceway Park.
