World of Outlaws Late Model Series News & Notes: Wrapping Up The 39th Annual DIRTcar Nationals by UNOH

BARBERVILLE, FL – Feb. 15, 2010 –

BREAKING THROUGH: Before the start of Saturday night’s DIRTcar Nationals by UNOH finale at Volusia Speedway Park, Brady Smith stood by an Arizona Sports Shirts merchandise trailer behind the track’s grandstand and talked about his winless 2009 season on the World of Outlaws Late Model Series and his hopes of ending the dry spell in 2010.

Several hours later, Smith’s frustrating pursuit of his first checkered flag as a WoO LMS regular was over. He dominated the tour’s 50-lap A-Main, rolling to a victory that clearly showed he’s ready to be a title contender in his second campaign on the road with the Outlaws. (more…)

Michael Cherry Wins Crazy Figure 8’s at Citrus County Speedway

By: Phil Schryver

Inverness, FL (February 13, 2010)  The weather was frigid, but the racing action was as hot as ever last night at Citrus County Speedway.

The first feature event of the night was the four cylinder stocks. On the pole was the #21 of Phil Edwards, starting second was the #26 of Nathan Florian, and third was the #47 of Richard Kuhn.

The first caution of the race was brought out when the #71 of Sonya Heater, and the #79 of Wayne Heater made contact and spun in turn 2. They are father and daughter, and were both done for the night unfortunately after their wreck. The #32 of Jeremy Sharrone, who had started 5th, had taken an early lead in the race and went on to win the feature. (more…)

Bo Hartley tops TBARA at Desoto Super Speedway

by Marty Little/Tom Blakeley

BRADENTON, Fla. – Bo Hartley notched his second 30 lap TBARA feature victory during the four race winter tour on a bitterly cold Saturday night at DeSoto Super Speedway.

Hartley started the main event fourth in the 23 car field while outside front row starter D.J.Hoelzle powered his self-built mount into the lead at the drop of the green with a snarling field on their heels. The action on the track was anything but cold as the winged speedsters worked the high banked oval with close action throughout.

As the laps wound down Hoelzle had Hartley hot on his tail with Joey Aguilar, up from seventh, a close third. With six laps to go Hartley made his move on Hoelzle to wrestle away the top spot. Hoelzle stayed on the hammer to maintain second in front of Aguilar and they crossed the strip in close formation ahead of Shane Butler and Dude Teate in the caution free run.

Heat race wins fell to Tommy Nichols, Bo Hartley and Aguilar. For winning his heat race and the main event Hartley collected the Steele Performance Parts Sweep award, the first time it’s been done this season.

Top-Fifteen at Daytona for Sean Murphy

Daytona Beach, FL – Feb 13, 2010.  Sean Murphy had high expectations coming to Daytona for his third at-tempt at winning the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series NextEra Energy Resources 250. Sean’s previous races at Daytona ended in finishes of 24th and 20th. With a new truck, a new Crew Chief and a new sponsor in Dietz & Watson Premium Meat Delicacies, Murphy knew his chances of improving on those finishes at the World Center of Racing were very good.

Thursday night the native of Ft Lauderdale, FL qualified the No. 07 in the 34th position with a best lap of 52.35 seconds, not quite what the SS Green Light team had hoped for from the new truck. “We built this truck with a lot of down force so I knew we would not qualify up front, I was hoping for a little better than that,” said Crew Chief Jason Miller. “Sean is real comfortable in the draft and that is more important for me, it’s a long race.”

Following Friday night’s rainout, NASCAR officials moved the race to Saturday evening and before the green flag even flew Murphy was in trouble having made contact with another truck on the warm-up lap heavily dam-aging the left side of the Dietz & Watson Chevy. Sean was forced to pitroad for repairs before the race ever started and would have to run the entire race with an aerodynamically handicapped race truck.

Despite the damage, the Dietz & Watson No.07 ran fairly well in the draft as long as he stayed in line behind other trucks. Miller told Sean to hang back and stay out of more troubles until the end of the race. Two large melees typical at Daytona thinned the field and attrition moved Murphy up the running order into the top-15 where he smartly kept out of harms way waiting to make a move to the front at the finish.

Sean reached a high of third place just following pit stops at the races three-quarter mark and was running in the top-ten with less than five laps to go. He was ready for a charge to the front when Ryan Sieg blew a tire directly in front of him with only three laps remaining. Sean had to check-up to avoid the slowing truck in front of him and despite not making contact with Sieg, Murphy had slowed enough to loose the draft of the lead pack, drop-ping back to the thirteenth position without any drafting help to work back to the front pack.

Crew Chief Miller was proud of his young driver after the race. “Sean did a great job driving a damaged truck right from the start, he followed the plan of hanging back and staying out of harms way perfectly. If he had not got caught behind the 39 right there at the end, who knows where he could have finished. I’m proud of him and the whole SS Green Light team, they did a great job tonight.”

Murphy, suffering from flu-like symptoms all day was pleased with the top-15 finish. “There were a lot of torn-up race trucks out there tonight. That deal at the start really gave us a handicap with the aero on the truck, but I managed to stay out of trouble the rest of the way and I really thought we were going to get out of here with a top-ten.

“I really want to thank Dietz & Watson for coming on board with us and I hope that they will join us again. The blue, red and gold make a great looking truck. Plus the team had a great lunch of beef, ham, turkey and various cheeses before the race.”

Brady Smith Breaks Into World of Outlaws Late Model Series Victory Lane In Finale Of DIRTcar Nationa

Brady Smith won’t go winless on the World of Outlaws Late Model Series in 2010.

The rising star from Solon Springs, Wis., made sure of that on Saturday night, capturing the national tour’s 50-lap A-Main that closed the 39th annual DIRTcar Nationals by University of Northwestern Ohio at Volusia Speedway Park.

Winless in 2009 during his first season as a WoO LMS regular, Smith broke through with a dominant performance in front of a chilled Sunshine State crowd. He fell to third place early in the distance after starting from the pole position but rallied to pass Billy Moyer of Batesville, Ark., for the lead on lap 20 and run then run away from the pack.

“It feels great to finally win one these Outlaw races again,” said Smith, whose two previous WoO LMS triumphs came during the 2008 season. “It’s so hard to win these races. I know we’re capable of doing it, but we raced the whole season last year and didn’t get it done, so to be able to do it here at Speedweeks – man, it’s actually harder to win a race down here than it is all season.

“We’re just really thrilled. This gives everyone a boost – me, the crew, the sponsors and definitely my bank account.”

Driving his Team Zero by Bloomquist car with a Vic Hill engine under the hood, Smith crossed the finish line with a winning margin of 2.456 seconds over Earl Pearson of Jacksonville, Fla., in the Bobby Labonte Motorsports MasterSbilt mount. Pearson was unable to challenge Smith following a lap-37 restart, leaving him with a runner-up finish in both WoO LMS events run during the DIRTcar Nationals by UNOH.

Tim McCreadie of Watertown, N.Y., registered a hard-earned third-place finish, charging forward from the 28th starting position in the Sweeteners Plus Rocket. Behind the wheel of his backup car after driveline woes sidelined his primary machine during heat action, he gained entry to the A-Main through a provisional spot granted to the highest-ranked non-qualified driver in the DIRTcar Nationals by UNOH points standings.

Opening-night WoO LMS winner Josh Richards of Shinnston, W.Va., who started third, finished fourth in the Rocket Chassis house car – good enough to hand him the DIRTcar Nationals by UNOH Late Model championship for the second consecutive year. Shannon Babb of Moweaqua, Ill., completed the top five after starting seventh in the Sheltra Construction Rocket.

Saturday All Star Race at East Bay Has Been Cancelled

TAMPA, FL…..2/13/10…..Wet grounds and cold weather on Saturday forced Miracle Motorsports to cancel the final All Star Sprint Car race scheduled for tonight at East Bay Raceway Park.

The series was able to race on Thursday when Mark Smith managed his first win at East Bay over a field of 35 cars.  Friday night rain washed out the entire show.

The East Bay Winternationals continues with the NeSmith Late Models set for February 18, 19 and 20.  They will be joined by the Mod Lites.  The following weekend brings the ASCS 360 Sprints and the Florida Mini Sprints on February 25, 26 and 27.

On March 3rd through the 5th, the UMP/NASRA Late Models will be in town to wrap up the Winternationals before the regular season starts here on March 13.3
