Top Late Models Highlight Ocala’s Opening Night

by BJ Cavin
As many racers and fans are discovering, many things have changed since 2009, and opening night at Florida’s oldest speedway will introduce many such changes for 2010.  And when the Sunoco United Dirt Late Model Challenge Series hits the clay at Ocala Speedway this Friday night, March 5th, fans will discover that change is a very good thing, as the name of the series that traditionally opens the season at Ocala will be mostly the same, and yet the series will be different in many other ways.

The first thing that fans will notice is the addition of Sunoco to the name of the top late model series in the region.  Series director Ken Kinney says the addition of a new title sponsor opens a new beginning for the Sonoco United Dirt Late Model Challenge Series, and creates options for new ideas that will make the series even stronger and more exciting to follow.  Manufactured home builder Jacobsen Homes of Safety Harbor has also come on board as a major sponsor for 2010. Shaffer Makes it Two-for-Two in ASCS Rebel Action at East Bay

Lonnie Wheatley, TAMPA, Fla. (February 26, 2010) – Tim Shaffer made it two wins in as many nights of “Kings” competition at East Bay Raceway Park’s 34th Annual Winter Nationals by charging to the winner’s circle in Friday night’s 25-lap American Sprint Car Series Rebel Region preliminary main event. The veteran Aliquippa, PA, hotshoe solidly established himself as a favorite for Saturday night’s $14,500 to win Ninth Annual Ronald Laney Memorial with his second win in a row aboard the Kistler-powered C&H Motorsports No. 83 J&J.

And for the second night in a row, it as Canadian Lou Kennedy, Jr., that Shaffer chased down for the lead. But, after a late move on Thursday night, Shaffer needed just four laps to race from his fifth starting position into the lead on Friday night.

While traffic was a factor much of the way after the race’s lone caution appeared after seven laps, it did little to deter Shaffer’s winning pace. “The car was so good, I could move around where they weren’t.”

Shaffer was ultimately chased to the stripe by defending Ronald Laney Memorial winner Jesse Hockett, who took second away from Kennedy at the midway point.

Danny Smith claimed the show position, with Tony Bruce, Jr., and Mark Smith rounding out the top five.

Travis Rilat was sixth, with Kennedy, Gary Wright, Tommy Worley, Jr., and Wayne Johnson completing the top ten.

Shaffer, Kennedy, Tony Bruce, Jr., Rilat and Hockett topped Friday night’s heat race action, with Glenn Styres, Chris Williams and J.D. Johnson winning the “B” Mains.

With two nights of ASCS Rebel Region action in the books at East Bay Raceway Park, Shaffer stands undefeated with two heat race wins and two main events leading into Saturday night’s Ninth Annual Ronald Laney Memorial.

The originally posted winner’s share of $10,000 has been boosted to $14,500. An extra $7,000 has been added to the purse by the Laney family, with an extra $4,000 to first, $2,000 to second and $1,000 to third. C&B Mushroom Farms has also added an extra $500 to the top spot, with an extra $500 bonus available for Shaffer as the winner of both prelims. Thus, if Shaffer takes Saturday’s top spot, he would collect $15,000.

Ocala Speedway’ Inaugural World of Outlaw Late Model Series Event on March 19 Introduces Unique Track to National Audience

Ocala, FLBy Kevin Kovac, WoO LMS P.R. Director

Come Fri., March 19, Ocala Speedway will be officially introduced to a national dirt Late Model audience.

Tim Russell Ices 30th annual Icebreaker 100

by Rick Anges

Bradenton, Fl. February in Florida means a lot of different things to a lot of different people but for most of us it just means racing! From the shores of New Smyrna Beach to the depths of the Everglades there was the roar of engines.

For thirty years this has also been the weekend of the Icebreaker at Desoto Super Speedway. Some of the top names in all of stock car racing have run this big late model race.

The drivers that were competing for this years trophy included two governors cup winners, several series champions, current and former NASCAR drivers and more then a few track champs.

Nineteen of Florida’s Top Late Model Aces lined up for their two lap qualifying runs. When it was all said and done the 2009 Governors Cup Champ Tim Russell took the fast time with a 14:698 run around 3/8 mile.

Anthony Campi was second fast followed by Joe Boyd, Jeff Choquette and Justin Larson for the top five.

Three cars were inverted from qualifying putting Joe Boyd on the pole for the 100-lap feature. Three fans from the stand gave the drivers the command to start your engines and field came to life.

Joe Boyd jumped out to the early lead with Russell following in his tire tracks. Meanwhile Choquette and Campi were hard at it for the second spot.

The first of only three cautions was brought out Larry Bryant who backed his car into the turn one wall. On the restart Boyd once again took the top spot but as the race wore on Russell would get around Boyd for the lead.

Boyd would lose the handle on his ride and fade to a disappointing sixteenth place finish on the night. Also having his problems was Jeff Choquette. Choquette who won his first asphalt race at Desoto began to push up in turn four. Campi, the 2009 Hoosier Elite Series champion would soon get by and set his sites on the leader Russell. Choquette would finish the eighth.

The long green flag run was just thing that Russell needed as his car just got better and better as he would add the 30th annual Icebreaker to his already impressive resume and collect over $5,000 for the win. Anthony Campi would come home with an impressive second place run, Justin Larson would run third in this start studded race, fourth would be none other then Darryl Shelnut and fifth went to Chris Fontaine.

Racing 2 Cure set to Debut at 69th Annual Bike Week;

Tuesday, February 23, 2010

Daytona Beach, FL — Racing 2 Cure (R2C) will make its official public debut February 26th through March 7th at the 69th Annual Bike Weeks in Daytona Beach, Florida.  R2C’s founder, 10-year old Hunter Stewart will be in attendance to help raise awareness and funding for the unique non-profit organization.   The interactive Mobile R2C display will be located on Beach Street near the Harley Davidson Corporate area.   Visitors can challenge the Hunter’s score in a race simulator and win prizes.  They will be providing t-shirts and other items for donations.  In addition, visitors of the booth can enter their “Helmets for HELP” raffle program.  R2C will have several Autographed helmets from top NASCAR Drivers and other celebrities.

R2C began as a small action from a then 7-year old Hunter Stewart after learning his Mom [Alycia-34] had Breast Cancer.  As a young off-road racer Hunter took a bucket to the race track and began collecting donations from fans and fellow competitors.  His story grew and eventually landed him as a guest on the Ellen DeGeneres show along with being named a Forbes.com top ten most inspirational people under the age of 18.  Today the Stewart family has formalized Racing 2 Cure as a non-profit organization that focuses on support of what they call the “little” things families need while going through cancer.

“When I was going through Chemo Therapy treatments I was absent from the home mentally and physically.  My kids were basically without a mother,” said Alycia Stewart, who has since dedicated her life’s work to Racing 2 Cure.  “We had family and friends to help out with the little things like doing laundry, making meals, and providing the kids help with schoolwork.  But I’ve met other people going through Cancer that are not as fortunate.  They don’t have anyone to help.  Research is of course important.  We hope that one day we won’t be needed.  But until then we want to help ease the tremendous burden that Cancer brings to a home.”

In partnership with the Susan G. Komen foundation R2C raises funding to provide transportation, meals, tutors for children, house cleaning and general support to single mothers and young children.

“We are excited to have Racing 2 Cure as part of this year’s Bike Week’s festivities,” said Shelly Rossmeyer Pepe, General Manager at Bruce Rossmeyer’s Daytona Harley Davidson.  It further showcases the character of those who attend Bike Week and only adds to the many charity rides and charitable focuses that will take place during the event.”

About Racing 2 Cure (R2C): Racing 2 Cure began as a simple act of then 7-year old Hunter Stewart.  Hunter was starting his off-road racing career when he received troubling news just a few weeks before his first ever race.  His Mom at just 34 years old was diagnosed with Breast Cancer.  In order to maintain a positive focus, the family decided to continue Hunter’s racing.  Inspired to take action Hunter began to donate a portion of his allowance for every race lap he completed.  He also re-designed his race truck to carry the Susan G. Komen logo.  This one-race effort inspired others to take action.  Hunter’s story was largely covered by the media and recognized by public officials, including a guest appearance on the Ellen DeGeneres Show.  The Stewart family formalized Racing 2 Cure into a 501c3 Non-Profit organization registered in the State of North Carolina.  Through their interactive mobile event display R2C raises funding to provide for families in need which are going through cancer.  In addition funds support awareness and research efforts of the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

About The 69th annual Bike Week in Daytona Beach: Kicking off February 26th and roaring through March 7th on Beach Street in Daytona with national bike builders like V-Force, Irish Choppers and Big Dog motorcycles occupying space in Riverfront Park.  Come join Bruce Rossmeyer Harley Davidson in welcoming The Harley Davidson corporate company to Beach Street, who will be occupying over 40,000 square feet of biker hot space, showcasing custom bikes, poker runs, collectibles and other interactive displays. The 69th annual Bike Week on Beach Street in Daytona will be the highlight of this year’s event with interactive displays, free bike parking, bands throughout the week.
