Great Weather and Great Racing at Ocala

by Ocala Speedway Media

All Photos Courtesy of REWINGPHOTOS.COM

Ocala, Fl- An almost perfect night greeted racers and fans at the historic Ocala Speedway on Friday as four racing divisions kicked off their championship points seasons.  Meanwhile back in the pit area the Mini Stock racers in attendance all met privately with Ocala Speedway owner, Mike Peters, to discuss rule changes that could possibly help that division grow stronger.  Several options were voted on, and everyone came away from the meeting feeling confident with the results.

And it was with that in mind that the Mini Stocks opened the night of racing with defending 2009 points champion Paul Combast leading the way.  Combast was looking for a measure of success on the night as his 2010 performance had not yet been up to championship standards, so a heat race win and the pole position for the feature race was a good start.  The only problem was Combast had Keith Briggs, plus Nick and Dan Kerr, all right on his tail, and none of those three like to follow anyone. Easter Bunny Ready to Head to Volusia Speedway Park this Saturday for Easter Fun and Plenty of Racing Action

VSP MEDIA (Jane Smith)

Barberville, FL (March 31, 2010)  It is that time of year when little girls dress up in pretty dresses. little boys don new pants and shirts and the Easter Bunny makes a visit to all the children.  Saturday night at Volusia Speedway Park will see the Easter Bunny make a visit to all the kids with an egg hunt and Easter goodies.  As they say, “Here Comes Peter Cottontail, Hopping Down the Bunny Trail” straight to Volusia Speedway Park.

Children are more than welcome to bring their Easter baskets for Easter fun and the adults will not be left out either as they will see plenty of Easter racing action with the Budweiser (Quality Brands) Open Wheel Modifieds, Taylor Racing Products Sportsman, Daytona Sportswear Street Stocks, Amsoil Thunder Stocks, and 4 Cylinder Challengers.

The Budweiser Open Wheel Modifieds were off last weekend along with the Daytona Sportswear Street Stocks but two weeks ago it was Jamie Carter topping the Modifieds and Trevor Gamble topping the Street Stocks.  That was Carter’s first win of the 2010 season and Gamble’s second win.  Can they make it repeat wins??  You will have to be there to find out.

Although the Daytona Dodge Chrysler Jeep Late Models are off Saturday night at Volusia, it is David Clegg leading the points so far this season over Joe Kump, Jason Davis, Donnie Chappell, and Darell Padett.

Going into Saturday night’s action, it is Jamie Carter leading the Budweiser Open Wheel Modifieds over Jeff Matthews, Larry Burkins, newcomer Garret Stewart and James Smith who are tied in fourth and Dale Murray and Kent Corbin who are tied in fifth.   Both Matthews and Carter have one win under their belts going into Saturday night’s action.

Aaron Barsness won the first two races in the Taylor Racing Products Sportsman division but it was Steve Shead who topped last Saturday night’s feature.  Barsness currently leads the points for the Taylor Racing Products Sportsman over last year’s Champion Shaun Daugharty, Paul Shead, Matt McGillivrary and Steve Shead.

The Daytona Sportswear Street Stocks have seen Trevor Gamble win both of their feature events this year.  Gamble currently is the points leader for the Daytona Sportswear Street Stocks followed by Tim Hughes, Phil Brown, Steve Oldaker and Mark Maresca.

If you were one of the lucky fans who were at Volusia last Saturday, you saw the biggest field of Amsoil Thunder Stocks since the division was started in 2009.  Scott Mooers made it two in a row for the division and is the current point leader over Randy Strehle, Courteney Eubanks, Kelly Snyder, and Robert Calmes, Jr.

The largest field of 4 Cylinder Challengers so far in 2010 put on a great show last Saturday night as Shawn Kosier topped the feature.  Kosier had done what few could do last year and beaten Tony Laporta who won the majority of races last year.  Kosier currently leads the points over Larry Langston, Scott Sullivan, James Smith, Sr., and RJ Glaser.

The Pit Gate will open at 4 pm with the grandstands and drive-in parking opening at 5:30 pm.  General Admission on Saturday night is $12.00, Seniors $10.00, Students 11 – 15 $6.00 and children 10 and under are FREE.  Drive-in parking is $10.00 per car plus General Admission.

Don’t forget, kids bring your Easter Baskets for the Egg Hunt and visit from the Easter Bunny!!!

Volusia Speedway Park is located 15 miles west of Ormond Beach, FL on State Road 40. Additional information and updates will be available on the website – www.volusiaspeedwaypark.com, or call 386-985-4402.

TEN CLASSES SET TO GO SATURDAY NIGHT AT AUBURNDALE – TRUCKS MAKE FIRST START OF THE YEAR

by Dave Westerman

Race fans will certainly get their moneys worth this Saturday night at
Auburndale Speedway as the Auburndale Trucks make their first appearance of the year and will be joined by nine other racing divisions including the Sportsman, Mini Stocks, Street Stocks, V-8 Bombers, Scramblers, Legend Cars, Bandoleros, Dwarf Cars and the Kids Club.

The Trucks are scheduled for a 25 lap feature paying $400 to win. The purse is not subject to the number of trucks entered so expect some typical slam-bang nose-to-tailgate action Saturday evening.

The Sportsman cars return for their third run of the year and everyone is trying to figure out how to beat the “Ancient Wonder” Dave Dunkin. The veteran driver from Lakeland has driven his “Blue Goose” to back-to-back wins and seems to be getting better with age as he knows every nook and cranny of the old speedway.

Youth is being served in the class as young rookie driver Austin Carr is
second in points, some 22 behind Dunkin, and looking better each week. The Mini Stock class now has defending champion Fred Harrison, Jr. tied for the points lead with Chris Spring after his win last week. Both drivers have now scored a pair of victories this year. Chris Narramore, Sr. is third in the point chase, just six back of the leaders.

The Street Stocks are back after a well-deserved week off to pound out a few dents. Rookie Matt McCrary still leads the standings by six points over Jeff Waterman while defending class champion James Wright III is now 18 back of the frontrunner.

Josh Borem continues to have things his way in the V-8 Bombers as he’s opened up a lead of 42 points over second place Buddy Phillips, Jr.
Meanwhile, Kim Gullett has taken over the top spot in the Scramblers by six markers over Matt Johns who has been inactive since a crash three weeks ago. When you win the first three races of the year, it’s a given you’ll be leading the points and that’s just what Jake Perkins is doing in the Legend Car division. Despite his perfect score, Perkins is only six points ahead of Gerald White, Jr. Defending champion Justin Brown and Mason Ketterman are tied for third right now.

NOTES: In honor of the Easter weekend, drivers will be handing out Easter candy during intermission, so make sure to bring the kids. All kids age ten and under, as happens each week, will get an extra ticket as the enter them front gate. Those tickets will give them a chance at winning nice prize packs courtesy of Lindsey’s Little Racers. There is no truth to the rumor that Rex Guy will be dressing up as the Easter Bunny.

The track has announced that the April 17 open-competition Late Model race will pay a whopping $3,000 to win for just 100 laps. Entry fee is $100 but will be adjusted lower for teams traveling 100 miles or more one-way to the speedway.

The second School Bus Figure 8 race of the year is set for next Saturday, April 10.

Lindsey’s Little Racers will be giving away another pair of bicycles on
April 17th.

If you haven’t been to Auburndale Speedway in awhile, one big change is the addition of new speakers on the grandstand side of the race track.

Pit gates open at 2PM this Saturday. Grandstand gates open at 5PM with racing at 7PM.

NOW WATCH RACES ANYTIME ON TV SHOWCASTER

by Dave Westerman

TV Showcaster and parent company Post FX Digital Video are taking their regular Saturday night webcasts one step further as you can now watch previous weeks events at any time for free on the TV Showcaster web site.

Feature event videos from the March 27th program at Volusia Speedway Park are now posted at http://www.tvshowcaster.com/race/internet_tv_race.htm for
viewing at any time.  The service is totally free as are the weekly live
Saturday night webcasts.

In order to keep this service up and running as well as free, sponsors are badly needed.  “We want to branch out to other race tracks and make a full season of it, but the costs are prohibative to do so without getting some sponsors,” says Dean Baker, founder of Post FX and TV Showcaster.  “We aren’t looking to make a killing, just bring in enough money to cover costs, hire a crew and obviously make a few bucks.

Sponsorship is very affordable, and we’ll make sure our sponsors get their moneys worth,” he says.

Webcasts continue this Saturday from Volusia Speedway Park starting at 7PM and are currently sponsored by America’s Incredible Pizza.

Daugherty Wins Sun State Collision Center 35 Lap Feature

by Scott McAllister

March 29, 2010 Lake City, Fl – Columbia Motorsports Park fans were treated to a great night of racing which included the newly formed Queen Bees, the V-8 Bombers, the Pure Stocks, the Sportsman, and featured the Hornet Division for the Sun State Collision Center 35 Lap A-Main Event.

In the V-8 Bomber Division, AC Morrow was strong throughout the event, but Shawn DeSotle took advantage of a miscue off turn 2 to take over the lead and take home the win.  Morrow finished 2nd, Andy Nichols 3rd, Derek Davis 4th and Nathan Huffingham 5th.  Mike Parsell won Heat Race 1 and Shawn DeSotle also won Heat Race 2.

The Sun State Collision Center 35 Lap Feature Event was next for the Hornet Division and the early points leader Bert Daugherty left nothing to chance as he battled his way through the field and finished far in advance of 2nd Place Todd Brown.  Mark Copeland, Donald Davis and mark Sloan rounded out the top 5.  Daugherty and Brown also won their respective heat races.

Tough side-by-side racing was featured in the Pure Stock A-Main.  Randy O’Neal came out on top for his 1st win of the 2010 racing season while Jason Garver crossed the stripe 2nd.  Championship Points Leader Tim Alldredge finished 3rd, Todd Brown 4th and Jason Kite rounded out the top 5.  O’Neal also won Heat Race 1 and Alldredge won Heat Race 2.

The Sportsman Division drivers left nothing on the track after their A-Main event.  #21 Sean Monaghan battled Wesley Keller in the #8 machine while Shelton Bowers and Oral Tanner went side-by side for several laps, bringing the crowd to their feet.  Marty Wood crossed the stripe 1st in front of Wesley Keller, last year’s Track Champion Jeff Prescott, Sean Monaghan and Shelton Bowers.  Wood was later DQ’d during post-race inspection and Keller was awarded the victory.  Prescott, Monaghan and Bowers all moved up 1 spot in the finishing order and allowed Brian Hull to pick up a 5th place finish.

Kimberly Alldredge won the inaugural Queen Bee Division Feature Event, finishing in front of the 1H of Beverly Henault and the 69 of Alice Copeland.  Alldredge was also the winner of the Queen Bee Heat Race.

Cody Glenn from Lake Butler was the winner of our Fan participation race in his 1994 Honda Del Sol.

Racing resumes at Columbia Motorsports Park Saturday, April 3rd, 2010 at 7:30pm.  The racing program will include a 50 Lap Sportsman Division Feature Event along with the Pure Stocks, V-8 Bombers, Hornets and the always popular “Fan Participation races.”  For more information call the track office at 386-752-8811, or visit us on the web at www.columbiamotorsportspark.org

by BJ Cavin, Ocala Speedway Media

OCALA, FL-  Another exciting night of racing action is scheduled for Friday, April 2nd, as the official start of the championship points season gets underway at Ocala Speedway.  All races run so far have been exhibition events, meaning that no points toward divisional championships were counted.  Friday will mark the first points races for the Late Models, Amsoil V8 Thunder Stocks, Mini Stocks, and the Gladiators.

The extended holiday weekend will enable some racers to venture to Ocala Speedway who normally might have trouble making it in time for Friday night racing, and it presents an opportunity for some family fun at the track as well.  The grandstand gate will open at 5PM with heat racing set to get underway at 8PM.  For more information, or to see a complete schedule of events at America’s Dirt Track, plus admission prices and other information, please visit www.OcalaSpeedway.com, or call the track at 352-622-9400.

Venturini Motorsports Tops Two-Day ARCA Test at Talladega

TALLADEGA, AL (3-24-10) – Venturini Motorsports swept the top five positions on the speed charts at Talladega Superspeedway during the two-day ARCA Racing Series presented by RE/MAX and Menards open test.

Steve Arpin, in the no. 55 Toyota, led the Venturini Motorsports contingent with a top speed of 190.666 mph.

“The open test is a true testament to the hard work and long hours that the Venturini guys have put into this program,” said Arpin. “We have five really good cars and that shows in the speed charts. My car was better in drafting than single car runs and drafting was our main focus today. We have made leaps and bounds from where we were in Daytona and I really look forward to coming back here in April.”

NASCAR Nationwide Series veteran John Wes Townley, also in a Toyota, was second quickest overall at 190.624 mph. Townley finished third in the ARCA opener at Daytona. ARCA veteran and two-time series winner Mark Thompson was third fastest at 190.552 mph. Thompson finished second in the Daytona opener.

Mikey Kile made it four Toyotas in the top-five positions after the West Lake, Louisiana rookie wound up fourth on the overall chart.

“We were really pleased with the way the car handled in the draft runs,” said Kile. “It felt good all day and we continued to get faster. We were top of the speed charts in single car runs and fourth overall in drafting. It is pretty neat when your team brings five cars to the test and all five cars were quickest all day. We are 100% at test sessions this year! Unstoppable.”

Kile was referring to Venturini’s perfect track record in ARCA testing in 2010. After four early-season open tests at Daytona, the Palm Beach Int’l Raceway road course, Texas Motor Speedway and Talladega, the Concord, North Carolina-based Venturini multi-car team has been fastest at every test.owensalliheadshot.jpg

Alli Owens, the only Chevy in the Venturini five-car team, was fifth fastest overall at 189.156 mph.

“I am really strong at superspeedways and it really showed during the test session,” said Owens. “Coming from Daytona and after we got a couple races under our belts, I was able to concentrate and figure out what the car really needs and wants. All five of Venturini’s cars were at the top of the charts and that is what we expected. We felt confident coming into test and we feel very confident going into the race.”

Larry Brazil tops TBARA at Desoto

March 29, 2010

by Marty Little and Tom Blakeley

BRADENTON, Fla. – Larry Brazil, Jr. held off the late race challenges of Dude Teate to win Saturday night’s 30 lap TBARA feature event at DeSoto Super Speedway.

Pole sitter David Retzlaff hustled into an early lead over Johnny Gilbertson and Brazil but the first yellow of the night waved on lap six for D.J. Hoelzle’s flat tire. On the restart it was Retzlaff still in commad but Brazil had taken up the challenge with Teate a close third. Less than a lap was complete before Tommy Nichols jumped a wheel of Shane Butler’s No. 18 and ricocheted hard into the outside wall to bring out the red flag. Nichols was unhurt but finished for the evening.

The green waved to begin lap seven with Retzlaff, Brazil and Teate in line at the front but Sonny Hartley’s mount shredded a right rear tire and the yellow waved once again. On the restart Brazil got a jump on Retzlaff and made the pass for the lead into turn one with Teate gaining the runner up spot.

Brazil continued to pace the event but Teate shadowed his every move looking for a way past. Finally, on lap 23 Teate used a lap car as a pick and took the top spot only to have the yellow wave for the spinning car of Joey Aguilar. The lineup revered back to the last green flag lap and Brazil went back in front over Teate, Butler and Bo Hartley.

The last seven laps were without incident and Brazil scored his first victory of the season. Teate claimed runner up money over Butler, Bo Hartley and Ben Fritz. Aguilar recovered to checker sixth ahead of Retzlaff, Steve Heisler, Jimmy Alivs and Gilbertson.

Heat races were won by Brazil, Butler and Retzlaff.

The 2010 tour’s next event is back at DeSoto on Saturday, April 17.

The TBARA as always put on the best show in Florida and there was a lot of great racing in the other classes tonight.  The Rockem-Sockem Bombers ran an intense 25 lap feature race with Randy Spicer and Allen Bragg running side by side practically the entire race.  The wide grooves of  ASA Sanctioned Desoto Super Speedway allows for this kind of action and the two never even touched each other.  It had the fans on their feet and the camera on at the finish.  Going to Victory Circle with the win was Randy Spicer in the 83 car.  Allen Bragg was second in the great looking 89 car while Michael Crooks took third in the 33 car.  Crooks had quite an evening of racing, he first ran at another track, packed up his car and made it to Desoto Super Speedway in time to run the feature event and take a hard earned 3rd place.  However, Randy Spicer was DQed in tech after the race with a spring issue so Allen Bragg is the official winner and John Stewart got the third place finish while Crooks moved up to 2nd.   Stay tuned for next weeks saga.

KEVIN MACY THIRD WINNER IN THREE MODIFIED RACES AT AUBURNDALE SPEEDWAY

by Dave Westerman

It was another great night of racing action at Auburndale Speedway as Kevin Macy topped the Open Wheel Modified field to become the third different winner in three races run so far this year.
