TRUCKS HIT THE TRACK AGAIN SATURDAY NIGHT AT AUBURNDALE SPEEDWAY

by Dave Westerman

Auburndale Speedway continues a big month of May this Saturday night as the Auburndale Trucks headline an eight division racing card. Along with the Trucks, the Legend Cars return to action along with the Modified Mini Stocks, Street Stocks, Mini Stocks, V-8 Bombers, Scramblers and Bandoleros.

Keith Lilley dominated the first Truck race of the year in a substiute role for his machine’s regular driver. It’s not yet been determined if Lilley has a ride this week, but if he does look for the Lakeland veteran to be up front.

Lance Daubach, Tommy King, Tim Sozio and several more will also be looking for victory lane.

The Legend Cars return after a week off to run a Tour race at Citrus County Speedway which was won by Jake Perkins. Gerald White, Jr. continues to lead the Legend Car points on the strength of three consecutive feature wins. Justin Brown is now second in points, 24 behind White and just two ahead of third place Perkins.

Scotty Sharpe has moved out to a 44 point advantage over Jason Rendell in the Modified Mini Stock standings. Mike Sweet, the winner two weeks ago, is third in the standings, just two markers behind Rendell while Burt Morse is only four points in back of Sweet.

Jeff Waterman continues to lead the highly competitive Street Stock division point chase by 14 markers over rookie driver Matt McCrary who has a 38 point bulge over third place Dave Colpritt. 2009 track champion James Wright III was back on his game last week picking up the feature win and moved to fourth in the standings but is still far behind the leader Waterman.

Chris Spring ended Fred Harrison, Jr.’s win streak in the Mini Stocks last week. Spring’s third win of the year helped him trim Harrison’s point lead to just eight. Chris Narramore, Sr. blew an engine early in the feature last week and lost ground in the points battle as he’s now 34 points behind Harrison.

V-8 Bomber point leaders Josh Borem and Buddy Phillips, Jr. both had a rough week last week but maintain a healthy advantage over third place Paul Bookmiller.

Kim Gullett battled back from an early race crash to finish fifth in the Scrambler feature and maintained her point lead. Brian Tyre, who is second in points, finished one spot ahead of Gullett last week and was able to trim his deficit to ten points.

This Saturday, pit gates open at 2PM, grandstand gates open at 5PM and racing begins at 7PM.

NOTES:

The big news this week is that Auburndale Speedway will be receiving a make-over that will be ready when the Open Wheel Modifieds return on May 15th.

Work to add a tapered four feet of concrete on the inside of the turns is slated to begin on May 9th and take about three days to complete. It’s hoped the change will create two-groove racing in the faster classes and even three-wide racing in classes like Mini Stock, V-8 Bombers and Scramblers.

Loxahatchee’s Jeff Choquette has let it be known he’ll be in the field for the next Late Model race scheduled for May 22nd. Choquette’s car owner, Gary Fountain, was at the track for the AMF Chassis 100 last month scoping things out and even put up an award for the driver towing the farthest to the race. Mark Medeiros is one of those “true” racers who is there each and every time his class (Sportsman) runs at the track. Unlike most racers though, Medeiros is a disabled veteran who races because it’s “in his blood” and is smething that gives him tremendous satisfaction. Running on a very limited budget, Medeiros is third in the point standings despite missing one feature when his car suffered mechanical problems in hot laps. Medeiros wants to finish out the season but, like so many drivers working with tight purse strings, could really use some sponsors to help out. Just look for the black #13 in the pits or let any track official know you are interested in sponsoring Mark or any other driver that catches your eye. Many could really use the help right now even if it is just enough to buy gas or a tire every now and then.

Speaking of the Sportsman class, Dave Dunkin’s big crash last week saw his

30 point advantage in the standings dwindle to just three over second place Austin Carr. Carr won both the Sportsman heat and feature last week (career firsts) driving for Chuck Harrison, Sr. Austin is just 16 years old but has been racing since stepping into a Quarter Midget at the age of five. His dad, uncle and grandfather have all raced at Auburndale and other Central Florida tracks over the years.

The awesomely competitive Open Wheel Modifieds saw their point standings really get jumbled around after last weeks race. Kyle Macy came in leading the points but finished well back in the feature run-down allowing race winner Wayne Morris to take over the point lead. Kyle Bookmiller took over second in the standings while Macy dropped to third just seven points ahead of James Wright III.

Auburndale Speedway will soon have a new-look web site that will be easier to navigate and contain much more information. Thanks go out to Paul Rosarius and Ed Swinford of Palm Tree Computers in Oviedo, FL for helping put it all together.

AUBURNDALE SPEEDWAY GETTING A MAKE-OVER

by Dave Westerman

The race track will look a bit different when Auburndale Speedway opens for action on Saturday May 15th.

This Saturday night, May 8th, will be the final night of racing on the current configuration of the track as things will be much different the following week. Starting on Sunday, May 9th, crews will begin laying four feet of concrete on the inside of the turns to create a new “inside groove” that will allow for two-wide racing that drivers and fans have been asking for.

The concrete will be tapered in the same way the current banking is laid out. “What we’ll get is a tight inside groove and a middle groove that will be just as quick,” says track owner Rex Guy. “Everyone has been asking for a workable outside line around the race track and we feel this is the best way to go about it,” he says.

This method is expected to not only be much more cost-effective than completely repaving the track, but should actually provide better racing for all classes. “If we repave the surface, we’re still in the same boat,” says Guy. “The inside groove would be even faster and it would still make it difficult to use the outer lane. Our new plan is really the best way to increase competition and make an even better show for the fans,” he says.

The Open Wheel Modifieds will put the new configuration to the test for the first time on May 15th and the following week the Late Models return for a big 100 lap event.

“We are all looking forward to seeing two-wide racing in the Late Models and Modifieds and can only imagine what the racing will be like in classes like the Legends, Mini Stocks, Street Stocks and Scramblers,” says Guy.

BIG WAYNE MORRIS WINS MODIFIEDS – BAD NIGHT FOR POINT LEADERS AT AUBURNDALE SPEEDWAY

by Dave Westerman

It was yet another outstanding night at Auburndale Speedway Saturday although many of the division point leaders probably would not agree with that statement.

It was actually a full day of activity as Auburndale Speedway partnered with the Red Knights Motorcycle Club for the “World’s Largest Poker Run” which ended as riders arrived during the afternoon at the speedway, most of them hot, tired and sunburned, but happy as their efforts raised over $4,000 for the Fallen Firefighters Survivors Foundation. Activities included a car show and live music in the parking lot before the races and an appearance at intermission by “Wheelie Magic,” a specialized one-of-a-kind wheel-standing fire truck handled by former driver Dennis Coyle of Miami.

Firefighters went through the grandstands at intermission with their helmets and the track also donated their portion of the 50/50 raffle to the FFSF, bringing total donations to around $5,000.

The race evening was also dedicated in the memory of Auburndale resident Sgt. Keith “Coe Daddy” Coe, who died in Khalis, Iraq earlier in the week from wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit with an explosive device. The young man who grew up in New York and nearby Winter Haven, FL leaves a wife and four children.

The Open Wheel Modifieds were out in force for their second of back-to-back race weeks with 19 cars in the pits. Keith Lilley and Big Wayne Morris split the heat wins and made up row one of the 40 lap feature race.

Morris sped off at the drop of the green while Lilley fell back trying to maintain the tough outside groove. Contact with another car saw Lilley off the pace and taking his car to the infield as the caution flew on lap two.

Morris had things under control on the restart as Colin Cabre was doing all he could to hold off a snarling pack of cars for second.

Caution number two flew on lap 14 as James Wright III and Bobby Blake made contact sending Wright spinning down the front stretch. Wright, already nursing damage from a heat race crash that also eliminated Phil Morrison from further racing on the evening, restarted while Blake zipped into the pits to change a flat tire.

Two laps after the restart, Jimmy Wilkins looped his mount off turn two for yellow flag number three. On each restart, Morris was able to motor away from the field with relative ease. Lap 19 saw Rick Coffin’s engine blow up in a cloud of smoke however no caution was needed.

The final slow down of the race took place on lap 31 as Sammy Coghill went around in turn one.

No one had anything for Morris as he easily led the remaining nine laps to score his first win of the year. Morris also took over the division point lead as previous point leader Kevin Macy had a rough evening, eventually settling for a 12th place finish.

Cabre held off all advances from last weeks winner Kyle Bookmiller to grab a hard-fought second with Bookmiller third ahead of James Wilkins and Travis Roland. Von Pope, Coghill, Wright III, Shawn Harper and Jimmy Wilkins completed the top ten.

Dave Dunkin came in with a nice 30 point edge in the Sportsman standings but saw much of it erased in a grinding back stretch crash during the feature.

Sixteen year old Austin Carr, driving for Chuck Harrison, Sr., won the heat race and zipped out to the early lead in the feature with veteran Bart Weatherford right on his back bumper. As the two were lapping Austin’s uncle, Butch Carr, Jr., Weatherford made contact with the lapped machine and saw all the left-side sheet metal stripped from his racer.

The damage was only cosmetic and gave Weatherford a little extra “air conditioning” on a very warm night. He continued after the caution to remove the body work in second behind Carr.

Dave Dunkin had been trying to work his way up through the field but Kyle Alford got sideways off turn two during lap 16. Dunkin dove low to avoid Alford but the two cars touched sending Dunkin head-on into the back stretch wall. Despite the severity of the crash and a virtually destroyed race car, Dunkin emerged unhurt from the incident.

Carr managed to hang on all the way to score his first career Sportsman win.

Weatherford tried everthing he could to get by, then spun off turn four on the final lap handing the runner-up spot to Mark Medeiros. Chris Lewellen was third while Josh Todd (driving in a substitute role for Brandon Duchscherer -for a reason we’ll get to later) took fourth and Ted Head fifth. Weatherford recovered for sixth.

The Mini Stock feature was yet another close contest as Chris Spring and point leader Fred Harrison, Jr. duked it out all 20 laps before Spring prevailed for his third win of the year. Marilyn McCrary served notice she is about to return to form as she posted a close third place finish just in front of Donnie Guy and young rookie contender Jason Swilley. Spring also won the heat race.

The Outlaw Modifieds were scheduled to run at another track in Southwest Florida Saturday night. When that track unexpectedly closed at mid-week, Auburndale Speedway offered them a chance to run their points race here and they did not dissapoint.

Zach Rudd led the early laps but former class champion Doug Hopper of New Port Richey, sporting a new engine in his car, was not to be denied as he took over and sped to a convincing victory.

Rudd held off Tom Meyer for second with Ric Mills and John Gula fourth and fifth. Heat wins went to Rudd and Hopper.

Although his run in the Open Wheel Modifieds was laden with problems, James Wright III had no trouble in winning his second Street Stock feature of the year. The 2009 class champion led all the way to defeat a large field of cars.

Eddie Hartin came home second with Matt McCrary third. Chris Narramore, Jr. and Kyle Hall tangled with two laps to go while battling for fourth place. That allowed Chris Spring to notch a fourth place finish in just his second week out with his new car. Dave Colpritt had to claw his way forward all night but ended up fifth in the final tally.

Action in the V-8 Bombers started in their heat race as Brandon Duchscherer ended up pounding the front stretch wall after contact with Paul Bookmiller. Duchscherer was none to happy about the incident and threw his steering wheel into the cockpit of Bookmiller’s car. Duschsherer was then disqualified from all track activity which is why Josh Todd took over the Sportsman car that had been assigned to him. Bookmiller did give the steering wheel back though.

The feature was more anti-climactic although still not without a little “rouch driving.” It didn’t matter to Chris McGivern though as he easily drove off to the win and let everybody else duke it out behind him. Bookmiller wound up second in the feature ahead of Jeff Lacy, Kevin Barton and heat winner Buddy Phillips, Jr. Point leader Josh Borem had another off night taking sixth while still battling transmission issues.

The Scrambler feature got off to a rough start for point leader Kim Gullett as she tangled with Brian Tyre (who is second in points) and hit the front stretch wall. Gullett just made it out in time for the restart well behind the field.

Ron Norman and Scott Sharpe finished one-two in the feature run but both were set down in tech for not making minimum weight moving Gene Harrison into victory lane. Chad Cutting was second followed by Richard Brown and Tyre while Gullett charged back up to finish fifth. Harrison won the heat.

Heather Guy out ran Brandon Guy to win the Kids Club feature.

Next week on May 8, the Auburndale Trucks will race for 25 Laps. Also on the card are the Street Stocks, Modified Mini Stocks, V-8 Bombers, Scramblers, Mini Stocks, Legends and Bandeleros. Races start at 7PM. For more information call 863-551-1131 or log on to www.auburndaleracing.com.

Ocala’s “Night of Thousands” Means Big Money and Big Races

by BJ Cavin- Ocala Speedway Media

OCALA, FL-  Fans at Florida’s oldest race track have come to know that some of the wildest nights of racing action come when Ocala Speedway dangles a $1000 cash carrot in front of the racers and turns them loose.  Normally that cash carrot is reserved for one division at a time, but this Friday, May 7th, three divisions will be racing for a $1000 payout to the winner as the “Night of Thousands” makes its debut.

The new Sportsman Division at Ocala Speedway has only had a single outing this season, and that one attracted a varied mix of cars and racers from across the area.  But with $1000 at stake for the winner, Sportsman racers will be coming out in droves to take a shot at Ocala’s tricky layout and make a stab at the cash.  Ocala’s Augie “Big Frog” Burttram won the original race held on April 16th, while Hollister’s Kevin Mills followed in the second spot.  Also look for a good showing from Tim Dowling behind the wheel of the Xtreme Racing number 8 machine, which never got out of the blocks the last time out.

Ocala’s Tee Pee Tire Hobby Stocks last raced on April 16th as well, with Kevin Durden claiming the checkers in a race that saw a lot of paint being traded among the leaders, plus a fair amount of attrition as well.  Jody Wells won the last $1000 to win Hobby Stock event at Ocala Speedway and will certainly be looking to better his fourth place finish in the last outing, while Dean Jarvis will bring his hard hitting style back for another shot at a big payout.

Over the past two racing seasons the Amsoil Synthetic Lubricants V8 Thunder Stocks have established themselves as the most exciting division to watch, especially when extra money is on the line.  And in addition to the excitement that they create, the Amsoil Thunder Stocks also are the most competitive division, with more different winners than any other.  Their last outing on April 23rd attracted over 30 cars to Ocala, and required a B main in order to whittle the field down to 24 starters for the feature race, and that race offered a standard payout.  Throw $1000 out in front of these racers and all bets are off, including any wagers on how many competitive cars will crowd into the pits.

Michael Stalnaker has all but taken control of the Amsoil Thunder Stocks this season, and will undoubtedly be ready to try and leave with the $1000 and yet another victory.  But then again, never count out quality racers like Jason Gamble, Jerrid Bennett, Luke Sadler, and Eddie Lentz, to challenge Stalnaker for the prize.  And with extra money as a motivator, drivers like Scott Mooers, Chris Fontaine, and Austin Kirkpatrick, are likely to join the fray, further upping the competition level.

And Ocala Speedway’s 4 cylinder division known as the Gladiators will get another chance to race this Friday, as the racers look to take Casey Feaster down a notch or two.  Feaster has been the dominant force in the Gladiators as of late, but had to work for his victory on April 23rd as Harold Lewis and Nathan Rhodes turned up the pressure.  And with Casey Feaster’s primary car reportedly beset with some mechanical issues, his time at the top could be in jeopardy.

Fans can enter the grandstand gates at 5PM on Friday night, with hot laps scheduled at 6:45 and heat races beginning at 8PM.  For more information, or to see the season schedule, please visit www.OcalaSpeedway.com, or phone the track at 352-622-9400.

” We are excited to announce this years event and feel like we can make this the biggest ever for this years families. We have two 3 year old girls both facing stage 4 Neuroblastoma Cancer. Celena Torres and Aisyln Bledsoe are so adorable and they need our help. We will have their photo’s up on www.carsevents.com soon. The third family we help this year is a friend of this Charity event and a friend of the racing community. Founder and owner of Karnac.com Jack Smith is battling bone cancer and also needs our help. Jack has helped me since back in the Charity Go-Kart races, and has really supported this event, it is an honor to help him now when he needs us” stated Rick Bristol.

“I want to thank Robert Hart for again allowing us to use Orlando Speedworld again for our event, he has been a huge supporter of the event and I am very grateful, as are many families that have been helped. We will be announcing more information such as divisions, schedule and more over the coming weeks.
