TQ Midget’s “Freddy Stutz” Memorial Highlights Punta Gorda Speedway

By Bill Green, FromBehindTheMIC

Punta Gorda, FL – While the TQ Midgets came to honor one of their own, Ray Smith decided to “WOW” the crowd with a flip into turn 4 that saw him make 6 complete barrel rolls and take everyone’s breath away. After gathering his wits about him, and a short conversation with the safety crew, Smith stood and exited the crumbled midget on his on to the cheers of the fans.

The “Freddy Stutz Memorial” got back under way with newly wed Ted Durfee of Sarasota winning in front of his wife for the first time since the “I do’s. Second went to a hard charging Mike Belusar of nearby Punta Gorda. Seventy-nine year young Jack Duffy of Sarasota, finished a well deserved third, followed by Jamie Barnum from Spring Hill fourth and pole sitter Geoff Styner of Cape Coral settled for fifth.

The Checkered Flag Sprints totally WOWED  the crowd with Wild Child in the flag stand and 19 sprints taking part in the 30-lap feature. The feature went flag-to-flag in some 7 minutes, no cautions. The winner was Rookie of the Year contender, Jimmy Alvis Jr, from Seffner, with Brandon’s David Salwiak second, Mark Gimmler traveling over from Palm Beach Gardens, stayed in contention for another title with a run from 11th to third. Fourth went to Scotty Adema out of Fort Myers and fifth was Gary Gimmler, also of Palm Beach Gardens.

Bandelro’s saw the Hooven brother’s battle side-by-side for most of the 12lap feature. The victor this time was Shawn Hooven, over Mark Hooven, second. Third went to Reese Chase , but he was counted first in the Junior class, as he’s only 9 years old.

Open Wheel Lites or Dwarf Cars went 25-laps and saw the third place TQ Midget driver Mike Beluser take the win. Second went to Bo Bass from Eustis, FL. Larry Hubbard Jr. took third for the Hubbard family of racers in the class, while Roger Richmond, Port Charlotte and Tom Prior, Bonita Springs finished fourth and fifth respectively.

Legends saw Josh Williams win a second straight victory and the team car driven by Kevin Hendry go second. Third was pole sitter Brady Marshall, followed by Mike Fazio 4th and Carl Haag 5th.

Road Warriors watched Chris Scott do the Hat Trick with win number, three, in-a-row. Second was Logan Leonard, paced by Blaine Baer third, Rick Reed fourth and Derrick Horton fifth.

Next week Punta Gorda will have Pro Trucks, Open Wheel Modifieds, Pro-4, Fab-4, Super Stocks and Road Warriors. Call 941-575-7223 for ticket prices and information, or visit PuntaGordaSpeedway.com.

Alli Owens’s Michigan Report

BROOKLYN, Mich. (June 11, 2010) – The Racing for Wildlife 200 was a virtual roller coaster for the No. 15 ElectrifyingCareers.com race team. After starting 27th, Owens blistered through the field into the top-15. Thanks to a perfectly timed pit stop, Owens moved into the sixth position for the closing green flag run, only to have a controversial penalty nullify the team’s gains. Despite the setback, Owens and the team rallied and closed out the day in 13th-place.

The moment the race went green, Owens set a mean pace towards the front. She picked up 10 positions on the first lap and cracked into the top-15 on Lap 13. She held her position until the first caution flag waved, Lap 27, and she entered the pits for service. Her car was “tight off” when exiting the turns, so crew chief Jeff McClure called for air pressure and track bar adjustments, in addition to four tires and fuel for the No. 15 Chevy. Owens returned to the track in 15th-place.

Green flag action returned on Lap 36. Owens picked up two additional positions, but was still battling a tight-handling race car. She made the most of the situation, while waiting for an opportunity to bring her car down pit lane for another round of adjustments.

Several of the leaders began making their stops on Lap 70; however, McClure kept Owens on the track in hopes of a caution flag. On Lap 76, McClure radioed for Owens to bring the ElectrifyingCareers.comChevy into the pits. Just as Owens was entering pit road, a fortuitous yellow flag waved. Owens inherited sixth-place. During the caution period, Owens pitted for fuel, along with a round of wedge and air pressure adjustments to loosen up the car. She left her stall in sixth position. As she was exiting pit road, a car below Owens forced her up the track above the blend line, which is a racing infraction. Despite being pushed up the track, ARCA determined that she violated the rule and served her a penalty. Owens had to move to the tail-end of the longest line for the ensuing restart.

The race went back to green on Lap 82 with Owens in 15th-place. Only 18 laps remained in the event. Owens picked up three positions, but ran out of time to pick up any additional spots. She finished the day in 13th-place.

“We had a pretty good car today,” Owens said after the event. “We were a little tight on exit when the race started. We made adjustments on each of our pit stops to loosen it up. It was a little bit tight for the remainder of the race. The car just didn’t respond to the adjustments like we hoped it would.

“Jeff (McClure) had us stay on the track long enough to catch a lucky caution that put us in contention for a top-five. Unfortunately ARCA thought I illegally moved above the blend line when I exited pit road. I definitely moved up a groove, but the car below me forced me up there. I didn’t have much of a choice. That killed our track position and we didn’t have a chance to make it up.

“I’m really proud of my guys. They worked really hard to get this car ready and gave me awesome pit stops all race long. We deserved a better finish today, but sometimes the breaks just don’t go your way.”

Racers And Fans Celebrate Halfway at Volusia

by VSP Media

BARBERVILLE, FL-  The racers at Volusia Speedway Park are over the proverbial “hump” and heading downhill toward the end of the 2010 racing season as Saturday night marked the halfway point in another exciting year of divisional racing.  That was cause for a celebration, and VSP invited all divisions to join in and enjoy the party, plus allowed the fans to participate in a mega autograph and photo session on the speedway front stretch just after hot laps.  Dubbed “Mid Season Mania” it also awarded double points to each division, and thus caused a few changes in the pecking order as well.

Racers in the Daytona Dodge Chrysler Jeep Late Model Division were at Volusia Speedway Park for two major reasons.  While Mid Season Mania and double points were certainly a draw, there was the underlying fact that the Scott Thompson Memorial is a couple of weeks away and race teams want as much seat time at Volusia Speedway Park as possible.  But for David Clegg the whole thing was an example of lousy timing, as his primary car was still under major repair after his run up and over Ocala Speedway’s turn one wall the previous weekend.  That put Clegg in a back up machine, and that kept Clegg mired in the back of the pack on the very night that double points were on the line.

The feature race provided plenty of action as Jeff Mathews, Ivedent Lloyd, Johnny Collins, and Shane Williams, mixed it up, but the car to beat was the Big Frog Motorsports #58 ride of Mark Whitener.  Once Whitener got clear of the others he quickly extended his lead, weaving his way through traffic and almost getting out of sight of Ivedent Lloyd in second place.  Whitener got the convincing win while Ivedent Lloyd settled for second.  Johnny Collins overcame some missteps early to take the third spot while Joe Kump patiently picked his way forward to claim fourth place.  And rounding out the top five was Shane Williams, who had started from the pole in Wayne Shugart’s #16 machine.

Wayne Hammond also had a big night in the Budweiser Modified Division, starting on the pole when Ronnie Schron opted to start in the rear and never looking back.  As the track dried out and slicked off a bit some racers had trouble making the adjustment, and that caused the race to be broken up with several yellow flag interruptions, which never allowed other racers to find a good rhythm.  So as soon as Larry Burkins would challenge Hammond the caution would wave, and as Jamie Carter moved forward to challenge Burkins the same would occur.  It may have kept everyone close together, but it also robbed some racers of the time to complete maneuvers.

While Wayne Hammond got the win, and Jamie Carter finally overcame the cautions and nabbed second place.  Kent Corbin also had a strong night, managing to pick his way to third place while Jeff Mathews followed in the fourth spot.  And despite being quite strong in the early laps, Larry Burkins faded just a bit late in the race to come home in the fifth spot.

Coming into Saturday’s Taylor Racing Products Sportsman race Aaron Barsness had a tenuous grasp on the top of the points ladder, but a slip on the first lap of the feature race caused him to take a tumble.  A three wide venture in turn four resulted in Barsness and Danny Vogel’s machines bouncing off of the concrete wall and landing in a wad in the middle of the frontstretch, ending the night for both drivers and opening the door for whoever wanted to take a shot at the top of the points heap.

Meanwhile David Clegg took advantage of the situation with skillful but hard driving and made his way to the top three, while Josh Byrd and Stanton Mills carried on a side-by-side, multi lap drag race over the top spot.  Clegg patiently allowed them to fight it out, then took advantage as they used up their cars and made his way to the front.  A couple of late cautions would help keep things close, but Clegg grabbed a trip to Victory Lane despite the best efforts of Stanton Mills.  Mills finished second, followed by Josh Byrd and Steve Shead, while Kyle Chappell came on late to take the fifth spot.

Mark Maresca found himself leading the field to the green as the Daytona Sportswear Street Stocks took their turn on the clay, but as the green waved he was literally swallowed up by a host of hard charging racers.  Tim Hughes was the hardest charger, jumping to the front while Bubba Christian gave chase in second place.  Mike Tovet also was in the pack that swarmed over Maresca, and managed to get around Christian for second place, and Phillip Brown also passed the 04, sending Christian to fourth place.

Despite all of the hard driving, no one could touch Tim Hughes who could not help but tell everyone during his victory interview that his tires had over 600 laps on them.  The old tires worked well on the slick track, holding off Mike Tovet who came home in the second spot while Phillip Brown followed in third place.  Bubba Christian wound up finishing fourth, while Joe Belky fought his way to a fifth place finish.

Scott Mooers may be riding high atop the Amsoil Synthetic Lubricants Thunder Stock points standings, but Chad Scranton could not care less.  Scranton is a hard charger regardless, and he proved it again on Saturday night with another trip to Victory Lane.  Mooers finished in the second spot and made it a point to shake Scranton’s hand as he stood on the winner’s stage, but the tension in the air made it obvious that Scranton and Mooers are the new high intensity rivalry to watch at Volusia Speedway Park.

And while that rivalry has grown, Luke Sadler has been struggling through a season of “all-or-nothing syndrome.”  As Sadler pointed out post race, he either breaks and cannot finish, or goes to Victory Lane, so his third place on the night was a triumph of sorts as Sadler managed to complete the race without winning to do it.  David Whitt was strong early on but succumbed to the top three and finished in the fourth spot, while Donnie Nobles climbed as high as second place before finishing in the fifth spot.

Volusia Speedway Park’s 4 Cylinder Challengers have provided plenty of competitive racing all season and Saturday night’s feature race provided even more of the same.  A gaggle of racers found their way to the lead during the early laps of the race, but once the dust cleared James Sullivan was in front and in charge.  But Tony Laporta had Sullivan in his sights, and Sullivan was left to fight off challenge after challenge as the laps wound down.  Meanwhile some other notables were struggling with problems of their own.  RJ Glaser led from the pole but got shuffled back, where he spun from contact in turn 2 and suffered enough damage to wind up in the pits.  And Shawn Kosier has held onto the points lead despite a bad luck streak, but a blown tire from contact put Kosier out of the hunt early, and probably ended his reign at the top.

Tony Laporta made quite a fight out of it, but James Sullivan held off the repeated challenges to grab a win and a trip to Victory Lane, while Laporta said that he would be satisfied with second this time around.  Following Laporta across the line was Casey Feaster, who got into the front pack and held his own for third place.  Harold Lewis ran a strong race and placed fourth, while Nathan Rhoades fought his way to a fifth place showing.

June 19th will be a special night for fathers at Volusia Speedway Park as “This One’s For You, Dad!”  Dads will be eligible for special prizes and contests, and will see action from the Daytona Dodge Chrysler Jeep Late Models, the Budweiser Modifieds, the Taylor Racing Products Sportsman Division, the Daytona Sportswear Street Stocks, and the always competitive 4 Cylinder Challengers.  For more information on upcoming action at the track, please be sure to visit www.VolusiaSpeedwayPark.net.

Four First Time Winners on the Season Crowned at East Bay

By:  Jason Loughren

06/12/2010

The list of winners got a little longer after Saturday night racing action at East Bay Raceway Park. For the second time in three weeks, there were four new winners crowned.

The first came in the Precision Kia of Wesley Chapel Street Stocks as Clarence Pratt went wire to wire to claim his win. Clarence, twin brother of point leader Thomas Pratt, has had to endure the short end of the sibling rivalry, but gained bragging rights for the week. “One more lap and they would have had me. It was breaking up,” he said in victory lane. The “they” was four-time feature winner Donnie Reed who came home second. Eric Moon claimed third with Thomas Pratt and John Clark rounding out the top five. Moon, Buck Woodhouse and Reed won their heats.

The second new name is actually new only in 2010 as the driver returned to a spot where he had been many times before. “Superman” Sport Allen got back behind the wheel of an East Bay Sprint and charged to victory in his first regular season appearance. Allen had moved to second, then inherited the lead when Gene Lasker climbed the turn three wall, coming to rest in the frontstretch with badly damaged suspension. The incident also relegated point leader Tim George, who was in the top five, to a tail restart. Allen was followed by Travis Bliemeister, making his first start in more than two years. Third went to George, followed by Tony Agin and Clint Reynolds. Danny Jones (weight) and Kerry Gilbert (carburetor) lost top five finishes at the tech shed. Heats were won by George, Agin and Allen.

Josh Peacock secured his fourth win of the season, making a late race pass on Travis Varnadore. Peacock made countless attempts to secure the lead, but each was wiped out by a caution flag. He finally sealed the deal on the 22nd lap of the 25-lap main. David Schmauss slipped past Varnadore for second. Ted Erskine and John Koller claimed fourth and fifth, respectively. Varandore and Peacock had heat wins.

For the Limited Late Models, a new name stepped to claim the win. Daniel Woody, who dabbled in the Late Model class, made a strong move to take the lead from point leader J.R. Prather Jr. in the late stages and claim his first Limited Late Model win. Prather padded his point lead with a second place finish with Forrest Gough, John Bradley and Dan Darnell finishing in the front half. Gough was the winner of the only preliminary.

Raymond Vann admitted to playing hooky last week from action in the motorstats.com 4 Cylinder Bombers. “I took a week off to go fishing,” he said as he caught the big one Saturday night with the 15-lap feature win. Vann had to hold off a charging Johnnie Alexander. Matthew Odell made a late race charge for third. Richard Humfeld ran in the top five for the entire race, claiming fourth. Jeff Porter rounded out the top five in the 30-car field. Patrick Tabb Jr., Alexander and Elliott Morgan won heats. The feature race was delayed for 30 minutes after Morgan hit the backstretch wall and required the assistance of track safety crews.

Brett Phillips locked up the first win in Dirt Dauber action with Kendall Phillips along for the ride.
