Nature Washes Out Racing at Ocala Speedway

by BJ Cavin- Ocala Speedway MediaOCALA, FL-  Nature has been very unkind to Ocala Speedway this week, dumping rain on the track each of the last four days, including a 3 inch deluge that soaked the track on Wednesday.  Thursday’s rain only made matters far worse, and so Mike Peters has made the decision to rain out this Friday’s scheduled events.  Even if no more rain were to fall onto the track between Thursday night and Friday evening, the surface is too saturated to be worked into shape by Friday night, and the Friday forecast calls for another 60% chance of heavy thunderstorms, with the heaviest concentration in the Ocala area.

No decision has been made on making up any of the events scheduled for Friday night, including the “Father Mows Best” lawnmower race event.  An announcement will be made once officials at Ocala Speedway have met with event sponsors and participating media.

Please join Ocala Speedway for the next great night of racing action on June 25th, when the Colortyme Rentals Modifieds will hit the clay.  Fans will also see action from the Sportsman Division, the Tee Pee Tire Hobby Stocks, the Amsoil Synthetic Lubricants V8 Thunder Stocks, and the Gladiators.  To see the complete Ocala Speedway schedule, please visit www.OcalaSpeedway.com.

LATE MODELS GO FOR $3,000 TO WIN SATURDAY NIGHT AT AUBURNDALE SPEEDWAY

by Dave Westerman

The Late Models return to action Saturday night at Auburndale Speedway going for 100 laps, with a cool $3,000 going to the winner. The Late Models will be joined by the Mini Cup cars, Sportsman, Legend Cars, Mini Stocks, V-8 Bombers, Bandoleros and the Kids Club.

Plant City’s Jeff Scofield sits atop the Late Model point standings after three races with a 41 point margin over young Jason Vail of Clermont. Scofield has won two of the three races while Vail has set quick time at the last two events. Kevin Ingram is third in points just 17 behind Vail and just

12 markers ahead of veteran Perry Lovelady. All four are expected to compete and will be joined by the likes of Tim Russell, Chris Fontaine, Joe Boyd, Ron Lofquist, David King, Ryan Lisak, Josh Todd, Raymond Lovelady, Keith Lilley and a host of others.

Harold Crooms has taken a definite liking to the small but very fast Mini Cup machines, winning the last two races and leading the current points by 16 over Georgia driver John Beach. Beach is only four points ahead of third place Rick Ragan while defending champion Sam Scott is just two back of Ragan.

Jeff Scofield’s son Tyler is fifth in Mini Cup points.

The Sportsman cars are set to go again for rare back-to-back weekly action. Dave Dunkin continues to head the point chase while steady Mark Medeiros has taken over second in the standings, 18 back of Dunkin. After blowing an engine last week, Austin Carr has dropped to third in points trailing Medeiros by 38.

Gerald White, Jr. continues to extend his Legend Car point lead which has him now 30 points up on second place Jake Perkins while Justin Brown remains third, 34 behind Perkins.

It’s now a two man race in the Mini Stocks for the 2010 point title with Chris Spring leading 2009 champion Fred Harrison, Jr. by 14 going into this weeks action. Chris Narramore, Sr. sits third in points but did not compete last week and has fallen 142 points behind Harrison.

Josh Borem still maintains a huge lead in the V-8 Bomber points over Buddy Phillips, Jr. In the Bandoleros, Teddy Lively’s win last week has him now up by 18 points over Andy Metz in the Outlaw Division while Cameron White continues to run away with the 8-11 year old Bandit Division.

This week, all classes will qualify for starting positions with the exception of the Bandoleros and Kids Club. Adult admission remains at just $12 as Auburndale Speedway does not raise general admission prices for special events.

Also, make sure to bring the kids as “Lindsey’s Little Racers” will again be giving away a pair of bicycles this week. All youngsters aged ten and under will get an extra ticket good for the drawing at intermission. Two huge prize packs will also be given away thanks to of Precision Air of Florida, Inc. and

20 kids will also get free ice cream courtesy of Sportsman driver Dave Dunkin,

The Scott Thompson Memorial is Approaching Fast

by VSP Media

BARBERVILLE, FL-  Race fans might have noticed some new faces and names making appearances with the Daytona Dodge Chrysler Jeep Late Models more often, as racers such as Jack Nosbisch, Darrell Padgett, Johnny Collins, Ivedent Lloyd, and Mark Whitener, are choosing to race at the south’s fastest half mile.  And while any of these racers might make an appearance on any given night that the Late Models are scheduled to race, there is a reason that they all chose to spend this past Saturday night racing in Barberville.  They are getting some seat time in preparation for the Annual Scott Thompson Memorial, scheduled for June 25th and 26th at Volusia Speedway Park, and will have just one more shot at some seat time this weekend before the race arrives just one week later.

The Scott Thompson Memorial, featuring the United Dirt Late Model Challenge Series, will attract the top names in dirt late model racing, and will pay $3800 to the winner. The weekend will begin with an open practice for all divisions on Friday, June 25th, from 6PM until 9PM.  Then on Saturday, June 26th, the pit gate will open at 2PM for all race teams, and practice will begin at 6:15.  The grandstands will open to fans at 5:30PM and racing will begin at 7:30.

Fans will see plenty of exciting competition throughout qualifying, heat races, and B mains, plus the 50 lap Scott Thompson Memorial.  But they will also be treated to bonus action from the Taylor Racing Products Sportsman Division, the Daytona Sportswear Street Stocks, and from the hard driving Amsoil Synthetic Lubricants Thunder Stocks, three of the most exciting divisions at Volusia Speedway Park.

And while racing might be the main draw to come and enjoy a special night at Volusia Speedway Park, fans will also be in competition against some of the racers and other fans.  Volusia Speedway Park will be awarding prizes in a “Best Tailgate” competition, and there will be a rib eating contest held on the front stretch during the intermission between heats and feature races.  All of that, plus a fireworks display to complement the fireworks on the racetrack!

Interested racers may contact The United Dirt Late Model Challenge Series or Volusia Speedway Park for more information, and race fans are invited to visit www.VolusiaSpeedwayPark.net for additional details and directions to the south’s fastest half mile.

DUNKIN AGAIN TOPS SPORTSMAN – TRUCKS GO TO HERNANDEZ AT AUBURNDALE SPEEDWAY

by Dave Westerman

It was yet another hot night of Racing at Auburndale Speedway as veteran Dave Dunkin continued his dominanace of the Sportsman class while Nick Hernandez and Bobby Mobley picked up their first wins of 2010 in the Auburndale Trucks and Street Stocks.

Dunkin was pretty much in a class to himself as he picked up yet another Sportsman win and added to his point lead. Austin Carr, second in points, blew the engine in his car during the heat race and had to set out the feature. Carr wasn’t the only driver to uncork and engine in the heat as Chuck Harrison, Jr. did likewise making for a very long eight lap race requiring two major clean-up efforts. (more…)

Father Mows Best at Ocala Speedway This Friday

by BJ Cavin- Ocala Speedway Media

OCALA, FL-  This Friday night brings something different and new to Ocala Speedway, as the “Father Mows Best” competition will put real fathers on real lawnmowers and turn them loose to race on the clay at Florida’s oldest speedway.  In addition to the lawnmower event, expect high energy action from the Late Models, Tee Pee Tire Hobby Stocks, Mini Stocks, and the Gladiators.

After the excitement of the 15th Annual Powell Memorial has died down it is time for Ocala Speedway’s Late Model racers to get back to the business of winning the 2010 points championship.  Currently Mark Whitener is on top of the rankings with a 22 point pad over the newest Powell Memorial winner, Phillip Cobb.  JO Nobles remains within 6 points of Cobb, and Christian Augspurger trails Nobles by only 12 points.  In fact, no less than ten racers are within 100 points of first place, and many are making moves toward the top.

Dean Jarvis and Heath Walker have enjoyed battling for the Tee Pee Tire Hobby Stocks points lead as much as fans have enjoyed watching them battle it out in feature races, but the last outing saw both racers make early exits and that opened the door for Bubba Christian to step up and grab a win.  Walker is a mere 10 points from replacing Jarvis as the points leader, but Jonathan Appleby and William Edwards are both within 40 points of doing the same, so neither Jarvis nor Walker can afford to concentrate on each other.

Ocala Speedway’s Mini Stocks have had many ups and downs this season so far, but through it all the competition level has remained heated at the top.  Defending champion Paul Combast has a toe hold on the top rung of the points ladder with Nick Kerr just 3 points back and Dan Kerr is 12 points out of first place.  Depending on what happens on Friday night it is likely that there could be another change at the top, and the only question might be who ends up where.

Steven Johnson is still on top of the Gladiator points battle despite the best efforts of Casey Feaster and Matt Shea, who have both been outperforming him as of late.  Feaster grabbed the win last Friday while Shea wound up in the second spot, so both are still gaining ground on the leader bit by bit.  Meanwhile Devin Walker made an early exit thanks to a mechanical failure on Friday night, so he will be focused on making up what was lost this week.  Walker currently sits in third place in the points standings, just behind Casey Feaster.

Ocala Speedway will open the grandstand gates at 5PM on Friday night with heat races beginning at 8PM,  and the “Father Mows Best” event will be held during the intermission period.  For more information, please be sure to visit www.OcalaSpeedway.com, and don’t forget to check out the rest of the season schedule while you are there.

This One is For Dad at Volusia Speedway Park

by VSP Media

BARBERVILLE,FL-  With Father’s Day fast approaching the racers and staff at Volusia Speedway Park want to honor all of the fathers with “This One’s For You, Dad” at the races this Saturday night.  All of the dads will be eligible for special contests and prizes, and will be thrilled with high powered action from the Daytona Dodge Chrysler Jeep Late Models, the Budweiser Modifieds, the Taylor Racing Products Sportsman Division, The Daytona Sportswear Street Stocks, and the 4 Cylinder Challengers.

The Scott Thompson Memorial will be a mere week away when the Daytona Dodge Chrysler Jeep Late Models take to the south’s fastest half mile this Saturday night, and many racers will be looking for those last laps of seat time in preparation for the event.  And chances are that the competitors will be looking for a way to catch Mark Whitener, who blistered the field this past Saturday.

But aside from preparing for the Thompson Memorial, late model racers will be chasing a new top dog in the point standings this week as Joe Kump moved past David Clegg to occupy the top spot.  Clegg raced in a backup car due to damages suffered to the primary ride at Ocala Speedway and the Powell Memorial, and that back up let Clegg down on double points night.  Kump’s fourth place finish on Saturday gave him a 16 point edge over Clegg going into this week’s race.

Jamie Carter managed to widen his lead over Jeff Mathews in the Budweiser Modified points standings this past Saturday night with a solid second place finish.  Mathews is now 85 points shy of Carter while Kent Corbin is 177 points out of first.  Jamie Carter might be looking a little more secure at the top, but Jeff Mathews still has his sights set on surpassing him.  Wayne Hammond may be well down the points ladder from the top three, but he was on top of everyone this past Saturday as he scored a solid victory.

Murphy’s Law states that if something can go wrong, it will, and at the worst possible moment.  Aaron Barsness became the latest expert on Murphy’s Law on Saturday night, as his tangle with the front stretch wall and Danny Vogel on double points night was enough to allow Shaun Daugharty to replace Barsness as the Taylor Racing Products Sportsman Division points leader.  But while Daugharty may be at the top, he is barely there with a mere one point advantage over Barsness, and Daugharty has been having to work for top five finishes as of late.  Depending on what happens this Saturday, we could easily see the lead role switch again because Mr. Murphy might not be finished with the Sportsman racers yet.

Tim Hughes asserted himself on Saturday night to snatch a Daytona Sportswear Street Stock victory away from a competitive field this past weekend, and that drew him to within one point of points leader Phillip Brown.  And with Brown in easy reach, Hughes has a 161 point pad between himself and Mike Tovet, who is in the third spot.  Hughes, Tovet, and Brown, comprised the top three in this past Saturday’s outing, so it is up to guys like Bubba Christian and Marc Maresca top do something about it.  This Saturday’s race should be yet another hotly contested affair, and with Hughes and Brown neck and neck it is anyone’s guess as to who will be on top next week.

A flat tire due to contact with another car is the latest misfortune to bite Shawn Kosier, and that was enough for Casey Feaster to get a taste of the top of the Challenger points heap.  Kosier needs five points to get his old spot back, and a little bit of good luck instead of bad.  Meanwhile RJ Glaser is still in the hunt at 101 points out of first place, and Tony Laporta is climbing the standings after finishing second to James Sullivan this past Saturday night.  Laporta has now closed to within 30 points of Glaser.

The grandstand gates will open at 5:30PM this Saturday night with action getting underway at 7:30.  For more information, please visit www.VolusiaSpeedwayPark.net.
