Five Divisions to Battle at Ocala this Friday

by BJ Cavin- Ocala Speedway Media

OCALA, FL- After nature stole another night of racing from the fans on June 18th, Ocala Speedway will be back in action on Friday, June 25th, with five exciting divisions.  Fans will see hot competition from the Colortyme Rental Modifieds,  the Sportsman Division, the Tee Pee Tire Hobby Stocks, the Amsoil V8 Thunder Stocks, and the Gladiators.  And as an added bonus, the “Father Mows Best” lawnmower race that was rained out last weekend, will run at intermission this Friday night.

The Colortyme Modifieds are providing one of the closest points battles of the 2010 season as 11 top racers are within easy striking distance of points leader Jeff Mathews.  Mathews’ lead is by a mere 15 points over Kyle Owen, while Kyle Bronson and Roger Crouse are tied at just one point shy of Owen.  Wayne Hammond is 19 points shy of Mathews, while Chip Owen and Garrett Stewart are 26 and 36 points out of first place.  Mathews got a win the last time out, but any slip on his part could result in any one of these racers replacing him at the top.

Danny Vogel and Stanton Mills entered the fray the last time out for Ocala’s Sportsman Division, and those two racers quickly proved that they were there to win.  Vogel won the race while Stanton Mills finished second, while points leader Kevin Mills failed to start the main event due to mechanical issues.  Augie Burttram’s third place finish was enough to vault him in front of Kevin Mills on the points ladder, while Vogel and Stanton Mills climbed all the way into third and fourth place in the points respectively.  Kevin Mills is now in a position where he must perform well this weekend if he has any hope of staying in the top four or five in points, as Vogel and Stanton Mills are both within easy reach of taking him down a few more notches.

The Tee Pee Tire Hobby Stocks were expected to provide another side by side battle between Dean Jarvis and Heath Walker the last time out, but both of those drivers wound up watching from the sidelines as Bubba Christian took over and won.  Jarvis is still the points leader with Walker just 10 points behind, so this Friday offers yet another chance for these two racers to steal the show.  That is, barring anymore unfortunate bouts of lousy luck.  In fact, the top three in the 2010 points race fared badly on June 11th, and now need to keep one eye in the mirror.

After enduring a run of races where it seemed impossible to finish, much less get a win, Michael Stalnaker put his race car back into the Victory Lane celebration with the Amsoil Synthetic Lubricants V8 Thunder Stocks two weeks ago.  While that finish failed to knock Jerrid Bennett out of the top spot, it at least kept Stalnaker within striking distance at 28 points out of first place.  Right behind Stalnaker are the EBD Racing drivers, Brian and Chris Shea, who could easily overtake Stalnaker should he falter again.  And a wild card in the mix is Scott Mooers, who struggled the last time out and never factored into the finish.  After a less than spectacular outing Mooers should be more determined to run up front and challenge for the win, which could get in the way of someone else who wants it just as badly.

Casey Feaster grabbed a Gladiator Division win on June 1, drawing within 20 points of points leader Steven Johnson.  Meanwhile Devin Walker has slowly been creeping up the ladder, and now sits in third place just three points behind Feaster, while Matt Shea’s second place finish on the 11th kept him in the fourth spot for 2010, and still climbing.  Steven Johnson keeps posting top five finishes, but his competition is whittling away at his points lead little by little each week by finishing in front of him.  Look for Johnson to step it up this week to defend the top spot, while Feaster keeps clawing at him from behind.  And also look for Devin Walker to have his mechanical gremlins under control so that he can try to overtake Casey Feaster.

Ocala Speedway will open the grandstand gates at 5PM on Friday evening with heat races scheduled to begin at 8PM.  For more information, please visit the official website of Florida’s oldest speedway, www.OcalaSpeedway.com.

Mother Nature One – Punta Gorda Speedway Zero

By Bill Green, FromBehindTheMIC

Punta Gorda, FL – Mother Nature unleashed a torrential down pour at 5pm on Punta Gorda Speedway. Before the final sprinkles stopped at 7:30pm, Kevin Williams had rallied the troops for a full scale attack on the standing water in the infield. Broom crew, safety crew and other available track officials were moving water with brooms, blowers and dragged tractor tires.

Special thanks to Danny Daniels Jr. of the #09 Super Stocks who personally came out onto the track and helped push a broom to aide the crews working to get the show started.

Cars were brought out just before 8pm hour and the drying really got going. Fans enjoyed watching the Safety Truck and Broom Trucks pulling tires, as they slung them through the corners, drivers in Road Warriors, Pro Trucks, Pro-4’s and others had to dodge the tires as they were over taking those crew trucks.

Around 8:05 Mother Nature took exception to the tracks great efforts and the rains returned again.

Officials were faced with calling the events of the evening and rescheduling the Outlaw Modified, Dan Curl Memorial for a future date. Pit arm-bands are good for the next scheduled race event for the racers and crew, while the Grandstand Tickets must be used during the next two weekend events at the track, June 26th or July 10th.

Next week, June 26th, Punta Gorda Speedway has 115-Laps of Late Model action, TQ Midgets, Legends, Mini-Cups, Modified Mini Stocks, Pro & Fab-4’s, plus Young Gun’s Bandolero’s in Action.

July 3rd will see Punta Gorda Speedway closed for the 4th of July weekend break.

July 10th has PGS Late Models 50-Laps, Sportsman 35-Laps, Road Warriors, Cowboy Cadillac’s, Dwarf Cars, plus Pro & Fab-4 Action.

We’ll see you at the races!

PERSISTENT SHOWERS CANCEL AUBURNDALE SPEEDWAY RACING – TEN DIVISIONS IN ACTION NEXT WEEK

by Dave Westerman

Auburndale Speedway made every attempt possible to get the show in Saturday night for the huge crowd that was on hand but Mother Nature had other ideas.

The big storms stayed away from the track but a persistent drizzle caused track officials to call the program at about 9:30. The track had just about dried out from the first rain shower and the first feature was being called into staging just as the drizzle started up for a second time. Officials did not want to keep the fans as late as it would have been in order to try to dry the track a second time.

The rain out will create a big racing program next week as the Late Models will be added to the schedule to make up this weeks race. 27 cars signed in and 25 took time Saturday evening with Chris Fontaine turning the fastest lap at 13.552 seconds. Daniel Webster was second quick followed by Jeff Scofield, Scott Millar and Jason Howell. However, all cars will re-qualify next week, so this weeks times were all for naught.

The Open Wheel Modifieds will also be on the schedule and will qualify for starting positions next week. Also on the program will be the Sportsman cars, Street Stocks, Modified Mini Stocks, Mini Stocks, Legend Cars, V-8 Bombers, Bandoleros and Kids Club. Those classes will run features only. In all, ten classes will be in action.

Rain checks from Saturday night will be honored this week or on July 10th if fans can’t make it back this week. Over 100 cars were in the pits Saturday night and expect many more next Saturday.

Austin Sanders Wins Gagel’s Open Wheel Modified Feature in Rain Shortened Program.

By:  Jason Loughren

06/19/2010

It was Golden Gate Speedway Alumni night at the Clay by the Bay as we honored the tradition of the once grand Tampa track which is gone but not forgotten.  Fans were treated to the running of the Orange Blossom Sprints and Vintage cars at the intermission.  Four classes of racing were on the card for the evening but Mother Nature ended the program short with only the Gagel’s Open Wheel Modified’s and Street Stocks completing their program.

In the Gagel’s Open Wheel Modified 15 lap feature event Austin Sanders passed Bobby Dixon on the 14th lap to take the win.  The win was the 3rd of the season for Sanders.  Bobby Dixon finished 2nd.  Roger Crouse had a strong run and finished 3rd.  Buzzie Reutimann and John Bradley rounded out the top-5.  Bradley and Reutimann won the heats. Sudden Deluge Drowns Out Volusia Races

by VSP Media

BARBERVILLE, FL- Threatening weather all but surrounded Volusia Speedway Park at around 6PM Saturday afternoon, yet by 6:20 the radar indicated that the worst had passed, and that the storms were breaking up.  But as Florida residents well know, things can happen quickly when it comes to the weather, and as the cars moved onto the speedway to begin hot laps, the skies opened in a sudden deluge that rained out the night’s events in mere seconds.  So much rain fell so fast that track officials could not see the backstretch from the tower on top of the grandstands, and within a couple of minutes the pit area had begun to flood.

The sudden storm washed out five divisions of scheduled action, including the final night for the Daytona Dodge Chrysler Jeep Late Model racers to get some seat time before next week’s Scott Thompson Memorial.  Also washed out of action were the Budweiser Modifieds, the Taylor Racing Products Sportsman Division, the Daytona Sportswear Street Stocks, and the 4 Cylinder Challengers.

Wrist bands and tickets purchased before the rains arrived this weekend will be honored for any Volusia Speedway Park event through the end of July.  However, if patrons choose to use them for next weekend’s Scott Thompson Memorial race, they will be charged the difference in price at the gate.  50/50 tickets already purchased will be rolled over into next week’s drawing, and the winning numbers will be kept in case the winner is not present at next week’s events.  Ticket holders will be able to telephone the Volusia Speedway office to check their tickets against the winning number after the Scott Thompson Memorial next week.

The Scott Thompson Memorial, featuring the United Dirt Late Model Challenge Series, will highlight the action at Volusia Speedway Park next Saturday, June 26th.  Fans will also see action from the Taylor Racing Products Sportsman Division, the Daytona Sportswear Street Stocks, and the Amsoil Synthetic Lubricants Thunder Stocks.  For more information, please visit www.VolusiaSpeedwayPark.net.
