The Street Stock Sensation Highlights Saturday Night at VSP

by VSP Media

BARBERVILLE, FL- Five divisions of racing action await the fans this Saturday, July 24th, as Volusia Speedway Park presents the Daytona Sportswear Street Stock Sensation, plus the Daytona Dodge Chrysler Jeep Late Models, the Budweiser Modifieds, the Taylor Racing Products Sportsman Division, and the 4 Cylinder Challengers. And the kids will also be hitting the track as Box Car Racing highlights the intermission activities.

The Daytona Sportswear Street Stock Sensation is an opportunity for the Street Stock racers to have a night in the spotlight and battle for a $1000 check, and Philip Brown will be ready to defend his status on top of the 2010 points heap. Brown leads Tim Hughes by 29 points going into this week’s competition, and is coming off of a much heralded win over Chad Scranton in the Amsoil Thunder Stocks this past Saturday night. That take of victory has Brown ready for more, and he will be primed and ready for all comers this Saturday.

Mike Tovet earned a win on July 10th while Brown settled for second place and Tim Hughes had a night that he would rather forget. But with Bubba Christian now running races on a regular basis and Jody Wells picking up speed at this point in the season, the competition level has been amped up few notches.

Lake Helen’s Joe Kump remains the top man with the Daytona Dodge Chrysler Jeep Late Models after bumping David Clegg down to second place, and now Clegg is under assault from a hard charging Donnie Chappell who is only two points shy of taking Clegg down yet another notch. Clegg has been trying to tread water ever since his unfortunate meeting with the turn one wall at Ocala Speedway forced him into a backup car, but hard work and determination has the backup machine running far better than it was just a few weeks ago.

Matt Hartley drove past Chappell on July 10th to win the last outing, while Clegg finished in the 8th spot. That narrowed Clegg’s advantage over Chappell and set up this week’s showdown for second place in the points, while Joe Kump’s fourth place finish kept him in the top spot.

“The Repo Man” Jeff Mathews scratched out a win over a hard charging, and three wheeling, Kyle Bronson last Saturday night in the Budweiser Modified Mania, but he still remains 60 points short of overtaking Jamie Carter at the top of the list. While Mathews was winning, Carter fought hard for the third place finish and thus kept a margin of error between himself and Mathews as the season progresses. And behind them Kent Corbin continues to fight the good fight in his attempt to gain ground on the leaders. If Mathews wants to get the season championship he will have to consistently beat Carter to the checkers week after week, and the closer Carter keeps running behind Mathews the longer that process will take.

The Taylor Racing Products Sportsman Division has had plenty of time off since their last outing on June 26th, and are ready to get back to the business of fighting for a season championship this Saturday night. Aaron Barsness maintains a 22 point advantage over Shaun Daugharty in the points race with Steve Shead 109 points out of first place in the third spot. Barsness settled for a fourth place finish on the 26th while Stanton Mills grabbed a win over ” Double Down” Danny Vogel, and Matt McGillivray placed third. Daugharty’s woes continued the last time out, but hopefully that bad luck streak was snapped by some time off to refocus and possibly make a return to the top of the points battle.

Tony Laporta’s victory in the Challenger Challenge race a couple of weeks ago showed that contrary to reports saying otherwise, he still is one of the dominant cars in the division and has what it takes to win. But while he was winning the big race, James Sullivan was chasing him down as the 48 car has joined the elite group at the head of the pack. No matter who is winning, Casey Feaster remains at the top of the points standings with a 74 point cushion over Shawn Kosier, and when you factor in that Kosier exited the division last week when he sold his race car and trailer, Feaster is actually up by 116 over Laporta as Kosier will be in free fall from here on out.

And speaking of Casey Feaster, he will be the season points leader at both VSP and at Ocala Speedway when racing begins this weekend. It was hard enough for Feaster to achieve his goal of topping the points at both tracks, but now he must maintain that distinction which is an even tougher hill to climb. Most certainly it will put a huge target on Feaster’s backside as he races at both speedways this weekend.

Volusia Speedway Park will open the grandstand gate at 5:30PM this Saturday night with heat races slated to begin at 7:30. For more information, please visit www.VolusiaSpeedwayPark.net.

Late Models Return To Ocala this Friday

by BJ Cavin- Ocala Speedway Media

OCALA, FL- Ocala Speedway will present another night of top notch dirt racing action this Friday, July 23rd, as the Late Model Division returns after a lengthy layoff. In addition to the Late Models, fans will be treated to more fender banging action from the Amsoil V8 Thunder Stocks, plus the only Mini Stock Division on dirt in Florida, and the highly competitive Gladiator Division will be back with a new 2010 points leader.

Fans have been anxiously awaiting the return of the Late Model Division as the last feature race was back on June 4th when Phillip Cobb became the latest winner of the Annual Powell Memorial. And as the Late Models return to the southeast’s toughest 3/8ths mile, the 2010 points battle is still up for grabs. Mark Whitener holds onto the top spot, but 10 other racers are all within 98 points of first place. Phillip Cobb is just 22 points back, J.O. Nobles is only 29 points shy of the top spot, and young Christian Augspurger is a mere 41 points short of first place. Needless to say, any mistakes or misfortunes in the top tier of the points chart could spell trouble and let gravity take over, so the leaders will be watching their backs while those who are chasing them are beginning to salivate for their own taste of the top. That makes for exciting and tough racing this Friday night, and a strong group of top late model racers will be on hand to take part in the feeding frenzy at the top.

The Amsoil V8 Thunder Stocks have the reputation of being the toughest division racing at Ocala Speedway, and with good reason. On any given Friday night, it is likely that as many as half of the 20 or so cars that begin the feature will not finish it, and those that do make it to the finish rarely arrive unscathed. And seven racers are within reach of unseating the top dogs in the season points battle going into Friday’s feature race, as Jerrid Bennett maintains a toe hold on first place. Michael Stalnaker is lurking just 12 behind him, and EBD Racing’s Brian and Chris Shea are 40 and 42 points out of first place. Meanwhile Scott Mooers continues to score solid finishes at Ocala in his quest to remain in the top three of the UMP DIRTcar national rankings.

The adventures of the Ocala Speedway Mini Stocks continued two weeks ago when yet another dramatic chapter was written in their up and down season. Defending Mini Stock Champion Paul Combast collected a win when a protest caused a tear down in post race tech that led to a DQ, and everyone else bumped up the finisher’s bracket one notch as a result. The DQ also helped Combast feel a bit more secure at the top of this season’s points heap as Dan Kerr now trails by 27, and Nick Kerr is 63 points shy of first place. So as the Mini Stocks return this Friday, there might be a hint of resentment hanging around which could translate into more action on the track.

The Gladiator Division saw their points leader take a tumble last Friday as Steven Johnson failed to finish the race and Casey Feaster passed him on his way to the top of the points. Feaster’s new position as Gladiator points leader gives him the unique distinction of leading the 2010 points totals at Ocala Speedway and at Volusia Speedway Park as well, but his grip on the top at Ocala is tenuous at best. Feaster leads Steven Johnson by a mere 5 points, and Devin Walker is just one point behind Johnson. And all of the above might do well to watch Matt Shea, as he is only 19 points out of first place and very capable of beating all of them on any given Friday.
The pit gate will open at 2PM this Friday at Ocala Speedway with the grandstand opening at 5PM. Early arrivers will be treated to hot laps before the heat races begin at 8PM. For more information, please visit www.OcalaSpeedway.com.

TIM RUSSELL WINS WILD LATE MODEL RACE AT AUBURNDALE SPEEDWAY

by Dave Westerman

Auburndale Speedway was the scene for plenty of red-hot racing on a very warm and muggy evening Saturday as Tim Russell survived a hectic 100 lap Late Model race to score his second win of the year here and cart a healthy $3,000 check back to his home in Longwood.

Once again the Late Model race teams came out in force with 27 cars filling the pit area. Russell fast time at 13.490 seconds topping Jason Vail’s best lap of 14.561. Daniel Webster’s 13.633 was good for third quick ahead of Joe Winchell and Chris Fontaine. (more…)

Team Car Warz Prepares to Head North

Team Car Warz Media

The “Team Car Warz” crew is gearing up for what will be a long summer tour. The first show of the northern tour will be at the beautiful Lake Erie Speedway in North East PA. just east of Erie, PA. on August 7th at 7 pm.

The events for the night include a $5000 to win 4&6cyl enduro race, as well as a 16 bus field school bus figure 8 race, the wild & wacky boat & camper trailer race, skid car racing, a flagpole race, roller derby, and a fan burnout contest. The night will be capped off with a front wheel drive demo derby.

The annual lake Erie Show is quickly becoming a much anticipated yearly tradition with both fans and drivers alike.

The second stop on the summer tour will be on August 14th at 7pm at the Motordrome Speedway in Smithton, PA just outside Pittsburgh.

This will be only the second trip to the Motordrome for Team Car Warz . Last year Mother Nature proved that she is not always a Car Warz fan. Nearly 4 inches of rain fell in 2 days in the area causing the Saturday night show to be postponed until Sunday afternoon. Despite the postponement there was enough interest in the show from both fans & drivers that promoters Don Nerone & Chuck Rush felt they had to give the Motordrome another shot this year.

The August 14th Show will consist of Monster Truck action with former Monster Freestyle champions “Black Stallion” & “Iron Warrior” a Monster truck ride truck will also be on hand so fans will have the chance to get the ride of there lives.

Competitors will compete in a 4&6 cyl. Enduro race, a Boat & trailer race, Skid car racing, a Flagpole race, a Chain race, a fan Burnout contest, a Front wheel drive 4& 6 cyl Demo derby, as well as racing action in Motordrome’s Charger division

On August 21st the crew will head south to Atlanta, Ga. and Lanier Speedway. This will be Team Car Warz second trip to Lanier Speedway this year.

Track owner Donnie Clack said “with the over whelming response we got from our fans after Team Car Warz’s was here in April bringing them was a no -brainier”.

Lanier Speedway fans will see an Awesome motorcycle stunt show with Travis Williston and Team FMX. Fans will also witness an auto stunt show with the mid air T-bone and the walls of steel . Along with racing action in Lanier’s weekly division Legend cars and Bandoleros, there will be racing action with a 4&6 cyl enduro, a boat & trailer race, a flagpole race, a chain race, a skid car race, and a Front wheel drive demo derby .

The crew will then get a short two week break to catch their breath before heading back up north to Holland, New York.

September 11th will find the Car Warz team at Holland, New York’s Holland Speedway at what we consider to be our second home.

Chuck Rush said “when we roll into town it’s just like coming home”. That’s a sentiment shared by the entire Team Car Warz family. “The entire town treats us like family and almost like heroes”, Rush said.

With an average crowd of nearly 7000 fans and an average car count of over 140 cars, Holland Speedway has become host to the largest show on the tour….. far surpassing any other show including the Orlando, Florida show where it all began 15 years ago.

The September 11th show will include School bus figure 8 racing, a $5000.00 to win compact enduro (which last year had a 98 car field), a flagpole race, a boat & trailer race, roller derby, a fan burnout out competition, a front wheel drive demo derby, and a lawn mower demo derby, as well as a special tribute to those who lost so much in the attacks of 911

When the team leaves Holland the tour is not over. Team Car Warz will make a stop at Ocala Speedway in Ocala, Florida for a show that is scheduled for September 25th. Events for that show will be announced soon.

The Feud in the Forest Moves East to Volusia

by VSP Media

BARBERVILLE, FL- The two night “Feud In The Forest” continued on Saturday night as the Top Gun Sprint Car Series and the Florida Mini Sprint Association, made the roughly 50 mile trek through the Ocala National Forest to Volusia Speedway Park, after a competitive and exciting Friday night at Ocala Speedway. Also on the card for Saturday were the Budweiser Modifieds, as they made up the $1200 to win Mod Mania that was postponed by weather, and the always exciting Amsoil Thunder Stocks.

As is the case in duel night events, things that happen on the first night may have an effect on what transpires on the second, and Friday’s visit to Ocala’s tough 3/8ths mile layout claimed a few victims from the ranks of the Top Gun Sprint Car Series. But despite those setbacks, Volusia Speedway Park awoke to the sounds of repairs being made on Saturday as teams hammered out the dents and replaced broken equipment in preparation for Saturday’s race, and a solid field of top sprinters took the green flag on a quest to flatfoot their way around the south’s fastest half mile.

Friday’s victory by Danny Martin could have been a runaway affair had it not been for some late race cautions, but on Saturday night the caution flag was not to be found as the Top Gun Sprints battled from green to checkers with no interruptions. And with nothing but traffic to hinder his progress, Danny Martin was out to prove that he could make his success on a so called “driver’s track” translate into a second win on a wide open speedway, and as Ocala’s Rich Pratt led the field to the green flag Martin launched his rocket ship and began his mission to win the double.

Harley Zimmerman controlled the early laps of the Top Gun feature before Tony Agin was able to grab the lead, but mechanical woes would park Agin later as Martin picked his way forward into the top three. That put Zimmernan back in the lead just in time for Martin to take it away again, and from there no one had anything that could touch the 24 machine. Danny Martin lapped the field up to the fourth spot in securing his second win in two nights, while Harley Zimmerman held on for a respectable second place finish. Tim George took advantage of a night where points leader Ryan Partin was struggling to snatch away the Top Gun Sprints Series points lead with a third place finish, while Shawn Murray was fourth. And Rocky Sullivan recovered from a rollover on Friday to round out the top five at VSP on Saturday night.

The Florida Mini Sprints brought 27 cars through the forest to Barberville on Saturday, and Friday’s winner, Gavin Thomas, looked to be ready to repeat the feat on Saturday. But after problems on Friday resulted in a 25th place failure to launch at Ocala, Chris Pacetti had something to prove to Thomas and the rest of the FMSA, while Thomas would be battling an engine distraction as well as the competition.

Brett O’Donnell led from the pole as he defended his FMSA points lead, but on lap 10 Pacetti slipped by as the field clicked off 15 consecutive laps without a caution. A two car tangle in turn 2 slowed things down and regrouped the field on lap 16, allowing the racers to catch their breath and giving the leaders a clear track to race to the checkers. That caution also put Gavin Thomas on Brett O’Donnell’s rear bumper, but a slight miss in the 7 car held him back just enough that the pass could not be made. Chris Pacetti scored the win as Brett O’Donnell claimed second and Gavin Thomas placed third. 2009 FMSA Champion, Tim O’Donnell, climbed to a fourth place finish, while Steve Wheeler was fifth.

The Budweiser Modifieds were happy to have the opportunity to race for the $1200 that nature took way from them last month, and Jeff Mathews was pleased to have the chance to make a statement as to who he thinks should be on top of the 2010 Budweiser Modified points heap at Volusia Speedway Park. But if Mathews was going to prove anything, he first had to figure out how to hold off a hard charging Kyle Bronson, who found that his fastest line around the circuit was high on one end and low on the other.

Mathews had the early lead while points Jamie Carter attacked him from second place, but Bronson began three wheeling the high side of turns 3 and 4 to gain momentum, propelling him past Carter and Mathews by lap 9. Jeff Mathews never flinched, then stuck to his line and made it beat Bronson down low to retake the lead and hold on for the win. Kyle Bronson took the second spot as Jamie Carter followed in third place, with Wayne Hammond and James Smith rounding out the top five.

Chad Scranton has been dominating the Amsoil Synthetic Lubricants Thunder Stocks lately, and most observers thought that with a little controversy as a motivator last week that Scranton would be unbeatable this Saturday night. Sure enough, Scranton jumped out in front and began putting real estate between himself and the others, but the 13 car was not going to let anyone start signing a check to Scranton just yet.

Philip Brown had climbed into David Whitt’s ride and took it, “For Sale” sign and all, past Scranton and to the front of the pack, while Scott Mooers looked on in disbelief from third place. As Scranton loves to tell anyone who will listen, the Cheater Racing team does not come to lose, and he kept the heat on Brown the entire race, sometimes swapping positions or racing side-by-side until a caution for debris on lap 9 forced a momentary truce.

The battle for the lead was intense, but the racing was clean as both racers wanted to achieve a victory in the correct way instead of beating each other up. Scranton and Brown continued their tussle as Luke Sadler battled with Matt Schell for third place and Scott Mooers held onto second. Philip Brown would have to dodge a lapped car coming to the finish, but he managed to force Chad Scanton to settle for second place and get the win. Scott Mooers continues to be one of the top Thunder Stock racers nationally in the UMPDIRTcar rankings as he claimed the third spot, and Luke Sadler overcame Matt Schell for fourth as Schell wound up fifth.

Volusia Speedway Park will give the Daytona Sportswear Street Stocks a moment in the spotlight next week as the Street Stock Sensation has the racers going for a $1000 check. The Daytona Dodge Chrysler Jeep Late Models will be back in action, plus fans will see more racing from the Budweiser Modifieds and the 4 Cylinder Challenger Division, and the kids will get a chance to go racing as Box Car Racing highlights the intermission activities. For more information, please visit www.VolusiaSpeedwyPark.net.
