NINE DIVISIONS HIGHLIGHT BIG NIGHT OF RACING AT AUBURNDALE SPEEDWAY

by Dave Westerman

Auburndale Speedway returns to action Saturday night with nine classes in action. The Auburndale Trucks return to the track and will be joined by the Sportsman, Legend Cars, Street Stocks, Mini Stocks, V-8 Bombers, Scramblers, Bandoleros and the Kids Club.

Young Tim Sozio has taken over the point lead in the Auburndale Trucks following his win on July 10th. Sozio, who hails from DeBary in Volusia County, holds a very slim three point edge on Tommy King heading into this weeks event. Jim Cowhey, Jr. is just six points behind King and Roger Blevins is only four markers behind Cowhey meaning any of the four drivers could come out of the evening atop the standings.

Dave Dunkin has a half-dozen wins so far this year in the Sportsman class but is just 28 points ahead of steady Mark Medeiros. These two will ultimately decide the 2010 Sportsman championship.

The Legend Car title for 2010 is also a two-man battle with Gerald White, Jr. coming off his eighth win of the year leading Jake Perkins by 18 points heading into action this week. Defending champion Justin Brown is in third place, but 114 points in back of Perkins.

Matt McCrary has increased his Street Stock point lead to 36 over Jeff Waterman after finishing in second place last week to Kyle Peters. Dave Colpritt is in third place and has moved to within 20 points of Waterman.

The Mini Stock class continues to be a two man show. Fred Harrison, Jr.’s win last week means that both he and point leader Chris Spring have eight wins each on the year. Spring, however, maintains the point lead by 24 over Harrison. Rookie Jason Swilley has taken over third in the points but is well behind the two frontrunners.

Point leader Josh Borem finally returned to racing in the V-8 Bombers last week and although he exploded a brake rotor in the feature race, maintained a 50 point edge over Buddy Phillips, Jr. Preston Davis has the hot hand in the class right now and has moved into third in the standings but has an uphill battle trying to catch the two drivers ahead of him.

Brian Tyre expanded his point lead over Kimberly Gullett to 16 in the Scrambler class by taking his second win of the year last week. Richard Brown has moved into third place in Scrambler points, 54 behind Gullett and ten ahead of fourth place Chad Cutting.

In the Bandoleros, Teddy Lively has won six races in a row and is 42 points ahead of Andy Metz in the Outlaw division standings. Cameron White has already wrapped up the Bandit class title.

Pit gates open Saturday afternoon at 2PM, grandstands open at 5PM and racing gets under way at 7PM. Adult admission is just $12, seniors are $10, kids 5-12 are $5 and children 4 and under are free. Family packs (two adults – two kids 5 to 12) are $25. For more information, log on to www.auburndaleracing.com powered by Palm Tree Computers.

NOTES: The Legend Cars may have had the night off from Auburndale Speedway last week but they were still in action, running a Florida Tour race at Citrus County Speedway. Devin McLeod of Zephyrhills picked up his first Legend Car win of the year in that event. Video from one of Devin’s recent races at Auburndale Speedway can be viewed by going to the Legends Cars of Florida website at www.legendscarsofflorida.com. On the website you can also find out information concerning racing either a Legend Car or Bandolero at Auburndale Spreedway.

Ryan Shattuck, who lives in Islamorada in the Florida Keys, won two Bandolero features at Auburndale Speedway earlier this year before he and his family took their show on the road to run the entire Summer Shootout at Charlotte Motor Speedway in North Carolina, is the 2010 Summer Shootout Bandolero Outlaw champion. Shattuck was very consistent over the ten weeks of competition at Charlotte and won the feature race on two occasions. Shattuck will move up to the Legend Cars next year and may make a few starts this year too. Expect him to make a few shows at Auburndale as well.

Ashton Hunt started in the Kids Club, moved up to Mini Stock last year, and is now part of the Modified Mini Stock division. Her debut went reasonably well last week and look for her to be challenging for some wins in the near future. Her old Mini Stock, now re-numbered 99, has been placed in the hands of younger sister Dakota Hunt who won the Kids Club feature last time out.

Yet another pair of bicycles will be given away to a couple of lucky youngsters this week through the courtesy of “Lindsey’s Little Racers.” The bikes will be the 19th and 20th given away this year. Their record for bikes given away in a single year is 24 and they look to be sure to break that mark before the season ends thanks to the generosity of the fans, drivers and sponsors. All kids aged ten and under will get an extra ticket as they enter the track. The boys tickets will be one color and the girls tickets a separate color as there will be one boys bike and one girls bike awarded. Two prize packs will also be given away sponsored by NASCAR legend Bobby Allison.

At the beginning of the year, the Modified Mini Stock class was treading some pretty thin ground after very low car counts late last year but track owner Rex Guy decided to give the division another chance and things seem to be coming around. The class was shy one car of splitting themselves into two heats last week and has been putting on very good races as well. the aformentioned Ashton Hunt, Danny Dobbins and Mike Bruno all made their season debut last week along with a name that we had not seen in awhile, Corbin Gibbs, who was out in a very sharp-looking Dodge. over two dozen Mod Mini drivers have competed at Auburndale so far this year. Now if we can just get all of them to show up on the same night….

Ocala Takes A Break, Updates the 2010 Schedule

by BJ Cavin- Ocala Speedway Media

OCALA, FL-  As is usually the case during August in central Florida, the rainy season has reached its peak and can make racing on clay a very iffy proposition.  And that is a major reason why Ocala Speedway’s owners choose this time of the year stop fighting nature, take some time off, and get some work done.  That means Florida’s oldest speedway will be empty of fans and race cars for the next three Fridays, but will reopen on September 3rd to finish out the 2010 racing season.

And September 3rd will be a special night for the Colortyme Open Wheel Modifieds, as they will be competing in a $1000 to win event.  In addition to the $1000 payday, Ocala Speedway has placed a $500 bounty on Jeff Mathews, which will pay that $500 bonus to the racer who beats Mathews to the checkered flags.  The Amsoil V8 Thunder Stocks, the Mini Stocks, and the Gladiators, will all be competing for double points on the night, making their races extra exciting as well.

911 Heroes Night will be back this season on September 10th, with all active military, law enforcement, and emergency first responders, admitted free of charge with proper ID.  It will be a night of remembrance, but also a chance to thank all of those who protect our rights and freedoms as Americans, plus the kids will be able to compete in bicycle racing on Ocala’s front stretch at intermission.  The Late Models will headline the night’s action, plus there will be exciting racing from the Tee Pee Tire Hobby Stocks, Amsoil V8 Thunder Stocks, and the Gladiators.

And September 17th will mark the return of the always popular Church Night and Faster Pastor Racing at Ocala Speedway, as clergy from all over our area climb into race cars and battle each other to help raise funds and awareness for their ministries and churches.  Church Night is always an alcohol free night at the track, and church members are encouraged to come out and cheer on their clergy.  And while the Preacher Feature might be a big draw, fans will also see action from the Colortyme Modifieds, the Tee Pee Tire Hobby Stocks, the Amsoil V8 Thunder Stocks, the Mini Stocks, and the Gladiators.

During the three week summer break, Ocala Speedway owner Mike Peters will be working to finalize plans for upcoming events, as well as do some needed maintenance on the facilities.  While some upcoming events are already set, others are still in the negotiating and planning stage, and will be added to the 2010 schedule as soon as details are worked out.  One such event is the first appearance of Car Wars on dirt at Ocala Speedway, tentatively scheduled for September 24th.  Formerly known as Crash-A-Rama, Car Wars will feature wacky races, demo derbies, and even the first figure 8 race on dirt at Ocala.

Until September 3rd marks the reopening of the southeast’s toughest 3/8ths mile, fans can keep look for schedule updates by going to www.OcalaSpeedway.com and clicking on the 2010 schedule tab.  Fans are also reminded that they can register to receive updates via RainedOut.com, a spam free service that sends a email and/or text to your cell phone in case Ocala Speedway cancels racing due to weather.  Simply click on the link provided at the bottom of the front page at www.OcalaSpeedway.com, and follow the instructions.

Volusia Goes Back To School This Saturday

by VSP MediaBARBERVILLE, FL-  Volusia Speedway Park goes “Back to School” this Saturday night as area kids get ready to return to their classrooms after their summer break, but before that happens they will get one last blast of summer fun with kids’ bike races on the frontstretch of the south’s fastest half mile.  And while the kids will fulfill their need for speed at intermission, race fans will see exciting action from the Budweiser Modifieds as they tangle in a $1000 to win challenge race.  Other action will be provided by the Daytona Dodge Chrysler Jeep Late Models, the Taylor Racing Products Sportsman Division, the Amsoil Thunder Stocks, and the 4 Cylinder Challengers.

Fans can do something positive for their community and save some money in the process this Saturday, as Volusia Speedway Park will give a $2 discount on grandstand admission to any fans who donate school supplies.  VSP employees will collect the donated items and will pass them along to be distributed to underprivileged kids at Manatee Elementary School in Orange City.  Fans can donate anything from back packs to pens, pencils, paper, notebooks, folders, and more.  Volusia Speedway’s racers are also encouraged to donate and participate in the effort.

Jamie Carter has got a solid lock on the points lead as the Budweiser Modifieds return to action on Saturday night, but with a $1000 to win cash carrot dangling in front of the competitors, Carter could be in for some tough competition in this race.  Missing a Budweiser Modified feature earlier this summer has left Jeff Mathews trailing Carter by 135 points, but Mathews is capable of beating anyone on any night, especially when there is extra cash involved.  Kent Corbin and Larry Burkins have both posted some solid performances lately, and could be ready to ascend to a win as well.

After leading the points chase for the first half of this racing season, David Clegg has been in catch up mode ever since an accident earlier this year forced him into a backup machine.  Joe Kump will be on top of the points heap when the Daytona Dodge Chrysler Late Models hit the track this Saturday night, but David Clegg is still just 59 points out and has his backup car performing like a champ.  Meanwhile Donnie Chappell has been clawing his way up the ladder toward the points leaders and is posting some very impressive finishes.  Chappell is only 7 points shy of knocking Clegg down to third place in the points standings, and is just 66 points out of first place.  Should Kump or Clegg have a bad night, Chappell will be poised to take full advantage of their misfortune.

The Taylor Racing Products Sportsman Division is still dominated by Aaron Barsness, who holds the points lead and is tough to beat in each feature race.  But after losing the points lead to Barsness earlier in the summer, Shaun Daugharty is on a mission to recover what he lost, and take no prisoners in the process.  Unfortunately for Daugharty, that mission had a setback the last time out, but persistence will be the key to Daugharty’s success in chasing down Barsness before the season ends.  The $1000 to win race that was rained out last weekend will be made up on September 18th, so racers and fans should be sure to mark that date on their calendars.

While Scott Mooers may be dominating the points standings, he is not dominating the Amsoil Thunder Stocks when they hit the clay each Saturday night.  The guy winning the races has been Chad Scranton, whose rivalry with Mooers has kept the fans attention for a couple of months now.  But Scranton is certainly not unbeatable as Philip Brown demonstrated while behind the wheel of David Whitt’s machine, and Luke Sadler has put together some solid outings as of late and may be ready to second the motion put forth by Brown.  Mooers may be too far out of reach for Sadler to catch him, but Scranton has the same problem with Sadler.  The huge gaps in the points standings give drivers like Sadler and Scranton a “nothing to lose” situation, and that feeds their desire to keep Mooers behind them in each week’s races.

Volusia’s 4 Cylinder Challenger points battle is led by Casey Feaster, who has had a fast car all season, but has also had problems that have held him back and made his trek to the top that much harder.  Feaster holds an 111 point advantage over Tony Laporta, who has done the math and knows what he has to do in order to take the points championship trophy away from Feaster.  But after a rainout last weekend, Laporta now has one less race in which to make his math add up, and Feaster has found new determination and focus in recent weeks.  Meanwhile others like James Sullivan and Larry Langston have come on strong at this point in the season, and are a threat to beat both Feaster and Laporta to the checkers.

The grandstand gate will open at 5:30 this Saturday night, and fans are reminded to bring their school supply donations for a $2 discount.  And as weather and other factors come into play, fans should refer to www.VolusiaSpeedwayPark.net for up to date schedule information, plus news and announcements about make up dates and times for events postponed by rain.

JAMES WRIGHT III GETS FIRST OWM WIN OF THE YEAR AT AUBURNDALE SPEEDWAY

by Dave Westerman

Dodging rain storms all evening long, Auburndale Speedway put on yet another great show for the fans who braved the forecast as James Wright III picked up his first win of the year in the Open Wheel Modifieds picking up some extra cash from race sponsor Florida’s Barn.

A very disappointing field of just nine Open Wheel Modifieds made the trip to the speedway with many no-shows blaming the weather conditions for not being there. The only rain to hit the area though was just before the pit gates opened at 2PM and it lasted just shy of an hour. The only other precipitation that fell was a light drizzle just before race time as all the other heavier showers missed the track and eventually the fans were treated to an awesome sunset. (more…)

(MARNE, Mich. – August 7, 2010) – Joey Coulter won the Berlin ARCA 200 at Berlin Raceway Saturday night, beating Patrick Sheltra by 0.768 second in the 200-lap race on the 0.4375-mile oval. The win is Coulter’s first in ARCA Racing Series presented by RE/MAX and Menards competition.

Coulter won the Berlin ARCA 200 at Berlin Raceway Saturday night, beating Patrick Sheltra by 0.768 second in the 200-lap race on the 0.4375-mile oval. The win is Coulter’s first in ARCA Racing Series presented by RE/MAX and Menards competition.

Coulter became the 11th different winner in the 2010 season, and the 10th first-time winner this year.

Coulter’s No. 16 Darrell Gwynn Foundation/RipIt Energy Fuel Chevrolet started the night in the fourth position, but didn’t stay there long. Menards Pole Award winner Brian Campbell was swallowed up by the top three drivers on the outside line – Dakoda Armstrong, who started second; Coulter; and Frank Kimmel, the sixth starter. Coulter remained in second place for the first 11 laps until eventually being passed by Kimmel on the backstretch on Lap 12.

With Kimmel on a clear charge to the front, where he would take the lead on Lap 17, Coulter only seemed to slip backward, allowing both Campbell and Tom Hessert to pass him on Lap 15. With the caution flag yet to fly and Kimmel coasting well in front of the field, Coulter slipped to eighth by Lap 35 and 10th by Lap 50.

The race’s first caution came at Lap 54, when Levi Youster’s No. 23 Ford spun exiting Turn 1.

sheltrakimmelberlin10.jpgSheltra, who had started 16th and moved to fourth by Lap 50, began to make his move on the ensuing green flag. Kimmel came out of the restart first, followed by Campbell, Hessert, and then the driver of the No. 60 Boatwerks Restaurant/Speed Media Dodge. Hessert encountered trouble, however, and fell to seventh place; the initial fall allowed Sheltra to move to third.

Campbell, a Wyoming, Mich. resident racing in front of his hometown crowd, was within two car lengths of Kimmel, who had formerly held leads much larger. Campbell even threatened to pass on Lap 70, but his attempt was thwarted by the nine-time series champion.

The lapped cars of Robb Brent and Nick Igdalsky threatened Sheltra’s charge to the front, but he cleared both by Lap 78 to have only Kimmel and Campbell between him and the lead. More substantial lapped traffic stood in the leaders’ way on Lap 88 and again on Laps 96 and 97, allowing Sheltra to move ever closer to second place with Campbell struggling.

Kimmel led at Lap 100 to take the Messina Halfway Leader Award, but his advantage would not hold for long. Sheltra moved around Campbell for second place on Lap 103, and found his way to Kimmel’s inside on Lap 107 before passing for the lead one lap later. coulterpitroadberlin10.jpg

Meanwhile, Coulter was rebounding. After pitting during the first caution period over 50 laps earlier, Coulter had moved up to fourth place just past the race’s halfway point.

Campbell had passed Kimmel for second and continued to threaten Sheltra for the lead, gaining runs in the backstretch and into Turns 3 and 4 in the southern end of the track. Sheltra was too strong exiting the turns, and fended Campbell away every time – until Lap 133.

With a great roar from the hometown crowd, Campbell moved to the front with just 67 laps remaining and held a lead of more than one second just four laps later. However, Coulter had moved to second and was prepared to pounce. After second-place finishes on the short track at Toledo in May, on the superspeedway at Michigan in June, and on two other occasions in his career, the Miami Springs, Fla. driver was not about to settle for next-best – especially  when considering that he was the highest-returning finisher from the series’ 2009 race at Berlin Raceway.

His growing speed, shrinking margin, and a slight bit of misfortune gave him a chance.

Incoming points leader Justin Marks and Michael Simko – Campbell’s teammate – had been battling for position on the tail end of the lead lap when Campbell approached them to put both cars a lap down.  Marks and Simko made contact just in front of Campbell entering Turn 2 on Lap 146, and Campbell had nowhere to go. His own ride into the fringe of the infield allowed Coulter to pass, and the lead was Coulter’s for all but one lap the rest of the way, when he went to pit road for a second time just several laps later and allowed Hessert to take the advantage.

Hessert then pitted, and Coulter assumed the lead again on Lap 150 during what became the race’s longest of four cautions. Behind Coulter were Mikey Kile, Sheltra, and Steve Arpin, making his return start in the ARCA Racing Series after missing the events at Mansfield Motorsports Park and Pocono Raceway for a commitment to the NASCAR Nationwide Series.

Kimmel, who had been in the top five, fell to eighth after a slow pit stop. Marks, meanwhile, was suffering transmission issues, and came in to his pit for lengthy repairs. He would finish 21st.

The race went green again on Lap 159, with Coulter immediately receiving pressure from the lapped car of Max Gresham. Coulter turned the Mansfield winner away and started to drive from the pack as Arpin and Sheltra waged an intense battle, beating and banging for the third position behind Kile. Both would pass Kile by Lap 165, rendering Kile to fourth.

Campbell yielded the race’s third caution when he, still on the lead lap but far from the front of the field, bumped Kimmel, who then collected Chad McCumbee, on Lap 168. Not even the following restart would allow the field to catch Coulter, who had to get away yet another time after Tim George Jr. brought out the race’s final caution by contacting the wall on Lap 175.

The race became a two-car battle in the waning laps, with Arpin falling off the pace and Sheltra appearing as Coulter’s lone rival. The margin rose above and fell below one second numerous times in the final laps, but Sheltra could come no closer than a half-second, giving Coulter his elusive first win.

Sheltra was second, followed by Arpin and Hessert. Kimmel rebounded in the final 10 laps to finish fifth.

Armstrong finished sixth, Kile seventh, and Simko eighth. Craig Goess became the new series points leader with a ninth-place finish, and McCumbee filled out the top ten.

Campbell, who entered with much promise as a hometown favorite, finished 23rd.

Goess leads the ARCA Racing Series standings by 25 points over Kimmel, and Marks is third, 45 points from the lead. Sheltra advanced back to fourth, trading spots with Hessert. Armstrong, Kile, and George maintained their positions in the top eight, and Coulter used his win to bump Robb Brent from ninth place.

The race finished in one hour, 17 minutes, and 37 seconds, at an average speed of 77.297 mph, a new race record.

The ARCA Racing Series presented by RE/MAX and Menards visits New Jersey Motorsports Park on Sunday, August 15. The 67-lap, 150-mile Garden State ARCA 150 presented by American Red Cross begins at 1 p.m. Eastern, with live timing and scoring and live audio coverage presented by ARCA Nation at ARCARacing.com.
