Problems Plague Points Leaders at Volusia

BARBERVILLE, FL-  Scattered showers peppered many areas around Volusia Speedway Park throughout the afternoon on Saturday, but after a rainout the previous weekend the speedway managed to escape with a few near misses, but no actual rainfall until after dark.

That opened the door for the Budweiser Modifieds to chase a $1000 cash carrot, and for fans to see action from the Daytona Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram Late Models, the Taylor Racing Products Sportsman Division, the Amsoil Synthetic Lubricants Thunder Stocks, and the 4 Cylinder Challengers.

Unfortunately for the Volusia County kids who will find themselves back in classrooms on Monday morning, their chance to fulfill a need for speed was washed out by a pop up shower that hit the track right at intermission, and which sent the track staff scrambling to get the program moving as more showers loomed off to the west on radar.  Those other showers fell apart before arriving at the track, thus allowing the feature races to run as scheduled, and as things played out many points leaders might have preferred that it continue to rain. Augie Grill had a dream ride.

On a nightmarish Friday the 13th for the top three in points, Grill could’ve had the top off of his No. 112 Super Late Model.

The two-time Snowball Derby champion looked to be in late-season form, lapping all but seven of the 17-car field to capture the Miller Lite 100 on Friday at Five Flags Speedway.

Josh Hamner, in his Kyle Busch-owned No. 51, finished a distant second with Donnie Wilson in third.

“It’s actually just like it was in the last race,” said Grill, who won his second consecutive Blizzard Series race. “We didn’t do a thing to it. We had six laps of practice and we put it back because it just felt good. We know what it feels like here.” (more…)

What’s Happening at Citrus County this Weekend

Saturday RACE EVENTS 08/14/10

The Open Wheel Mods Are Back!

ATTENTION DRIVERS (2 Subjects):

#1.  “Statement regarding rough driving and the black flag”

When I first took over as flagman over 5 weeks ago, the #1 complaint I received from the racers was they felt like they really couldn’t race hard for fear of being black flagged. I had many calls, texts, and e-mails about this subject, and many people were concerned about the black flag being pointed at them for minor or inadvertent contact. They wanted the control of the race to be back in the racer’s hands, and not the tracks.

Well as we have all seen over the past few weeks, this obviously does not work. I have preached in the drivers meetings ever week to “race the way you want to be raced”, some of you have taken that to heart, and some of you have not. Using the black flag as a flag man is purely a judgment call, every situation is different, as much as you would like them to all be the same. Using the black flag takes the control out of the drivers hands and puts in squarely on the flag man, pit steward, and spotters. It’s no different than making a judgment call on a spin or a wreck. Some people will be happy, and some people will be unhappy, that’s the problem with Judgment calls.

Some of the things that have happened on the track over the last month have no place on any race track. Some people will never grasp the concept of respecting another driver or their car. I have tried to let you guys (and gals) work it out between yourselves, and all that managed to happen were fines, suspensions, wrecked race cars, and unhappy racers still.

So because of the events of the last few weeks, your leash has just become much, much shorter drivers. Starting this week, 8/14, the experiment comes to and end. I suggest that everyone read the general rules, and pay special attention to the “Conduct” section. There are very specific rules in that section, when you fill out your registration each year, you are acknowledging that you have read and agree to these rules. Don’t let them catch you by surprise.

#2.  “Statement regarding the MANDATORY drivers meetings”

Last week at the drivers meeting, there were between 12-17 drivers that attended. We had around 70 cars in the pits, not including the late models which had a separate meeting. Drivers meetings are a mandatory part of the evening, you know that they take place around 5:15 every race night. There are things that I talk about almost every week in the meetings that no one pays attention to, so I can only assume that you are not there or do not care.

So starting on 8/21, we will be having a roll call for 1 random class at the drivers meeting each week. If you are not in attendance, or do not send a representative to attend the meeting, you will be forced to start in the rear of the feature for that night. The only acceptable excuses for not attending would be car problems, medical emergencies, etc. And even then, you need to have someone there for roll call. This way there will be no reason anyone should say ” I didn’t know”.

John Chance

We look forward to a very exciting weekend racing tomorrow, and we hope all of you will join
us this weekend. Good luck to all.

ORLANDO SPEEDWORLD’S DAYS COULD BE NUMBERED

(Article from Orlando Sentinel Sports Section  August 13, 2010 from the Front Page)

by Steven Cole Smith

BITHLO — Rex Hollinger began racing at Orlando Speed World in 1994. As his black number 85 ministock paused on the track’s front straightaway before his feature race Friday night, Hollinger — like every racer — glanced up into the grandstands.

And like every racer at Orlando Speed World these last few years, he saw that the grandstands were almost empty. Less than 200 fans were scattered around a facility that could hold 20 times that. (more…)
