OPEN WHEEL MODIFIEDS BACK IN ACTION SATURDAY NIGHT AT AUBURNDALE SPEEDWAY

by Dave Westerman

Saturday night racing action at Auburndale Speedway will see the return of the Open Wheel Modified cars along with racing in the Modified Mini Stocks, Street Stocks, V-8 Bombers and Scramblers.

James Wright III takes a healthy 110 point lead into this weeks Open Wheel Modified 40-lap headliner. Bobby Blake currently sits second in points but has a margin of just six over third place Wayne Morris. Wright, Blake, Keith Lilley and Kyle Bookmiller all have two wins to their credit this year while Morris has had one visit to victory lane. Wright’s consistency with several second and third place finishes has him well in front of his competitors though. Lilley is coming off a win in the most recent OWM event, but a couple of DNF’s have hurt him in the standings. Bookmiller has been absent from recent events, but his strong early season showing still has him seventh in points.

The Modified Mini Stock point chase will come down to which one of three drivers can put together the best performance in the few races that remain. Scotty Sharpe has regained the point lead and sits 20 markers ahead of Jason Rendell who had engine trouble the last time out. Mike Sweet is still very much in the hunt as he’s in third spot only two points behind Rendell.

Rookie driver Matt McCrary continues to be winless in his first season of Street Stock racing, but his consistent top five finishes have him up by 30 points over Jeff Waterman, the only driver left who could possibly take the 2010 title away from him. Recent tough luck has third place Dave Colpritt well behind the lead duo and fourth place James Wright III is now just 30 behind Colpritt.

Josh Borem had another rough week last week but still holds a 64 point advantage over Buddy Phillips, Jr. in V-8 Bomber points. Meanwhile, Preston Davis took his fourth win last week and remains third in points by 96 over James Wright, Jr.

Kimberly Gullett has increased her point lead in the Scrambler class to 78 over Brian Tyre who continues to have late-season problems. Richard Brown has closed to within ten points of Tyre for second place.

Pit gates open at 2PM Saturday afternoon with grandstand gates opening at 5PM. Racing starts promptly at 7PM. Adult admission is $12, seniors are $10, kids 5-12 are $5 and children age 4 and under are free. Family four-packs (2 adults – 2 kids 5-12) are $25. For more information, log on to www.auburndaleracing.com powered by Palm Tree Computers.

All kids aged 10 and under will, as usual, get an extra ticket when the enter the track from “Lindsey’s Little Racers” that makes them eligible for a pair of prize packs being donated this week by NASCAR driver Joe Nemechek and NEMCO Motorsports. Also, 40 lucky kids will win a free ice cream from the concession stand thanks to Street Stock driver Jeff Waterman and OWM/Late Model/Truck drivers Keith Lilley and Wally Warrick.

Seat cushions are now available for fans courtesy of Aaron’s and the new Auburndale Speedway T-shirts from Royal-Tees are on sale at the track. Adults wearing their t-shirt to the track get $2 off their admission!!

Auburndale Speedway’s Facebook page has been updated and now has close to 1500 “friends.” Go to Facebook and check it out!

63 DRIVERS ELIGIBLE FOR BONUS MONEY IN AUBURNDALE SPEEDWAY LATE MODEL FINALE ON OCTOBER 16TH

by Dave Westerman

Just three weeks remain before Late Model drivers will converge on Auburndale Speedway for their final race of 2010 with over $22,000 in prize money and contingency awards now up for grabs. Sixty-three different drivers have raced in the previous Late Model events at Auburndale this year and will be eligible for the full purse and all contingencies. The winner can take home $5,000 cash plus contingencies and even if the winner has not competed yet this year at Auburndale, the winner’s check will still be a cool $4,000.

Tim Russell established himself as the favorite by winning the last Late Model race two weeks ago giving him three wins on the season. Jeff Scofield, a two-time winner this year leads the points even though he missed the last race and will certainly be a favorite as well. Daniel Webster is the only other driver to win a Late Model event this year and can’t be counted out as a favorite either. A very large car count is expected with such a big purse on the line. Schmauss Wins Racecar Engineering Late Models at Eastbay

September 25, 2010

By: Russ Calabrese
9/25/2010
A great night of action here at The Clay by The Bay as 100 cars entered for tonight’s events.
The first Feature of the night was the Precision Kia Street Stocks. On the front row was Sheffield and Kruse leading them to the green flag. But it was Clarence Pratt picking up his second win of the season as he held off the hard charging of current points leader Donnie Reed who picked up second place. Finishing third was Thomas Pratt, fourth went to Billy Carlbert, Jr. Buck Woodhouse finished in the fifth position. Howard Osteen and Donnie Reed picked up the heat wins.

Next up were the Old Time Mods. Roger Herbach picked up his first win of the season and held off Zack Amundsen for several laps before spinning out with just a handful of laps left. That moved Don Land into second and Zack coming back to finish in the third position.

Points Leader Bryan Bernhardt and David Schmauss led the Racecar Engineering Late Models for 25 Laps of side by side action. Several cautions came out through out the race but Schmauss never looked back on the re-starts. David Schmauss was able to hold off last years defending Champion Jeff Mathews for the Win. Mathews finished second while current points leader Bryan Bernhardt finished third, Alex Boerner and Mavrick Varnadore rounded out the top five. Brothers Mavrick and Travis Varnadore both picked up the heat wins.

After becoming a daddy just 3 days ago, Danny Martin, Jr. led the entire race for the East Bay Sprints. Second went to Tim George, followed by Travis Bliemeister, Clint Reynolds and Dakotah Stephens. Heat winners were Tim George and Danny Martin, Jr.

Thirty Three cars registered for the Motorstats.com 4 Cylinder Bombers. Top 7 from the 3 heats advanced to the A-Main. Kever Raulerson, Jim Baker and Robert Purcell advanced from the B-Main into the A-Main. It was the 8X of Richie Acres and Troy Dittebrand battling it out with 3 laps to go and crossing the finish line first was Acres. But during Post Race inspection, Acres was disqualified failing muffler inspection. Thus, handing over the win to Troy Dittebrand. Michael Eaton, Richard Humfeld, Johnnie Alexander and Robert Kissam were your Top 5. Don T. Quinn, Thomas Burnside and Jimmy Odell picked up the heat wins.

In the Dirt Daubers, it was William Bolle in his Bill Elliott throw back to win his first Feature.

ASA sanctioned racing returns to East Bay Raceway Park on Saturday, Oct. 2nd, 2010. Action for Racecar Engineering Late Models, Limited Late Models, Gagel’s Auto Parts Open Wheel Modifieds, Precision Kia Street Stocks and Outlaw 4s will fill the bill.
Plus a $200 to win for Fan Participation. For more information, go to
www.eastbayracewaypark.com or call the track office.

PERKINS AND ABBOTT SPLIT LEGEND FEATURES – GORDON WINS SCHOOL BUS FIGURE 8 AT AUBURNDALE SPEEDWAY

by Dave Westerman

A huge crowd of fans enjoyed very pleasant weather and plenty of great racing Saturday evening at Auburndale Speedway. The Legend Cars ran their Regional Qualifier that had been rained out at another race track, then ran a second feature for the 22 cars that had signed in. Capping off the evening was a great School Bus Figure 8 race and a Demolition Derby.

Only eleven of the 22 Legend Cars that signed in were eligible for the Regional Qualifier as it was open only to drivers who qualified at Punta Gorda Speedway before rain washed out the rest of the program there.

Auburndale Speedway point leader “No Brake” Jake Perkins trailed Lynn Wiles for seven laps before making the winning pass and led the rest of the way to win the Regional and get an automatic spot in the Young Lions division race at the U.S. Legend Car Asphalt Nationals next month at Langley Speedway in Langley, VA. Wiles held on to finish second while Justin Brown was third ahead of Chase Fitzgerald and Dakota Baggette. Gerald White, Jr., Zach Napoleon, Mason Ketterman, Joey Collins and Donovan Ponder rounded out the top ten.

Drivers qualified for starting spots in the second feature race of the night which was for both Auburndale Speedway and National points. Tyler Smith topped time trials with a lap of 15.087 seconds with Perkins second quick at 15.097 and Kory Abbott third quick at 15.243 despite having no practice laps.

The race would not get off to a good start as several cars got tangled up heading into turn one after the drop of the green. Both Chase Fitzgerald and Justin Brown got into the wall. Gary Verdier was also involved but both he and Brown continued while Fitzgerald was done before the actual start of the 25 lapper.

The second try went much better as Smith set sail with the field slicing and dicing behind him. Abbott was on the charge in a hurry and the veteran driver slipped by Smith on lap five for the lead bringing Jake Perkins with him. Caution was out one lap later as Donovan Ponder and Mason Ketterman tangled up in turn two with Ketterman’s car too damaged to continue.

Abbott and Perkins pulled away from the field following the restart and things stayed uneventful until lap 14 when Matt Larmore spun in turn two and was hit by Brown. Both were able to continue and would put on quite a show coming from the back of the restart line-up. Again Abbott and Perkins ran off and hid only to see one more slow-down on lap 23 when Zach Napoleon spun in turn four. Abbott easily withstood the pressure to score his second staight Auburndale points win in his 5R Truck & Trailer sponsored car. Perkins was a close second with Smith holding on for third ahead of Lynn Wiles and Gerald White, Jr. Completing the top ten were Dakota Baggette, Gary Verdier, Donovan Ponder, Dave Gleason and Joey Collins.

Preston Davis has made it a habit of starting near the back of the V-8 Bomber feature field and passing a slew of cars to score his victories. This week though, Davis won the heat race and earned the pole starting spot for the 15 lap headliner. Davis had no trouble scoring his fourth win of the year as he led flag to flag. Larry Chumney II gave chase but could not do anything with Davis. Third spot went to James Wright, Jr. in front of Matt Johns and Jason Howell. The rest of the top ten were Buddy Phillips, Jr., Kevin Barton, William “Huggy Bear” Hindman, Josh Borem and Mark Roadarmel, Jr.

Kim Gullett ended up winning a wild Scrambler class heat race then led all the way to score her third feature win of the year and add to her point lead after second place Brian Tyre could not make the call for the feature start.  Gullett topped Gary Brown, Jerry Pruitt, Reggie Ware and Richard Brown to take the win.

After heat winner Fred Harrison, Jr. dropped out with mechanical ills, point leader Chris Spring breezed to his ninth Mini Stock feature win of the year. James Pate took second trailed by Jason Swilley, Matt McCrary and Mark Wells.

Ryan Shattuck topped a pair of Bandolero feature races. Shattuck out-ran Cameron White and Joey Padgett in the first feature which was open to drivers who were at Punta Gorda for the rained out Legend Car Regional Qualifier.

After leading the way qualifying with a lap of 15.924 seconds, Shattuck again led all the way in the nightcap finishing well in front of point leader Teddy Lively, Coty Bibeau, Michael Held and Cameron White.

John Baranauskas led all the way and held off point leader Wayne Calkins to win the Figure 8 feature race. Paul Bookmiller took third ahead of William Hindman and Wayne Whitehead.

The School Bus Figure 8 race featured quite a bit of close competition, sometimes going three-wide. Doing that eventually cost Danny Taylor as his bus tipped over on its side between turns one and two. Taylor was unhurt and he even re-fired his machine but opted to sit out the rest of the event.

The only place there wasn’t any competition in the Bus run was for the lead as Bobby Gordon simply dominated things and had a big enough lead that he could easily time his driving through the “X.” Dustin Aaron made a late pass to snare second spot ahead of Gary Swing, Andrew Tweety and Doris Thorne.

Michael Malverty outlasted his brother Eugene to win the Demolition Derby.

This Saturday night the Open Wheel Modifieds return along with Modified Mini Stocks, V-8 Bombers, Scramblers, Street Stocks and Kids Club. Racing starts at

7 PM. For more information call 863-551-1131 or log on to www.auburndaleracing.com powered by Palm Tree Computers.

What’s Happening at Punta Gorda this Saturday, October 2nd

This Saturday night at Punta Gorda Speedway the Super Late models are back with some unfinished business to take care of.  This is the make up from the Sept 11 rainout. All cars will requalify and draw a new pill.  Twenty two cars took time on Sept 11 before the rains came and a few more have already called to reserve a spot so this is going to be a good one.  Make sure you call for a slab as they will fill up fast.  Along with the Super Lates the Legends, Bandolero, Outlaw Modified, Super Stocks, Pro 4, Fab 4 and the Road Warriors will be in action. This Friday night there will be practice for all divisions starting at 4:00PM.

SATURDAY NIGHT RACES START AT 6:30

Pit Entry: $30.00 Infants only with parent Free.

Ticket Prices: Adults $10 – Seniors & Veterans $8 – Children 11-17 $5 – 10 and under are Free
